Battles of the Arche Seleukeia

This thread is for all Battle Reports. Any post in this thread which is not a Battle Report will be moved or deleted.

Note: Battle Reports can be extensive multi-part IC stories, but they can also just be OOC brief summaries of the action. The nature and length of the report is entirely up to you. It is encouraged that everyone post at least the final results of the battle, either typed out or by posting a screenshot of the results scroll that appears at the end of the battle. It is however crucial that we know what type of victory or defeat the battle ended in, since it influences the rank of a character (it must therefore be seen in a screenshot or typed as an aside).

encript from "A history of hellenic civilisation - Chapter 4, tactical doctorine" by Giddens and Goldborn

.....though as a rule of thumb, commanders used whatever means they could to deprive their enemies of high ground to avoid such giving their enemies such an obvious advantage.

A prime example of this is an otherwise minor engagement faught somewhere on a hill road between Susa and Babylon in modern day Iraq, in 272 BC, between seleucid forces, and persian rebels, both sides numbering roughly 2000 men.

The persian rebels were composed of spearmen who also had bows, and the sparabara, made famous by earlier engagements between various greek forces and the persian empire, meanwhile, like most seleucid armies of the time, very few greeks were avaliable for combat, its believed the only 100 colonist from what was the city state of Thessilia were avaliable for the battle, who faught as heavy cavalry, the rest of the seleucid army was made up of both spearmen and slingers native to mesopatania, who had greek officers but were not trained in hellenic tactics themselves.

Put simply, both armies had relativly even numbers of troops of faily even quality, this should have been a relativly easy battle for the rebels to win, even though they lacked any cavalry.
However, the commander of seleucid forces was one Timarchos Mysiakes, who came from a region known as Sogdion, in modern day Afganistan and was used to hill fighting.

Mysiakes drew he army across the battlefeild in a line, crucially, his cavalry was on the far left, whilst his slingers occupied the centre.
In a simmilar action to the much more famous battle of Hastings, the slingers drew the rebel sparabara downhill whilst the cavalry moved un-noticed behind the crest of the hill.
When the sparabara engaged the seleucid spearmen, the cavalry charged over the crest and down the hill, in a few short hours the battle was over, with the seleucids as clear winners.

Some scholars, such as Baddaly and Bandura, argue that such a victory would be impossible for a phalax based army to win, due to the sheer exhertion involved in raising a sassara to a steep enough angle and keeping it there whilst on a hill.
Though these are in the minority, and it should be noted that phalax's were accompinied most of the time by lighter infantry, (such as peltists, royal guards or various mercinaries and auxillia, galatians seem to have been especally favoured for this role.) who could fight on broken and uneven ground better than the phalax.

In any case this skirmish, though minor, and seemingly of no great importance, marks the start of one of the most colourful period in hellenic history......

272 - CV

Timarchos Anaias Mysiakes was bored and tired, gently bobbing up and down with the movements on his horse on the way to Babylon, the mesopatanian sun gently beating down on him, in his armour, as his slaves were left in Susa, and the baggage train that carried in through the summer was taken back with the units he borrowed from the cities garrison.
He looked to his right, another faceless mountain stared back at him, returning his gaze to the front of him, he saw a hazy horizon,
"probably a trade convoy" he muttered, and drifted off.

He awoke momments later with a start, as an arrow hit him full force in the stomarch, he double taked, starring first at his stomarch, a small dent in his armour was the only evidence that he'd been struck, then he looked up, the haze on the horizon was in fact 80 bowmen, oppertunistic bandits at best, he looked at his somotopalykes, drew his sword and screamed charge.......

Less than a minute later Mysiakes found himself looking back at 70 corpses, only 3 of which were his men, he smiled, probably the easiest victory in the history of the arche, he thought to himself.

271 - Autumn

Dawn

Timarchos Anaias Mysiakes woke with a massive headache, cursing Mithras for sending him a glorified barbarian drinks mixer instead of a doctor, he strode outside his tent to find Dion, the greek captian of the royal army Timarchos was commanding waiting for him, Timarchos, in no mood to hear Dion's loud barking voice screaming order's all day long decided to cut him off before he spoke.
"Captian, we are but a short distance away from the enemy, we will march in kit, I want you to move through all the troops on the march and make sure they are prepared for contact at any momment"

Then Timarchos half ran away from the man, the sound of his own footstep's were like symbol's banging.
Making a mental note to have his herbalist Tomayris whipped, he prepared himself for battle.

Mid morning,

Timarchos looked downhill at his enemies, his guard were a good 5 minutes walk ahead of the main army, with the skirmishers in tow, he asked his swordbearer come adviser Cadayren if that was all they'd brought, Cadayren nodded, so Timarchos addressed his the captians of his advance force.

"No point waiting for the phalax, we can finish this ourselves, you'll space yourselves our, one unit of you by the tree's on each side of this clearing, another right here, loosen off a few volly's so their archers go loose and move away from their infantry, when they do, we'll charge down, get the attention of their spearmen, who'll chase us back up the hill, but will stop when we move around 'em to hit their archers again, then, they'll either move down to try and help their mates, in which case, shoot them in the back and we'll win, or they'll chase after you, in which case, shoot them in the face and we'll win.... oh... and win before the phalax arrive and everything they have is yours to loot"

https://img254.imageshack.us/img254/2586/0013wc3.jpg (https://imageshack.us)

Dusk

"you could have at least let us help loot them!" dion barked
"for the last time, I dont care, now fetch me a messenger, I need to inform the council of this"
Timarchos' order was partly to shut the captian up, who'd been complaining ever since his personally trained phalax didn't even get to see a living enemy.
Feeling bad about himself, Timarchos called Dion back
"don't worry, there's a army of around equal size of our's that you can help me with if whoever's army this is now will let me." Timarchos said, as he handed him a note
"we can only hope, sir"
"Hope I didn't seam too arrogent or forceful when I suggested my promotion.....hmm"

Battle of Pamphylia, Autumn 272 BC

Bloody anti-aliasing screwed up my screenies.
Heroic Victory

Cunobelinus marched his army off the ships, but as soon as they landed, he knew something was very wrong.

"AMBUSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!" cried a young captain leading the 2nd phalanx
"FORM THE LINE, PHALANX FORMATION NOW! PELTASTS FALL BACK BEHIND!!" His voice was urgent but calm, Cunobelinus knew to save his men he had to keep a cool head.

Ptolemy charged, It was wreckless, they didnt have the numbers, nor a true phalanx of their own. But to Cunobelinus' horror, he saw a regiment of his own brethren on Ptolemy's left flank. Galatian swordsmen! He bent his head down in disbelief, swallowed and ordered his peltasts to loose their javelins. Ptolemy continued his brutal charge, and by the time the lines clashed a large portion of men lay dead behind them propped up like puppets by the javelins that impaled them.

"Javelins complete sir!"
"Flank them on the left captain, I will take my cavalry 'round the right and hit the Galatians. Godspeed!"
The manouver worked perfectly, Ptolemy's flanks began to crumble but the hoplites of classic fashion held firm. The Jews were the first to break and run, and Cunobelinus broke off and charged home against them decimating them, leaving only a handful left to tell the tale. The cowardly archers had also run in fear of the heavy cavalry. Cunobelinus trotted his horses into positon behind the enemy's line. It would be the final charge.

"Steady men, we charge together. AS ONE!" Cunbelinus kicked his horse, Bedwyr and he bucked up "FORWARD!"

