POLISH-LITHUANIAN COMMONWEALTH:
UNITS PREVIEW

I created The Units Preview of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 18th century to mod European Wars (Rome Total War). This is a completely new version of the Polish units of the fraction compared to the beta version. Units are divided into two groups: the early 18th century (A) and the other half of that century (B). Their number is much higher than usual in mod EW, as many as 34 units. The player will have a wide variety of infantry and cavalry. In the early era units are characteristic of the 17th century, such as the winged hussars, pikemen, haiduks. In the age of the other, there will newer types of units such as grenadiers, hussars and the National Cavalry.
All units have been reskinned again and their number was doubled. I tried to take care of the details of uniforms and armor so they are visible differences between early (like Louis XIV of France - uniforms longer, larger), and the late era (uniforms inspired by the tight-fitting Prussian uniforms). Soldiers have a variety of distinctive headgear and clothing details. Even the hairstyles are tailored to the periods and characteristics of units.
Thank you for Lordz teams and Fire and Sword for lending some elements of textures and models for the 18th-century weaponry and uniforms.

FLAG:
In the times of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (1569–1795), a banner of the Commonwealth was used, combining the heraldic symbols of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The Commonwealth banner was initially plain white emblazoned with the arms of the Commonwealth which consisted of the heraldic charges of Poland (White Eagle) and Lithuania (Pursuer). Since both Polish and Lithuanian coats of arms consisted of white (Argent) charges in a red (Gules) field, these two colors started to be used for the entire banner. During the 17th century, the banner was usually divided into two, three or four horizontal, often swallow-tailed, stripes of red and white.

HISTORY:
John III Sobieski, fighting protracted wars with the Ottoman Empire, revived the Commonwealth's military might once more, in process helping decisively in 1683 to deliver Vienna from a Turkish onslaught. From there, it all went downhill. The Commonwealth, subjected to almost constant warfare until 1720, suffered enormous population losses as well as massive damage to its economy and social structure. The government became ineffective because of large scale internal conflicts, corrupted legislative processes and manipulation by foreign interests. The nobility class fell under control of a handful of powerful families with established territorial domains, the urban population and infrastructure fell into ruin, together with most peasant farms. The reigns of two kings of the Saxon Wettin dynasty, Augustus II and Augustus III, brought the Commonwealth further disintegration. The Great Northern War, a period seen by the contemporaries as a passing eclipse, may have been the fatal blow destined to bring down the Noble Republic. The Kingdom of Prussia became a strong regional power and took Silesia from the Habsburg Monarchy. The Commonwealth-Saxony personal union however gave rise to the emergence of the reform movement in the Commonwealth, and the beginnings of the Polish Enlightenment culture.
During the later part of the 18th century, the Commonwealth attempted fundamental internal reforms. The reform activity provoked hostile reaction and eventually military response on the part of the neighboring powers. The second half of the century brought improved economy and significant growth of the population. The most populous capital city of Warsaw replaced Danzig (Gdańsk) as the leading trade center, and the role of the more prosperous urban strata was increasing. The last decades of the independent Commonwealth existence were characterized by intense reform movements and far-reaching progress in the areas of education, intellectual life, art, and especially toward the end of the period, evolution of the social and political system. The royal election of 1764 resulted in the elevation of Stanisław August Poniatowski, a refined and worldly aristocrat connected to a major magnate faction, but hand-picked and imposed by Empress Catherine II of Russia, who expected Poniatowski to be her obedient follower. The King accordingly spent his reign torn between his desire to implement reforms necessary to save the state, and his perceived necessity of remaining in subordinate relationship with his Russian sponsors. The Bar Confederation of 1768 was a szlachta rebellion directed against Russia and the Polish king, fought to preserve Poland's independence and in support of szlachta's traditional causes. It was brought under control and followed in 1772 by the First Partition of the Commonwealth, a permanent encroachment on the outer Commonwealth provinces by the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Prussia and Habsburg Austria. The "Partition Sejm" under duress "ratified" the partition fait accompli, but in 1773 also established the Commission of National Education, a pioneering in Europe government education authority.

POLISH ARMY:

Information on specific types of soldiers

Grenadiers:
Grenadiers were distinguished by their head-gear from the ordinary musketeers who made up the bulk of each regiment of foot. While there were some exceptions, the most typical grenadier headdress was either the mitre cap or the bearskin. Both began to appear in various armies during the second half of the 17th century because grenadiers were impeded by the wide brimmed infantry hats of the period when throwing grenades.
The mitre cap, whether in stiffened cloth or metal, had became the distinguishing feature of the grenadier in the armies of Poland, Britain, Russia, Prussia and most German states during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Spanish, Austrian and French grenadiers favoured high fur hats with long coloured cloth hoods ("bags") to them. The mitre was gradually replaced by bearskin hats in other armies.
While Northern-European armies such as Poland, Britain, Russia, Sweden and various German states (perhaps most famously Prussia) wore the mitre cap, southern countries such as France, Spain, Austria, Portugal and various Italian states preferred the bearskin.

Reiters:
Reiters (German: Reiter, or horserider, shortened from the original “Schwarze Reiter”—literally, "black riders") were a type of cavalry, which appeared in the armies of Western Europe in the 16th century in place of the outmoded lance-armed knights, at the same time that cuirassiers and dragoons began to attain typological distinction from other kinds of cavalry. The reiters raised firearms to the status of primary weapons, as opposed to earlier Western European heavy cavalry which primarily relied upon melée weapons. The reiter’s main weapons were two or more pistols and a sword; sometimes they also carried a long cavalry firearm known as an arquebus or a carbine.

Winged Hussars:
The Polish Hussars (Husaria) were the main type of cavalry of the first Polish Army, later also introduced into the Army of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, between the 16th and 18th centuries. When this cavalry type was first introduced by the Serbian mercenary horsemen around the year 1500, they served as light cavalry banners; by the second half of the 16th century hussars had been transformed into heavy cavalry. Until the reforms of 1770s the husaria banners or companies were considered the elite of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth cavalry. They were widely regarded as one of the most powerful cavalery formations in the world. Polish Hussars were undefeated in battle for over 100 years.
The hussars were famous for their huge 'wings', a wooden frame carrying usually eagle, but sometimes ostrich, swan or goose feathers. The symbolism is connected with the Serbian origin. In the 16th century characteristic painted wings or winged claws began to appear on cavalry shields. Wings were originally attached to the saddle and later to the back. In 1645, Col. They wore the wings because they made a loud, clattering noise which made it seem like the cavalry was much larger than in reality. Unfortunately, the wings were very heavy and when the soldiers went into battle it proved to be strenuous.
The hussars towarzysz were required to provide the arms and armour for themselves and their retainers, except for the lance which was provided by the King. Each lance's horses also came at each towarzysz husarski expense. Winged hussars during their heyday, 1574–1705, carried the following arms and armour:
The kopia lance was the main offensive weapon of the hussar. The lances were based on the Balkan (Serbian) and finally Hungarian lances except the Polish lances could have been longer and, like their predecessors from the Balkans and Western Europe, they were hollowed, with two halves glued together and painted, and even often richly gilded. They were commonly made from fir-wood, with the lance point being made from forged steel. They had a gałka large wooden ball which served as the handle guard. The hussar's lance usually ranged from 4.5 to 6.20 meters in length. There was another type of lance was used, known as demi-lance or kopijka, that could have been 3-3,5 meter long and used against the Tatars and Turks of the later 17th century wars.
The Towarzysz husarski carried underneath his left thigh a Eastern-in-origin koncerz estoc (up to 1,5 meter in length) and often under his right thigh a palasz (a type of broadsword). The szabla sabre was carried on the left side, and several types of sabres were known to winged hussars, including the famous szabla husarska.
At the height of their prowess, 1576-1653 hussar armor consisted of a szyszak Oriental Turkic-in-origin helmet later developed into Polish variety with hemispherical skull, comb like Western morion 'cheekpieces' with a heart-shaped cut in the middle, neck guard of several plates secured by sliding rivets, and adjustable nasal terminating in a leaf-shaped visior. Shishak and kettle hat helmets for lower rank (retainers) were often blackened as well was their armor. A cuirass (breast plate), back plate, gorget, shoulder guards and of the Great Steppe, Western vambraces with iron glove and later during the 1630s the Persian origin karwasz vambrace that was a forearm protection. Towarzysz also could wear tasset hip, cuisse thigh and poleyn knee protection, underneath a thigh length coat of mail or specially padded coat with mail sleeves. Retainers usually wore less expensive and older armor, often painted black, and after 1670s might have no cuirass, according to some sources. Karacena Sarmatian armor (of iron scales riveted to a leather support), might have consisted of scale helmet, cuirass, gorget, legs and shoulder protection, became popular during the reign of king Jan Sobieski, but perhaps due to costs and weight remained popular mostly with the winged hussar commanding officers. Their armor was light, usually around 15 kg, allowing them to be relatively quick and for their horses to gallop at full speed for long periods. Albeit during the 1670s onwards chain-mail was used when fighting the Tatars in the southern part of the republic. Towarzysz usually wore a leopard (sometimes tiger, jaguar, lion) pelt over his left shoulder, or as often depicted in the surviving Podhorce Castle paintings he had the exotic pelt underneath his saddle or wrapped around his hips. Whereas wolf, brown bear and lynx pelts were reserved for leaders and veterans (starszyzna).

