Overview

Amazon Total War is a partial conversion for Rome Total war version 1.5 or Barbarian Invasion version 1.6. There are separate versions of the game for each executable. It uses the mod:switch option, so it will not interfere with any of your original game files. Be sure you apply it to a clean install of RTW, as you may experience ctd's when entering battles if not.

ATW adds three new Amazon factions to the game: Amazonia, the Valkyrja, and the Gorgons. These belong to a new culture, that of the Amazons, with new units, generals, retinue members, and traits just for them. My inspiration for this was the Amazons of legend, and I have tried to keep everything in the mod in the spirit of those legends. So just as legend has it, the Amazons are outstanding archers and horsewomen. They also fight in the standard greek hoplite style, as well as having some troops using the sagaris, an axe that was a signature weapon of the Amazons (and where calling a woman an "old battle-axe" comes from). As the Amazons were not known to be sailors of any repute since the fall of the Libyan Amazons a thousand years before the mod is set, I have limited them to recruiting biremes and triremes.

As the Amazons were reputed to be the progenitors of the Sarmatian people, I have also created a new Sarmatian faction, occupying their ancestral homelands between the Don and Volga rivers. I have tried to emulate their close ties by making Amazonia and Scythia begin the game as Allies. While the Valkyrja and the Sarmatians begin as allies as well. I have also made Sarmatian mercenaries recruitable in Amazonia, as well as Amazon mercs recruitable across the steppes.

While all Generals are female, the spies, assassins, and diplomats remain male by design. These men would be specially recruited from the Amazons courtesan class of men, or from men in foreign lands. The reason being that in the world outside of Amazonia men can move far more easily through society than women can. Due to the constraints of the game's hard coding, they will all have female names however.

But Amazons and are not all that is different in ATW. The original game map has been modified by the inclusion of 34 new territories. Most of them are located in North Africa, the Steppe, and the mountains of Armenia. Scythia has been moved to its more historically accurate starting position in the Crimea and lower Ukraine. It has also undergone a large change in its unit roster, now having many more infantry units of better quality than before. This reflects the effects of their having become partially sedentary at the time the game begins.

Every Barbarian faction now has a 4th tier of development. There are many new units, including Onagers for all Barbarians. Maiden Axes have been added to Britannia and Gaul. Chosen Slingers added to Britannia, Carthage, and Iberia. Dacia and Thrace now have Chosen Falxmen. Gaul and Germania have regular Archer Warbands. Mercenary Cretan Archers and Rhodian Slingers are now recruitable by the Hellenic factions from their home islands. Scutarii are now recruitable by Carthage. Elephants and Noble Cavalry have been added to Numidia, Noble Cavalry to Iberian, and Heavy Cavalry have been added to the Greek Cities.

In addition I have tweaked the stats of many units, such as increasing the range and damage of all Slingers, reducing the attack of Warhounds, and increasing the attack and defense of Iberian Infantry and Equites, and increased the defense of Naked Fanatics. Many factions have had their unit recruitment trees altered, with most temple units now being recruitable from a regular barracks instead.

The game's corruption triggers have been changed so as not to kick in until your treasury reaches 100,000 and 150,000 denarii respectively. So you do not have to worry as much about making too much money.

Every faction has a Legendary Artifact associated with it. Each is unique, and had can only be possessed by a member of its parent faction. These artifacts are represented in the game as retinue members, and give their holders very significant bonuses. If lost through character death there is a random chance they will reappear later in the game.

As this is an early release there is still work to be done. The general portraits are also only placeholders. Permanent ones will come in a future release. I have disabled the pre-battle speeches of the Amazons, and will also create new ones in a later release, and possibly add strategic map sound effects for Amazon units.

Installation Instructions

Unzip the file you download to your base Rome Total War folder (i.e. the one with RomeTW.exe in it). When you are done you should see the folder "amazon" alongside your data, logs, Miles, preferences, saves, and other folders. Like so:

RTW
:-amazon
:-bi
:-custom
:-data
:-logs
:-Miles
:-preferences

Now create a new shortcut for Amazon Total War.

For more information on editing the Command Line of Rome Total War look here (http://rtw.heavengames.com/rtw/mods/tutorials/command_line/index.shtml).

If you have downloaded the RTW version, then go to your RomeTW.exe file and right-click on it.

If you have downloaded the Barbarian Invasion version, then go to your RomeTW-BI.exe file and right click on it.

An options box will pop up.

Move your mouse down to "Send To". Another box will pop up along side the first one.

Move your mouse over to "Desktop (Create Shortcut)", and click on it with your left mouse button.

Now go to your Desktop and you will see the new shortcut there, named "Shortcut to RomeTW.exe"

Right-click on the new shortcut, and a box will pop up.

Click on Properties in this box.

A new window will open up, with three tabs across the top. If the Shortcut tab was not already selected, click on it.

Click in very right end of the box named Target.

Now add in a space and then the following text: -mod:amazon -show_err

So your Target box should look something like: "C:\Program Files\Rome Total War\RomeTW.exe" -mod:amazon -show_err

Now click on Apply.

To rename it something more descriptive click on the General tab.

There will be a field at the very top of the window. Type in: Amazon Total War.

Now click on Ok. You are done.

Optional: I have included several desktop shortcuts which you may wish to use. While you still have the Shortcut Properties window open, click on the Shortcut tab, then click on the Change Icon button at the bottom of that window. A Change Icon window will appear. Click on the browse button to navigate to your RTW\amazon folder. You will find several.ico files there. Select the you would like by double-clicking on it. Then back at the Change Icon window click on Ok. Then finally click on OK again to close the Shortcut Properties window.

An intersesting idea for a mod, well done on its completion. You should probably post this on the twcenter as well, could you show a screenshot of the new faction loactions? Also which factions did you remove?

I'm guessing the Roman houses..

An interesting-looking mod-- I've always wanted to play a Greek faction in the steppes, and women too! Shall install this as soon as I get a clean copy of RTW on my harddrive-- my current game files have been tweaked with quite a bit.

Thank you. I have spent a year and a half working on this. So far it has only been on RTWH, I may get out to TWC later too. But I am a one girl band so it is hard for me to keep up with multiple sites while I continue to slave away on the mod.

I never thought of creating a map of all the faction locations in it. That is an excellent idea. I will get cracking on that. I suppose I could either take map_regions and re-colour the areas, or find a way to condense all of the preview maps in the campaign folder. Map regions would probably be easiest.

I actually started with removing Pontus and replacing it with Amazonia, as Pontus was in exactly the same position I wanted Amazonia to be. Then as I became more ambitious I reduced Rome to a single faction (everyone does), and use the brutii, scipii, and julii slots for the Sarmatians, New Amazonians, and Gorgons respectively. I had not planned on creating the latter three factions to begin with. But the mod just took on a life of its own, and there they are.

You will need that clean copy. ATW has been known to cause CTDs when entering battles if not on a clean copy. Not for everybody, just some people. Putting ATW on a clean install of the game resolves this issue (I am still not exactly sure what is causing it, I just know this fixes it).

I will get that faction map together, and I plan to post a faction previews of the Gorgons and Amazonians, and probably a big one of the Barbarians as they have quite a few changes. Scythia and Sarmatia would be good choices for their own previews as well, same with Thrace. The Greek Cities too, they have many new units and some new cities. *phew*It is a lot of work coming to a new site and trying to show everything.

Here's some more Amazons for you to consider if you need more units.

Faction Preview - The Gorgons

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/gorgon_symbol-1.png

The Gorgons are the third and final Amazon faction. Very different from Amazonia and New Amazonia, the Gorgons have spent the last thousand years in the desert. This has caused them to shift from the strong hoplite and chariot base that the other Amazons possess, and instead are based on skirmishing, maneuver, and sudden, devastating charges. A desert faction, they incorporate camels and elephants into their ranks, and all of their units receive bonuses when fighting in the sand.

In the RTW version they begin with the settlements of Dimmidi and Theneste, and are poised to sweep north through North Africa. Before them awaits their former home of Triton, now in the hands of their hated Greek enemies. In the BI version they instead begin as a horde, making them the terror of North Africa.

Thousands of years ago the Amazon tribe of the Tritoni lived upon the sacred island of Hesperides, which lays off the Libyan coast. However, an earthquake destroyed their city and forced them to flee to the mainland. There they encountered another Amazon tribe known as the Gorgons. The two initially clashed, but soon they put aside their differences and united with a third Amazon tribe called the Pallantids, forming a single nation. Even their religions integrated, with their new pantheon of deities including Medusa of the Gorgons, Sipylene of the Tritoni, and Athena of the Pallantids. They settled upon the shores of Lake Tritonis and built the great city of Triton to be their capital.

Under the rulership of the legendary Queen Myrine the Great, the Gorgons expanded eastward along the coast of Africa, up through Phoenicia, and finally conquered Asia Minor. However, far too over-extended to hold this vast tract of land, they were forced to gradually withdraw from most of their new-won territory after the death of Myrine. Only on the Thermodon plain in northern Asia Minor did they retain the colony of Themiskyra, ringed by fortresses to protect it from the encroachments of the nearby Greeks.

It was those Greeks who spelled the doom of the Libyan Amazons. Brought into direct contact by the conquests of Myrine, the Greeks and Amazons were natural enemies. They competed for trade, political influence, and most especially were from totally antithetical cultures. The Greeks supported rebellions in the areas conquered by the Amazons, and after they withdrew enlisted their populations in anti-Amazon alliances.

For centuries the conflict went on, until finally the Gorgons were driven back to their city of Triton. There an allied-Greek army led by the Athenians laid siege. Unable to storm the impregnable walls of the great city, the Greeks settled into a blockade to starve out the Amazons. After long months the end of Triton came suddenly. The exact cause of her demise remains shrouded in mystery to this day. Some say that a priestess of Athena murdered the Amazon Queen and let the Greeks into the city. A theory lent support by the fact that afterward the Athenians brought the worship of Athena back to their city (and indeed renamed it to Athens after her). In any case, the Greeks entered the city and in an orgy of blood lasting for three days they slew every living thing. Not even the livestock were spared.

Yet some of the Amazons managed to escape across Lake Tritonis with their men and children. This rag-tag band took advantage of the Greek preoccupation with the slaughter of Triton and fled south into the desert, hoping that even the blood-mad Greeks would not dare to pursue them into the trackless wastes. Many died in the terrible exodus. Dark rumours still circulate that in order to survive, the living were forced to drink the blood of the dead and eat of their flesh.

In time the remnants of the once proud Libyan Amazons came to a place of refuge in a mountain range far from their former home. Here they found shelter from the sun in the caves, and hidden sources of water deep within the earth. They learned to adapt to their desert surroundings and bided their time, knowing that one day vengeance would be theirs.

That was over a thousand years ago. Now even the Greeks barely remember the details of their destruction of Triton and the mighty Amazon nation there, and even that only as fragments of myth and legend. But the Gorgons have not forgotten. They have spent the years sharpening their arrows and axes, and forging their very bodies into weapons of retribution. When a star fell to earth north of their mountains they knew their time had come. It was Medusa pointing the way back to their ancient home, and their ancient enemy.

