GENERAL OVERVIEW

What is Ran no Jidai ?

Ran no Jidai (Times of Chaos) is a total conversion project for Rome Total War – Barbarian Invasion that tries to go back to Total War series origin : Shogun total War.

What are your main goals ?

To convert the original game in an entertaining, historically accurate re-enactment of the Sengoku Jidai, the Japanese Age of Warring States.

Why Ran no Jidai (Times of Chaos) ?

Because it sounds good and accurate to the general turmoil of the Era. And because naming it “Shogun 2” was forbidden by CA.

What's the starting/ending date of the game ?

The starting date is 1524 and the ending is set in 1615. The game is set on a 4-turns-per-year script.

How many factions will be playable ?

20 clans fully playable, added to unplayable local minor clans. HERE are the playable factions. (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?p=600022#post600022)

How many provinces does the map held ?

There is currently 86 provinces ingame. HERE are some in-game images of the map. (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?p=3659403#post3659403)

How far do you go in terms of historical accuracy ?

We translate our informations directly from Japanese historical online databases, or from Sengoku Era specialists to keep the highest possible level of accuracy combined with a good gameplay. This accuracy is highly regarded by the members, as samurais are a common source of misconceptions.

How does contacts with westerners will be displayed ingame ?

Once contacts established with an european ship and trade conditions accepted, Missionaries will start preaching in the player’s provinces, building churchs, converting population… The converted Lords will receive bonus from European trade (muskets,…) but will encounter the anger of local Buddhists sects…

How many religions will be ingame ?

Three. Christianity, and two different kinds of Buddhists sects. Shinto was a core part of japanese life since so long that it is useless to have it as an own religion. Buddhism was much more recent in Japan, and it’s different sects were sometimes at war against each others…

Will each clan have its own units ?

During the Sengoku Era, Japan was already united culturally, militarily and technologically since long, so there is no reason for factions to have different rosters. But some regions will have their own unique units, and Clans who deals with the Europeans will have a kind of boni as well… HERE are some images of the units. (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?p=2241386#post2241386)

When will it be released ?

When it will be ready. Converting the whole game to a different timeframe, a different culture and a different gameplay takes a lot of time. Stay tuned for the official release...

Why is it taking so long ?

We are not a professional company. We work for free, when we want, when we can. We all have families, relatives, jobs, and our lives does not belong to the mod. Patience is a virtue highly valued among us.

Do you plan to have it translated to another language ?

Currently, there is no other version planned than English.

Do you plan to have it released on the M2TW engine ?

There is no other version planned than the RTW-BI. We prefer to focus on finishing it first before planning anything else.

Do you plan to have provincial campaigns focusing on famous Daimyos like Nobunaga, Hideyoshi,… ?

If the feedback from players is good, and if we have enough hands to work on it, we could think about a “Provincial Campaign” centered around Nobunaga’s ambition.

VARIOUS

How come that Clan XXX is not ingame ?

There was two major factors for choosing clans : Importance of these clans in Sengoku Era, and their hometowns on the map, to have the whole map covered, and not only Honshū Island.

Where is Hokkaidō ?

As Hokkaidō island didn’t play any role in the Sengoku Era, it wasn’t included ingame.

Why didn’t you included Korea to play the Imjin War ?

Including Korean peninsula caused CTD, as the Land/Sea ratio was too unbalanced to be correctly supported by the game.

I can't see famous Generals like Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, etc ? Where are they ?

As the game start in 1524, most of the well know characters of the Sengoku Era were either not yet born, or small infants at that time… But you’ll have direct controls of their fathers as well as of their full family and major retainers from that time…

Where are Kensaï, Battlefield ninjas,… ?

As we head for historical accuracy, units like these ones have no place ingame… A single samurai holding a bridge wouldn’t have lasted long in battle, nor does black pajamas guys would have… The only exception we made was for No-dachi units. Although these never fought in full, compact units, we allowed them ingame to have a full assault based unit.

REQUIREMENTS

What does I need to play your mod ?

You need a fresh installation of both Rome Total War and it's expansion, Barbarian Invasion.

My computer hardly run RTW-BI, will I be able to play Ran no Jidai ?

Probably not. Our textures are twice the size and our 3D models are much more detailed than the vanilla ones, so a computer running closer to the best requirements would work better on it.

Hummm, there are less of 100 year... aprox 350 - 400 turns, would be enough the total conquest of Japan to complete ?

I've been waiting for this for a long time, and all I can say is that I can't wait to play it!

I personally like the sound of Sengoku Jidai more than Ran no Jidai but hey, as long as the gameplay is good I won't complain.