Pancerni:
Towarzysz pancerny ("armoured companion"; plural: towarzysze pancerni, or pancerni ) was a medium-cavalryman in 16th-18th century Poland, named for his chainmail armor ("pancerz"). These units were the second-most-important cavalry arm in the Polish Army, after the Hussars.
Most pancerni were recruited from the middle or lower classes of szlachta (nobility). They were organized into companies (singular: chorągiew pancerna) of 60-200 horsemen.
In the medieval times, during Mieszko I and Bolesław I Chrobry rules, pancerni were members of prince own force, as they only in whole army wore mail armours.

Dragons:
The word dragoon originally meant mounted infantry, who were trained in horse riding as well as infantry fighting skills. However, usage altered over time and during the 18th century, dragoons evolved into conventional light cavalry units and personnel. Dragoon regiments were established in most European armies during the late 17th century and early 18th century. The name is possibly derived from a type of firearm (called a dragon) carried by dragoons of the French Army. There is no distinction between the words dragon and dragoon in French. The title has been retained in modern times by a number of armoured or ceremonial mounted regiments.
Regiments of Polish dragoons:
* Regiment Gwardii Konnej Koronnej
* Regiment Konny im. Królowej
* Regiment Konny im. Królewicza
* Regiment Konny Buławy Wielkiej Koronnej
* Regiment Konny Buławy Polnej Koronnej
Regiments of Lithuanian dragoons:
* Regiment Gwardii Konnej Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego
* Regiment Dragonów Królewicza Imci Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego
* Regiment Konny Buławy Wielkiej Litewskiej
* Regiment Konny Buławy Polnej Litewskiej

National Cavalry
The National Cavalry (Kawaleria Narodowa) was a branch of Polish-Lithuanian cavalry in the Polish armed forces in the last quarter of the 18th century. Formed as a merger of previously-existing units of Polish Hussars and pancerni that were still in service after the Confederation of Bar. In 1777 the Sejm new regulations converted all units of heavy cavalry and medium cavalry and reformed them into a line cavalry, roughly similar to later uhlans popular in Europe in 19th century. Existing dragoon and Front or Vanguard Regiments were outside this reform The National Cavalry had a very short history of 20 years, and some units stationed in the eastern Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth were forcibly incorporated into the Russian cavalry following the Second Partition of Poland, and the remainder was disbanded together with the rest of Polish-Lithuanian armed forces after the final partition in 1795. The Sejm's 1777 decision was rather late effort to modernize Polish-Lithuanian cavalry, along the much earlier trend of evolution of European cavalry towards more modern organization of the cavalry regiments into more mobile formations. The most modern part of the reform was the establishment of some very modern battle dress uniforms for these cavalrymen, and in turn this uniform of the National Cavalry inspired numerous similar uniforms and employment of 'Polish lance' in the rest of Europe, notably the Austrian, Prussian, Russian cavalry, and later of the French cavalry of the Napoleonic Wars.

Looks good, 'cept for a couple things...
Beards? 'Ol Petey wasnt too fond of beards. He's a bit famous for his habit of pulling them out by the roots.

Also, the Lifeguard Cavalry was established only a little while before Peter died. 1721 is, i believe the date the first cavalry were brought into the Imperial Guard. Prior to that the only Guard regiment was the Preobrazhensk Guard, who I dont believe displayed the Imperial Eagle in that particlar style. Nor do I believe that cavalry of Peter the Great's period were often equipped with firearms.

Still, theyre very pretty :D

I can't see the first one (cavalry) either if I put the link in browser on its own I get a timed out message from the imageshack site. Is it a much bigger (file size) picture than the others? If so maybe it would work better as a thumbnail, or just try uploading to them again....

The two I can see look great though!

small beards wore in late XVII century and early XVIII century

Not under Peter the Great. He viewed pretty much any beard as 'backwards', sort of a symbol of 'Old Russia', which he wasnt very fond of. He made a lot of nobles shave their beards, so I doubt he'd allow them in the army.

don't give up on the campaign map just because the Rome engine doesn't exactly work gunpowder warfare. This could be really good.

If you want historical accuracy heres a little note-
the bayonet was invented in the 1750's. or somewhere around there

Heres a little historical note also;

The bayonet as a military weapon started to be used in the 1640ies thus a century eaerlier then your historical note.

The invention is even older and goes back another century, it is argued it was first used for hunting. A huntingdagger that was applied into the barrel of the arquebus or whatever gunpowder those hunters used.

Pre-Peter the Great Russia didnt have grenadiers, life guards, or anything like that. They had Streltsy. Post Peter the Great, beards were out of fashion because people who had them were still peresecuted, only now the state didnt have to do it on their own.

I've noticed that the Russian Fusiliers are carrying swords. If I'm not mistaken, the Average Russian Infantryman of the period carried a bayonette. In fact, only Swedish infantry practiced fighting with swords. The rest of Europe were fighting souly with bayonettes for their infantry.:book:

Some comments; There should only be one line of buttons/buttonholes. The coattails should be fixed together like later continental armies-showing the yellow inside. Hair on ordininary soldiers were never unbound, but always in ponytails with the "tail" part in a black hair pouch. The camisole undercoat should be parted in the front. The ammunition bag should be black with broad brown leather straps.
Swordbelt = brown leather. Swordhilts; ordinary soldiers black, non commissioned officers silvered, officers gilded. Pikeneers: no ammo bags. Grenadiers; extra grenade bag on left hip - black. No yellow facings on the chest, thats from the 1765 model uniform. The whole front of the mithra caps should be covered with a brass plate.

Thats what i could think of out of hand.

Thanks for a good initiative.

More comments;
The cavalrymen should have a broad yellow strap across their torso for carrying their carbines, hanging from their right hips when mounted. A small yellow ammunition pouch with a two finger wide yellow strap over the left hip, just above the swordhilt. All officers, infantry, cavalry, artillery et c. had yellow swordbelts.

Artillery uniforms; Prior to 1711 grey with blue collars, cuffs and facings. After1711 all blue.