The hoplites were too busy fighting for their lives to see the heavy cavalry coming to their rear. Cunobelinus blew his horn at the last minute and skewered a young egyptian with his spear. The final engagement was short one, and not a soul survived it.
"It is done Cuno. You saved us." remarked Achaikos, nodding in acknowledgement.
Cunobelinus scratched his stubble. "Perhaps. But I was wreckless with the peltasts. they were butchered. only a few dozen remain, they left kypros with 77. thats unecessary casualties." He looked up at the sky... and questioned what really happend today.

Since the screenshot buggered up heres the stats:

P -425 deployed - 114 kills - 389 casualties - 36 men remaining

The Battle

"Men! They're coming out. Move up that hill, double time! It will be a tough battle, but fight on, don't give up and we will be victorious!"

https://img367.imageshack.us/img367/6571/sarpedontc1.png

Well up on the hill, Sarpedon forms a traditional successor formation: phalanxes in the middle, guards on their flanks and cavalry on the wings. Sarpedon positions himself on the left wing, expecting that that's where Ennomos will be coming.

The first contact is made when a band of Hoplitai Haploi attacks the Thureophoroi before the rest of their army has formed up, but are forced to retreat. Making no more mistakes like that, Ennomos forms up properly just outside the walls. He has fewer Makedonian-style phalanxes, but they are of superior quality, and he also has hoplites and a superior number of non-phalanx units, and thus proves a good threat to Sarpedon's lines.

"Archers!" Sarpedon orders his archers to open fire at the enemy's left flank. He hopes it will hit them from their sides, and thus bypassing their shields, in hope that it will weaken the enemy sufficiently for his right flank to hold. That's where the Thraikioi Peltastai and hoplitai units are, and the Thureophoroi will have a big fight in front of them without proper support. Ennomos were indeed coming at Sarpedon's left wing. The mercenary phalangites are going phalanx against phalanx, and the Galatians are making for the Iudaioi spearmen guarding the pantodapois' left flank.

Soon after contact is made, Sarpedon's arrows are all spent. Many had hit their mark, killing or wounding the target, but some had missed all together, and yet some had got stuck in shields or bounced off armour. Not enough had died to make Sarpedon feel his right flank secured, and indeed it was threatened, with Ennomos' second-in-command challenging Sarpedon's Prodromoi. Peltastai a nuisance. In the middle, the Pergamon phalanxes had proven their superiority, and broken through the very middle, but the left flank was holding firm. By this point, Ennomos had retreated behind his lines, so Sarpedon along with the second Prodromoi unit were helping out the Iudaioi Taxeis, who had come in a little trouble when a unit of Peltastai had joined in.

After a lot of fighting, the prodromoi on Sarpedon's right wing were finally beaten and retreated off from the field, which made it a matter of time before the whole right wing collapsed. But being busy fighting on the left wing, Sarpedon took no notice of the happenings on the other side. He had enough problems keeping the phalanxes from running, as well as keeping the Iudaioi, who fought bravely and proudly, alive. But of course the inevitable happened: the thureophoroi had had enough, and ran. After a lot of losses, so did most phalangites. It is only thanks to the archers brave attempt to delay the enemy that Sarpedon, the jews and the remaining phalanx avoided being enveloped. All seemed hopeless when the second unit of Prodromoi were beaten off the field as well.

The change came when Ennomos finally exposed himself to Sarpedon, and what was left of his bodyguards. After successfully isolating him from the rest of the troops, Sarpedon mercilessly charged home, putting everything on that last card. At this point, a big part of both armies had retreated - Sarpedon only had 11 bodyguards and 34 phalangites - but Ennomos were still alive, and he still had a numerical superiority.

https://img510.imageshack.us/img510/6342/sarpedonvsennomoskq3.png

Soon enough, though, he fell to Sarpedon's own blade. Since Ennomos' second-in-command had previously died, the chain of command was broken, and the rest of the Pergamese soldiers were thoroughly shaken - but not yet beaten. There were still phalanxes willing to fight, but since they were exhausted, and lacked proper support, Sarpedon was able to use the typical hammer-anvil tactic to rout the rest. Chasing them back into town, and taking the gates in the process, Pergamon finally surrendered to Sarpedon Syriakos. It was an important victory for him, and in the process he gained a reputation for his bravery.

Theodoros met the 1st Parthian Army under Captain Sositratos in autumn. He had to decide what to do now. If he engaged the Rebels he was ordered to attack with full force, he knew they would retreat and be out of reach. It would take time to pursue them; time the Arche didn't have. He knew the only way to make sure these scum were crushed as soon as possible was to take a risk. He left the army and took only two cavalry regiments and his bodyguards with him to attack the rebels, leaving orders with Sositratos to march for Seleukeia.

With his cavalry regiments he reached the roaming brigants and crushed them utterly. Only few survived while the allied cavalry took only minor casualties.

for now this has to suffice:

Heroic Victory
Theodoros Syriakos: about 120-130 men
Losses: about 25 I think

Enemy: more than 400 men
Losses: I think 30something were left

I recreated my losses by looking at the leftover cav... considering they were at full 44 men at the start the median cavalry lost 15 and the missile cav 5 - I think my bodyguard lost about 5 too...

"well, they've caught us." a greek captain broke the news, it was the middle of night, and Timarchos had arranged this meeting in secret so as not to disturb or un-nerve his inexperienced men.

"Dammit, there's practically no way of winning this, a plain, they have more troops and better one's than us... we are screwed"

"We could surrender, they outnumber us nearly two to one"

"Or...we could not, no, are all the captains here?" Timarchos looked around at the ten men in his room

"Yes sir, and Attalos Pergamou is umm...otherwise engaged" Attalos' second in command said, blushing and trying not to mention spicy food, or think about it too much.

"Fine, these are your orders... tomorrow, we'll assemble in battle formation, if we can beat the first army, then we should have a chance to regroup, or put some distance between us and the second."

Timarchos slept badly, he always did before battle, in the morning, he addressed all his Somatophylakes, his only full time professional troops
"I wont lie to any of you, were outnumbered, their better then our guys, and it doesn't look like we can beat them through mobility, so were all gonna die" he heard a few laughs and this strenghtened him before he carried on "So, after learning my art of war from near constant tribal conflicts and beating away rebels for the arche, I and my father, the exilied king of Pergamou, have come up with this plan for our predicament based on our extensive battlefeild experience;
We will mount our horses enthusiastically infront of these inexperienced jew's and iranians, then, we shall ride like bastards from hell and charge down anyone stupid enough to get in our way!"
An appriaciative cheer went up from the currently dismount cavalrymen

half an hour later and the army was waiting for the enemy.

https://img233.imageshack.us/img233/4708/11yh8.jpg (https://imageshack.us)

It did not go as planned, Timarchos remembered very little of the day, as he was concentrating on keeping himself from being impaled on someone's spear, however he deffinantly remembered that his centre was swallowed by the better trained and more numerour egyptian phalax, so much so, that, after 3 hours of battle, the army was in full retreat, with only the Somatophylakes left to cover the retreat, Timarchos saw Attalos charging down on the least heavily armoured enemies left on the feild as he picked another unit and slammed his guard into its flank.

https://img381.imageshack.us/img381/7084/12jb3.jpg (https://imageshack.us)
https://img381.imageshack.us/img381/12jb3.jpg/1/w1024.png (http://g.imageshack.us/img381/12jb3.jpg/1/)

He looked up, over the screams of war he saw Attalos being brought down, impaled on the spear of a Karin mercinary, he swore, looked around, saw that his army had practically nothing left, shouted to his men "Sod this for a game of soilders, retreat!"

https://img412.imageshack.us/img412/5817/13qc0.jpg (https://imageshack.us)

For about a week after the battle, Timarchos barely smiled, hardly ate, guilty that he survived when so many others, his father not least amongst them, did not.

