View Full Version : 25000 players

I have read over at totalwar.com in the recent news update that 25000 players have played STW online over the last five days.

25000?!?!?!

Am I the only one who finds this figure to be wishful thinking? Sure, I want to believe it as much as anyone, but as I have never seen more than 80 players online at once, 25000 seems a strange figure. No doubt some of this is the result of people having multiple names and maybe these are responsible. Or perhaps this is a count of the number of logons, in other words every time you log on it counts 1. I would be very interested to here where these figures came from, and whether there are indeed more of us than we think http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

hmm... that would be a number of hits/log-ins, quite sure about that one

(you know those handful folks playing online, logging on and off all the time, every day...)

Oh yeah. there's no way it's a number referring to 25000 different users playing over one week. Just the same people who log on and off. My guess is the FearfulWays Clan makes up about 25-30% of that figure, anyhow...

Yeah, Ironlung is right.

I think the key lies in the number of players in the Florida state (US of A).

Recount !!!!

You talkin bout me http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

Well I do log in and out alot, just to check on things.

Is there a hotkey to minimize Shogun, so I don't have to log out to check on the Org?

Hmm...2,500 players perhaps....25,000 drops and attempts to reconnect perhaps.

I don't think it's even 2,500. I hope EA thinks it's 25,000. They'll be more likely to support online play, and not pull the plug.

The login screen is so confusing. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/confused.gif I think I logged into Unreal when I really wanted to connect to Shogun instead. Can I be on CNN now? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/cool.gif

LOL Soly!!
We ARE on an awful lot and play a lot of comp games don't we? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
They may be referring to the number of people that played a single game. Thus, if 4 Fears played 3 4 on 4s that would come out to 3 games times 8 players each game = 24 people. Or not, LOL Cya on the battlefield, Elmarko

To avoid those long long-in hassles with the EA server, I use a shortcut:
I press my thumbs against my eyes for a few minutes and after a bit, there are plenty of little samurai running around on fields and the best part is, there's always a game to join!

The actual quote from totalwar.com is this:

"Shogun Total war is proving to be a very popular on-line gaming experience with over 25000 people playing in the last five days alone."

Which definitely suggests 25000 separate players. Presumably this is just hyping the game up?

Thanx Elmark...I knew you could do it, just didn't know how.

Guys, remember right after the 1.11 patch they said Shogun was experiencing a rebirth in sales again in the stores...sounds like the same overexaggeration to me http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

25K sounds impressive tho http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

It would be nice if there was 25,000 players though. After all, the game sold pretty well AFAIK, so why are there so few people playing online?

Pity there isn't anything much that can be done about it now http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

". . . with over 25000 people playing in the last five days alone."

That's a lie! I'm going to prove it by not playing anymore; then it will be only 24,999 players!

Hah! That'll show 'em!

I just did a manual recount and found that the "HangingChad" Clan was responsible for a good 17% of the players online. There were a number of Shoguns who accidently logged onto AOE when they thought they were logging onto Shogun Total War and they demand that there be a recount. This would bring the total up to almost 30,000.

25000 over 3 days, that is around 8000 per day.

Of course you dont see them all at the same time in the chat lobby !!!

People log on only for 1 or 2 hours, sometimes less. I could believe that 8000 people logged on at least once (no matter how long) over a period of 24 hours; here at the forums we only see the iceberg cap of the online community. Many people I met playing never knew about this and other forums. This past tourney held by the Fears clan was full of "walk ins", most of these never knew a Tourney was going to be held and had never visited a forum.

We, my friends, in these forums, are but a few of the "on liners".

and Methabaron's explanation has me thinking that we inhabit but one lonely site in some distant spiral arm in the great Total War galaxy...

Heheee

But let's do some more maths (bear with me guys, I'm a boring engineer) !!

8000 log ins per day.
There are 1440 minutes in a day.
That makes an average of 5.5 log ins per minute...

Now, if we asume that at any given time there is a an average of 60 players online (being optimistic), then we have that the average online time of a Shogun player is 60/5.5 = 11 minutes !!!!

No way !!!!!!!!!!!

Only if you acknowledge that any given player logs off and on at least twice or three times (crap connection, crashes etc etc) when on line then and only then the official claim of 8000 logging in per day starts to make sense.

Which basically means that in reality you only have pretty much around 2000-2500 REAL persons logging in (up to 3 or 4 times due to crashes or other reasons) in a given day.

Meth,
It was 25000 in 5 days, not 3 man. So please post another long, drawn out math reply to recalculate your totals. It is late and I need somethin to help me sleep. http://members.tripod.com/smilecwm/cgi-bin/s/net2/zzzsleep.gif

Allright here it goes !!!!

5000 log ins per day (they also reported 7000 hits in one single day so I wasnt that off)

There are 1440 minutes in a day.
That makes an average of 3.5 log ins per minute...

Average number of players online at a given time = 60 (asumed)

Average online time of a Shogun player = 60/3.5= 17 minutes

Still, no way, I guess.

It all depends on the REAL average daily time spent online you asume (adding all the times you log in in that day). If you asume 1 hour, then the average player logs in an average 3 or 4 times every day he connects (60/17=3.5)... so the REAL number of daily players is 5000/3.5 = 1400 !!!

****THIS JUST IN*****
****SWORD DOJO UPDATE****
***URGENT BULLETIN***

MagyarKhan, winner of the first flawed EA/Play tournament, has complained about Methabaron's "fuzzy math".

"I have 17 simultaneous logins to EA/Play at any one time on my network of TotalWar dedicated computers, all under various pseudonymns, of course. I alone can account for close to 3000 of the daily logins alone. Using my demondialer, I login and off an average of 12 to 17 times a minute with each computer."

Local Experts have extrapolated this out to mean that there are actually only 3-7 "real" people logged into EA/Play at any one time.

"Wanna ride my horsies?" replied Maggy.

for me it is simple:
or they wrongtyped a 0 too much
or they just count the people who enter and leave the foyer

but there were never ever 25000 people online, how many bags do i need for 50000 ears?

Message from AA:

Beer and maths are totally incompatible.

Don't try to repeat Metha's experience without strict supervision at home. Too dangerous.

Dont try to explain no log in bullsh%^t while under alcohol influence, specially when official news come also under suspicious circumstances which could easily explain the exagerations, i.e. drugs, sex, rock & roll, or even doughnuts.

Yeah, I'm Metha, I do maths while having beer...