Finnish infantry wore more commonly grey uniforms with blue collars, cuffs and facings. Locally recruited Ingrian, Estonian and Livonian infantry blue with red collars, cuffs and facings. Thats propably the case for Pommeranian, Wismar and Bremen-Werden troops also.

The Great Northern War was not a usual catfight jus between Sweden and Russia. The enemies of Sweden was from 1700 Russia, Denmark-Norway and Saxony-Poland. From 1715 also Brandenburg-Prussia and the United Kingdoms.
The Allies of Sweden was the Duchy of Schlesvig-Holstein, Polish insurgents, the Ukrainians under Mazepa, and occasionally Turkey. Later in the war also Hessia. If the war had continued, Spain would have joined. Advanced plans to have the pirates of Madagascar given full pardons and letters of marquee, or even incorporation in the Swedish navy. They would have operated from Gothenburg. Some even came to the Baltic and pirated for a short while.

Regarding bayonets contra swords.
All infantry carried swords, and did so until after the Napoleonic wars. The bayonet was never intended for CQB between infantrymen. It was intended for protection against cavalry, making every musket into a mini-pike. A sword is far more efficient in fighting opposing infantry. Compare with WW2 infantry, who would rather fight with spades than bayonets. The reason for abolishing infantry swords in 19 century was economics. Since real CQB was relatively rare, it was considered an unnecessary cost to equip infantry with swords and soldiers had to make do with their bayonets on those rare occasions when the defenders didn't ran of.

Swedish infantry always drew swords before charging. I suppose the other armies did to - they werent stupid.

the first bayonets were pluged into the barrel witched would stop the gun from shooting (make fix bayonet a specal abilty) and remained that way for a while not sure when the stared using bayonets fitted to side of gun but i think it was before nepolionic war:egypt:

you should have cannons with grape shot(like shotgun its a shell made of paper with musket balls in it the paper would burn away when it was fired and musked balls would go every wair devastating at close range:book: )

you should also have grainades made of clay pots with musket balls and nails and stones and gun powder (just modifie the look of naffamen and chainge look of explosion:idea2: )

The Swedish army adopted side-mounted(?) bayonets in the 1690´s, and we weren´t first. So it was at least 100 years before the Napoleonic wars.

I´m starting to feel bad about my comments on your fantastic work. It´s not my intention to diss you... but here it goes;

The Swedish pikeneers and grenadiers never fought as independent unit as depicted. They were integrated into the infantry battallions. The pikeneers made up the center third of the battallions, and the grenadiers made up the extreme end of the wings - 24 men to each. On very rare occasions the 48 grenadiers of each battallion were compiled as temporary shock-troops against especially tough field fortifications.

Also, the standard depth of the 600 man strong battallion was four ranks. But this of course varies during the game, i suppose.

Maybee its not possible to organize mixed battallions in the mod? if so, its more historically correct not to have grenadieers and pikeneers at all.

The Drabant Corps was a combined bodyguard / officers school / officers pool of a two-company squadron. The minimum rank of its members were lieutanents and it should be a one-only unit. I was almost always commanded by the king himself. Standard cavalry formation was the plow-formation, with the riders riding knee behind knee, to make the formation more compact and tougher than the opposing cavalries linear formations,

The culotte trosers depicted are blue instead of yellow, because historically, the companies depicted ran out of yellow cloth, and had make do with blue.

A member of the Polish landed gentry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_landed_gentry), (Polish):szlachta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Szlachta), he was a military commander for the Bar Confederation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bar_Confederation) and fought against Russian domination of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish-Lithuanian_Commonwealth). When this uprising failed, he emigrated to North America, where he became a General (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General) in the Continental Army (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continental_Army) during the American Revolutionary War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Revolution). Kazimierz Michał Wacław Wiktor Pułaski herbu Ślepowron, as was his full name, was born March 4 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_4), 1746 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1746) (some sources cite March 6 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_6)) in Winiary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winiary), near Warka (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warka). His father, Józef Pułaski (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%B3zef_Pu%C5%82aski), was the Starost (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starost) of the area and one of its most notable inhabitants of the time. Early in his youth, Kazimierz Pułaski was sent to Warsaw (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warsaw), where he studied at the local college of Theatines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theatines).
In 1762 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1762), he started his career as a page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Page_%28servant%29) of Charles Christian Wettin (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Charles_Christian_Wettin&action=edit), Duke of Courland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Courland) and a vassal of the Polish king. However, soon after his arrival at Mitau (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jelgava), the ducal court was expelled from the palaces by the Russian forces occupying the area. Pułaski returned to Warsaw (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warsaw), where in 1764 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1764) he took part in the election of the new Polish monarch, Stanisław II August (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanis%C5%82aw_August_of_Poland).
A skilled military commander and a son of one of the notable families, Pułaski became one of the co-founders of the Bar Confederation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bar_Confederation), together with his father, on February 29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/February_29), 1768 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1768). The confederation, aimed to curtail Russian hegemony (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hegemony) over the Commonwealth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish-Lithuanian_Commonwealth), was actively opposed by the Russian forces stationed in Poland. As the Marshal of Nobility of the Land of Łomża (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%81om%C5%BCa), Pułaski became one of the best commanders of the confederate forces. That year he was besieged in a monastery in Berdyczów (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berdycz%C3%B3w), which he defended for two weeks against overwhelming odds. Taken captive by the Russians, he was set free after being forced to pledge that he would not return to the confederates.
However, he did not consider such a forced pledge binding and fought against the Russian forces for four more years. In 1769 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1769), he was again besieged by numerically superior forces, this time in the old fortress of Okopy Świętej Trójcy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okopy_%C5%9Awi%C4%99tej_Tr%C3%B3jcy). However, after a brave defense, he was able to break through the Russian siege and defect with his men to the Ottoman Empire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottoman_Empire), from where they returned to Lithuania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Duchy_of_Lithuania). There Pułaski incited yet another revolt against Russia, with many local nobles joining the Confederation.
Between September 10 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_10), 1770 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1770), and January 9 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_9), 1771 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1771), Pułaski also commanded the Polish forces in the siege of Jasna Góra (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jasna_G%C3%B3ra) monastery, which he successfully defended. In November 1771, he was also the main organizer of an attempt to take the king hostage. However, the attempt failed, and the Confederation was disbanded soon afterwards. Pułaski was made a public enemy and sentenced to death in absentia for attempted regicide (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regicide). He fled the country, but no European state accepted him. After a brief stay in Turkey, he moved illegally to France, where he was recruited by Gilbert du Motier, marquis de La Fayette (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilbert_du_Motier%2C_marquis_de_La_Fayette) for service in America.
From 1777 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1777) until his death, Pułaski fought in the American Revolutionary War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Revolution) for the independence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independence) of the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States). He was a noted cavalryman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavalry) and, as the "Father of the American Cavalry," created Pulaski's Legion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulaski%27s_Legion), one of the few cavalry regiments in the American Continental Army (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continental_Army). He took part in the Battle of Brandywine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Brandywine), the Siege of Charleston (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Charleston) (South Carolina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Carolina)), and the Battle of Savannah (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Savannah) (Georgia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgia_%28U.S._state%29)).
On October 9 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_9), 1779 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1779), Pułaski — during a cavalry charge, while probing for a weak point in the British lines at the Battle of Savannah — was wounded in the groin by grapeshot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grapeshot). He was carried from the field by several comrades, including Colonel John C. Cooper (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=John_C._Cooper&action=edit), and taken aboard the privateer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privateer) merchant brigantine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brigantine) Wasp. Two days later, without having regained consciousness, he died of his wounds.
According to several contemporary witnesses, including Pułaski's aide-de-camp (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aide-de-camp), he was buried at sea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burial_at_sea). A long-standing rumor, however, has it that the wounded Pułaski was actually taken to Greenwich (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenwich) plantation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plantation) near Savannah (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savannah%2C_Georgia), where he died and was buried. In 2004, an eight-year examination of remains buried at the plantation ended inconclusively.