There is still a Pontic army camped outside the city.

No image (black screen, what a dumbass)

A very strange heroic victory, they were slightly larger than me. My kills were almost the same as my army size.
However the city was cleared and I could jump in, it was probably that.... o.0

The 1st Lydian Army has relieved Timarchos Anaias Mysiakes forces besieged in Sidon.

The battle was bloody...but due to forgetting to turn off A-A no screen:

Panaitolos Ankyrikos
Men Deployed: 759
Men Killed: 448
Men Remaining: 358

Timarchos Anaias Mysiakes
Men Deployed: 704
Men Killed 252
Men Remaining: 653

VS.

Captain Melanthos
Men Deployed: 780
Men Killed: 540
Men Remaining: 79

Outcome: Clear Victory...Sidon is safe if at least for now.

They had the high ground unfortunately and rained arrows on my phalanx as it smashed shields with their own. Timarchos Mysiakes' forces suffered only minor deaths. I am proud to say my men have stuck a spear into the back of Captain Melanthos when he attempted to turn tail and run. Sadly, as my men have taken a decent beating we will march back to Antiocheia to regroup.

A letter reaches the Royal Council:

"Sidon is relieved. I attacked the army besieging our town and confronted them on an open field near the city. They were forming inside a wood, hiding like cowards which they proved to be just a short while later. I formed a battle line and since they didn't move out I started advancing slowly and sending forward our Javelin Cavalry. At this time the garrison under Timarchos entered the battle field and as soon as the Ptolemies saw them they turned and ran like little sheep. Our Javelins could only take out some of them before they got away, but at least the Town is safe for now. I moved my troops inside. They spilled no seleukid blood today.

Strategos Theodoros Syriakos"

Result: Clear Victory

The Battle of Ankyra

http://www.junsele.com/viewpic.asp?id=96643

It was a cold, rainy day in autumn of 264 BCE. Sarpedon Syriakes had, with some advice from his friend and Hetairos Mikithion Phoinikikes, planned the assault for a couple of months now while his army was building the necessary equipment to win the walls. The plan was quite simple. They would attack the city from the west with 4 rams. The Jews would storm the gates flanked by thureophoroi, and a little bit to the south, Mikithion together with the peltastai would go in and if the main party was held up at the walls, they would attack the enemy in its back.

Now the day had finally come and they were ready. The rams built and in position, and the soldiers were eagerly awaiting the signal. Though they knew that they would be restricted to breaking into Pontic homes and were strictly forbidden to harm any innocent Keltoi, the victory was sure and there were still enough spoils for them to get. After all, two from the Pontic royal family were in there, one of them being the crown heir, and that was promising enough.

http://www.junsele.com/viewpic.asp?id=96644

The Pontic soldiers stood ready at the wall, hoping to exploit the fact that the open gate and forced openings in the wall would only allow a few soldiers to enter at once. To counter this, Sarpedon ordered his archers to open fire against the Keltoi mercenaries, who were standing ready to intercept the thureophoroi to the right of the Jews.

http://www.junsele.com/viewpic.asp?id=96645

The Keltoi took a few losses, and quickly the Pontics - and not just the Keltoi - abandoned the walls while they were still intact. Turning their bare backs to the arrows, the Keltoi swordsmen took some heavy casualties, as they also had the longest way to run. Soon after that, the rams reached the walls.

http://www.junsele.com/viewpic.asp?id=96646
http://www.junsele.com/viewpic.asp?id=96647

As soon as the gate was opened, the Jews quickly rushed in while it still was undefended. The Keltoi mercenaries tried to push them back, but they were now too few and quickly routed. At the same moment, the wall was breached, and the Thureophoroi could rush in to help out, and the ones on the left flank engaged a unit of peltastai. Meanwhile Sarpedon and his phalangitai moved to enter the city themselves. Mikithion and his peltastai had had the longest way to the walls, so they were not quite finished yet, but that was now a small matter, as the Pontics did not hold the wall, which had been the reason for their distance in the first place.

http://www.junsele.com/viewpic.asp?id=96648
http://www.junsele.com/viewpic.asp?id=96649

Seeing the walls as lost, Hermaeus Laodikeios ordered all his men but his pantodapoi phalanx, himself, Mithridates Kianos and a unit of Galatikoi kluddolon to retreat to the town square. The Galatikoi he sent to intercept Mikithion and the peltastai, while he and Mithridates stayed with the phalanx. Seeing this, the Jews could safely turn and help out the thureophoroi while Sarpedon and his phalanxes could enter. The Pontic peltastai was quickly routed and consequently cut down.

As soon as the phalangites had entered inside the walls, they advanced and found the Pontic phalanx waiting at a right turn. While they turned around to meet them, the Jews and one unit of Thureophoroi - the same that had fought the peltastai - quickly rushed up a hill to secure their exposed flank towards the town centre. The phalanxes quickly met, and Sarpedon's men proved that they had learned from their experience at Pergamon, and broke the Pontic phalanx, who still fought on at the encouragement of their general, as well as their prince.

http://www.junsele.com/viewpic.asp?id=96650

The other part of Sarpedon's phalanx bravely marched on towards Mithridates and Hermaeus, who had no choice but to commit themselves to the fight and charged them. Thanks to their mobility and the sheer shock of their charge, they succeeded in putting Sarpedon's phalanx in a disarray. Being alerted by the keen eyed Cadeyrn, who always were aware of his surroundings, Sarpedon quickly answered by charging in himself, together with the thureophoroi who hadn't marched at the centre yet. However, the Galatikoi kluddolon had aborted their mission and returned when their general and their prince where fighting, also entered the fray, trying to gut the phalangites with their short swords.

http://www.junsele.com/viewpic.asp?id=96651
http://www.junsele.com/viewpic.asp?id=96652

After a long and bloody struggle, in which the Pontic heir, Mithridates, fell to an unidentified spear, the Pontic general Hermaeus fled together with what was left of his and Mithridates' bodyguards and the Galatikoi. The Pontic phalanx, bravely though they had fought, ran as well, but in the other direction. The few who managed to evade Sarpedon's phalanx were quickly shot down by the Caucasian archers.

While Sarpedon had been busy, the Jews and the thureophoroi at the town centre had engaged, and were fighting on despite being outnumbered and alone, and with the Pontics getting reinforcements with the retreating General and Galatians, things looked tough for them for a short while. Luckily though, Sarpedon had not forgotten about them, and Mikithion and the peltastai were coming as well. Rushing there double time, Sarpedon charged the backs of the Galatikoi, and then seeing Hermaeus, he quickly disengaged from them and engaged him instead.

http://www.junsele.com/viewpic.asp?id=96653

When the thureophoroi and peltastai catched up, it was game over for the Pontics. When Hermaeus was knocked off his horse by Sarpedon and then trampled by Cadeyrn's horse, the remaining force surrendered. It was a clear victory. The Pontic casualties counted up at 555 strong, which had come at a price of 141 soldiers from Sarpedon's army.

The main Pontic force directly engaged my phalanx and the Pontic cavalry tried to circle around the back and flank. The cavalry was beaten back and my own cavalry charge destroyed much of their infantry. As soon as the main force had retreated the Pontic king charged the weak side of the phalanx. He was quickly surrounded and suffered severe casualties. However, the coward soon turned tail and escaped with 3 of his bodyguards.

Sinope, Winter 264 BC

Cunobelinus stood dismounted amongst his men. They surrounded the King and his men. He'd told his men his intentions after the battle outside the walls a season earlier. They were not confident in his gamble at all. Cunobelinus walked forward 10 paces, horse in tail, sword sheathed and helmet under his arm.