So the Gorgons stirred themselves and made the long trek back across the unforgiving desert. They now stand poised at the edge of the wastes, with the fertile Tritonian plain beyond. They have come to reclaim their ancestral home, and to end the world of men...

Desert skirmishers are the youngest and quickest men in the Amazon military. These men are used to break up enemy units with a shower of javelins as the battle lines close on each other, then run away before an enemy can come to grips with them. They cannot be expected to fight well in a melee. They are generally similar to the peltasts of other nations: light infantry who carry javelins, a knife, and small shields (usually fashioned from hardened ostrich hide). Other than a leather cap they wear no armour.

They are mobile enough to stay out of trouble but are, as is so often the case with skirmishers, vulnerable when caught on open ground. They are best used in broken and wooded terrain, where they can hide and ambush enemy formations before the main battle is joined.

Gorgon Archers
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_gorgon17.jpg (https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/gorgon17.jpg)
These women are foot archers of the Gorgons, the long rage killing power of their armies. They are armed with the powerful composite bow of the Amazon people. Yet being lightly armored they are vulnerable in melee combat, especially to enemy cavalry.

Unlike other civilized cultures, the Amazons prize archers above all other warriours. While most of these women came from the lower classes, many gain higher standing by distinguishing themselves in battle. As young girls they would have spent long hours every day practicing with their bows while watching over their livestock, hoping for the day they might earn their place in the ranks of these proud women.

Where most other nations only use archers to simply soften up an enemy, they are the cornerstone of every Amazon army. In fact, the infantry are often used to merely protect the archers, who are generally the main killing power of the army, and then cavalry sent to mop up the remnants.

Agema Archers
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_gorgon13.jpg (https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/gorgon13.jpg)
These women are elite foot archers of the Gorgons, the long range killing power of their armies. They are armed with the most powerful composite bows of their people. However, they are also heavily armored and armed with the hoplite sword as a secondary weapon, and so can give a good account of themselves in melee combat if necessary.

Where regular Amazon Archers are drawn from the lower classes, these women are all aristocrats, either from birth or from earning that higher status by distinguishing themselves in battle. The greatest of all Gorgon archers, these women have been known to win battles simply through their arrow-fire alone. They are the most fearsome archers in the world, and strike fear into the hearts of all who face them across the battlefield.

Onagers & Heavy Onagers
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_gorgon07.jpg (https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/gorgon07.jpg)
The onager is a catapult jokingly named for the tremendous kick it has when fired at the enemy (an "onager" is a wild ass). This war machine is powered by a twisted spring of animal sinew ropes, the most elastic substance available.

The throwing arm is held in tension by the sinews. When pulled back and held by a catch it can fling a boulder with considerable speed and range. This version can be used for reducing stone fortifications, but it can also be used on the battlefield for destroying enemy artillery and harassing troops (although admittedly by killing some of them outright).

The onager can also be used to launch incendiary missiles such as firepots, making it a versatile piece of artillery to any commander.

Desert Infantry
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_gorgon12.jpg (https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/gorgon12.jpg)
Desert Infantry are males pressed into service in the Gorgon military. Not quick or nimble enough to perform as skirmishers, these men were instead made spearmen because of their strength and stamina. Equipped with spears and large shields of wood and animal hide, they are at their best when formed in a solid block of spearmen to repel cavalry. However, their morale is poor and training even poorer, so they cannot be expected to hold the line for long without support from female units.

These men represent the lowest orders of the Amazon military heirarchy, men who carry weapons and fight. While the idea is generally an anathema in Amazon society, these men are useful and often necessary to the Amazon war machine. As the Amazon saying goes: "Never send a man to do a woman's job, but if a woman is going to get killed doing it, then by all means send a man."

Axewomen
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_gorgon08.jpg (https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/gorgon08.jpg)
These women wield one of the signature weapons of Amazons, the Sagaris, or single-bladed axe. They carry several of these deadly weapons, and throw them at the enemy before attacking.

A breed apart from their sister infantrywomen who carry the cumbersome hoplite panoply and fight in densely packed formations, Axewomen are armored with lighter scale armour and smaller shields, and fight in looser groups in order to allow for the swing of their axes. While this means they cannot last as long as the hoplites in a long, head-on slugging match, it also makes them far more flexible and quick of foot. They are ideal as quick raiders and shock troops, especially when attacking city walls or springing ambushes.

Agema Axewomen
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_gorgon16.jpg (https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/gorgon16.jpg)
These women are the elite shock troops of the Gorgons, wielding the most distinctive symbol of Amazon power - the Labrys - or double-bladed axe. They are called "The Brides of Athena" for they have dedicated their lives solely to war and the shedding of blood.

Agema Axewomen are heavily armored but carry no shield, needing both hands to wield their fearsome weapons. They fight in loose groups in order to allow for the swing of their axes, but also have much more flexibility than their rigid hoplite sisters. They are the most powerful assault troops of the Gorgons, whose mere presence can be enough to make weak-willed enemies flee in terror. As such they are ideally used as the first troops up the ladders or out of the siege towers to take a settlement, or otherwise at the very point of the attack.

Militia Cavalry
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_gorgon05.jpg (https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/gorgon05.jpg)
Militia cavalry are javelin-armed mounted skirmishers who can strike quickly and be gone in the time it takes a more ponderous enemy to react. They do not wear armour, but do carry shields and swords so that they can fight in hand-to-hand combat should the need arise. They are, however, best used to dash in and harass a mass of enemies, such as heavy infantry who cannot hope to catch them.

They are not ideally suited to fighting other skirmishers - many of their javelins will be wasted against targets who can dodge, after all - but they can be very useful in harrying fleeing enemies and driving them from the field.

Heavy Cavalry
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_gorgon03.jpg (https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/gorgon03.jpg)
Armed with throwing axes, Gorgon heavy cavalry are horsewomen who can also fight hand-to-hand with their swords as well - a potent combination in one force! They wear scale armour under their long robes and carry shields so they are well protected in close quarter fighting. Their primary means of attack, however, remains the throwing axes that they carry, known as the sagaris. They can pepper an enemy with missiles and then have the option of closing to deliver the coup de grace, or they can withdraw and await another opportunity for mischief!

They are not ideally suited to fighting other skirmishers - many of their axes will be wasted against targets who can dodge, after all - but they can be very useful in driving broken enemies from the field.

Elephants
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_gorgon14.jpg (https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/gorgon14.jpg)
Elephants are a terrifying spectacle to opposing troops, well able to smash battle lines and toss men aside like dogs with rats.

Standing at just over two metres tall at the shoulder, these particular animals are rather tractable and can be trained for warfare relatively easily. They are fast moving, able to trample and gore enemies seemingly at will when being urged on by their riders. They are a living battering ram aimed at the enemy battle line. When pursuing enemies they can be even more deadly.

Each elephant is unarmoured, but many blows simply glance off the tough hide. Only a single rider is carried.

Camel Lancers
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_gorgon04.jpg (https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/gorgon04.jpg)
These tough desert women are 'camel lancers', exploiting the speed of their mounts and the fear effect that camels cause to horses. The Gorgons are wise indeed to exploit this pool of skilled fighters. These are also a hardy people, and can put up with many privations thanks to their desert upbringing.

They are not the strongest cavalry in the world, but they can surprisingly effective against both infantry and especially other (horse) cavalry. Armed with spears and carrying large shields, they are not at their best in protracted melees, but used as hit-and-run raiders they can be very effective.

Gorgon Cavalry
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_gorgon18.jpg (https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/gorgon18.jpg)
These Amazon horsewomen are the equestrian elite of the Gorgons. More at home on the back of a mare than on the ground, they are more than a match for their Carthaginian and Numdians when it comes to skill at riding. Their bows are slightly smaller and less powerful than their footborne kinswomen, but they make up for that with their speed and nimbleness, not to mention their power in close-combat.

War Elephants
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_gorgon09.jpg (https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/gorgon09.jpg)
War elephants are fierce and terrible beasts, able to trample men and horses into the dirt. Over three metres tall at the shoulder, these are large and bad-tempered animals, and they have been known to run wild with fear and anger in battle. When this happens no one - friend or foe - is safe. For this reason the driver always carries a small mallet and a spike so that she can kill the animal if necessary by driving the spike into the base of the skull.

The crew are armed with bows to shoot down into tightly packed enemy formations, but the elephant itself is also a weapon: it can trample and gore men easily, hurling them around like rag dolls.

Camel Archers
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_gorgon15.jpg (https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/gorgon15.jpg)
These camel-mounted archers are effective skirmishers, especially in deserts.

These women are good archers and untiring fighters thanks to their harsh upbringing. They can move swiftly, staying away from most infantry and other skirmishers. When attacked by cavalry they are at an advantage should a melee ensue. The very smell of camels can upset horses in battle and a cunning commander can use this to her advantage.

Companions
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_gorgon10.jpg (https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/gorgon10.jpg)
Gorgon Companion Cavalry are a social and military elite, the Royal Bodyguard of the Queen - her Hetaroi - or Companions.

They are expert horsewomen, riding the best mounts and have the finest armour armour available. Each is armed with a good lance and a sword for close combat. As heavy cavalry they can be a decisive arm of battle, and are able to charge down many opponents. They are best used as shock cavalry to break wavering enemy formations, but do need to be careful - as with all cavalry - when attacking spearmen. Bravery is of little use when galloping straight onto a row of gleaming spear points!

Traditionally these women would be given land grants after great victories, giving them a personal stake in the battle's outcome.

Here is a complete map showing every territory, city, and port (click on the thumbnail to see the full version):
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_atwregions.png (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/atwregions.png)

Most of it is the same as in vanilla, just with more territories. The major changes are the Gorgons down at the lower left in Saharan Africa, and the Numidians along the western coast of North Africa. The Greek Cities now hold the new city of Triton on the coast of Lake Tritonis to the south of modern Tunisia, and they have Athens as well, but not Thermon anymore. The Romans are the rulers of Italy, as I wanted them to still be a powerhouse. The Parthians no longer start with Campus Sakae way up on the plains, and instead have a third territory in the middle east. The Seleucids have nearly doubled their territories, but are still in the same general location. Amazonia is located roughly where Pontus used to be, and New Amazonia is way off to north in the forests of modern Russia. Scythia has been confined to the north coast of the Black Sea, and the Sarmatians have the steppe between the Don and Volga rivers.

You will notice a great many more territories in North Africa, the Steppe, and the Middle East. I have done this to make those areas more interesting. The normal vanilla game tends to funnel activity in toward the center of the map by leaving only a few territories around the edges. I have tried to reverse this by giving the factions on the map edges more room to play in, and hopefully make their neighborhoods more exciting to play in, rather than being sideshows.

Here is a map showing the starting territories of each faction:

Faction Preview: Amazonia

"We are riders; our business is with the bow and the spear, and we know nothing of women's work."
-- Herodotus IV, 114

Founded long before the legendary fall of Troy, Amazonia has stood in the east for over a thousand years. Her capital in Themiskyra, on the banks of the Thermodon river, has stood against fire, flood, and siege and held firm through all. The Amazon race is said to descend from the blood of the god Ares himself, which may account for the zeal they show when partaking in war.

