Welcome to the Official Signup Thread for Last of the Romans the official successor to the vastly popular King of the Romans!
Below you will find the players from KotR listed in order of their activity. The information for this is taken from looking at all the Diet threads and cross-checking it with the last KotR PBM Orders and Report Thread (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=77311) from KotR.
Everyone who participated in the Test Game (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=102629) recieved an extra activity point.
If I missed something please tell me about it and also provide the necessary link/s so I can check it.
If you want to join LotR please post in this thread and I will update the table accordingly.
Once we have recruited general bodyguards (RGB) within the game we will start distributing them together with the two available family members (FM), Aleksios Komenus, the Faction Leader and Ioannis, the Faction Heir.
The avatars will be distributed in order of total activity, so the person with the highest activity will be the first to choose his RBG or FM, this will continue until every player is in possesion of an avatar.

If you did not take part in KotR feel free to sign up too and I will put you down on the list and you will be assigned a RBG just like (most) everybody else.

yeah the orders and reports thread hadn't had activity updated for a long time. I think I've had about 5 now, definately more than 3 anyway.
But it doesn't matter anyway as I'm happy with a RBG.

Hi,
I am pretty new to the community, kind of a MTW to Paradox back to M2TW heathen convert.
I felt KotR was a wonderful innovative project with many twists and turns. I was not involved in that project so I will start with 0 activity and I understand the pursuit for eager gamers.
I would be very happy to be a part of LotR, playing in any way i would certainly enjoy to get get involved as a RBG if and when something pops up for me.
I declare my wish to officially sign up.

I'm going to hold off on general advertising (outside of my sig, that is) for a couple days to see how many people we have in just from the Throne Room. Enthusiasm for the game is already pretty high just within the Throne Room. A 60 person first Senate session would be total chaos.

Since we only have two FM's, if we get many more FM sign-ups than that, maybe we should hold a vote, OOC, to assign them. Most of the top of the list is going to defer, and I don't know if plus or minus a handful of diet votes should decide it, especially with the uneven distrubtion of diet sessions (most in the early game). We could only have one vote, with the runner-up getting the faction heir.
I'm going to make this a bit easier. Since we're apparently going to be spawning a ton of avatars right at the start, we can skip the FM/RBG choice. Before we assign avatars, I will create the new Senate Library/Info Post Thing, which will include the mugshots of all the avatars available from the beginning of the game. I will then go down the list from highest priority to lowest. When it is your turn, you can pick any of the avatars that remain untaken, or defer for a new RBG, at which point you go to the bottom of the pile. So, on the current ranking (which may be inaccurate) OK would go first and can pick any of the avatars he wants, FM or RBG. Then econ21 (if he's playing) and I would choose from the ones that remain, minus OK's selection. We continue down until all spawned avatars are picked. As new RBGs are spawned, we will continue working down the list in this way until everyone has an avatar. In the case of people who have the same priority level, I will use random.org to choose which order they pick in.

I've changed the first thread to represent the changes mentioned by TinCow and also took the opportunity to go over all 15 Diet Sessions and add up the activity for all players. That's why I'm not at the max on mine as well, just wasn't paying attention to the time limit during one random session. It's not a perfect system, but it's the most impartial one I can think of. In any case, I don't think having a low priority will cause much of a problem. If you really don't like anything available, you can just defer. If you're willing to wait, you'll eventually get what you want.

I just picked up a book to do some research on the Byzantines.
It's A Short History of Byzantium by John Julius Norwich. I picked it up from Borders for 18 bucks. It's not scholarly but it seems to provide a basic overview for those who don't want to do a graduate level reading list just to prepare for a game. For those who do want to do a graduate level reading list, I can provide some book names but I haven't read them. :book:

I have the three volume version of that, and I suspect you have the condensed one volume (paperback?) version.
I'd recommend either, it's what I read before doing my Byzantine AAR.
Norwich focuses on the Emperors and the personalities and events surrounding them. For an indepth study of the army or civil structure of the Empire, you'd have to go someplace else.