"My Lord! I give you an alternative to the slaughter that awaits... You and I shall engage in single combat! Your men will be set free, and will live as free men under the Arche, regardless of the outcome, I give you my word. Your fate will be the one that is decided by the duel. If you win, you and your Queen will leave this land, and ne'er return. You shall never take arms against anyone, or lead men to battle. You will live your days as a freed man, a farmer or whatever trade you so chose, It will be up to you. If you lose... You will have fought honourably, and died honourably. You will be given a proper funeral, and you will be remembered dying honourably. Your Queen will reside here for the rest of her days as a free woman. No harm will come of her, this I swear. You have my word, from one soldier to another.... What say you, sire?"

King Ariobarzanes Kianos looked at his men... He nodded, hugged the man next to him, and rode forward and dismounted infront of Cunobelinus. He removed his helm and said, "I give you my word, son. I will leave and never return, I will never take arms against your King's Empire, For I am beaten... This I swear on my ancestors. What is your name?"
"Arrhenides Gedrosinanos Cunobelinus..."
"Cunobelinus? That is not a Greek or Persian name... You have the look of a Celt... And your armour says that..."
"I am son of Cunobelinus, Captain in the army of Brennus, he fought alongside the King of Galatia himself when they established our homeland."
The King nodded, "I wish you luck Cunobelinus..." He extended his hand and shook in agreement of the terms. The two men mounted up and rode back towards their men, all of which looked on intently. The freezing rain sent a horrid chill up Cunobelinus' spine. He looked up to the sky.

'FATHER?!' Father and son were reunited by the spirit world. 'Son, you have lived honourably... The choice you have made here has been seen by the Gods... Your fate is no longer your own. Do our people proud. Do me proud, boy.'
Cunobelinus dropped his helm, he scratched Bedwyr's mane, and Achiakos sounded the horn. The King and General charged forth, closing the distance fast. Both lances exploded on impact, knocking Cunobelinus off his horse, his head narrowly missed being trampled by Kionos' horse. The King's second pass proved fatal for his horse, as the Celtic longsword made short work of the horse's leg. Kionos was toppled off his horse, and rolled quickly dodging a blow from Cunobelinus. Blow after blow was parried and blocked, throwing sparks everywhere. This went on for well over an hour, the men showing no sign of fatigue. Each army screamed encouragement to their champion, in hopes it would thrust them to victory. The Galatian's army went quiet as the King's sword swung violently down slicing half of Cunobelinus' ear off, but his trusty mail stopped the inevitable. With his opponent's blade resting on his shoulder, he thrust forward, and knocked the King over, who rolled and again narrowly escaped death from a reckless slash by a enraged Celtic warrior. Hopping up to continue the fight, he used his armoured arm to parry another strike, and his own blade was blocked by Cunobelinus' heavy shield. Cunobelinus knocked Kionos' sword arm back giving him a wide opening, he grabbed the man's wrist with his left hand, and sliced the King's sword arm off at the elbow. In a vein last attempt, Kionos swung violently with his remaining left arm, and flipped over as Cunobelinus thrust his sword through his back. The onlookers went deathly silent.
Retreating his blade from the dying King, who was now on his back, Cunobelinus took a knee over the King.

"P..please.... f-forgive my peop........" with that the King was dead, and with him his Dynasty.

Clear victory. Since the screenshot doesn't really match up with the story, and well I found it kind of silly and dishonourable and not like Cunobelinus to overwhelm a King like that, I decided not to post it. If you really want it that bad I'll dig it up

Battle near Hierosolyma
Autumn, 263

"Enemy is approaching! They are here!" yelled one of Antiochos' scouts who galloped back to his camp.

"They arrived sooner than I thought! So, do we have a chance or not?" asked Antiochos from one of his captains.

"My Basileus, if we compare our forces then there is no way that we can lose! If You may allow then me and my men will face the Enemy on this side of the battle. We, Pezhetairoi, should do the main fighting since this is our purpose in life and leave those Pantodapoi as close support."

VS

https://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/ibnkhaldun/WotB/Battles/1battle02.jpg

About two hours later men were at their positions. Pezhetairoi were the first one to face the enemy and two units of Pantodapoi were close to give support. Thureophoroi units were behind them and ready to throw their javelins. Eastern Slinges took their position left of the bridge and they were ordered to target enemy general. Persian Archers took right side of the bridge and started to pepper the enemy with flaming arrows. This lowered the morale of enemy significantly. Asiatikoi Hippakontistai units were behind infantry lines but close enough to use their javelins against enemy troops. And then they came...

https://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/ibnkhaldun/WotB/Battles/1battle03.jpg

The first ones to attack Antiochos' Pezhetairoi were Galatian Warriors. Huge and strong men. Although their numbers were small they fought like if there would've been three or four times more of them.

https://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/ibnkhaldun/WotB/Battles/1battle04.jpg

Euergetes Ptolemaios, leader of Ptolemaioi army, sat on his horse in the middle of the bridge. Giving orders to the men approaching Antiochos' lines and encouraging those who were low on morale. Javelins, arrows and stones flew around him but he sat there without a fear as a true leader.

https://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/ibnkhaldun/WotB/Battles/1battle05.jpg

In the same time Antiochos led Nikanor Kybiosaktes, Apollonides Alindas Karikes and their bodyguards up river where a shallow pass was found couple of days ago. Waiting the right moment to cross the river and attack the enemy from back.

https://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/ibnkhaldun/WotB/Battles/1battle06.jpg

In the same time Galatian Wildmen caused havoc in the Pezhetairoi ranks. Captain who wanted his unit to be the first one to face the enemy didn't suspect that such men could attack them. The rest of the enemy was nothing compare to the damage Galatians caused. But Pezhetairoi fought as true heirs of Alexandros and Captain himself showed his skills with his sword when he engaged three Galatians at once!

Finally Antiochos' decided to cross the river and moved towards Ptolemaioi units who were too busy to notice him and his cavalry.

https://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/ibnkhaldun/WotB/Battles/1battle08.jpg

When they finally noticed Antiochos they couldn't form their battle line fast enough and Antiochos with the rest of his heavy cavalry charged through their ranks like if there was no one there!

https://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/ibnkhaldun/WotB/Battles/1battle09.jpg

Seeing Antiochos on the other side of the bridge Thureophoroi units and fresh Pezhetairoi charged remaining Ptolemaioi soldiers at their side of the bridge. Asiatikoi Hippakontistai and Prodromoi joined them as well. Soon Euergetes Ptolemaios, a worthy general, was surrounded by Antiochos' men. A man from Prodromoi unit killed Euergetes. A spear had gone through his chest.

https://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/ibnkhaldun/WotB/Battles/1battle10.jpg

After that the battle was pretty much over. Antiochos' men captured three Ptolemaioi standards.

https://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/ibnkhaldun/WotB/Battles/1battle11.jpg

Only two men from Euergetes Army managed to escape and survive.

The Assault of Byzantion

Sarpedon, Mikithion and Nikarchos were looking at the walls of Byzantion.

"Our agents are in", Sarpedon said, "and soon we'll know if they've done their job. I want to take them by surprise as soon as possible. I don't want another long and bloody siege."

"But it will cost us many men", Nikarchos interjected, "and if we take the city, we must also hold it afterwards. We might not have enough men left to do that if we take this risk."

"You haven't experienced a siege yet, Nikarchos, so you do not know what it is I'm trying to avoid. Sieges are long, they're dull, their hungry and they're a pain for every party involved - whether you are the besieger or the besieged. Men die waiting to assault, too, and while we're starving outside the walls, a second Epeirotan army may come up at us and leave us with a harder fight yet. You were with me at Ankyra, Mikithion. What do you think?"