The word Amazon is the Ionian Greek form of the Iranian word ha-mazan, meaning "fighting together." The regular Greek form would be hamazon, but over time it simply became amazon. Also known to the Greeks as Androktones, or "The Killers of Men", and to their Scythian cousins as Oiorpata (which has the same meaning), the Amazons are women who refuse to submit to any man. Indeed, it is said by some that before she may procreate, an Amazon must kill at least one man in battle. While this is likely a tall tale, at least concerning the common women of Amazonia, it is true that among their warriour elite that a woman must face battle before being considered fully one of their own.

In the Iliad, the Amazons were referred to as Antianeira, or "Those Who Fight Like Men". Indeed, they do fight in the same hoplite fashion as their male Greek counterparts. However, they are also practiced in the use of the axe, a weapon favored by many of them for its killing power in hand to hand combat. Yet these are the least of their martial distinctions. For ever have the Amazons been especially gifted horsewomen, having tamed the horse long before the men of Greece learned to ride. Most fearsome however is their legendary skill with the bow, which some say is a sacred gift of the goddess Artemis, who is held in higher regard by the Amazons than even their progenitor Ares.

While most men in Amazonia live in drudgery, some of them may rise to positions of a certain stature. While the Amazons may sometimes be described as warriour-priestesses praying for battle, they also realize the need for trade and diplomacy. In aid of this they often send distinguished men from their courtesan caste out into the world as spies, diplomats, and merchants. Surprisingly, these men show an extraordinary amount of loyalty to their female overlords, refusing to break even under the most attractive enticements or the harshest of tortures.

Although originally a colony of the ancient Gorgon Amazons of Libya, Amazonia has been an independent monarchy for a thousand years. Since the fall of the Libyan Amazons a millennia ago, they have carried on the torch of Amazon civilization. During that time the Amazonians have maintained a conservative policy of alliances, diplomacy, and heavily fortified frontiers to insure their survival, even paying humiliating tributes to super-powers such as the Persian Empire and Alexander the Great in order to survive with their freedom and culture intact.

Long have the warriour women of Amazonia been quiet in the hills and valleys of their homeland. Waiting patiently as the titans of the world did battle with one another outside their doorstep. First the Persians, then Alexander. But the days of the great empires has passed, and their successors squabble with one another like dogs fighting over scraps from their great table. For the women of Amazonia this is an opportunity to carve their own mighty empire, one that might never again come to pass...

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_amazonia10.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/amazonia10.jpg)
Peasants are reluctant warriors, but numbers are useful in all armies. Forcing peasants to fight is one way of getting lots of women in the field quickly and cheaply. They have little tactical sense, and even less willingness to fight - they would rather be defending their own homes rather than be dragged to a battle they neither care about nor understand. But if nothing else, they are useful when there's digging to be done! They are, however, experts at reading the land and hiding whenever there is cover.

Peltasts
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_amazonia06.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/amazonia06.jpg)
Amazon peltasts are men who advance at speed to pepper an enemy with javelins, and then withdraw in good order before a counter-attack can be organised. They are skirmishers and it is their task to harass and disrupt enemy units before the main battle lines clash.

Peltasts are equipped with a clutch of javelins, a knife, and a light shield. They wear no other armour, and rely on speed as the best form of protection, and this isn't much protection should they be caught by cavalry or at long range by archers.

These women are elite foot archers of Amazonia, the deadliest archers in the world.

The greatest of all the archers of Amazonia, these women have been known to win battles simply through their arrow-fire alone. Onagers

Heavy Onagers
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_amazonia03.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/amazonia03.jpg)
The heavy onager is an enormous catapult built using the same basic design as its sibling and capable of smashing down stone fortifications. It is powered by a twisted bundle of animal sinew ropes, and is slow to wind back and reload. Its missiles are devastating, and it can also fire incendiary firepots.

Range is no more than the smaller onager and this makes the heavy onager susceptible to counter fire. Often, it is best employed alongside smaller artillery to deal with enemy fire.

Militia Hoplites
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_amazonia04.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/amazonia04.jpg)
Amazon Militia Hoplites are males pressed into service in the Amazon military. Not quick or nimble enough to perform as skirmishers, these men were instead made hoplites because of their strength and stamina.

Militia Hoplites fight best as spearmen, and are armed with long spears and each carries the large round hoplon shield which gives them their name. They are at their best when used as a solid block of spearmen and can form a phalanx to attack the enemy. However, their morale is poor and training even poorer, so they cannot be expected to hold the line for long without support from female units.

These men represent the lowest orders of the Amazon military heirarchy, men who carry weapons and fight. While the idea is generally an anathema in Amazon society, these men are useful and often necessary to the Amazon war machine. https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_amazonia08.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/amazonia08.jpg)
The basis of nearly all military power in the Hellenic world once revolved around the hoplite. Operating in phalanxes, or tightly grouped blocks, these women are a powerful force against infantry or cavalry.

Hoplite tactics are simple: formations generally approach the opposing army in normal order, and then close ranks into the phalanx so that each soldier is protected by overlapping shields. Then it is simply a matter of closing with the enemy as quickly as possible to decide the battle. Well trained, these troops have great stamina, and are some of the most effective soldiers in the known world.

Hoplites generally supply their own equipment, so are not drawn from the poorer sections of society. They wear good scale armour, and carry both a round shield (the hoplon) and a thrusting spear. This spear has a bronze butt-spike to plant in the ground (bronze is not prone to rusting like iron), which doubles as a weapon if the pike shaft breaks.

Axewomen
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_amazonia09.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/amazonia09.jpg)

They are ideal as quick raiders and shock troops, especially when attacking city walls or springing ambushes deep in a forest.

Armoured Hoplites
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_amazonpreview87.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/amazonpreview87.jpg)
Armoured hoplites are an elite among Amazon soldiery, carefully selected and given the best training to make them superior spearwomen. Each of them is equipped with good body armour, greaves and a helmet and carries a large round shield, the hoplon that gives this kind of soldier the name of hoplite. Each woman is also armed with a formidable thrusting spear called the xyston and an infantry sword. They are usually employed as solid, close-packed groups of women, presenting a wall of spear points to the enemy. In phalanx formation, they use weight of numbers to batter into enemy formations.

They are vulnerable to flank and rear attacks, and ideally need some sort of light supporting troops such as Axewomen to screen them as they approach the enemy.

Agema Axewomen
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_amazonia11.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/amazonia11.jpg)
These women are the elite shock troops of Amazonia, wielding the most distinctive symbol of Amazon power - the Labrys - or double-bladed axe. They are called "The Brides of Ares" for they have dedicated their lives solely to war and the shedding of blood. It is said that many collect the heads of their victims and display them proudly. A custom adopted from the Celts of nearby Galatia.

Agema Axewomen are heavily armored, even carrying a shield strapped across their backs, needing both hands to wield their fearsome weapons. They fight in loose groups in order to allow for the swing of their axes, but also have much more flexibility than their rigid hoplite sisters. They are among the most powerful assault troops of Amazonia, whose mere presence can be enough to make weak-willed enemies flee in terror. As such they are ideally used as the first troops up the ladders or out of the siege towers to take a settlement, or otherwise at the very point of the attack.

Militia Cavalry
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_amazonia01.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/amazonia01.jpg)

Heavy Cavalry
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_amazonpreview102.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/amazonpreview102.jpg)
Amazon heavy cavalry are javelin-armed horsewomen who can also fight hand-to-hand - a potent combination in one force! They wear scale armour and carry shields and swords so that they can close with opponents and fight when the situation requires. Their primary means of attack, however, remains the javelins that they carry. They can pepper an enemy with missiles and then have the option of closing to deliver the coup de grace, or they can withdraw and await another opportunity for mischief!

They are not ideally suited to fighting other skirmishers - many of their javelins will be wasted against targets who can dodge, after all - but they can be very useful in driving broken enemies from the field.

Amazon Cavalry
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_amazonia05.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/amazonia05.jpg)
These horsewomen are the elite horse archers of Amazonia. Members of the warriour-aristocracy, these women have spent their entire lives on horseback. More at home on the back of a mare than on the ground, they are a match for their steppe cousins when it comes to skill at riding. Equally important is their skill with a bow, which they have likewise mastered through a lifetime of use.

They are armed with composite bows that are slightly smaller and less powerful than their foot and chariot-borne kinswomen. However, they make up for that with their speed and nimbleness, not to mention their power in close-combat. For unlike most horse archers they carry swords and are armoured in good scale cuirasses, this makes them more than able to hold their own in any melee. This allows them to perform both the skirmishing role of light cavalry, and to charge into hand-to-hand as heavy cavalry.

Companion Cavalry
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_amazonpreview100.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/amazonpreview100.jpg)
Amazon Companion Cavalry are picked from the social and military elite of Amazonia. All are either born from aristocratic families or have earned that position through distinguished service. When not on campaign they live in the Royal Household and serve as an tended bodyguard and coterie of the Queen - her Hetaroi - or Companions. As such they form a personal bond with her that goes far beyond the loyalty of other troops. Often these women go on to serve as officers and generals, some might even be adopted into the Royal Family itself.

The Companions are expert horsewomen, riding the best mounts and have the finest armour available. Each is armed with a good lance and a longsword for close combat. As heavy cavalry they can be a decisive arm of battle, and are able to deliver a devastating charge that can smash all but the strongest enemy formations. However, they do need to be careful - as with all cavalry - when attacking spearmen. Bravery is of little use when galloping straight onto a row of gleaming spear points!

Amazon Chariots
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_amazonpreview90.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/amazonpreview90.jpg)
Amazon Chariots are the elite terror-units of Amazonia, the thundering sound of their chariots is often enough to unnerve even the strongest enemies. Riding chariots into battle may have become somewhat anarchronistic, but properly used they can still deliver a powerful blow to an unprepared enemy. Even if just to their morale.

Always moving, Amazon Chariots slice through an enemy line and continue on at a gallop, never stopping to engage in prolonged melee combat. Instead they use the speed and power of their charge (not to mention the large scythes on their chariot axles) to disrupt enemy formations and then move on. Then supporting horseborne cavalry or infantrywomen quickly come up to engage the still-reeling opponent for a one-two punch.

Amazon Captain and Early Bodyguard
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_amazonpreview84.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/amazonpreview84.jpg)
This general has a bodyguard of loyal heavily armoured cavalry to accompany her onto the field. Armed with javelins and swords, these women are not only very good shock cavalry, able to deliver a devastating and almost unstoppable charge, but they can also stand off and slaughter an enemy with missiles.

Like all general's guards, this unit is best committed to the fight at the point of crisis, when the general's inspirational leadership and the combat power of her women can tip the balance.

Well, first impression is definitely good. I like all your added skins (the Macedonian hypaspists and Greek Sacred Band in particular), the descriptions of the Amazon factions are extremely detailed, I definitely like all the added settlements, which will make the more barren areas of the vanilla map more interesting (and maybe the poor Seleucid Empire will stand a chance now...), and I like the use of Senate colors for the Romans (red is way overused). I also like the Amazon FM portraits.

