This mod allows yout to start your campaign in 970, 1080, 1200, 1300, 1400, or 1500 and can be downloaded here:

NB: this mod requires the official 1.2 patch for M2TW or it will not work. This patch can be downloaded here:

Also the launcher for this mod (total_war_eras.bat) has been set to use anglophonic (English language) pathways. If you're playing on a computer set to an non-anglophonic language you will have to change the pathways in the launcher. To do this open the total_war_eras.bat in notepad and find the lines listed below.

4) Some new events will occur, though they have no impact on the game.

Conquest vs Achievement

One of the main features of this mod is that the player can choose whether their win conditions will be based on Conquest or Achievment. A Conquest campaigns is won if the player takes a set number of settlements from anywhere on the map, while an Achievement campaign requires the player to defeat certain factions but does not require the player's faction to possess more than one settlement. To access this feature on the campaign screen you need to click where the 'Long / Short' campaign button was.

Total War Eras Installation Guide
0) DOwnload this mod (eras lite 2.2.7z) and unpack it using 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org/).

1) Go to the Medieval II Total War directory (default is C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War).

2) Copy and paste the eras.bat, eras.cfg, and 'eras' folder into the Medieval II Total War directory. These files form the basics of the game.

3) Copy and paste the 'data' folder in the 'eras lite' folder into the Medieval II Total War directory, you will be asked if you wish to overwrite the vanilla 'data' folder, click yes. This will add the shared.sd and strategy.sd in the vanilla 'data\ui' folder. These files are needed to make the factions symbols work but may prevent other mods from working. If you have a problem with other mods try deleting them (there's a spare copy of them in the 'eras\data\ui' folder).

4) To play this mod double click on the 'total_war_eras.bat' file and select the campaign you want to play (you can make this file into a desktop shortcut).

How to Play the 2.2 Version

0) Download the mod
1) Start up this mod by clicking on the 'total_war_eras.bat'.
2) Choose which campaign you want to play (this copies the relevent files).
3) Click on 'Single Player' option in the start menu.
4) Click on 'Imperial Campaign' on the next menu (this mod will now automatically bring up the correct campaign).
5) Select a faction and start this mod.

How to Play the 2.1 Version

0) Download the mod
1) Start up this mod by clicking on the 'total_war_eras.bat'.
2) Click on 'Single Player' option in the start menu.
3) Click on 'Custom Campaign' on the next menu.
4) Choose which campaign you want to play.
5) Select a faction and start this mod.

Additional Files

If the sound does not work copy the whole vanilla 'data/sound' folder to the 'eras/data' folder.

Also I'd like to thank dave scarface for making a descr_events.txt file that works with the Big Map mod and SicilianVespers for all his work on the .bat launch menu.

Known issues

I am aware of the following problems and I am working on a way to fix them.

1) If you click on several factions, rather than just choosing one and starting the game, the mod will crash (to counter this choose the faction you want to play first, then start the game).

2) Since each campaign requires different files loading a save file from one campaign when this mod is set to another campaign's settings may cause the mod to crash. For example if the mod is set to the 970 settings and you try to load a save file from the 1500 campaign the mod may crash.

I downloaded Eras Total War 2.2 and tried to run it, but no matter which Era I chose (1,2,3,4,5), I ended up with 1400.

This sounds like a problem with the laucher (total_war_eras.bat). There are two main causes.

1) You're using the 2.1 total_war_eras.bat file, which was not designed to change campaigns in the same way the 2.2 version does. Try replacing the 'total_war_eras.bat' with the one that came with the 2.2 file abnd see if this helps.

2) The files are not being copied. If you recieve a lot of error messages that you have to cancel this means that the necessary files are not being copied. Try rebooting your computer to see if this fixes the problem.

The problem with the error messages is the .bat itself, since it's an english-computers-only bat. How anglocentric!!!:furious3:

There are the 6 or 7 lines in it which define the path, saying it's "c:\program files\etc..." That's fine with english pc's but in my (german) case it must be "c:\programme\etc..." to function at all.
No big deal and it's easily fixed. Maybe you could put a little remark in the readme for the non-english players?

I just started an early 970 campaign as england. I seem weak, there is a landbridge to mighty France and there is no pope. We'll see...:sweatdrop:

I was unaware that the launcher did not work on non-anglophonic computers, thanks for pointing out this problem. I've made a note of it in the first post but can you check that the example is correct.

i got the exact same problem that the both of them have with the 1400 only and all that i tried restarting my computer several times and i played around with this file a bit and nothing worked. this is what my total_war_eras.bat file looks like if you could please review this and see if something here is causeing the problem thanks.

I'm unsure what is causing your problem. Can you give me the following information.

1) When you double click on the 'total_war_eras.bat'. Does the mod load immediately or do you get a pop-up menu?

2) If you get a pop-up menu which choice do you select (1,2,3,4,5,6, or 0)?

3) When you've selected your choice are several files copied before the mod starts or does the mod start without copying any files?

That's odd, if it's copying the files then it should be changing campaigns. Are you using Window XP? Also is the Eras mod installed in the following folder 'C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War'?

First i want to say that i really love the work u are doing wiht this mod, and i really hope to see u keep going wiht the great job.

And now the problems im having with the mod.

I have an spanish version of the game, and at the the begining i could only load the 1400 part, something that i solved modificating the .bat as u said, that worked well, but once on the game, when i select a general or a priest for example the game crushes, the screen goes black, and takes me back to the desktop once i press esc. This happens wiht any era i choose, even if i try the 1400 era or i leave the .bat as it was.