"Both staffs have two ends - an assault is a costly endeavour, which could indeed leave us uncapable to deal with the city after it is taken... But a prolonged siege could wear us out and allow the Epeirotes to approach us with another force. In the end, it is left to you to truly pick the staff, and I shall fight alongside in a manner that best suits your choice."

At that moment, a flag was waved over the walls near the gate.

"That's the signal", Cadeyrn said. "They have taken control over the gates and will open them if we go close. What are your orders?"

"We attack."

http://www.junsele.com/viewpic.asp?id=98140

Sarpedon's forces were superior, but with only one, small opening and strong elephants, the garrison was not to be underestimated. They still posed a considerable threat.

Sarpedon led his army forward, and as soon as they were in range, the Kovkasi Lernain Netadzik and the Toxotai started firing on the elephants with fire arrows, in hopes to scare them. Akontistai and peltastai rushed forward to pepper them with javelins as well, and though the huge beasts took hits and obviously didn't like it, they were seasoned and experienced. They took the pain, shrugged it off and stayed put. Only a couple had died.

As soon as the javelins were all spent, the Galatians were ordered in. Because the garrison was taken by surprise, only a score of defenders had made it there to defend the gates.

http://www.junsele.com/viewpic.asp?id=98142

Following the Galatians are the thureophoroi, but by now the defenders have made it to the gates for real. Thraikioi Doryophoroi engage Sarpedon's thureophoroi and Galatians, while a phalanx is approaching from the south of the city. The elephants are there as well, and tries to charge the already committed thureophoroi, but wounded and frightened by the arrows and javelins, they are quickly killed without too big losses. To counter the phalanx, though, Sarpedon sends in two units of his own pantodapoi phalangitai, who effectively form up a wall of spears on the thureophoroi's southern flank.

http://www.junsele.com/viewpic.asp?id=98143

The second group of elephants shows up this time, not engaging yet, but only standing there at a distance, with the riders in the tower firing their bows at the attackers. That's a new job for Sarpedon's archers, but after many unsuccessfull volleys, the Toxotai are re-ordered to target the Thraikian levies instead, who are still holding up but are on the verge of routing. They quickly break up, which causes a chain reaction amongst the defenders. Only the phalanx remains, but it has taken many losses as well, and soon after rout as well. Chasing after them, the thureophoroi run upon a new threat: the elephants. With a ferocious charge and wild trumpets, the great beasts from India charge straight onto the awaiting Seleukid soldiers, indifferent to the stings of the javelins and the arrows. Chaos insues, and the battered Galatian levies - now only consisting of 5 young men - run for their lives. The thureophoroi takes great losses and runs too, and a phalanx is set up in hopes to at least slow them down, but to no use. In comes the peltastai and then the akontistai to help out, but with all their javelins spent, there is only so much they can do. The elephants fight on, trampling many unfortunate, sending others flying with the strong butting of their tusks, and yet others are killed by the arrows of the riders.

Sarpedon's forces are pushed back to the walls, and what's more, Sarpedon who had earlier entered and moved to the north to flank, are now standing with elephants and spearmen between him and his battered forces! He's trapped! In an attempt save himself, Sarpedon charges in, but the spearmen face him and stand firm. The horses stops flat, refusing to complete the charge, and Sarpedon is forced to retreat back again.

But all hope is not lost. Mikithion who had stayed outside to command the soldiers who had not yet entered sees the peril Sarpedon is in and orders in the Asiatikoi Hippakontistai and the Hetairoi Aspidophoroi. They still have their javelins left! As they come close to the walls, they start throwing their javelins at the elephants - and lo! The first ones start to fall. Being scared by this new threat, the elephants tries to move away - towards Sarpedon - but they are tired and can't outrun the quick, agile and rested cavalry who keeps pounding them with their missiles until they're all dead. Thus falls the Epeirotan captain Lykotas. The Epeirotans have had enough, and run back to their town square, where they are all killed off by the Klerouchoi Phalangitai and Sarpedon himself, or taken as prisoners, and later made slaves.

A scout of the 1st Syrian Army arrives with urgency to Aratos' tent.

"Strategos!" yells a bodyguard with is head between the curtains "Our scouts have arrived!"

With that Aratos stormed out to meet them. "Welcome back, what news do you bring?"

"A enemy army is marching most likely towards us, their purpose is to intercept us before the siege most certainly, as the city's garrison is moving to reinforce this army, sir."

Battle of Delta Neilou, 257 BCE
Combatants: Sarpedon Syriakos (Arche Seleukeia) vs Epiphanios (Ptolemaioi)

http://www.junsele.com/viewpic.asp?id=99519
http://www.junsele.com/viewpic.asp?id=99520
http://www.junsele.com/viewpic.asp?id=99521

It was a beautiful day. The sky was blue, the air was warm and there were lots of colourful birds singing in the palm trees. Spring had come to the delta, and with it came war.

Sarpedon went through what had happened the last few days. All the major roads had been scouted out, the provisions packed. He had marched with his great host towards the Ptolemaic army he knew was waiting for him just a click to the west.

Having a superiority in numbers, quality, experience and cavalry, the battle was decided before it started. Sarpedon knew this, his men knew this, but what's even worse, so did the enemy. It was only about negotiating the attrition, for though Sarpedon could not by any reasonable means be defeated save for the stroke of the gods, he could be injured enough to make a siege unrealistic.

Snapping back to reality, he viewed his formation. He remembered when he was still just a satrap back in Sardis, where he used to spend a lot of time in the school, studying tactics and strategy. He felt confident, and so took a deep breath and then sighed, smiling.

"It's a fine day for a battle, isn't it?" He suddenly asked Cadeyrn. A little taken by this, Cadeyrn finally stirred and answered. "Yes, sir. It's been some time, so it's good to finally be back where I belong: on a battlefield. This is where great deeds are done! This is where the spoils of war are earned!" Sarpedon did not answer. He was too occupied with all the glory of nature around him to care much for the words of mere mortals. Then finally he raised his sword and ordered the advance.

Sarpedon's formation:

http://www.junsele.com/viewpic.asp?id=99500

When his slingers and archers were in range, he ordered a complete halt and let them skirmish for a while. The Hippakontistai on his left wing, as well as his trusted Hetairoi Aspidophoroi and Peltastai right in front of him, moved forward and engaged at range as well, all the while the Ptolemaic army could do little. With little skirmishers of their own, and almost no armour at all, the Ptolemaic soldiers were in a deep pickle. If they stayed, they got whittled down by javelins, stones and arrows. If they tried a charge, the nimble horses with run away, and they'd get disorganized if they continued. Retreating from an attempted charge also cost many an Aigyptian.

When all the ammunition was spent, the Hetairoi Aspidophoroi returned and positioned themselves behind Sarpedon, Arrhenides and their bodyguards. The light cavalry on the left flank went behind Hermokrates Parthikos and the Prodromoi, while the archers and slingers sought and found shelter behind the phalanx in the middle. The Peltastai positioned themselves slightly behind the right-most spearmen on the right flank, with the intention of flanking.

http://www.junsele.com/viewpic.asp?id=99522

Without hesitation, Sarpedon ordered his army to advance - this time for melee. It would quickly be over - just lock them up in the middle, charge them down on the flanks, and then reap the rewards in their rear. Easy and tactically sound, but a tad boring. But regardless, he had a battle to win, a city to take and women to enjoy. The faster the victory here, the faster they would be his!

http://www.junsele.com/viewpic.asp?id=99523

With that thought in mind he charged ahead, leading his cavalry, closely followed by Arrhenides, crashing into the Ptolemaic left wing. As he made contact and slew his first enemy, he felt the joy of battle returning, and singing he stabbed another before the battered and scared enemy ran away. Cought up in his excitement, he forgot about the battle, and chased after them instead, still singing loudly.