A couple things I noticed:
1. The Amazon unit cards say they use compound bows, which is incorrect. They would have composite bows (the bows used by western factions, I believe, were called "self" bows, just for mentioning sake).
Compound bows are a modern invention. :sweatdrop:
2. The Amazon hoplites' beoetian shield (the figure-8 shaped one) appears fully circular when viewed from behind.
3. Cheats don't work with Neo Themiskyra. I discovered that when I was cheating city levels up to check out recruitment levels. I didn't push all added cities to max yet, but that's the only one that it's happened with so far.

Suggestions:
I think giving Amazonia and New Amazonia some units unique to them would do well to set them apart from eachother. Ideas as follows:

Amazonia ~ Since they're right in the middle of the sphere of Macedonian influence, I suggest making Companion Cavalry unique to them, giving also them an intermediate phalangite unit, and maybe a light hypaspist unit.

New Amazonia ~ With the geography in their regions being mountainous and forested, I suggest converting their armored hoplites into a legionary-style sword unit, and giving them an elite skirmisher unit, as well.

Thank you Spartan.

I never really noticed that I was using compound rather than composite. I will put changing that on my to do list.

I know about the Hoplite's shield appearing round from the back. I do not have an eta on when I will fix that, if ever. The trouble is that the shield model is circular, and while the UVW Map for the front face is a complete circle, the UVW for the back is only a little pie-shaped wedge. So I cannot make the back appear to have the cutouts that the front does. At least not until I get better at using 3ds Max...

Cheats work for Neo Themiskyra, you just need to use the name NeoThemiskyra. That is the internal name of the city.

New Amazonia is going to become an emergent rebel faction shadowing Amazonia, so need to keep their unit rosters identical. At least that is my plan now. I will not be implementing that until version 2.4 (I am currently working on 2.3, so it will be a while yet). After I do I am going to see how that works out. If I do not like it and put them back to being a regular faction I do plan to make some changes to the New Amazonian unit roster. Basically to make them more "barbaric" in flavour, giving them a Warband rather than Militia Hoplites, etc...

Another thing you could do with the BI version is to give some units the shield_wall and schiltrom abilities.

And also, I know historical accuracy isn't your aim here, but Roman triarii historically fought in phalanx formation.

Now I just have to finish tweaking the number of units each faction's hordes receive. Then I was thinking of creating some new female Celtic units, tweaking the German and Amazon two-handed axe units by giving them a shield across their backs, making the Gorgons start as an emergent horde, and creating a provincial campaign for them so they can be played normally. Then 2.3 will be ready to release.

Thank you Olaf.

Once the next version is out (probably in a few weeks), the Gorgons, Gaul, Germania, Scythia, Sarmatia, and Parthia will all be hordable. The Gorgons will begin the game as a horde.

I think this will make the game more interesting in Europe, as Gaul usually gets wiped out pretty early by the combination of Germania, Briton, and Iberia. While having hordes on the steppe just makes common sense to me. Parthia was of course a steppe people to begin with (The Parni, originally part of the Dahae Confederation), and they usually do not do much either, and eventually get wiped out by Egypt. Their hording will make things more interesting in the east. The Gorgons were always envisioned as a horde by me, so they were the first faction I started on.

If you like EB, you could play ATW on another comp while you wait during the load screens... ;)

Hmmmm, is it a generic error message saying something to the effect of "Rome total war barbarian invasion has stopped working"? Someone else got that in the last few days as well, and I am stumped as to why. I downloaded the zip as a test and and found it was working on my computer, so I do not think it is the download. When you are finished downloading it, the zip should be 80,515 kb in size when you look at it in Explorer (78.6 MB if you look at its Properties). If it is not then some of it probably got lost in your download.

You could try downloading it here (http://www.moddb.com/mods/amazon-total-war/downloads) from ModDB, in case that works better.

I am honestly clueless as to what can be causing it. This is only the second time I have run across it with ATW, and it gives no indication of what could be doing it.

I do all my work on XP. I would not touch Vista with an 16 foot sarissa, and a Mac would not be feasible for me.

Are you using Vista or a Mac running Bootcamp? Maybe one of those two OS's is causing the problem? (Although I know people with Vista who can play ATW fine).

Version 2.3b for Barbarian Invasion is now available, both in full version and a patch from 2.3. It has a number of small balancing fixes, including:

# Reduced the number of units in the starting Gorgon Horde.
# Slight increase to starting armies of North African factions.
# Reduced population bonuses given to AI cities at the beginning of the campaign.
# Increased stats of Numidian Cavalry.

I am still working on ATW, although mostly I have been doing a Gorgon AAR here (http://rtw.heavengames.com/cgi-bin/forums/display.cgi?action=ct&f=10,7945,0,100). Playing the Gorgons has been fun, and has helped me find many bugs that I have fixed. All little things like sprites not appearing correctly, the wrong banner appearing on empty Macedonian cities, the wrong faction name given in the pop-up text over Gorgon cities, etc...

I also went and created new Captain models for most factions on the Strat Map:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/captains.jpg

I also decided to not make New Amazonia a rebel faction shadowing Amazonia. With that in mind I am making some changes to their unit roster so they will be more distinctive from Amazonia. I will be removing all their hoplites and replacing them with a Warband for an entry-level unit, and a yet to be created Spearwoman unit for their second tier. Finally I will be giving them an entry-level horse archer, which I have nearly completed.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/amazonhorsearcherscipii.jpg

I plan to use this model/skin as a basis for a few more Celtic units, such as a Javelin-Cavalry unit for Gaul, and to replace the archers in the Light Chariots of the Britons.

I am also fairly sure that I will replace New Amazonia's Agema Axewomen with a Berserker unit as well. An idea I got when I was working on unit cards from Andalus' AUP. I like the idea of putting one of those bearskins on an Amazon unit. Or maybe even just one of the Roman Velite's wolfskins. I could call them the Sows of Ares... https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/amazon_spearwoman_dragon02.jpg

Option 2
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/amazon_spearwoman_dragon01.jpg

Which looks better? I am leaning toward the second one as it is simpler and thusly easier to make out. Once I decided which to go with I will put a black outline around the dragon to make it stand out a bit better.

I have also decided that I want the Spearwomen to be a 3rd tier unit, one that New Amazon can use as the backbone of its infantry throughout the middle and late game, much as Amazonia's Armoured Hoplites do. With that in mind I am going to give them a javelin to throw before engaging in melee, and might change their leggings to a metal greave.

This also means I will need a new infantry unit at 2nd tier. I am thinking of perhaps a Militia Axewoman, with a shield, axe, and little or no armour.

The first one is MOAR epic!

I think the 1st one is better aswell, but i would tone down the yellow, it clashes with the background colours

SubRosa
02-13-2009, 22:53
I am really not sure what color to use. I need something that will work against both the white and blue background is the problem. So I was thinking red, yellow, orange, or perhaps green.

I finished the Militia Axewomen.

https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/miltiaaxewoman.jpg

Given that they are using the small crescent shield, I went and gave the 3rd tier Axewomen the fancier crescent shield.
https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/scipiiaxewoman.jpg

Now however, I am at the EDU and DMB limits, so I will have to free up some slots in both before I can go any further.

Thank you Legio.

I spent the last day condensing the EDU and DMB. A most onerous task, especially when you consider I have to do it twice, once for the BI version and a second time for the RTW version of the mod. After this next release I am no longer going to support the RTW version. It is just too hard to update two versions of the same mod.

Back to that Spearwoman. I added a pila for a precursor weapon. I think this may make them the only spear unit in RTW that throws a javelin. The BI version of the unit has the shield wall ability, and can throw the pila just fine while in the wall. The RTW version has the phalanx ability, and I found cannot throw the pila when in phalanx formation. Interesting.

I also did some minor tweaks to the skin, making her shoulderpads made out of mail, and adding a greave to her leg. Finally, I outlined the dragon symbols in black, and now they look much better. I am still not sure which to go with, but now I am leaning more to to Option 1.

Option 1
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/amazon_spearwoman_dragon02b.jpg

Option 2

SubRosa

I like Option 1 the best as well. It seems to be unanimous across several forums. However, the problem is that when you zoom out to even a small extent the dragon just becomes a yellow blob. Even on the large unit card.

The problem is that with it being not only a rectangular shield, but a figure 8, I have to fit the image in that very narrow stretch of territory across the center of the shield. If I am going to center the image that is. I could put mirrored dragons at the top and bottom of the shield, but I do not think that would look good.

So I think I will go back to square one and look for more images to use. What I really need is something that is tall but narrow, to fit the shield. Unfortunately dragons in those dimensions are typically Asian, and I want a Western dragon to reflect a Germanic/Slavic influence.

SubRosa

I have my final version of the Spearwoman shield. The answer was obvious. I took the wings off the more popular version and was thusly able to enlarge it to cover nearly all of the shield.

The winged version would look great on a round shield - provided the skin shows the whole shield and not just half or one-quarter to prevent mirroring or flipping.

Thanks guys,

I am thinking of using a different weapon than the double-headed axe, as that is the weapon of the Agema Axes as well. I am not sure what else I might use though. A two-handed sword does not feel right. Or a falx. I know I do not want that spiked club the German Berserkers have.

One thought I had was to use a single-bladed two-handed axe (the kind the German Chosen Axemen have) in each hand. But that idea seems to go to the ridiculous. Two of the normal single-handed axes might work. But I want something big and ominous.

luke_liddle

Olaf Blackeyes

SubRosa

A spear just does not seem big and ominous enough. Now that big spiked mace that Sauron had in the battle of the Last Alliance between Elves and Men would be good. But I do not have one of those. I am going to try two falxes or two rhomphaias and see how that looks.

Weapon aside, the berserkers are coming along. I have not had any luck with the raven mask, so it looks like the one they have now will stay. However, I did finally get the vertices of the bearskin weighted properly, so now it sticks to all the right parts of her. Almost done.

After taking a break from ATW to work on unit cards for the Additional Units Pack by Andalus, I am back to work. I made all of the New Amazonian skins a darker blue, and did some touch-ups on some of the units. I have a few more to go and they will be completely finished.

I am also thinking to changing the name of New Amazonia to something else. I was never thrilled with it, and I would like something that helps distinguish them from Amazonia. Given that geographically they are in the middle of barbarian territory, and that I have given their units a strong barbarian influence, I think their faction name ought to have a similar barbaric flair. So far I have come up with the following:

The Disir - (essentially lesser female deities in Scandinavian myth. Freja was called Vanadis, meaning the Dis of the Vanir.)
The Asyniur or Asynior - (again, the term used for a female goddess, specifically one of the Aesir. Asynia being the singular term).
The Valkyrja - ("The Choosers of the Slain". Valkyries).

The rationale behind these names is that this is what the barbarians would have called the Amazons, and the impact that they left upon the barbarian psyche would have caused the name to enter remain in the form of myth long after the Amazons themselves had been gone and forgotten. Much like the Gorgons with Greek mythology.

What sounds best?