Nope just the patch that is linked to in the fist post. It doesn't alter the game at all but allows you to play saves that people with Kingdoms have played.

Having seen his posts for an rp forum, I can attest that TheFlax is a very skillful roleplayer, able to manage many different kinds of characters. :yes:

I was actually counting on that to happen and its not a problem for me, I'd still play her after she is married. :yes:

I get worried whenever a group of men sit down to play a blood-n-guts medieval war game and they end up deciding to "take turns being the princess".
That being said, I volunteer to be the first princess.

I figured as much for no voting, no running for office, no advancing in rank. That being said if I don't mind losing all of that, could I play the princess as my main character? I usually like playing a "supporting" role in games anyways.

Of course, the princess is often little more than a "tool" for her family. Exactly, at best she could try to influence the decision, but her father gets the final word. I recall that the first christian king of what is now Russia wanted to seal the deal with the Byzantine Empire by marrying the emperor's sister. At first he agreed, but once his sister begged him not to be married of to a northern "barbarian" he called of the deal. War ensued, the Empire had too many problems and the emperor sued for peace, thus giving away his sister in marriage even though she still protested.
But EO was actually a woman...Flax is not...
Fortunately, because of the Alexiad, there is a good amount of information available on Anna Komnenos. I believe I found two books on her and then there are a few books on women (mostly imperial women) in the time we are playing. All of the above should help me craft a believable persona that you will all hopefully enjoy interacting with. :beam:

If Flax wants to RP Anna, I have no problem with it. However as the FL I'm either going to marry her off to a RGB or a foreign Prince at some point. This would mean that her avatar would disappear from the campaign map.
Now that wouldn't stop any additional RPing, but if Flax wants to fully participate in the game (vote and fight) he'd be better off with a Senator.
Just my two cents.
Uh, If I'd known how you guys would react I wouldn't have tried to joke about RPing a princess. What I tried to say that I'm happy playing whatever elector I get assigned.

We already have 30 people signed up. That's plenty for the first Senate session. I would prefer to hold off on advertisement until we're a few turns into the game. It will be easier to absorb people at that time and newbies with no knowledge of the game will be able to see it in action.

As all other players got to pick from a selection of avatars, I will continue that policy for players joining later. If either of you don't like your avatar, I will kill them off and recruit a fresh batch for you to pick from next turn. If this is requested, I will simply recruit a bunch (3-4) in some out of the way spot for you to pick from. I will teleport the ones you chose to your starting locations and dump the rest in the ocean.
Such a tragic waste of life, reminds me of test tube babies, dump the un needed ones in the ocean. :clown:

If you hang out in a city with a church (other than Constantinople) you will gain traits which will increase your Piety, Morale, and Law, but decrease your Loyalty slightly. Theoretically, you could also hang out in a castle with a Library building, and gain movement points, command, law, and chivalry, but I don't think we have any castles with Libraries yet.

Well, take a look at your avatar, his traits, and try and get a feel for what kind of person you want to make him. Then you might want to read some of the various House threads and see what they represent and where they own lands. You can then decide whether you want to join a House or go it alone. There are people who have done both, so you'll have company no matter what you decide. Feel free to contact people in the public threads or privately via PM if this helps in your decision. Essentially, think about what you want to do in the game. Achieve high rank? Conquer a certain area? Found your own House? Kill a particularly annoying player? Whatever your objective is, that's your game, and that objective can easily change over time.
In the short term, the basic building block of power for all avatars is land. Once you get a province of your own, you gain a lot more bargaining power to achieve whatever it is you want to achieve. You don't NEED a province, but the game will probably be more interesting once you have one.
And yes, read the FAQ and Rules.