One of the first tributes to Pułaski was paid when George Washington (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Washington) on November 17 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/November_17), 1779 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1779), issued a challenge-and-password (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Password) set for identifying friend and foe when crossing military lines: "Query: Pulaski, Response: Poland".
The United States has long commemorated Pułaski's contributions to the American War of Independence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_War_of_Independence), but Polish immigration (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immigration) in the 20th century (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20th_century) accelerated the interest. By presidential proclamation, every October 11 is "General Pulaski Memorial Day (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Pulaski_Memorial_Day)," dedicated to Pułaski's memory and to the heritage of Polish-Americans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish-Americans). Each October Grand Rapids, Michigan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Rapids%2C_Michigan), celebrates "Pulaski Days (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pulaski_Days&action=edit)". There is also a statue of Pułaski in Detroit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit), Michigan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michigan), in the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Michigan Avenue.
The State of Kentucky (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kentucky) has by law, since before 1942, recognized General Pulaski's Day (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Pulaski%27s_Day). The State of Illinois (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illinois) has since 1977 celebrated Casimir Pulaski Day (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casimir_Pulaski_Day) on the first Monday of March, doubtless due to the large Polish population of Chicago (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago). (Pulaski Road (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulaski_Road_%28Chicago%29), one of Chicago's major arteries, is named for him.) Wisconsin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisconsin) and Indiana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana) extend similar recognition, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milwaukee%2C_Wisconsin), also holds an annual parade and school holiday. On his day there is a Pulaski Day parade on Fifth Avenue in New York City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City).
"Pulaski Park" sits on Main Street between City Hall and the historic Academy of Music Theater, in the town of Northampton, Massachusetts. Northampton and the surrounding area is home to many Polish American immigrants and their descendants.

The American Civil War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Civil_War) Fort Pulaski National Monument (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Pulaski_National_Monument) is named in honor of Kazimierz Pułaski.
A US Navy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_Navy) submarine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Submarine), USS Casimir Pulaski (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Casimir_Pulaski_%28SSBN-633%29), has been named for him, as was a 19th-century (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/19th_century) Coast Guard cutter .

Several cities and counties in US states (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_state) are named after Pulaski, including the city of Pulaski, Tennessee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulaski%2C_Tennessee), counties in Arkansas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulaski_County%2C_Arkansas) (of which Arkansas' state capital (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Rock%2C_Arkansas) is the county seat), Georgia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulaski_County%2C_Georgia), Illinois (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulaski_County%2C_Illinois), Indiana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulaski_County%2C_Indiana), Kentucky (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulaski_County%2C_Kentucky), Missouri (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulaski_County%2C_Missouri), and Virginia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulaski_County%2C_Virginia), as well as villages in Wisconsin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulaski%2C_Wisconsin) and New York (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulaski%2C_New_York). A bridge on Interstate 65 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_65) over the Kankakee River (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kankakee_River) in Indiana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana) is named after him. The Pulaski Skyway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulaski_Skyway) in northern New Jersey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey) and the Pulaski Bridge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulaski_Bridge) in New York City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City) are dedicated to him. A section of U.S. Highway 40 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Highway_40) from New Castle, Delaware (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Castle%2C_Delaware) to Baltimore, Maryland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baltimore%2C_Maryland) is named the Pulaski Highway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulaski_Highway). There are also Casimir Pulaski elementary schools (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elementary_schools) in New Bedford, Massachusetts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Bedford%2C_Massachusetts), and Meriden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meriden%2C_Connecticut), Connecticut (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connecticut), and an industrial park is named for him in nearby Wallingford, Connecticut (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wallingford%2C_Connecticut). Within the Savannah College of Art and Design (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savannah_College_of_Art_and_Design) in Savannah, Georgia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savannah%2C_Georgia), Pulaski House is the name for a student residential building. Additionally, there is Pulaski Square in downtown Savannah and Fort Pulaski National Monument outside Savannah. There is also a Pulaski Street and park in the historically Polish city of Hamtramck (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamtramck), Michigan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michigan). Streets named for Pulaski also exist in Chicago, Illinois (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago%2C_Illinois), in downtown Columbia, South Carolina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia%2C_South_Carolina), and Northampton, Massachusetts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northampton%2C_Massachusetts). A section of the 5/8/12 arterial in Utica, New York (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utica%2C_New_York), is named the Casimir Pulaski Highway.
In the movie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Movie) Year of the Dragon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_of_the_Dragon_%28movie%29), a drug (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drug_abuse)-smuggling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smuggling) ship crucial to the finale is called the Kazimierz Pułaski.
American singer-songwriter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singer-songwriter) Sufjan Stevens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sufjan_Stevens) titled a song "Casimir Pulaski Day" on his album, Illinois (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illinois_%28album%29), in which the singer's adolescent love succumbs to cancer on Casimir Pulaski Day (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casimir_Pulaski_Day). Similarly, but using a different spelling, heavy rock band Big Black (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Black) include a song, Kasimir S. Pulaski Day, on their album Songs About ****ing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songs_About_****ing).
There is a technical university in Poland known as Casimir Pulaski Technical University of Radom.
On March 19 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_19), 2007 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007), the United States Senate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Senate) agreed unanimously (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unanimity) to posthumously recognize Casimir Pulaski as an Honorary Citizen of the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honorary_Citizen_of_the_United_States). If the United States House of Representatives (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_House_of_Representatives) follows suit, and the President of the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_the_United_States) signs the resultant bill into law, Pulaski will become only the seventh person so honored.

Peter the Great or Pyotr Alexeyevich Romanov (Russian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_language): Пётр I Алексеевич Pyotr I Alekse`yevich, Пётр Великий Pyotr Veli`kiy) (9 June (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_9) 1672 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1672) – 8 February (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/February_8) 1725 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1725) [30 May (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_30) 1672 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1672)–28 January (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_28) 1725 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1725) O.S. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Style_and_New_Style_dates)]) ruled Russia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russia) from 7 May (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_7) (27 April (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_27) O.S.) 1682 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1682) until his death, jointly ruling before 1696 with his weak and sickly half-brother, Ivan V (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_V_of_Russia). Peter carried out a policy of "Westernization (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westernization)" and expansion that transformed the Tsardom of Russia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsardom_of_Russia) into the Russian Empire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Empire), a major European (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe) power.

Peter, the son of Alexei Mikhailovich (Alexis I of Russia) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexis_I_of_Russia) and his second wife, Nataliya Kyrillovna Naryshkina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nataliya_Kyrillovna_Naryshkina), was born in Moscow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moscow). Alexei had previously married Maria Miloslavskaya (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Miloslavskaya), having five sons and eight daughters by her, although only two of the sons—Feodor III (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feodor_III_of_Russia) and Ivan V (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_V)—were alive when Peter was born. Alexei I died in 1676 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1676), and was succeeded by his oldest surviving son, Feodor.

Feodor III's uneventful reign ended within six years; as Feodor did not leave any children, a dispute over the succession between the Naryshkin and Miloslavskyi families broke out. Ivan was the next for the throne, but he was chronically ill and of infirm mind. Consequently, the Boyar Duma (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boyar) (a council of Russian nobles) chose the ten-year old Peter to become Tsar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsar), his mother becoming regent. But one of Alexei's daughters by his first marriage, Sophia Alekseyevna (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sophia_Alekseyevna), led a rebellion of the Streltsy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streltsy) (Russia's élite military corps). In the subsequent conflict, many of Peter's relatives and friends were murdered—Peter even witnessed the butchery of one of his uncles by a mob. The memory of this violence may have caused trauma during Peter's earlier years.