In other news, I have several non-Amazon units I am working on. The first is a unit I discovered there was a distinct need of in my recent Gorgon campaign. Nubian Spearmen Mercenaries. These guys will provide a much needed source of heavy infantry in the east half of Africa and the Sinai. Since I found that the regular version's stats were woefully poor, I buffed them up a bit as well.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/nubian_spearmen_merc.jpg

I have also added a few more names, and will hopefully have more coming. Finally, I have received permission from Signifer One to use his animation pack, so expect to see hoplites and a few other spear units using their weapons over-arm in the future.

Olaf Blackeyes

Asniur sounds 1337

SubRosa
03-01-2009, 23:07
The Asyniur is one of the front-runners for the new name.

I know it is a little early to be thinking about a sequel, but a little bird whispered something in my ear yesterday. Why not make an ATW 2 that was set in Barbarian Invasion? I could even call it Amazon Invasion. The idea is very appealing.

There are several factions that no one would miss which could be used for new Amazon factions, such as the Roxolani and Lombards (both of which are just carbon-copies of other factions). I could easily fit New Amazonia (or perhaps the Valkyrja / Asyniur if that is what they turn out to be called) in the Russian forests where they are in ATW 1. They might even replace the Slavs as an emergent horde originating from that area. Amazonia might be found in the Armenian mountains between the ERE and Sassanids, which would make playing them interesting. The Gorgons could replace the Berbers, which I think would make Africa a lot more interesting than the backwater it normally is in BI.

That is of course if I wanted to keep the original 3 Amazon factions around. I would probably not want to do that. Creating at least one new Amazon faction would be ideal, and having at least one or two of the old ones be extinct.

This is still a long way off, if I decide to do it. But it is something I am going to keep in mind. One stumbling block (for me at least), is that I would need the services of a good modeller/skinner or two, as this would require all new Amazon units, and creating 100% new ones is beyond me.

neo_deus
03-02-2009, 04:30
As for the new name for New Amazonia, maybe you could use a german influence corruption of "Amazon". With a few research I bet you could find something..

The new units look great, I especially like the Nubian Spearmen Mercenaries, since I am planning of making a similar unit for Spartacus.

My latest unit is a female barbarian archer. I created them to get some more female units in the barbarian rosters. Originally I was only going to make them for Gaul and the Britons, but I changed my mind and decided to replace all of the entry level barbarian archers with them. So the Gauls, Germania, Dacia, Scythia, and Rebels will have them, as well as the Britons (as a replacement for their Light Chariot crew)

Thank you very much. One of the things that prompted me to create Amazon: Total War was the fact there is nothing else around like it. There are a few mods that add a female faction or a few female units. But nothing of this scale. The ones that are not masturbation fantasies are even rarer.

WHY isnt this hosted?

I am sure if the local moderators feel ATW is deserving, it will get get hosting. Most sites want to see several months of regular activity before doing something like that however. I could not find the specific criteria for hosting here. Just a note that if a mod is very large and is backed up by a modding team then it might be promoted to its own subforum. So give it a while. Amazon Total War version 2.4 is now out!

That is right, a new version of ATW is now awaiting. 2.4 contains many bug fixes, changes, and additions. Most notable are the sweeping changes that New Amazonia have undergone, including their name changing to The Valkyrja. They now have a much more barbaric flavour to them, with new units that show a definite barbarian and steppe influence, and even a new temple. Expect a full Faction Preview of them in the days to come.

Here is a full list of additions and changes.

New Amazonia renamed to The Valkyrja, added Berserkers, Horse Archers, Amazon Warband, Amazon Skirmishers, Militia Axewomen, and Amazon Spearwomen to their roster. Removed their Temple of Ares and replaced it with Temple of Freja.
Edited Campaign Script to reduce the population bonus to AI controlled cities.
Edited the map to prevent pirates from spawning in Lake Tritonis.
Numerous bug fixes, including new Macedon banner not appearing over empty cities, advanced amazon walls not appearing correctly on the battle map, sprites not working for many units, Gorgon camel units being recruited where they should not be available, and Gorgon Companions not being recruitable from royal stable, and bug of Iberian General using Briton General skin.
New strat map captain models for nearly all factions.
New unit cards for Amazon Companions.
Made Generals recruitable.
Condensed EDU and DMB again.
New load screen overlays courtesy of Divus.
Added Nubian Spearmen Mercenaries.
Made Barbarian Archers female and gave Briton Light Chariots a female crew.
Added more Amazon names.
Created Female Gladiators for the Romans and Rebels.
Created new skins for Cretan Archers and Rhodian Slingers and made them a regularly recruitable unit in the Aegean by the Greek culture.
Partially implemented Signifer One's Animation Pack (for some of the archers).

Expect a full implementation of Signifer One's animations in version 2.5. It is something I have to work on, as his hoplite animation causes the soldier to turn her shield sideways when in Shield Wall. While that is fine if they have a round shield, it looks very strange with an oval or crescent shield. Currently the Amazon Spearwoman unit has a temporary workaround, using the javelinman skeleton in order to have the overhand spear use.

As before there are two separate copies of Amazon Total War. One for use with the Rome Total War executable, and the other for use with the Barbarian Invasion executable. You can find both here:

The Valkyrja

Daughters of the Dragon

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/valkyrjasymbol.png

So weave we, weird sisters,
Our warwinning woof.
Now Warwinner walketh
To weave in her turn,
Now Swordswinger steppeth,
Now Swiftstroke, now Storm;
When they speed the shuttle
How spearheads shall flash!
Shields crash, and helmgnawer
On harness bite hard!
- Njál's saga

Five centuries ago thousands of Amazons were taken prisoner by the Greeks after the disastrous Battle of Heraclea. The Amazon prisoners were taken aboard a fleet of ships to transport them across the Aegean to the Greek Cities, where they were to be sold into slavery. However, they were able to free themselves and slay the Greek crews. But not being sailors they could not find their way back home. Instead they drifted and eventually made landfall on the northern shores of the Euxine Sea (Black Sea).

There they encountered the Scythians, and after a minor battle with them, they made peace with the nomads. The Scythians were impressed with the martial prowess of the Amazons, and many wished to have them as wives. The Amazons quarreled with one another over the issue, and in the end were divided. Some of them went with the Scythians, but still refused to return to their settlements with them. Instead they rode off across the plains to the east, where they founded the new Sarmatian people.

The rest of the Amazons marched inland, and after journeying many months they grew tired of wandering and finally gave up hope of ever finding their way back home to Amazonia. So they carved a new home for themselves deep in the forests north of the great plains, in a place they found was rich in gold and teeming with wild game. Here they founded a new city of Vanahemir.

Realizing that without children their people would die out, they kidnapped men from the surrounding tribes to be their husbands, teaching these men their proper place in Amazon society or killing them in the process. These bitter raids and later genocidal wars resulted in the barbarians naming the Amazons "Valkyrja", which in their tongue means "Chooser of the Slain". The name was popular among the Amazons, and eventually it seeped into their culture so thoroughly that they could not think of calling themselves anything else.

It was also at this time that the Valkyrja adopted the dragon as their symbol. To their barbarian neighbors the dragon was a monstrous beast which they all feared. However, the Amazons had always known the serpent as a symbol of women's wisdom and power. A creature of the Underworld that knows the secrets of regeneration and rebirth. They saw the northern dragon as nothing more than a new face upon their old and dearly loved serpent, and laughed at the fools who dreaded it.

The hardships these women survived taught them to be even more independent of mind and spirit and self-sufficient that other Amazons. This is reflected in the government that they adopted: A Democracy, similar to that of the Athenian Greeks, only centuries before them. It is a place where all free women have a voice, and leaders are elected rather than born to theri positions. These women bow to no one, hold no Queen to be above them, and refuse to let anyone other than themselves be the rulers of their destiny. Indeed, their warleaders are simply called "Equals", and their supreme military leader is known as the "First Equal".

It should come as no surprise then that when in time merchants and explorers of the Valkyrja came into contact with similar travelers from their original homeland again relations were not cordial. In fact the first meeting resulted in several deaths when the Amazonians argued that the Valkyrja should pay homage to their Queen and recognize her as their rightful ruler. There has been nothing but bad-blood between the two Amazon nations since.

Peasants
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_valkyrja18peasants.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/valkyrja18peasants.jpg)

Warband
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_valkyrja16warband.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/valkyrja16warband.jpg)
Amazon Warbands are a simple levy drawn from the male population. Each man is given a stabbing spear and a large shield, and put in the battle line. Still, they fight well, as glory is their only road to any kind of status. In fact, where the men of other Amazon nations are pressed into service, these men join eagerly. For a man who distinguishes himself in combat stands a much better chance of attracting a woman of position and power in Valkyrja. For a man who is strong and tough is likely to sire women of the same quality. Having little discipline or training, these men can be relied upon for only one thing, to fight, and fight hard.

Militia Axewomen
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_valkyrja19militiaaxewomen.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/valkyrja19militiaaxewomen.jpg)
Militia Axewomen wield one of the signature weapons of Amazons, the Sagaris, or single-bladed axe. Protected by only a helmet and a crescent shield, they fight in loose groups to make the most of their speed and agility. While this means they cannot last as long as other units in long slugging matches, it does make them ideal as flanking troops and raiders, especially when springing an ambush in a forest or long grass.

Militia Axewomen are not truly professional soldiers. Rather they are common Amazon citizens called up for war. As such they have only received the mandatory two years of military training required of all Amazon women, and cannot be expected to show the kind of discipline and fortitude that members of the warriour aristocracy do.

Drakones
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_valkyrja09spearwomen2.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/valkyrja09spearwomen2.jpg)
Named after the dragons emblazoned upon their shields, the Drakones are the solid rock which all Valkyrja armies are founded upon. Members of the warriour-elite, they are well-trained and disciplined troops. Having long ago abandoned the rigid phalanxes that their Amazonian ancestors still practice, these women fight in more flexible gear and formations learned from centuries of warfare against the barbarians in the deep forests of the north.

The Drakones are spearwomen who wear the best mail armour and carry body shields shaped in the likeness of a woman's hourglass frame, the latter symbolizing that the goddesses of their homeland protect them. Armed with heavy spears, they are more than capable of standing up to any foe and coming out the victor.

They are vulnerable to flank and rear attacks, and ideally need some sort of light supporting troops such as Axewomen to screen them as they approach the enemy.

Axewomen
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_valkyrja14axewomen.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/valkyrja14axewomen.jpg)
These women wield one of the signature weapons of Amazons, the Sagaris, or single-bladed axe. They carry several of these deadly weapons, and throw them at the enemy before attacking.

A breed apart from their Amazonian cousins of who carry the cumbersome hoplite panoply and fight in densely packed formations, Axewomen are armored with lighter scale armour but still carry a large, crescent-shaped shield. They fight in looser groups in order to allow for the swing of their axes. While this means they cannot last as long as the hoplites in a long, head-on slugging match, it also makes them far more flexible and quick of foot.

They are ideal as quick raiders and shock troops, especially when attacking city walls or springing ambushes deep in a forest.

Agema Axewomen
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_valkyrja15agemaaxewomen.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/valkyrja15agemaaxewomen.jpg)
These women are elite shock troops of the Amazons, wielding the most distinctive symbol of Amazon power - the Labrys - or double-bladed axe. They are called "The Brides of Freja" for they have dedicated their lives solely to war and the shedding of blood. It is said that many collect the heads of their victims and display them proudly. A custom adopted from both their Scythian and Sarmatian cousins.