It didn't take too long to chase them all down though, and when the last man was lying there, resting against a tree, stinking from sweat, blood and death, Sarpedon turned back. When he reached the lines again, he made a new charge, and the Ptolemaic native phalanx, already shaken from its losses and their precarious situation, routed instantly. As the rest of their army saw this, many paniced and ran as well, but most - including their captain, Epiphanios - opted for a tactical withdrawal. A unit of heavy spearmen was oblivious to what had happened with their friends around them though, and were left alone.

Sarpedon, knowing that if they got away, they would surely make it back to Alexandreia and reinforce the garrison there. That was not acceptable! Every one man extra they got would account as at least six of Sarpedon's men on those walls. With a daring charge he lead his cavalry against anything that stood in his way! He found himself singing again - a habit he hadn't noticed before - and it was with great regret when he finally admitted that he could chase them no further, and had to return back to his army. Even though too many than he would've liked got away, he found some solace in that the Ptolemaic captain had fallen in the reatreat.

As they rode back, he sang a song of victory, of plunder, of great jewels and of chests filled with gold. Either it was some well known lyrics that he just couldn't remember ever hearing, or he had sung it himself many times before without noticing, but his bodyguards joined in the song. So it was that when Sarpedon Syriakos, Basileus of the Seleukid kingdom, found himself once again staring at the birds, singing the song of success and he felt good. He felt himself invincible, looked from Arrhenides to Hermokrates to his horse, and he figured that life was good.

Soon he would reach the walls of Alexandreia.

Spring 256.

I engaged a small group of cutpurses and bandits in the pass into Hyrkania with a small detatchment of my army. Our horsearchers were able to overwhelm them easily with arrow fire, as they were composed mostly of landless spearmen without proper fighting spirit. The archers among them were eventually run off by the heavier cavalry, including my own bodyguard, but not before they were able to land a few lucky shots among the horsearchers.

The 1st Lydian has fought the best defense it could against a huge Epeiros Army.

After falling back to a better place of defense, General Ankyrikos had no place to run now. The 1st Lydian had to fight. Under the command of Eudamos Prochtheios, an Epirote army more than twice the size of the 1st Lydian formed up to attack.

https://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z132/mstgnymike/P-Falls/EpeirosFormsUp.jpg

Using the natural cover to break up any cavalry and blind missile units, General Ankyrikos set up a spear wall covered by his own missile units from the rear.

Finally, Selekeian and Epirote spears collided!

Panaitolos shouted command from the rear watching as his brave men attempted to hold off the massing and overpowering enemy army.

Then, Panaitolos saw Eudamos and his bodyguard riding round the 1st Lydians left flank. Panaitolos took his foe head on but, eventually, most of his bodyguard was cut down by Thracian Spearmen.

The sally of Gabai:

“Time for the fun part!” Hyllos said expectantly, his gaze focused out at the mass of Phalavan men scurrying just outside of Gabai’s walls. “Though I am disappointed, the men are hardly better equipped than children! What idiots.”
“Just mount up and lets get the men into position, I want as few dead as possible. Let this be a warning to the Persians, they can’t win against us.” Patrokles swung up into the saddle, his personal retinue bedecked in their heavy armor.
The 1st Babylonian lined up in a large line behind the abandoned siege weapons, the Archers forming a second line behind that, running out of arrows after assaulting the rebels with missiles. Still the Persian defenders held their line, though many died from the barrage.
Patrokles sighed “well, if they wont come to us then I guess we must force them to. Cataracts! Form up , aim for the enemy center!” the heavily armored horsemen charged towards the enemy line, hitting it and bending it in before withdrawing back behind their own lines
https://img164.imageshack.us/img164/6113/luringthescum.jpg

The Persians ran after the fleeing horsemen, their commander and mounted men hitting the line before any of the other troops were near, BIG mistake, they were butchered by the Seleucid Phalangtites. Their commander was killed in the furious fighting, and the horsemen flung back.
https://img164.imageshack.us/img164/3152/hooklineandsinker.jpg
Arrows whistled in on the Seleucids and Patrokles cursed “where the hell did those archers come from!, come on boys were taking them out!” he charged the Persian archers, His lance crushing through the unarmored men, his sword arm pumped crushing the enemy soldiers. Hyllos stood at his side, parrying blows and slashing any men that came to close. The archers ran, hurling aside their companions to run from the cataracts.
https://img164.imageshack.us/img164/9567/takingoutsupport.jpg
Some of the more disciplined Persians tried to flank the Seleucid line, but were repulsed by a charge from Epikrates Tabaiou Persikou sent them running, and men all along the Persian line fell back in disarray.
https://img164.imageshack.us/img164/9721/startingtheroute.jpg (it doesn’t look like it, but most of those units are routing)
Patrokles smiled “they are on the ropes, Time to end this. Charge!!!” the cavalry charged the Persians, and they fell back in disarray running to the town gates.

Two clear victories and one Ptolemaic family member killed... not a bad job for Hierax's first military engagement.

(unfortunately, I forgot to screenshoot the outcome of the first battle, but here's what it was like)

First battle:
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v238/Thunder_wulf_X/Europa%20Barbarorum/BattleforPetra1.jpg

The outcome was: Clear Victory for our side.
Hierax Syriakos- Men Deployed: 1563, Men Remaining: 1506. A few brave men died, but it was not in vain, for the Ptolemaic Strategos Paramonos Philopator was killed, slain by Hierax himself.
Captain Xenophon- Men Deployed: 647, Men Remaining: 6
Captain Theagenes- Men Deployed: 105, Men Remaining: 0
Paramonos Philopator- Men Deployed: 358, Men Remaining: 105.

Second Battle:

Again, Clear Victory for Hierax:

The Fall of Petra

The new day dawns upon Hierax's third battle. This time, however, he is more than confident that victory will be his. The only question is how glorious it will be. He dons his ornate helmet, shoulders his shield and raising his sword high, orders the troops to assemble and meet the charging Ptolemaic armies.

He outnumbers his foe, which is always a good thing, but numbers alone confer no advantage. With cunning use of his fine cavalry, himself charging the enemy lines where fighting was fiercest, and with the experienced Caucasian archers and, of course, the finest soldiers in all the civilised world, the king's Argyraspides, Hierax routs the entire enemy army, slaughtering every last one.

Victorious, he follows the last of the routing enemy to the gates of Petra itself. The city is his.

The death of Persia:
The Persians lined the wide open roads of the village of Karmana. they has ran, and ran, and ran from the Seleucids but now their was no where to run to. They stood shoulder to should, side by side in their last and finest hour.
The battle raged for five hours, but eventually even the Persians determination could not stand up against the overwhelming numbers of the Babylonians. The Persians did not, could not flee, and died where they stood, the last of their kind. The last Persians...... men who died for they’re beliefs, no matter how flawed they were. This account is not here to say that the Persians were right, only to say that they deserved respect.
Patrokles looked up from his writing, staring out over the carrion soaked town of Karmana, and sighed. he watched as the town folks were brought from their homes and was surprised to see such a tiny crowd, where was everyone else? he thought. he walked over to a officer
"are your men not through rounding up the town folk yet?"
".... sir, this is all the town folk."
"what..... where is everyone else?" he looked over to one of the children and asked again "boy, where is all the other people of your village?"
The boy cocked his head and pointed to the huge funeral pyres burning just outside of town "they are all there sir." he said matter a factly.
Patrokles shoulders lowered and he walked back to his tent, taking back up his journal and scratching in a few more lines.
….. When I set out on this campaign I expected everything to be simple, I tries to assume that we were right and the Persians were wrong….. Perhaps life isn’t that simple. I have seen a village die for its beliefs, and yet I don’t know whether to cry or laugh.