The Streltsy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streltsy) uprising of April-May 1682 made it possible for Sophia, the Miloslavskys (the clan of Ivan), and their allies, to insist that Peter and Ivan be proclaimed joint Tsars, with Ivan being acclaimed as the senior of the two. Sophia acted as regent during the minority of the two sovereigns and exercised all power. Peculiarly, a large hole was cut in the back of the dual-seated throne used by Ivan and Peter. Sophia would sit behind the throne and listen as Peter conversed with nobles, also feeding him information and giving him responses to questions and problems. This throne can be seen in the Kremlin museum in Moscow. For seven years, she ruled as an autocrat.
Throughout the ages it has been the habit of many historians to portray Sophia as an ambitious, Machiavellian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machiavellian) woman who would do whatever it took to achieve power. By early middle age, Peter himself came to associate Sophia with the dark forces of opposition, forgetting as do many historians that in the seven years of her regency that Peter and his mother, while pushed out of the scene, were never threatened or harmed. Indeed, the often overlooked fact that Peter lived, busy and content, through the regency speaks volumes.
Peter, meanwhile, was not particularly concerned that others ruled in his own name. He engaged in such pastimes as shipbuilding and sailing, as well as mock battles with his toy army (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toy_army_of_Peter_I). Peter's mother sought to force him to adopt a more conventional approach and arranged his marriage to Eudoxia Lopukhina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eudoxia_Lopukhina) in 1689 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1689). The marriage was an utter failure, and ten years later Peter forced her to become a nun and thus freed himself from the marriage.

By the summer of 1689, Peter had planned to take power from his half-sister Sophia, whose position had been weakened by the two unsuccessful Crimean (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimea) campaigns. When she learned of his designs, Sophia began to conspire with the leaders of the streltsy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streltsy), who were somewhat like hooligans continually arousing disorder and dissent of the tsar's rule. Unfortunately for Sophia, Peter, warned by the Streltsy, escaped in the middle of the night to the impenetrable monastery of Troitsky (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troitse-Sergiyeva_Lavra); there he slowly gathered his adherents and others, who perceived he would win the power struggle. She was therefore overthrown, with Peter I and Ivan V continuing to act as co-tsars. Peter forced Sophia to enter a convent, where she gave up her name and position as a member of the royal family.
Still, Peter could not acquire actual control over Russian affairs. Power was instead exercised by his mother, Nataliya Naryshkina. It was only when Nataliya died in 1694 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1694) that Peter became truly independent. Formally, Ivan V remained a co-ruler with Peter, although he was still ineffective. Peter became the sole ruler when Ivan died in 1696 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1696).

Peter grew to be a giant of a man. Standing at nearly two metres (six feet seven inches) he was literally head and shoulders above his contemporaries both in Russia and throughout Europe. However Peter lacked the overall proportional heft and bulk generally found in a man that size. Both Peter's hands and feet were small, and his shoulders narrow for his height; likewise, his head was also small for his tall body. Added to this were Peter's noticeable facial tics, and, judging by descriptions handed down, he almost certainly suffered from petit mal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absence_seizure), a light form of epilepsy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epilepsy).

Filippo Baltari, a young Italian visitor to Peter's court, wrote:

"Tsar Peter was tall and thin, rather than stout. His hair was thick, short, and dark brown; he had large eyes, black with long lashes, a well-shaped mouth, but the lower lip was slightly disfigured...For his great height, his feet seemed very narrow. His head was sometimes tugged to the right by convulsions."
Centuries later, the artist Valentin Serov (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valentin_Serov) gave a less flattering description of Peter:

"He was frightful: long, on weak, spindly little legs and with a head so small in relation to the rest of his body...he looked more like a sort of dummy with a badly stuck on head than a live person. He suffered from a constant tic and was always making faces: wrinkling, screwing up his mouth, twitching his nose, wagging his chin."
Otherwise, judging by documents—or lack thereof—that have managed to survive to the present day, few contemporaries, either in or outside of Russia, commented on Peter's great height or appearance.

Peter implemented sweeping reforms aimed at modernizing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modernization) Russia. Heavily influenced by his western advisors, Peter reorganized the Russian army along European lines and dreamt of making Russia a maritime power. He faced much opposition to these policies at home, but brutally suppressed any and all rebellions against his authority, the rebelling of streltsy, Bashkirs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bashkirs), Astrakhan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astrakhan) and including the greatest civil uprising of his reign, the Bulavin Rebellion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulavin_Rebellion). Further, Peter implemented social westernization in an absolute manner by implementing policies such as a "beard tax."
To improve his nation's position on the seas, Peter sought to gain more maritime outlets. His only outlet at the time was the White Sea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Sea) at Arkhangelsk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkhangelsk). The Baltic Sea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baltic_Sea) was at the time controlled by Sweden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweden) in the north, while the Black Sea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sea) was controlled by the Ottoman Empire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottoman_Empire) in the south. Peter attempted to acquire control of the Black Sea, but to do so he would have to expel the Tatars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tatars) from the surrounding areas. He was forced, as part of an agreement with Poland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poland), which ceded Kiev (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiev) to Russia, to wage war against the Crimean (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimea) Khan and against the Khan's overlord, the Ottoman Sultan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottoman_Empire). Peter's primary objective became the capture of the Ottoman fortress of Azov (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azov), near the Don River (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_River%2C_Russia). In the summer of 1695 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1695) Peter organized the Azov campaigns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azov_campaigns) in order to take the fortress, but his attempts ended in failure. Peter returned to Moscow in November of that year, and promptly began building a large navy. He launched about thirty ships against the Ottomans in 1696 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1696), capturing Azov (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azov) in July of that year. On September 12 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_12), 1698 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1698), Peter The Great officially founded the first Russian Navy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Navy) base, Taganrog (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taganrog).

Peter knew that Russia could not face the Ottoman Empire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottoman_Empire) alone. In 1697 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1697), he traveled to Europe incognito with a large Russian delegation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delegation)–the so-called "Grand Embassy" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Embassy_of_Peter_I)—to seek the aid of the European monarchs. Peter's hopes were dashed; France (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/France) was a traditional ally of the Ottoman Sultan, and Austria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austria) was eager to maintain peace in the east whilst conducting its own wars in the west. Peter, furthermore, had chosen the most inopportune moment; the Europeans at the time were more concerned about who would succeed the childless Spanish King Charles II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_II_of_Spain) than about fighting the Ottoman Sultan.
The "Great Embassy", although failing to complete the mission of creating an anti-Ottoman alliance, still continued to travel across Europe. In visiting Holland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holland), Peter learned much about Western culture. He studied shipbuilding in Zaandam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zaandam) and Amsterdam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amsterdam). Thanks to the mediation of Nicolaas Witsen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolaas_Witsen), mayor of Amsterdam and expert on Russia par excellence, the czar was given the opportunity to gain practical experience in the largest shipyard in the world, belonging to the Dutch East India Company (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_East_India_Company), for a period of four months. The Tsar helped with the construction of an East Indiaman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Indiaman) especially laid down for him: Peter and Paul. During his stay the tsar engaged many skilled workers such as builders of locks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lock_%28water_transport%29), fortresses, shipwrights and seamen. Cornelis Cruys (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornelis_Cruys), a vice-admiral who became under Franz Lefort (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franz_Lefort) the Tsar's advisor in maritime affairs. Besides Peter paid a visit to Frederik Ruysch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederik_Ruysch), who taught him how to draw teeth and catch butterflies. Also Ludolf Bakhuysen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludolf_Bakhuysen), a painter of seascapes and Jan van der Heyden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_van_der_Heyden) the inventor of the fire hose, received Peter, who was keen on learning and bringing home what he had seen.