Agema Axewomen are heavily armored, even carrying a shield strapped across their backs, needing both hands to wield their fearsome weapons. They fight in loose groups in order to allow for the swing of their axes, but this also allows them greater flexibility. They are among the most powerful assault troops of the Amazons, whose mere presence can be enough to make weak-willed enemies flee in terror.

As such they are ideally used as the first troops up the ladders or out of the siege towers to take a settlement, or otherwise at the very point of the attack.

Militia Cavalry
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_valkyrja01militiacavalry.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/valkyrja01militiacavalry.jpg)
Militia cavalry are javelin-armed mounted skirmishers who can strike quickly and be gone in the time it takes a more ponderous enemy to react. They do not wear armour, but do carry shields and swords so that they can fight in hand-to-hand combat should the need arise. They are, however, best used to dash in and harass a mass of enemies, such as heavy infantry who cannot hope to catch them.\n\nThey are not ideally suited to fighting other skirmishers - many of their javelins will be wasted against targets who can dodge, after all - but they can be very useful in harrying fleeing enemies and driving them from the field.

Horse Archers
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_valkyrja04horsearcher.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/valkyrja04horsearcher.jpg)
These Amazon horsewomen are the equestrian backbone of Valkyrja. Drawn from the many herdswomen who populate the steppe regions under Valkyrjan control, they are more at home on the back of a mare than on the ground, and are the equal of their Scythian and Sarmatian cousins when it comes to skill at riding.

Their bows are slightly smaller and less powerful than their foot-borne kinswomen, but they make up for that with their speed and nimbleness. Armed with hand axes and carrying small shields, they can defend themselves in melee combat, but it is best not to rely upon them in such a role.

Heavy Cavalry
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_valkyrja03heavycavalry.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/valkyrja03heavycavalry.jpg)

Amazon Cavalry
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_valkyrja11amazoncavalry.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/valkyrja11amazoncavalry.jpg)
These horsewomen are the elite horse archers of the Valkyrja. Members of the warriour-aristocracy, these women have spent their entire lives on horseback. More at home on the back of a mare than on the ground, they are a match for their steppe cousins when it comes to skill at riding. Equally important is their skill with a bow, which they have likewise mastered through a lifetime of use.

They are armed with composite bows that are slightly smaller and less powerful than their foot-borne kinswomen.

Companions
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_valkyrja12companions1.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/valkyrja12companions1.jpg)
Amazon Companion Cavalry are the social and military elite of Valkyr. All come from influential families (the word aristocracy is never used by the Valkyrja, but in truth this is what they comprise), or have attained high status through distinguished service. When not on campaign they live in the First Equal's Household and serve as an extended bodyguard and coterie - her Hetaroi - or Companions. As such they form a personal bond with her that goes far beyond the loyalty of other troops. Often these women go on to serve as officers and generals, some might even be adopted into her own family.

Skirmishers
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_valkyrja08skirmisher.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/valkyrja08skirmisher.jpg)
Skirmishers are lightly armed troops who should break up and harass enemy formations before the main battle lines meet, and act as a screen for heavier troops. Their skills also make them useful in springing tactical ambushes.

Each man is armed with a clutch of throwing spears, a short sword and a small shield, but they do not wear armour preferring speed over protection.

Skirmisher Warbands are made up of young Amazon men who are both quick and agile. They join the military in order in order to distinguish themselves in combat. Their hope is to attract a woman of the warriour aristocracy with their superiour skills. A man who displays dexterity and excellent hand-eye coordination is considered likely to sire daughters who are superiour archers. In a society that values archery as highly as the Amazons do, this makes a man a very good candidate for marriage.

Amazon Archers
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_valkyrja13amazonarchers.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/valkyrja13amazonarchers.jpg)
These women are foot archers of the Valkyrja, the long range killing power of their armies. They are armed with the powerful composite bow of the Amazon people. Yet being lightly armored they are vulnerable in melee combat, especially to enemy cavalry.

Unlike other civilized cultures, the Amazons prize archers as daughters of Artemis.

Agema Archers
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_valkyrja10agemaarchers1.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/valkyrja10agemaarchers1.jpg)
These women are elite foot archers of the Valkyrja, the deadliest archers in the world. They are armed with the most powerful composite bows of their people. However, they are also heavily armored and armed with a sword as a secondary weapon, and so can give a good account of themselves in melee combat if necessary.

Where regular Amazon Archers are drawn from the lower classes, these women are all well placed in society, either from birth or from earning that higher status by distinguishing themselves in battle. The greatest of all the archers of Valkyr, these women have been known to win battles simply through their arrow-fire alone. They are the most fearsome archers in the world, and strike fear into the hearts of all who face them across the battlefield.

Onagers
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_valkyrja06onager.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/valkyrja06onager.jpg)

Heavy Onagers
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_valkyrja05heavyonager.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/valkyrja05heavyonager.jpg)

Berserkers
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_valkyrja17berserker.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/valkyrja17berserker.jpg)
Berserkers are Amazons who have so dedicated themselves to the dark side of Freja that they see themselves as being her own personal agents of death in this world. More than any others, it was they who caused the nearby barbarian tribes give the Amazons the name Valkyrja, which literally means "Chooser of the Slain". They are known to be without mercy, common sense, and the willingness to stop fighting once unleashed. They are supremely dangerous foes in close combat.

These women eschew all forms of armour, as they see it a sign of weakness. Instead they wear bearskins and cover their faces in black masks, completing their frightful appearance by painting their bodies in woad. They carry a great double-bladed axe which they use to an effect which the Agema Axewomen are envious of.

Amazon Berserkers are extremely ferocious, aggressive, indomitable warriors with no thought for personal safety once the rage of battle comes upon them. They will use chants, strong drink, potions, rituals and even self mutilation to whip themselves into a fighting frenzy. Once the madness is upon them, little can stop them - their blood-crazed dash into the thick of combat is deeply disheartening (at best) to any who stand against them. They may try to cut their enemies to pieces in this state, but will think nothing of trying to gouge, bite, head butt and kick opponents to death as well.

Early General's Bodyguard

This general has a bodyguard of loyal heavily armoured cavalry to accompany her onto the field. Armed with javelins and swords, these women are not only very good shock cavalry, able to deliver a devastating and almost unstoppable charge, but they can also stand off and slaughter an enemy with missiles.

Like all general's guards, this unit is best committed to the fight at the point of crisis, when the general's inspirational leadership and the combat power of her women can tip the balance.

Since I have been playing them, I have been thinking about the Valkyrja and how I might make feel more distinct. Not with dramatic things like units or temples, just with a little more depth to their background.

Since they are a democracy, I am thinking of calling the leaders of the Valkyrja "Equals". The Faction Leader would be "First Among Equals". Rather like the title Princeps, that the Roman emperors used during the Principate. I could use Greek or German/Norse words for the titles, or just stick with it in plain English as it is.

I have also been thinking about the Spearwoman unit they get at 3rd tier.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/valkyrja/th_valkyrja0491.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/valkyrja/valkyrja0491.jpg)

I would like to give them a less generic name the simply "Spearwomen". Going with the shield design I might call them something like the Dragon Guard, or Drakonis, or Dragon's Teeth (I rather like that one, as it is a nice play on their spears). Does anyone have any other ideas?

While I think about a name for the Spearwomen, I went and renamed the internal faction name of the senate to slavs for both the BI and RTW versions of the mod. This means no more senate tab when playing the Romans. It also means I can now do emergent hordes in the BI versions if I want.

I was originally thinking of doing the Gorgons that way, and have them emerge at a predetermined date during the game. Perhaps 20 years in or so. That would give them a lot of largish cities to sack when they turned up in North Africa, and allow the other factions a chance to get situated there before facing them. So I might go ahead and do that. Of course if I do make them an emergent faction, I will create a Provincinal Campaign that would allow you to play them as normal.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_atwregions.png (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/atwregions.png)

Basically I took map_regions.tga, blew it up, and added the names of all the territories and cities. While I was at it I changed the internal names of many cities and a few regions to match the names being displayed in-game. I also renamed Neo Themiskyra to Vanahemir.

I did a little work so far today. I made farms destroyable, and since I have noticed that the cities in the Crimea are growing at insane rates, I reduced their base farming levels and removed the grain resource from Chersonesos. I also noticed that the Amazon Warband cost was far too low, and brought it up to be more in line with that of other Warbands (but slightly cheaper, as they are not quite as good).

SubRosa

As you can see I am still working on little things in between the Valkyrja AAR. I went through the bottom and mid-tier units and raised the morale of all of them. Now your basic 1st tier infantry unit (Warband, Town Watch, etc...) will have a morale of 4. 2nd tier is usually a morale of 6, and 3rd a morale of 8. This varies slightly by unit. I even gave all Peasants a morale of 1. This ought to make the bottom end units the AI loves to spam last a little bit longer in a fight.

I also decided to rename the Valkyrja Spearwomen to Drakones (Drakon being Greek for Dragon), and updated their campaign description to shed more light on their use of the dragon as their faction symbol.

I am now thinking of creating a few new Valkyrja mercenary units. The old Amazon Hoplites look kind of odd on the steppe. I might create an Axewoman merc to replace them there. Maybe a merc Amazon Horse archer too. I am also giving thought to changing the model for the Valkyrja's base archer unit to the new female Barbarian Archer.

SubRosa

Since I have discovered that I have much more room to expand in the EDU, I have decided to create separate entries for all of the Valkyrja units. This will allow me to give them unique descriptions and give them all snow bonuses.

I have also noticed that the Valkyrja have been very difficult to play. Even for me. I know from email that other people have not been nearly as successful with them as I. So I think a little balancing in their favour might be in order.

One of the big problems I have been having in my own Valkyrja campaign is the large distances between my cities. They are really more like islands in a vast ocean, each essentially on its own. Compounded with this the capital is located far from everything else, so as you expand it quickly is too far away to be a viable troop recruitment center. Contrast this to a Carthaginian, Greek, or Amazonian campaign where their capitals and other beginning cities remain viable troop production centers for nearly the entire game.

So one thing I know I will do is move Melanchlaeni to the east and a little south, and Careote to the west and a little north. Then I will put a new province with Vanahemir in the middle of them. The old Vanahemir will remain as either a rebel settlement or a starting Valkyrja one (with a different name of course).

I am also thinking of doing things to improve their economy in general. Increasing base farming levels, the number of resources, initial populations of their regions, making their units cheaper, or somewhat more powerful, etc... I might even put a grain resource in one of their territories to push up the population growth, but I am uncertain about that.

SubRosa

I moved Vanahemir south between Careotae and Melanchlaeni, and created the new territory of Mari in its old place. I gave more resources to the starting Valkyrja territories, and gave them another starting General.

Here are their new starting territories:

This evening I added another new territory. This one in Scandinavia. The city of Aranaes is the Old Swedish name of Earnanaess, where the lair of the dragon that killed Beowulf was.