Summer 249 BC Inside the Gate of Memphis
"MEN!" Cunobelinus rode his horse up and down the ranks of the men, in Open-Order, He was a hands on leader, Led by example, every man who'd ever fought under him knew this, and knew his face. They would always know him. "There lies hardly an attacking force outside these walls. All your commitment is not needed! These fools could die by my own hand alone! BUT! It would be poor manners to let you men watch and not get a stab at this battle. I grow weary of these fools outside our walls... Masquerading as an army, when they are just a bunch of thugs and thieves raiding honest merchants and farmers. Let's kick this schoolyard bullies in the teeth, shall we?!!" "HAAAAAAAAAROOOOOOOOOOOO!" Came the reply
Cunobelinus nodded to the gatesmen. He turned round and pointed his sword at the 2 Phalanx's"CLOSE ORDER! MARCH! 4 COLUMNS! DEPLOY OUTSIDE THE WALLS IN STANDARD FORMATION!" He spurred his horse on and out of the gates, the rest of his cavalry trailing behind, trying to keep up. He pushed left forcing the Ptolemies to wheel to their right, exposing their left flank. Not noticing the Phalanx deploying to the right. By the time they reacted the Phalanx was in position, spears couched and they were marching forward. The Horn blew and The Cavalry charged forward, gutting the entire couple of ranks in the front, they pulled back and repeated this charge 3 times till the Phalanx was in range. Now Cunobelinus and his men were caught in the melee, but there was no need for alarm, his men were Experts, They'd fought from Lydia to Alexandria, this rabble of men were no match... "Achaikos! Link up with the Right Flank and get them to flank around and we'll squish them with out Cavalry!" The Phalanx did well, pushing the enemy into an L shape. Not 20 minutes later they broke and fled, but the cavalry caught up with the majority and butchered them.
"Casualties?"
"Minimum... less than 150 men... Which is good because we've killed about 500-600 of them!"
"Good work... We'll have to have a celebration of some kind! Send word to Aratos in Alexandriea! I want he and his family to dine in our Halls!"
"Of course, sir! We'll send a messenger right away!"

The Battle for Memphis

http://screenshot.xfire.com/screenshot/large/731588ccf0bdbdafbb4956e822c500a0fe752511.jpg

"BROTHERS! Today we stand on the gates of oblivion! The fate of The Satrapy could be in our hands! The fate of our families and our friends are in our hands! Our King sends us no aid! Though be not disheartened by this! He has not knowingly signed away our lives! He knows we do not need his help today! We are men enough!!! The foolish Egyptian King sends his heir, too cowardly to fight me himself... Is he afraid of the same fate as the Pontic King? He has sealed his heir's fate! Whoever fells him will join my personal guard and entourage... And we shall have a night on the town with the finest whores!!"

As usual Cunobelinus rode right up front, first out the gates. Phalanx deployed infront, Pantodapoi on the left flank, Akonistai in the rear and himself on the right. Once the Phalanx engaged Onasas Larnakios' spearmen, Cunobelinus rode round the right and goded the foolish prince. He followed. Right back around the flanks and to the rear of our Phalanx. Cunobelinus signalled the trap and the Akonistai rushed towards him, his cavalry going through the gaps, leading the Prince into them. Now fixed, the Prince was flanked by our General and he charged the rear. On the horn was the signal for the Pantodapoi to flank around the left and engage the phalanx from the rear.

Hacking his way through the Prince's guard Cunobelinus found the Akonistai Captain.
"CAPTAIN! GATHER WHAT MEN YOU CAN AND FLANK AROUND THE LEFT AND HELP OUR SPEARMEN IN THE REAR! GOO!"
"SIR!"
Giving his unit's withdraw call the majority of the Akonistai fell out and regrouped 40 metres or so away. Cunobelinus' men kept the Prince's Guard busy, while the flank happened.

"Dheartháir! The Prince is over there!" Cried Achaikos.
Cunobelinus followed Achaikos towards the Royal Egyptian. Achaikos crossed blades with him, slid them round in a upwards circliar motion, and with that chopped the man's head clean off.

Shortly after the rout began, we pursued them for several hundred metres. But then abandoned it once we'd killed the majority... We'd won... If it had not been for Cunobelinus' daring trick we'd have surly lost.
"Initial Casualty report!"
"200 men sir... We've butchered at least 2000 of them... This is an act of the Gods sir!"
"Maybe... Lets get drunk shall we?"

OOC : This is actually how the battle happened. I swooped my cavalry around since i numbered 31 at the start of the battle and his cavalry numbered about 40 or so, so they came after me, i went back behind my lines, and engaged them while the skirmishers set up, then charged them forward, and withdrew my cavalry through them, back around and sandwiched the prince behind our line. Their Phalanx then moved forward into our line, and that pretty much gutted their front line soldiers between both our spears. Then my pantodapoi moved round with the akonistai and we finished them off with a coup-de-grace. Once their general fell they took off.

The 1st Syrian has assaulted the Ptolemaic town of Pselkis. The enemy were completely destroyed and the population expelled. The enemy general died upon our mighty phalanx during a desperate charge.

I was 90% sure I took a screenshot of the result, but I don't think it worked. It was a Clear Victory.

Cunobelinus marched to Alexandreia. He called the army to parade, and spoke to them. "Men! When war comes we do not have a choice. We fight. We fight for our reasons that are our own, be it for glory, or self-defence. But you fight. Today is different. I come to this army with a proposition! This time you will have a choice. Be a man, or be a coward! Your general, my close friend and brother is indisposed. He is unable to lead you against the remaining ptolemaic forces. But I have come to do such a thing. I do not expect your unwavering support. You've never fought under me, so I can understand this. However you must have heard of me. And that alone should give you confidence. What loot you find is yours! If you find none, I will personally see to it you are compensated for your hard work. Any man that does not wish to finish off the enemy go back to your barracks. We do not need you...Several of the elite units and phalanxes fell out of formation and marched to the barracks. The rest of you! We will march tomorrow. When you fall out, go to your captain, and make sure you sign up. Thankyou... God speed!"

The core of the 1st Syrian marched through the desert to the town of Hibis. Thanks to clever maneuvering on the part of Alexandros, the garrison was lured out to fight in a pitched battle. Unfortunately, once their defeat was assured some managed to escape back to the town. But a victory has been won, and now the town is under siege.

In the Western Desert

"Well... There they are... Waiting. You going to go take a look?!"

"WE'RE WITH YOU CUNOBELINUS!!!!!" sounded the army.

Cunobelinus was renewed with a feeling of power and invincibility. He ordered his army to form up outside. The sound of horns, thundering feet and hooves, and the sweat from the heat stirred memories in his mind. He wiped the dripping sweat off his forehead, and fixed his turban. He'd not worn one since just after Jerusalem. He liked it. He'd worn it well into the war with Pontus, but by the time he took Sinope (and his hero's epic of a duel with the King) he'd retired it to his backpack. This was one of the unsual things about Cunobelinus. He was not like other generals, and especially not like other governors of the Arche. He never had a large baggage train, he felt it was demanding and a disadvantage. Rations were all that were carried with the army. Personal items, his included were strictly regulated to only what you could carry. Dispite his wealth he always kept the straight and narrow, and never spent more than he needed. Frugal and a Luddite he preferred the simple to the complex. This was his advantage in war. He would need this for the coming fight. The army was led by a now more than capable Pharaoh.