In England he met with King William III (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_III_of_England), visited Greenwich (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenwich), Oxford (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxford), was painted by sir Godfrey Kneller (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godfrey_Kneller) and saw a Fleet Review, Royal Navy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fleet_Review%2C_Royal_Navy) in Deptford (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deptford%2C_London). Then the Embassy went to Leipzig (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leipzig), Dresden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dresden) and Vienna (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vienna). He spoke with August the Strong (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_the_Strong) and Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leopold_I%2C_Holy_Roman_Emperor). The Embassy did not make it to Venice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venice). The visit of Peter was cut short in 1698 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1698), when he was forced to rush home by a rebellion of the streltsy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streltsy_Uprising). The rebellion was, however, easily crushed before Peter returned home from England (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England); of the Tsar's troops, only one was killed. Peter nevertheless acted ruthlessly towards the mutineers. Over 1200 of them were tortured and executed, with Peter acting as one of the executioners. The streltsy were disbanded, and the individual they sought to put on the Throne—Peter's half-sister Sophia—was forced to become a nun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nun).
Also, upon his return from his European tour (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Tour), Peter sought to end his unhappy marriage. He divorced the Tsaritsa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsaritsa), Eudoxia Lopukhina. The Tsaritsa had borne Peter three children, although only one—the Tsarevich (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsarevich) Alexei (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexius_Petrovich)—had survived past his childhood.
In 1698, Peter sent a delegation to Malta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malta) under boyar Boris Petrovich Sheremetyev (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheremetyev), to observe the training and abilities of the Knights of Malta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knights_of_Malta) and their fleet. Sheremetyev also investigated the possibility of future joint ventures with the Knights, including action against the Turks and the possibility of a future Russian naval base.

Peter's visits to the West impressed upon him the notion that European customs were in several respects superior to Russian traditions. He commanded all of his courtiers and officials to cut off their long beards—causing his Boyars, who were very fond of their beards, great upset—and wear European clothing. Boyars who sought to retain their beards were required to pay an annual beard tax of one hundred rubles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_ruble). He also sought to end arranged marriages, which were the norm among the Russian nobility, because he thought of such a practice was not only barbaric but also led to domestic violence since the partners usually resented each other in this forced union.
In 1699 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1699), Peter also changed the celebration of new year from 1st September to 1 January (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_1). Traditionally, the years were reckoned from the purported creation of the World (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creation_%28theology%29), but after Peter's reforms, they were to be counted from the birth of Christ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anno_Domini).

Peter made a temporary peace with the Ottoman Empire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottoman_Empire) that allowed him to keep the captured fort of Azov, and turned his attention to Russian maritime supremacy. He sought to acquire control of the Baltic Sea, which had been taken by Sweden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweden) a half-century earlier. Peter declared war on Sweden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweden), which was at the time led by King Charles XII (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_XII_of_Sweden). Sweden was also opposed by Denmark (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denmark), Norway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norway), Saxony (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saxony), and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish-Lithuanian_Commonwealth).

Russia turned out to be ill-prepared to fight the Swedes, and their first attempt at seizing the Baltic coast ended in disaster at the Battle of Narva (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Narva) in 1700 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1700). In the conflict, the forces of Charles XII used a blinding snowstorm to their advantage. After the battle, Charles XII (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_XII_of_Sweden) decided to concentrate his forces against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish-Lithuanian_Commonwealth), giving Peter I time to reorganize the Russian army.
As the Poles and Lithuanians on one side and Swedes on the other, fought each other, Peter founded the great city of Saint Petersburg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Petersburg) (Germanically (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg) named after Saint Peter the Apostle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Peter)) in Izhora (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingria) (which he had re-captured from Sweden) in 1703 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1703). He forbade the building of stone edifices outside Saint Petersburg — which he intended to become Russia's capital — so that all the stonemasons could participate in the construction of the new city. He also took Martha Skavronskaya (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martha_Skavronskaya) as a mistress. Martha converted to the Russian Orthodox Church (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Orthodox_Church) and took the name Catherine, allegedly marrying Peter in secret in 1707 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1707).

Following several defeats, the Polish King August II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_II_of_Poland) abdicated in 1706 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1706). Charles XII turned his attention to Russia, invading it in 1708 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1708). After crossing into Russia, Charles defeated Peter at Golovchin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Holowczyn) in July. In the Battle of Lesnaya (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Lesnaya), however, Charles suffered his first loss after Peter crushed a group of Swedish reinforcements marching from Riga (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riga). Deprived of this aid, Charles was forced to abandon his proposed march on Moscow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moscow).

Charles XII refused to retreat to Poland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poland) or back to Sweden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweden), instead invading Ukraine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukraine). Peter withdrew his army southward, destroying any property that could assist the Swedes along the way. Deprived of local supplies, the Swedish army was forced to halt its advance in the winter of 1708 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1708)–1709 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1709). In the summer of 1709 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1709), they nevertheless resumed their efforts to capture Ukraine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukraine), culminating in the Battle of Poltava (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Poltava) on 27 June (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_27). The battle was a decisive defeat for Swedish forces, ending Charles' campaign in Ukraine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukraine) and forcing him into exile in the Ottoman Empire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottoman_Empire). In Poland, August II was restored as King.
Peter foolishly attacked the Ottomans in 1711 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1711). Normally, the Boyar Duma would have exercised power during his absence. Peter, however, mistrusted the Boyars; he abolished the Duma and created a Senate of ten members. Peter's campaign in the Ottoman Empire was disastrous; in the ensuing peace treaty, Peter was forced to return the Black Sea ports he had seized in 1697. In return, the Sultan expelled Charles XII.

Peter's northern armies took the Swedish province of Livonia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_Livonia) (the northern half of modern Latvia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latvia), and the southern half of modern Estonia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estonia)), driving the Swedes back into Finland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_Finland). Most of Finland was occupied by the Russians in 1714 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1714). In 1716 and 1717, the Tsar revisited the Netherlands, and went to see Herman Boerhaave (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herman_Boerhaave). He continued his travel to the Austrian Netherlands (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austrian_Netherlands) and France. The Tsar's navy was so powerful that the Russians could penetrate Sweden. Peter also obtained the assistance of Hanover (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanover_%28state%29) and the Kingdom of Prussia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_Prussia). Still, Charles XII (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_XII) refused to yield, and not until his death in battle in 1718 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1718) did peace become feasible. Sweden made peace with all powers but Russia by 1720. In 1721, the Treaty of Nystad (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Nystad) ended what became known as the Great Northern War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Northern_War). Russia acquired Ingria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingria), Estonia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Estonia), Livonia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Livonia) and a substantial portion of Karelia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karelia). In turn, Russia paid two million Riksdaler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riksdaler) and surrendered most of Finland. The Tsar was, however, permitted to retain some Finnish lands close to Saint Petersburg, which he had made his capital in 1712 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1712). He gained access to a warm-water-port during his reign for easier trading with the Western world.