Its creation is another response to my current Valkyrja campaign. I have been sitting on Vicus Aesti and Vicus Gepidae, and have never had any sea trade at all because I have been at war with Germania. So I created Aranaes mainly to serve as a place you could take in order to get some Baltic Sea trade going, and loaded it with resources so it is worth the effort.

I noticed that it will also give Vicus Gepidae someone to trade with. It looks as if even if you hold all of the Baltic Sea ports you will not get any sea trade from there.

I have not been slacking. I have created a Mercenary Amazon Axewoman unit to replace the Amazon Hoplites on the northern plains, and a Rebel Militia Axewoman unit to add to the rebel population in those parts. I have also renamed Porrolissum to Sarmizgetusa and moved it to a more historically correct position.

Currently I am working on the animations. Here is a little preview:

luke_liddle

My opinion is that they should both use the underhanded attack. It will seperate them more from the units who do use it, plus they are not hoplites per se, just spearmen

SubRosa
04-27-2009, 01:49
I made a list of them and took a closer look at both their models and EDU stats. What I noticed that they have a small spear model, and that they do not have the spear_bonus_8 attribute. They typically have a light_spear, spear_bonus_4 instead.

So as you were saying, they are really just spearmen, and not hoplites or something similar to hoplites. So I agree. I am going to leave them with the underhand attack. Instead I am pretty much only giving it to units with a phalanx ability but do not have the long_pike attribute. Those will keep the underhand attack too of course.

The only real deviation from that are the Triarii, whom I did give the overhand attack and a shield wall. I am not sure if I want to do the same for the Infantry Auxilia. Right now I am thinking not.

SubRosa
04-28-2009, 00:45
I finally finished the implementation of the overhand spear attack for hoplites and their cousins. While I was at it I gave them the shield_wall ability rather than phalanx, and removed their sword sidearms (the latter because they were always drawing it to charge whenever they attacked).

It was a lot of work, because I had to edit almost all of the .cas files involved to anchor their shields to the elbow rather than the hand. Then I spun the shields 45 degrees to the left so if they had a rectangular shield they were holding it straight up rather than at an angle. If they had a round shield I did the same so their symbols would appear right side up.

I also changed a few shields and textures, most notably for the German Spearwarband and the Armenian Heavy Spearmen. Both new shields are courtesy of Halie Satanus.

Here are some pics:

I am finished with all of the animations, new unit cards for some units that changed to an overhand attack, and have even added a Temple of Demeter to Amazonia and the Valkyrja. I have also created separate EDU entries for the Valkyrja units, allowing me to give them all snow bonuses, and create unit descriptions specific to Amazonia and the Valkyrja.

For the example, the Amazonian Companions description is now this:

Amazon Companion Cavalry are picked from the social and military elite of Amazonia. All are either born from aristocratic families or have earned that position through distinguished service. When not on campaign they live in the Royal Household and serve as an extended bodyguard and coterie of the Queen - her Hetaroi - or Companions.

While the Valkyrja Companions have this:

Amazon Companion Cavalry are the social and military elite of Valkyr. All come from influential families (the word aristocracy is never used by the Valkyrja, but in truth this is what they comprise), or have attained high status through distinguished service. When not on campaign they live in the First Equal's Household and serve as an extended bodyguard and coterie - her Hetaroi - or Companions. As such they form a personal bond with her that goes far beyond the loyalty of other troops. Often these women go on to serve as officers and generals, some might even be adopted into her own family.

I have a few sprites to generate, and I am thinking of separating the EDU entries for the Valkyrja and Amazonia Generals. Then I will probably be releasing version 2.5. Most likely sometime this weekend.

Amazon: Total War version 2.5 is now out! For the moment you can download it at Filefront. The BI version is here (http://files.filefront.com/amazon+25+bizip/;13692587;/fileinfo.html), and the RTW version is here (http://files.filefront.com/amazon+25+rtwzip/;13692671;/fileinfo.html).

Saves from previous versions are not compatible with 2.5.

Here is a list of changes:

Version 2.5 (BI)

Many bug fixes, including one of Amazonian Chariots causing a ctd.
Used Signifer One's Animation pack to change all hoplite and similar troops to overhand attacks, removed their secondary weapons, and gave them shield wall rather than phalanx formation. Also used the animation pack to implement new animations for all archers and horse archers.
Added Temple of Demeter to Amazonia and the Valkyrja.
Changed name of Neo Themiskyra to Vanahemir and moved it to a new location, adding a new territory to the old location and giving it to the Valkyrja.
Created separate EDU entries for the Valkyrja units, giving them all snow bonuses and sand penalties, as well as allowing for tweaking of the unit descriptions of both Valkyrja and Amazonian units.
Added Mercenary Amazon Axewomen and Rebel Militia Axewomen to northern steppe region.
Renamed internal name of Roman faction to Slavs, removing the Senate tab and allowing for emergent hordes.
Added new territory of Gautar to Scandinavia.
Made farms destroyable.
Renamed Porrolissum to Sarmizgetusa and moved it adjacent to the mountains.

The only real deviation from that are the Triarii, whom I did give the overhand attack and a shield wall. I am not sure if I want to do the same for the Infantry Auxilia. Right now I am thinking not.
Triarii were essentially still just Roman hoplites for all intents and purposes, AFAIK, so they should have the overhand spears (and this is how EB depicts them). I agree with Luke and suggest keeping Infantry Auxilia and barbarian spear warbands paired up with the underhand animation to differentiate them from hoplites.

I am now working on integrating Pinarius' horses. His horse textures are much, much better than those of vanilla. They also provide more variety in the appearance of different faction's horses.

It is going to be a lot of work however. He did not include sprites. So now I have to create new sprites for all the horses that have changed a shade in colour. That is at least half of all the horses in the game. Most likely three quarters when I am done.

Here are some samples of what I have have integrated so far:

The Valkyrja Medium Horse is a roan

I finished creating new sprites to go with the new horses. I have decided not to create new unit cards for every mounted unit that has changed their horse, as that would take forever. However, I probably will create new ones for the Amazon factions.

In the meantime, I have been playing with descr_lbc_db.txt in order to make the city views more interesting.

It is a very simple file to mod. You only have to add in the DMB entry of the units you want in the format you already see there. They do not even have to be units owned by the faction whose cities you are giving them to. Just do not try to add a mounted unit, as it will cause an immediate CTD. Also, units weapons will not be visible, but they will still walk around as if they are holding them. Shields are also still visible. So regular infantry units look strange. However, archer and crew units will walk around in a normal posture, as will generals and captains. So they are your best choices to use. I also found that mounts (without riders) work fine. So you can have horses, camels, elephants, dogs, pigs, etc... roaming around your cities.

So in version 2.6, expect to see views like this within your cities:
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_amazonpreview170.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/amazonpreview170.jpg)

I found a bug today that causes a CTD when going into a battle with Female Gladiators. The sprite line is incorrect. You can fix it by going to Amazon\Data\Descr_Model_Battle.txt, do a search for female_gladiator, and then replace the two sprite lines with the following code:

model_sprite slave, 60.0, amazon/data/sprites/slave_female_gladiator_sprite.spr
model_sprite slavs, 60.0, amazon/data/sprites/romans_senate_female_gladiator_sprite.spr

I have also uploaded a patch that will do the same thing, look for links in the OP.

Palantir's Lost Legion, and all of the LOTOR stuff of late in general, have gotten me thinking of an idea for ATW. Namely doing the Harry Turtledove misplaced legion idea in reverse. Instead of taking units from the regular world (that of Amazons ;)), and putting them in a fantasy world, why not take units from a fantasy world and pluck them into ATW?

So what I was thinking was at some future point when I have the time (yeah, right), of making a sub-mod of ATW that would replace one of the factions with one of Orcs and Black Numenoreans who were somehow transported from Middle Earth to regular Earth. Most likely I would replace Dacia, as they are the least interesting faction in ATW and have a good central location.

I would have to create a new culture for them, which does not thrill me as it was a lot of work doing that for the Amazons. But on the other hand I am sure I could get permission to use models and skins from the many LOTOR mods out there to fill out the unit roster.

It is an odd idea, and would never be part of the regular mod. But I think it would be fun to take Amazons against a horde of Orcs. Imagine Drakones vs. Uruks, Companions vs. Warg Riders, or Gorgon Elephants vs. Trolls?

Of course the tag line would have to be: "The Age of Women is over. The Age of the Orc has begun!"

Finally there is now a land-bridge between Scotland and Ireland. I am still not sure if I want to create one between the continent and the isles though. I am going to have to experiment with creating one and running some AI campaigns to see how it plays out.

I have done some more tweaking to the ground textures, varying the shades of the swamp and fertility types to take out the yellows and browns and make them greener. I like how it has turned out.

The map is much more brighter and lively. The fertile areas are easy to tell, the darker the green the more fertile you are getting. When you get really dark it is a forest. All of the ground types really stand out now , making it much easier to tell if an area is swamp or wilderness or something else.

The Nile Valley really pops out against the desert.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/th_amazonpreview173groundtypes.jpg (https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/amazonpreview173groundtypes.jpg)

The southern steppe shows the 3 basic fertility types. The northern half is low fertility, the area around Olbia is medium, and that around Tanais is high. The very neck of the Crimea is swamp

For quite a while now I have been thinking of putting another faction in the British Isles to make that corner of the map more interesting. Essentially a Pictish/Irish faction that would counter-balance the Britons.

The trouble has been I am out of free faction slots to use. I could use Dacia, but I worry about the power vacuum that would create in Central Europe. I suspect the Thracians would run wild throughout that region without the Dacians in their way.

I have also hesitated because I do not know how I could make a Pictish faction unique. Rather I expect it would be just another Celtic faction like the Britons and Gauls. While Dacia is a boring faction, I really do not want to put a lot of hard work into replacing them with another boring faction.
Then I started thinking, why not replace them with another Amazon faction? That would give me Amazon factions in every corner of the map, and certainly make the British Isles more interesting.

I see two basic options to do that. One is to replace Dacia with an Amazon faction and put it in northern Britain/Ireland. This would put them in almost immediate conflict with the Britons, and I suspect that one would eliminate the other early on. The Amazons would most certainly have to wipe out the Britons in order to expand anywhere else.

Option two is more complex. Replace Dacia with an Amazon faction in the British Isles. Remove the Briton faction completely, and replace them with an Indie Celt faction. These Indie Celts would have territories in both the British Isles and scattered throughout Europe, including some of the former Dacian territories. They may or may not be a rebel faction shadowing Gaul. This would call for a merging of what are currently Briton units with those of Gaul, which would make Gaul more interesting in the bargain.

I must confess while option #1 is the simplest, #2 is sounding very appealing to me. I think the main issue is how I would be able to make a 4th Amazon faction unique. As it is now I have a desert faction, a steppe faction, and a classic Mediterranean Amazon faction. I would need a way to make the British Amazons (Bamazons?) stand out.

I am thinking that perhaps they would be the most heavy infantry-oriented amazon faction. Something like Amazon Legionaries in gear and tactics perhaps, but with a barbarian flair. Maybe give them light and heavy chariots of the celtic style. I could remove the Berserkers from the Valkyrja and give them to the Bamazons.