Digging on what causes that i was able to isolate the problem on descr_sm_factions.txt i can make the mod work fine by not loading that file and using the original one from the rar (not letting the .bat load descr_sm_factions_late.txt on the 1500 campaing) the problem looks to came from the order the factions are, for example i took the original descr_sm_factions.txt, the first faction is England, if i place Spain first as descr_sm_factions_late.txt the game crushes if i choose Spain and i select any general but not wiht England.

With this little fix i can play fine, but im not sure how it may affect to the mod not to load the rigth descr_sm_factions.txt for every campaing and using allways the original.

Another weird bug i found playing Spain on 1500 (not sure if on the other campaings too) is that the game acts as if Spain is an islamic country, when i select a general for example the voices are the same as if i choose an Islamic country, i even get the calls for the yihads, on the other hand also acts as catholic being able to vote for a new Pope and etc.

The problems you mention are related. The descr_sm_factions.txt file lists all the factions in the mod (including their culture, religion, and logo) but also determines which sound files are used for which faction. For example in the vanilla version of M2TW if you swap Engand and France around in the descr_sm_factions file they'll change voices.

When I tried to integrate the Xenophonia mod into this mod I somehow created a sound file that worked without having to copy the whole sound folder to the mod (I was not expecting this to happen), however all the voices were wrong. To compensate for this I changed the order of the factions in the descr_sm_factions file so that most had the correct voice (since there were more Arabic voices than I needed it was difficult). This is why the factions are in a different order.

This mod is designed to switch between descr_sm_factions based on the campaign, so you'll need to edit all of them. If you're going to edit the descr_sm_factions all you need to ensure is that all the factions are present with the correct religion, logo, culture (these change for some factions in different campaigns). For the factions I've added it's best to add them to the bottom of the descr_sm_factions file (after the 'slave' faction).

Though the factions speak with the wrong voices this should not affect the mod in any other way.

Sorry for being unclear. Basically after downloading and unpacking this mod you'll have a folder called 'eras lite'. Inside this folder are the 'data' and 'eras' folders, along with the 'eras.cfg', 'total_war_eras.bat', and 'Eras instructions.txt'. Except for the 'Eras instructions.txt' all these files need to be pasted into the 'Medieval II Total War' folder (default location 'C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War'). Since there is already a data folder in the 'Medieval II Total War' folder (the vanilla data folder) you'll be asked if you want to overwrite it (click yes).

After doing this the mod will be installed.

Also there isn't a lot of rebel land because most of the land belonged to a specific country, even though the ruler of the country may not have had full control over it. Therefore large amounts of rebel land would be unrealistic.

And a personal comment, I don't think Egypt should be that big along with Kievan Rus or the Cuman Khanate. Kiev almost looks the size of a European map of Russia by the year 1700, excluding the Cumans.

I know Kiev "spread" and had "influence" in certain areas, such as fur trading posts and forts, but do you think core areas should be the only territory any faction should hold? Again: I am too much of a wuss to declare war on my neighbours - I feel bad when I win.

Going on your sence, you might as well give the Novgorod region to Sweden all the way down the Dnieper and give northern Scotland and the Dublin region of Ireland to Norway.

The starting position are based on the maps I was able to find, since I was unable to find one for 970, so I had to use the ones from a later time period.

Regarding faction sizes my basic logic was that if you attacked a settlement would you be declaring war just on the settlement or a country?

For example if you attacked Angers would this be considered an attack on Angers or an attack on France? If it's an attack on Angers then Angers does not belong to France and should be a rebel province, but if the French armies would attack whoever's attacking Angers to defend Angers then Angers would be considered part of France.

With factions such as Kievan Rus, Egypt, and the Cumans I was unsure exactly which areas would be considered independent and which areas would be considered part of these countries so they're the size they are now.

This is because I'd prefer not to install anything over my vanilla installation, since I now have MII installed, patched, Kingdoms installed, patched as well.

I don't plan to use mod switch, mod command, or moddir because I don't know how to turn my mod into these (other than putting the 'eras' folder in the mod folder).

The only files this mod installs to the vanilla are the 'shared.sd' and 'strategy.sd', both of which have not affected my version of Kingdoms; so you don't need to worry about the vanilla files.

M2TW just requires that these files are in the vanilla data folder but it does not matter what information these files contain. Consqeuently I can freely switch between my Seasons and Eras mods without any problems.

I played on 1400 and 1500 campaign, and always crash on strat map. My favourite is 1500.. but i cant play. Today i played on 1200 and 1300, and i crashed now by downloading of battle in both campaign.

I play now with your another cool mod:seasons. I played with Santa : north region is just lowland, there is nothing special. But in region: veneficus emp. and aminositans- there are too much woods and mountains- these regions lag in my computer. I went to mountains(=animositans) and crashed 2 times - like in eras mod.
Maybe ground of problems? Eras mod had lag too in my comp. sometimes. But i have good computer, i play in high graphics, the medieval2 never laggs.
I hope u understood what i wrote :)

I agree that in my Seasons mod there is some lag in the Veneficus Empire and Animositans lands. However I don't know how to reduce this (other than reducing the graphics setting you're playing at).

There are two possible reasons for the lag:
1) The Big Map mod which makes the map much larger than the default M2TW map.
2) The 'MapMod: Trees, Textures, Sea' changes the appearence of the land.