Peter I's last years were marked by further reform in Russia. On 22 October (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_22) 1721 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1721), soon after peace was made with Sweden, he was acclaimed Emperor of All Russia. Some proposed that he take the title Emperor of the East, but he refused. Gavrila Golovkin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gavrila_Golovkin), the State Chancellor, was the first to add "the Great, Father of His Country, Emperor of All the Russias (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_the_Russias)" to Peter's traditional title Tsar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsar) following a speech by the archbishop of Pskov (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pskov) in 1721.
Peter's imperial title was recognized by Augustus II of Poland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augustus_II_of_Poland), Frederick William I of Prussia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_William_I_of_Prussia) and Frederick I of Sweden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_I_of_Sweden), but not by the other European monarchs. In the minds of many, the word emperor connoted superiority or pre-eminence over "mere" kings. Several rulers feared that Peter would claim authority over them, just as the Holy Roman Emperor had once claimed suzerainty over all Christian nations.
Peter also reformed the government of the Russian Orthodox Church (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Orthodox_Church). The traditional leader of the Church was the Patriarch of Moscow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Metropolitans_and_Patriarchs_of_Moscow). In 1700, when the office fell vacant, Peter had refused to name a replacement, allowing the Patriarch's Coadjutor (or deputy) to discharge the duties of the office. Twenty-one years later, in 1721, Peter followed the advice of Feofan Prokopovich (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feofan_Prokopovich) and erected the Holy Synod (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_Synod), a council of ten clergymen, to take the place of the Patriarch and Coadjutor.Peter also implemented a law which stipulated that no Russian man can join a monastery before the age of 50. He felt that too many able Russian men were being wasted away by clerical work when they could be joining his new and improved army. And in 18th century Russia, few people (men and women) rarely lived to over a half century, therefore very few men became monks during Peter's reign, much to the dismay of the Russian Church.

In 1722 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1722), Peter created a new order of precedence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_precedence), known as the Table of Ranks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_of_Ranks). Formerly, precedence had been determined by birth. In order to deprive the Boyars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boyars) of their high positions, Peter directed that precedence should be determined by merit and service to the Emperor. The Table of Ranks continued to remain in effect until the Russian monarchy was overthrown in 1917.In addition, Peter decided that all of the children of the nobility should have some early education, especially in the areas of sciences. Therefore, on February 28th 1714, he introduced the decree on compulsory education which dictated that all Russian children of the nobility, of government clerks and even lesser ranked officials between the ages of 10 and 15 must learn basic mathematics and geometry and that they should be tested on it at the end of their studies.

Peter also introduced new taxes to fund improvements in Saint Petersburg. He abolished the land tax and household tax, and replaced them with a capitation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitation). The taxes on land on households were payable only by individuals who owned property or maintained families; the new head taxes, however, were payable by serfs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serf) and paupers.
In 1724 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1724), Peter had his second wife, Catherine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catherine_I_of_Russia), crowned as Empress, although he remained Russia's actual ruler. All of Peter's male children had died—the eldest son, Alexei (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsarevich_Alexei_Petrovich_of_Russia), had been tortured and killed on Peter's orders in 1718 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1718) because he had disobeyed his father and opposed official policies. At the same time, Alexei's mother Eudoxia had also been punished; she was dragged from her home and tried on false charges of adultery. A similar fate befell Peter's beautiful mistress, Anna Mons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Mons), in 1724 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1724).
In 1725 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1725), construction of Peterhof (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peterhof), a palace near St Petersburg, was completed. Peterhof (Dutch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_language) for "Peter's Court") was a grand residence, becoming known as the "Russian Versailles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palace_of_Versailles)".

In the winter of 1723 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1723), Peter, whose overall health was never robust, began having problems with his urinary tract (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urinary_tract) and bladder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urinary_bladder). In the summer of 1724 a team of doctors performed the necessary surgery releasing upwards of four pounds of blocked urine. Peter remained bedridden till late autumn. Then in the first week of October, restless and certain he was cured, Peter began a lengthy inspection tour of various projects. According to tradition, it was in November, while at Lakhta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lakhta) along the Finnish Gulf to inspect some ironworks, that Peter saw a group of soldiers drowning not far from shore and, wading out into near-waist deep water, came to their rescue.

This icy water rescue is said to have exacerbated Peter's bladder problems and caused his death on January 28 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_28), 1725 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1725). The story, however, has been viewed with skepticism by some historians, pointing out that the German chronicler Jacob von Stählin (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jacob_von_St%C3%A4hlin&action=edit) is the only source for the story, and it seems unlikely that no one else would have documented such an act of heroism. This, plus the interval of time between these actions and Peter's death seems to preclude any direct link. However, the story may still, in part, contain some grain of truth.
In early January 1725, Peter was struck once again with uremia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uremia). Legend has it that before lapsing into unconsciousness Peter asked for a paper and pen and scrawled an unfinished note that read: "Leave all to...." and then, exhausted by the effort, asked for his daughter Anna to be summoned.[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_I_of_Russia#_note-6)
Peter died between four and five in the morning January 28 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_28), 1725 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1725). An autopsy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autopsy) revealed his bladder to be infected with gangrene (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gangrene). He was fifty-two years, seven months old when he died, having reigned forty-two years.

Many emotions swept through Russia, indeed throughout all of Europe, on the news of Peter's death, but genuine grief was not shared by all. In the words of Russian historian P. Kovalevsky:
"We could enthuse forever about the greatness of Peter's actions and still not depict in all its fullness, brilliance and worth everything that he accomplished...But in creating, he destroyed. He caused pain to all in whom he came into contact. He disturbed the safety, peace, prosperity, interests, strength, well-being, rights and dignity of everyone he touched. He made things unpleasant for everyone. He did harm to everyone. He touched intellectual, political, social, financial, family, moral and spiritual interests. Is it possible to love such a statesman? In no way. Such men are hated."

thats probobly hard to do with total war engine,
where there actually units like winged hussars cos they look crazy!!

They were real, allright, and they kicked Swedish behinds royally on several occasions. Unfortunately, during the GNW the military science had passed them by. In several carolean diaries its written how beautiful the Polish Crown army looked at the battle of Klissow 1702 in their polished, gilded and silvered armor, wings, silk and lace, and how sorry the Swedish soldiers was to have to shoot at such a pretty display. The standards of beauty were different in the baroque era, and flamboyancy was not nessecarily a bad thing.

'European Wars' is set in the XVIII century beginning in 1700 and is a precursor to Empire: TW. In this period three great wars took place in Europe – Spanish succession war, Great North War (between Sweden and Russia) and the Seven years war. In mod, you will see the infantry of Peter I the Great, famous musketeers of Louis XIV and grenadiers of Friedrich II the Great.

Italy = Venice, Genoa, Tuscany, Modena, Florence, Savoy, Milan, Papal States, Trient. No unified Italy until late 19th Century.

Naples= Controlled by France, Austria and Spain during the 18th Century.
French to 1714, Austrian 1734 then Spanish.

Just to clear up some historical things.

This would be a wild guess; the top one - French Musketeer (The Guards unit, -Athos, Portos, Aramis, et c.)

The bottom one - French line infantry grenadieer, pre 1715.

The basic color of French Guards units and Regiments Etrangers were blue, and the basic color of line infantry were gray before 1715 and white after.

The basic color of cavalry were red.

If i remember correctly...:inquisitive:

OK!
Next try. The lower one; The skirts of the coat are connected, which non-swedish units didn't adopt untill after the 1720's The shape of the wig, together with the fact that its powdered suggests after 1730's, which the fact that the soldier carries a cutlass instead of a rapier also suggests. The lapels of the chest looks like the lapels of the Swedish 1756 model uniform.
The shape of the (bearskin?) cap looks like it's influenced by the hungarian hussar cap...

Austro - Hungarian line infantry grenadieer from the seven years war?

OK! At least i'm trying...:beam:

I would have guessed the French(who just happen to be my favorites during this period)as well, so that got shot down pretty quickly. Maybe Saxons? That is just a wild guess, but I figured hey, why not? Anyway, I've been keeping an eye on this mod-in-the-making and I'm quite glad that someone decided to take on this particular challenge. I would like to add this reminder, however, : The period to be covered in EW also included the War of the Austrian Succession so I hope that conflict will be given its rightful place in this mod. That said, Godspeed to the creative genius(es)behind this work. For what this is worth, you have my emotional support if nothing else.