The Phalanx lined up... The Hypastai that followed him illegally formed up on the left, the Thorikai on the right. Cunobelinus lead the cavalry out and gutted the ptolemaic skirmishers, and withdrew to behind his line. They then marched forward and met the Ptolmaic Phalanx. He flanked with his spearmen, whom were held totally on the left by the Hypastai. But the right side faltered a little, and Cunobelinus sensed the possibility of a collapse, He rushed around and threw himself into the fray. Blood was everywhere, He cut down man after man, pushing his way through the battle, the right flank had gone from defined lines, to an unruly deathmatch, it was everyman for himself, and even Cunobelinus became separated.

"TO THE GENERAL" Achiakos cried, but in vain, the Celtic cavalrymen were occupied with the battle and were now useless to make any sort of manoeuvre. Achiakos went himself, but took a javlin to the chest. He was thrown from his horse in a violent manner and nearly killed by another blow from a club to the head. Cunobelinus was there in short manner, running short circles around Achiakos, He blew his horn and the other Celts moved in like wolves for the kill, cutting their way through the thick of the battle.

Another horn blew and Cunobelinus didnt recognize it. Instinctually he turned around looking for a thundering cavalry charge, but all he could see was man, horse, and dust meeting in a exuberant clash of metal, wood, and blood. He gulped and then was hit by what felt like a boulder smashing into his gut. It was a lance! His mail was defeated but the muscle plate under it was still good. but now he was on the ground. He coughed up what he assumed to be blood, and removed the cloth covering his face. It draped down on his shoulder as he got up. He was dazed, his horse was still alive, and he was stamping on the heads of those trying to subdue him. Cunobelinus chuckled inside, but that chuckle turned to despair when he turned and saw his best friend lying on the ground, not moving. His head turned to hatred, and he pushed his friend's memory out of his head. He picked up his sword and smashed an Ethiopian's head in with his shield. His face was now covered in blood and bits of brain, he now turned his attention to a dismounted cavalryman, grabbed his sword arm and bit his ear off, and cut into his leg. He spat the detatched ear his next target. It hit the boy in the face and he shuddered, he tried to raise his axe to defend, but it was already too late, Cunobelinus' sword was already on its way to his neck.

Cunobelinus cut a path towards his horse, and remounted he looked back at his friend, and then out infront, and caught a glimpse of the Pharaoh, whom sounded a rally horn for his bodyguard.
"FUCKING COWARD! HE'S RUNNING AWAY AND THE BATTLE ISN'T EVEN WON OR LOST!
Cunobelinus looked back at his friend, then back at the King.. He was torn, Follow the enemy? or help my dead friend... He looked back at his still friend, and then once more back at the King, and back at his friend... Achiakos twitched. That was enough to convince Cunobelinus, he rode straight for Achiakos, cutting another path back where he came from. He jumped off his horse, and stood his ground cutting down any foe who challenged him. It stayed this way till the end.

There was no resounding victory call when he won... There was nothing to even tell Cunbobelinus the fighting stopped. When all he could see was friends he turned around and tended to his friend. The javlin had penetrated his armour but thankfully it slowed it and it had not done fatal damage to him. Cunobelinus gave him some water. It was like this all down the line. Not one man was gleeful, They all wandered around or tended to a dead or dying friend... Most were wounded or scarred emotionally at the least. The Hypasts were particularly angry. They came for glory, and every battle they'd fought was one of survival, not heroics and plunder. Cunobelinus was convinced they'd leave, if not the whole army. He considered turning around. Was the desert really worth it... Why was he here? He began to think he'd tricked himself, instead of looking for security to his city and friends, was he here for his own gains? He put that thought out of his mind, and picked up his friend, putting him face up on his horse and walked him back to the camp. He looked out to where he saw the King run to. He'd follow him... if it took him to the gates of Hercules, he'd follow him. He just hoped he had enough manpower to do so... Maybe it was time to send an appeal to the council for aid...

At the edge of a cliff. Their backs to the edge... The thundering of a marching army grows louder and louder with each passing moment. The grizzled General trots up and down the line with his friend Achiakos. He comes upon the guard of the Basileus.

"I appreciate your sacrifice. What you've done has put us both in the line of fire... But you all know that sometimes, you've got to break the rules to get things done. If we survive this, You all have a place to stay at my governor house at Memphis whenever you need it."

The captain walked up to Cunobelinus' horse
"General, I would march with you to the end of the Earth. You are the finest commander I've ever fought under. It is a shame we will part ways soon. I hope that Sarpedon does not blame you for the choice of me and my men... Stay strong, sir. We're with you all the way."

Cunobelinus gave the man a nod, and with that, Cunobelinus piped up for another speech

"SURVIVAL! THAT'S YOUR WATCH WORD TODAY! KNOW IT WELL! WE'VE GOT ONE CHANCE, ONE CHANCE ALONE! WE'RE OUT NUMBERED, BUT NOT OUT MANNED. WE'VE BROUGHT MORE SOLDIERS THEN THEY DID!"

"RABOOO!" The call from the various Celts over powered any other people's call...

The battle took ages, It was bloody and long. But Cunobelinus' Line held well. Eventually a falter apeared in the centre of the Ptolemaic line.
"HYPASTS! YOU ARE UP! GET THROUGH THERE! MAKE A HOLE FOR ME!"
"HELL YES!"
They churned through the weakened section like an Old English longbow through a French Nobleman. Cunobelinus sounded the horn and charged through the gap. The Ptolemaic King and heir charged forth surrounding the General. This time Achiakos and Cunobelinus did not get separated. Watching eachothers back then cut through the bodyguards of the Ptolemaic dynasty easily. Spotting the exquisite armour of a King, instinctually Cunobelinus make a B line for him. They never crossed blades. Cunobelinus smashed his shield into the face of the King, and he was killed instantly. Achiakos trailing close behind saved Cunobelinus from a lucky cavalryman making a swing at his back. Trailing left in the thick of the engagement the Heir spotted Cunobelinus, and made his way towards them. Their bout lasted a good 30 minutes.
I know him... Cadyren!!! I knew it was you.. So you had a son after all... hmmm I wish this was different. So much we have do discuss boy... Had only Cadyren stayed inside Galatia...
The final pass proved to be epic. Sparks exploded from the blades as the Galatian boy tried to kick Cunobelinus off his horse. Cunobelinus slid his blade down to the hilt of the boy's sword and spun it out of his hand, then sliced open the back of the boy's neck. He fell off his horse into a heap. consumed by the dust, sand and blood. Eventually the Cavalry were defeated and Cunobelinus lead countless charges upon the rear of the Ptolemaic line. Brutally butchering their Phalanx. In the end the dead of Ptolemy could have piled higher then the lighthouse at Alexandriea.

"RABOOOOO!"

That roughly translates to my lack of experience with phalanx armies, a heavily forested map and use of general cam led to a slightly disappointing showing. Sorry for losing so many men.

End of Summer, 244 BC. On the road to Antiocheia-Margiane, the filthy Dahae thought they would rob good Greek and Persian men...they were terminally mistaken. The men gave good account of themselves, though the Shivatir and Nizagan-i-Eranshahr suffered extensive casualties. The Shivatir were caught in a wooded patch and forced into melee, while the Nizagan bravely charged some Peltastai to protect my Thanvare Payahdag and were forced to wait for the Prodromoi to finish off some dangerous Kataphraktoi Hippeis. In barbaroi, they are called Azat-Asavaran or some such garble. Why haven't we armored our cavalry like this? We could cause mighty damage amongst our enemies if we did so.

Not quite a bad idea though, it would help our horsemen to weather the ungodly arrow storms these thieves like to precede their battles with.