I think that depends entirely on whether Stainless Steel 4.1 works with the german version. My instinct says that it does, but I don't have a non-English version of the game, so I don't know for sure. I think that at worst it would simply make the in-game text display in english rather than german, but that it would otherwise work properly. If you could deal with the game text being in english, you would probably be ok.
My suggestion would be to make a backup copy of your entire M2TW install folder. Just hit copy when the folder is highlighted, then his paste to create a duplicate of it (this will take up a lot of HD space). Then install SS 4.1 over the top of your german version of M2TW and see if it works. If it does not, you can just delete folder with SS 4.1 in it and rename the duplicate copy folder to the original folder name and the game should work properly again.
That said, we have a lot of people in LotR who do not hail from nations with English as a primary language. Perhaps some of them will have more information on how well SS 4.1 works with other versions of the game.

Too bad the anglophile in me purchased the original English copy of Medieval II Total War. I did however have the the German version of Rome Total War and it worked fine with the bigger mods out there. The mods were definetly in English, but I think there were some German fragments left. It didn't bother me though.
I'd love to have the original english version, but I couldn't find it anywhere here...
I just didnt want to spend the money to let it ship from the US, but the german language version sucks so much I might just stillt get the english gold edition or something...
But as for now: I installed Stainless Steel and the patch and it seems to work... HAven't installed the LOTR Mod yet though. Maybe I should get used to Stainless Steel gameplay before joining LotR ;)

Welcome Alerion, you just have to decide if you want an available avatar from the family tree or an RBG, if there isn't any available one can be created. Install the mod and grab the latest save and explore the Empire to decide what you want to do.

I am in the midst of moving and cannot access the game. I'm pretty sure that a couple avatars have come of age, but I can't get into the game to check. Can someone else take a look and post here to help Alerion? Specifically, the family members that are about at the right age to appear are Sophronios Komnenos, Ammonathas Kalameteros, and Ioannis Tagaris. If any of them are currently of-age, please post a mugshot for them.
Alternatively, Alerion can download the save and check to see if they are of-age himself. Alerion, if you do not like any of the family members (or none are of-age and you do not want to wait for one) we can spawn recruitable bodyguards for you. The usual routine is to spawn 3 of them, from which you can pick your favorite. I will then teleport the RBG to whereever you want to start.
I checked through the save, and Ammonathas should come of age within the next ten turns (bloody memory and vodka :laugh4:), and Sophronios Komnenos and Ioannis Tagaris are all of age although IIRC, Tristan wanted Ioannis Tagaris as his next Avatar. I'll post mugshots when I can remember how...
Well looked through the save and Ioannis Tagaris would be my first choice but if he is reserved I`ll go with Sophronios.

Hello all! I saw the new game, decided to check it out. So I am considering joining, because KotR was fun (And after reading the Rules this is similar, very, coincidentally.)
I need to install Stainless Steel though; does this require Kingdoms, or is it okay just with patched M2TW? And is there any more room for me? I would love to join.
Nope, no need for Kingdoms. SS 4.1 is the last version that was released for M2TW without Kingdoms, which is why we use it. You should find all the info on installation here (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showpost.php?p=1988289&postcount=3). We'll help you out if you have any problems.

Welcome CV, Should not be a problem you may have a choice of a family member coming of age (some have been reserved) but there are a few coming in to play or an RBG that can be recruited by TC. We just have the turn held for a player vs player scenario. Once that is completed the turn will move ahead and you can see what you can pick from in the next turn. :2thumbsup:
Welcome! Yes, I killed off all the extra RBGs yesterday. No big loss though, as most of the interesting ones had already been taken. The three Komnenos boys (nephews of the current Basileus) are about to come of age. The middle one, Ioannis, is already reserved for Ignoramus, but the oldest (Evmathios) and youngest (Appollonas) are still up for grabs. I think Evmathios will spawn next turn, and Appollonas 2-3 turns after him. You can reserve one of them if you want a family member. Otherwise, I will queue up 5 RBGs for you to pick from. They will spawn on the next turn, which will hopefully be Monday or Tuesday, due to a temporary game pause for a PvP battle.

Sounds good. I'm not sure of the timing, but it is possible Appollonas won't have spawned by the time we get to the upcoming Senate session which is also a couple turns away. If he doesn't, you have my permission to still post and vote as him with the rank of Strator during the Senate session.