I hope my favorite infantry from this period, the French, will be depicted in this mod in their silvergray coats. Unfortunately, that isn't always the case in wargames set in this time.

great work guys they look fancy but only one question how come the polish have their own jannisary units in the game? i know that for some time ottomans ruled some of the southern poland and as a result ottoman empire used polish auxiliaries on some occasions but in no way i think that the polish would have adopted the turkish system of military. is there any historical source on this? or is just for putting more colour into the mod? but i must admit they look nice.

K.L.A., you couldn't have asked an easier question as far as I'm concerned. It must be the French with their silvergray infantry coats - simply irresistable!! Les Francaises are my wargaming favorites from around 1480 to around 1830 so this choice is a clear-cut no-brainer for me. Thanks for asking.

I cannot register or even see ETW site due to a large pop-up that obliterates the screen and does not go away!
I have pop-ups blocked on my computer.
Help anyone?
Thanks

If you might add Italy, then maybe add Savoy and the Kingdom of Naples, would ask the Lordz what Italian kingdoms were really important or look at TW: Napoleon 1 Italian factions.:england: :france: :denmark:

I like this. The French are my favorites in this period but their Bavarian allies(for as long as they were able to stay in the war, which unfortunately, wasn't very long)are also a welcome addition. Do you have any screenshots for the Bavarians yet? I guess you will post some when you do. I hope your Bavarian infantry(the line units, anyway)will be depicted in those bright blue coats that were a hallmark of theirs. They will come in handy to give the French an occasional rest from those grueling battles in the Total War series that we all have come to know and love.

If i were able to vote (:furious3:) i would have chosen the Danes just coz im Danish :laugh4: and want to have super Navy and rule Europe! I'll leave Sweden and Finland (and meby GB depends if they make me mad) alone Cos i have friends that have ethnic backgrounds from those countries. As far as Prussia and Russia is concerned. Saxony will be 15th playable faction.
It won't be one faction with Poland as I wrote before.

Anybody have new proposal?

'European Wars' - a mod which takes us in 18th century century. It is an age of 'Empire: Total War' which was announced long time ago. There are 2 developing versions of this mod: for 'Rome: Total War' and 'Medieval 2: Total War'. After 'Empire TW' release, 'European Wars' will be a Realism-Mod for this game.

It's a first units preview of "European Wars" mod on Medieval II Total War. Preview is historical, also very good about graphic side.
I shave made heavy cavalry units (Cuirassiers and Elite Guards). For example: Prussian Cuirassiers, French Mousqetaires, Russian Life Guards and Polish Winged Hussars. As well preview include game's screens and many lots grenadier's hats to show. I want to say especially thanks for team Lordz (NTW2) and "Ogniem i Mieczem's" (With Fire and Sword) team for use parts of units.

You're already working on the ETW realism mod? The RTW and M2TW versions still haven't been released yet. I thought I saw the RTW version was done, why hasn't that been released? Are you waiting until you finish the ETW realism mod to release the RTW and M2TW versions. So you can release all three versions at once? I thought you'd release the RTW and M2TW versions first.

What you've previewed looks great, I really can't wait. I hope you'll release at least the RTW version soon, ETW is coming out in just a few days.

'European Wars' - a mod which takes us in 18th century. It is an age of 'Empire: Total War' which was announced long time ago. There are 2 developing versions of this mod: for 'Rome: Total War' and 'Medieval 2: Total War'. After 'Empire TW' release, 'European Wars' will be a Realism-Mod for this game.

This is the last preview before mod's release! Preview of French units is historically the most accurate and the best done preview of 'European Wars' so far. Over 30 different units, including cavalry, infantry and many elite guard units of which France was famous for. There will be Mousqetaires, Gendarmes or awesome grenadiers, additionaly historical character of marshall of France. Variety of hats, uniforms, boots and... haircuts! France in period of Louis' XIV rules and his grandson Louis XV, great power and great looser in 18th age at the same time, had huge significance in the age, this is why this fraction is presented as the last one before the first version of the mod. King Louise Assurbanipal (me) is Units' author. Special Thanks for Lordz (NTW2) and 'With Fire and Sword'. in this preview there are some elements of units from those mods.

Special Thanks for Lordz (NTW2) and 'With Fire and Sword'. in this preview there are some elements of units from those mods.

i'm glad you're going to release a full version...but i have a question : is this mod mainly for multiplayer, just as napoleonic2 was? i mean, i played napoleonic2 in single player a lot, but it's very easy ,because of the AI keeping all his army in skirmish mode, so if i send only 2 units of my cavalry towards the enemy army, THEY ALL ROUT...so that kinda sucks...and as far as i know, nobody managed to solve this problem...

It's a first units preview of "European Wars" mod on Empire Total War. Preview is more historical than standard units in Empire TW.
I have made heavy cavalry units (Cuirassiers and Elite Guards) and Grenadiers. For example: French Mousqetaires, Russian Life Guards, Swedish Grenadiers. I want to say especially thanks for lesterthenerd, (and Ikusa IX, Yoda Twin). They made these screens. Units in renders have parts of Lordz.

The AI in the EW mod is very different though compared to N2TW. if you put it on a wide scale, the AI is similar to that of RTW standards. The AI will often attempt to flank your force with either cavalry or infantry. but this is because the AI thinks it's commanding Roman Cohorts because the infantry units fire a volley and charge when you order them to attack a spacific unit. Same goes with the cavalry as well :juggle2:

not to be mean or play down the quality of the models in the previews, but i was wondering if the in-game units look better than in the previews. i know it is unlikely to be of E:TW quality, but i hope it is very good quality.

also a couple other questions:

is there a link where i can download just the units, not the entire mod?

is there a significant difference between the mod and vanilla?

Welcome everybody. I've got official new for the fans. Release of EW1 will be in July 2010. I apologize for that, you have to wait so long, but there was no other away to do this.
I didn't want to move the day of release all the time, one month further and make to early hopes. At the time only two people work on EW1 for RTW: Me and Sebulba . Salvo and rest work on EW2 for ETW. Modding of so big project takes a lot of time. Especially when we are only two guys working on it. Besides, I have to create EW2. We've got a lot of things to do in our private life too. Private life and modding can't be match perfectly, college is of course more important that game, I hope you'll understand me. Not long ago, there was a release of new game NTW and i'm going to play a little that game. Except of pleasure for modding, I'd like to feel the pleasure for playing NTW and test it abilities. In April, I'm planing to publish my last skinpack of ancient units for RTW.
Well, will you ask me what about EW1 ? So i'll answer you than. I've just finished preview of my last faction. But I've to alignment rosters and put a couple of units for earlier nations, for expample Frei-corps for Prussia. We have to change the statistics together. It's important to translate mod to English. At being time, we've all the descriptions in Polish.
To the July 2010 for 100% mod surly will be ready. You will got a full, completly finished mod, ready to play.

SCOTTISH JACOBITE PREVIEW:

This is the last unit preview before the official release European Wars 1 (on RTW). The 14th faction are Scotts from the age of Jacobite Rebellion against England.
The age of rebellions started in 1689 with Dundee's rebellion, stoke by followers of the Stuart dynasty. Every of that insurgency was made, to cap Stuarts on Scottish throne. The uprisings was in: 1708, 1715 (First Great Rebellion), 1719 and in 1744. The last one "Second Great Rebellion" was in 1745. Preview for Scottish units is one of the most historically exact and the prettiest one. Player find here 20 different units (cavalry, infantry and many elite units within). Insurgency army was very different. There were mainly Scottish highlanders with "kilt" clothes, as well as regular Scottish forces, French (Irish regiments) and Spanish reinforcements. Those countries wants Stuarts on Scottish throne also. These set of units is far better than what we get in Empire TW. Maybe graphic is poorer but there are way more clothes details and historical design than in ETW. As an author of this presentation (King Louise Assurbanipal) Special Thanks to : Lordz (NTW2) and 'Ogniem i Mieczem' for lending me some parts of unit details.