I do not know what rationale I would use to create them either. I suppose they could be colonists from the Valkyrja. Or they might be home-grown Amazons who heard the tales of Amazonia et al. and decided to create their own Amazon state. Maybe they could be some dark cult exiled from one of the other Amazon factions for their unspeakable crimes?

Does anyone have any ideas? If I can see a way to create a unique Amazon faction, I will go ahead with option 2. Otherwise I think I am going to just leave things as they are now.

The Bean Sidhe are finished. Here are their starting territories:
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/amazonpreview211beansidheterritory.jpg

Now I just have to tackle turning the Britons into the Indie Celts, which will also include merging their unit roster and temples to some extent (maybe completely) with the Gauls. After that I might do some Amazon Auxiliary units for the Romans. Then I will release version 2.6.

The Bean Sidhe

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/beansidhesymbol.png

The Bean Sidhe (pronounced "ban-shee") are a nation of Amazons living in the islands of Albion and Hibernia. They did not originate there however. Rather they are the descendants of an invasion force that was sent by Amazonia to conquer those islands over five hundred years ago. It began when the Amazonians were flexing their military muscle and expanding from their home fortress of Themiskyra. Urartu was busy encroaching upon Assyrian territory, and the Assyrians themselves were in decline under weak rulers, while the last remnants of the Hittites had long since been vanquished.

This put the nascent Amazonian state in a position to expand its frontiers. First conquering the cities which were renamed Myrina and Trapezus, then turning their gaze westward at the Phrygians and Ionians. It was at this time that an Amazonian spy achieved an amazing coup. He learned the closely guarded secret of the source of the Phoenician's tin trade, a rainy island far beyond the Pillars of Hercules they called Belerion. This rare and valuable metal was required to produce bronze, which had remained highly prized even after the advent of the Iron Age. The Amazonians resolved to seize the tin for themselves and reap the profits.

With this in mind they assembled the largest fleet in Amazonian history, and with it transported fully one third of their entire army. The Amazonians were never the best of sailors however, and their galleys - made for the calmer waters of the Mediterranean - fared poorly in the stormy Atlantic. Many of them foundered, and those that did not were blown far off their original course.

They did eventually make landfall on a green island populated by tribes of wild Picti who adorned themselves with tattoos, painted themselves with woad, and took the heads of their defeated foes as trophies. The Amazons who had survived the voyage were naturally dismayed at the barbarous foes they found arrayed against them. However, the leader of the expedition - a princess of the Royal line named Deianira - burned their ships on the shore to prevent any return home. This steeled their hearts to the task at hand. The conquest of the rainy isle.

However they soon found that this was not the Belerion of the Phoenicians. Rather its inhabitants called it Eiru, and it was on a different island altogether. The Amazons did the only thing they could. They dug in and named their new home Mag Ealga (meaning "Plain of the Nobles") and conquered the surrounding tribes, absorbing those who saw the wisdom of adopting Amazon culture, and exterminating those that would not. This was a long, slow process however, lasting not years but generations, and the fabled tin mines of Belerion were soon forgotten in the pursuit of the more immediate goal of survival.

For the first decade of the struggle they anxiously looked to the seas for reinforcements from Amazonia to help them complete the invasion. Yet help would never come. For two years after the launching of the fleet the army of Amazonia met an allied army of Phrygians and Ionian Greeks at Heraclea and was utterly annihilated. Amazonia was not only unable to reinforce their expedition, but was in danger of complete destruction. In time Deianira's women learned of the disaster from of all people a Carthaginian trader. They were on their own.

Since then the Amazons of Deianira have grown strong, absorbing many native tribes into a larger federation led by an elected Queen. They came to be known to the Picts and later the Celts as the Bean Sidhe, or banshees, due to their unearthly battle cries. It is said by them that to hear their warcry means death. The Amazons found this to their liking, and gradually came to use the term themselves. This was not the only local custom they adopted either. As their own goddesses seemed distant in this far-off isle, they were quick to take up the worship of several local deities, giving them their own distinctive Amazon style of course. Likewise they soon discarded their old hoplite style of fighting, and eagerly adopted the great swords and chariots of Celts, and the deadly javelins of the Picti, improving upon each with Amazon engineering know-how. In fact, the Amazons adopted as many of the local customs as they enforced of their own resulting in a fusion of the cultures.

From their capital of Tir na nOg and colony of Tir Tairngire, the Bean Sidhe are now in a position to expand more deeply throughout the rainy isles. Under the leadership of a great Queen, they might finally realize their ancient goal of conquering them altogether, perhaps far, far more...

Peasants
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/beansidhe21-peasants.jpg

Slingers
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/beansidhe10-slingers.jpg
A sling is a deceptively simple weapon: a slinger can bring down the strongest warriour with a single shot. These slingers can send a hail of bullets towards the enemy, and target their shots for maximum damage. After all, they will have been hunting with slings since childhood. Slingers should not be allowed to get into melee combat, as their lack of armour and their relative lack of equipment - just a knife and a small shield - will soon lead to them being cut to pieces. Used to kill enemies from a distance, they are superb missile warriors.

Bean Sidhe Archers
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/beansidhe11-archers.jpg
These women are foot archers of the Bean Sidhe, the long range killing power of their armies. They are armed with the powerful composite bow of the Amazon people. Yet being lightly armored they are vulnerable in melee combat, especially to enemy cavalry.

Unlike other civilized cultures, the Bean Sidhe prize archers as daughters of Abnoba.

Chosen Archers
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/beansidhe09-chosenarchers.jpg
These women are elite foot archers of the Bean Sidhe, the deadliest archers in the world. They are armed with the most powerful composite bows of their people. However, they are also well-protected with good mail and armed with a sword as a secondary weapon, and so can give a good account of themselves in melee combat if necessary.

Where regular Bean Sidhe Archers are drawn from the lower classes, these women are all well placed in society, either from birth or from earning that higher status by distinguishing themselves in battle. The greatest of all the archers of Bean Sidhe, these women have been known to win battles simply through their arrow-fire alone. They are the most fearsome archers in the world, and strike fear into the hearts of all who face them across the battlefield.

Head Hurlers
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/beansidhe05-headhurlers.jpg
In battle, head hurlers throw the heads of fallen foes coated with quicklime. These missiles are both dangerous and loathsome. Head hurlers combine the practical and the macabre in equal measure - they collect the heads of fallen enemies and preserve these by dipping them in quicklime. The limed heads are used as disgusting missiles in battle, flung into enemy ranks at surprisingly long range. As missiles the heads are heavy enough to cause injuries (and have an undoubted impact on morale) but it is the lime that really does the damage, causing nasty burns. Head Hurlers also carry swords for use in close combat should this be necessary.

Head hurlers, however, also show little regard for their own danger and are not above rushing into combat without orders.

Onagers & Heavy Onagers
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/beansidhe06-onagers.jpg

Spear Warband
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/beansidhe03-spearwomen.jpg
Spear Warbands are comprised of women armed with the heavy spears that give them their name and protected with large body shields. They are taught to maintain a rigid shield wall in battle, and can be expected to hold it against most opponents, most especially cavalry. However, they lack the discipline of more professional troops and cannot be expected to win battles without the support of heavier troops.

The women of a spear warband are one of the most basic components of the Bean Sidhe military. Rather than being members of the warriour aristocracy, these women are common members of society who have taken up arms in service of the state. In Amazon society all women serve a mandatory term of service in the military when they come of age. During this time they both learn the craft of a soldier and serve as a standing army.

Swordswomen
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/beansidhe18-swordswomen.jpg
As their name implies, Swordswomen carry the longswords characteristic of the Bean Sidhe and Celts, which they wield to deadly effect. They wear shirts of good quality mail and open-faced steel helmets for protection. They are disciplined fighters, but only to a certain point. After that their sense of honour and bravery can make them eager to get into any fray and distinguish themselves.

A step above the militia Spear Warbands, Swordswomen are the lowest rung of the Bean Sidhe warriour aristocracy. They are women who have completed their mandatory service and continued on in that role. They are eager for battle, as it is only through the shedding of blood that they can prove their worth as warriours and advance themselves to positions in the Fianna, or even a general's personal bodyguard.

Fianna
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/beansidhe19-fianna.jpg
Armed with the powerful longswords of the Bean Sidhe, the Fianna are extremely dangerous infantrywomen who have a surprise for unsuspecting foes. They also carry powerful javelins which they throw before coming to grips with their enemy. Protected by mail of the best quality, oval body shields, steel helmets, and greaves, they are well able to stand firm in a protracted melee against any foe. The are quite simply the anvil upon which the enemies of the Bean Sidhe are crushed.

The Fianna are the rock solid foundation of the Bean Sidhe military, a professional force of women who do nothing but train for war and fight when called upon. They come from the upper classes, or are women of the lower classes who have gained elevated status by distinguishing themselves in action as Spearwomen or common Swordswomen. Their motto is: "Purity in our hearts. Strength in our hands. Action to match our words." For them honor and service is everything.

Chosen Fianna
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/beansidhe04-chosenfianna.jpg
Armed with the great blades as long as a woman is tall, Chosen Fianna are the elite of the elite, the most powerful women in the Bean Sidhe military. Their greatswords are so large that they require both hands to wield, and are etched with symbols that are said to be magical in nature. Some even whisper that these blades are forged by Brigit herself, and quenched in human blood so that they will acquire a taste for it. Others say that it is the Morrigan who does the forging, for it is her insatiable thirst for death which the mighty swords serve. As one can imagine, these women inspire terror within all enemies who catch sight of them.

Along with their terrible weapons, the Chosen Fianna are armoured with the finest mail available, including pieces of solid plate along their shoulders, as well as greaves and sturdy helms. As both their hands are required to wield their massive swords, they have slung their round shields across their backs. In short, they are armoured from head to toe.

Warhounds
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/beansidhe16-wardogs.jpg
Warhounds are bred for a savage nature and great size, but then hunting men is only a little more dangerous than hunting wild boar! The beasts are muscular and powerful. Originally bred for hunting large prey, they are now trained to hunt and attack men. Warhounds are usually unleashed on an enemy to break a line and unnerve opponents. Few men are able to stand steadily in the face of a snarling and partially-starved beast. The dogs are trained to bite and hold on, dragging down their human targets, and hamstringing horses.

Their handlers are brave, foolhardy and not easily intimidated: many have fingers, hands or even chunks of limbs missing!

Bean Sidhe Cavalry
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/beansidhe15-beansidhecavalry.jpg
Bean Sidhe Cavalry are javelin-armed horsewomen who can also fight hand-to-hand - a potent combination in one force! They wear mail armour and carry shields and swords so that they can close with opponents and fight when the situation requires.

Light Chariots
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/beansidhe08-lightchariots.jpg
Light chariots are very fast, very noisy and, when used in large numbers, quite intimidating. They combine the swiftness of cavalry with the long-range power of archers. The drivers concentrate on controlling the chariots, while their passengers fire arrow after arrow into the target. They can also simply charge into an enemy, perform the same scouting duties as cavalry, harass enemies with missiles and may even be worth sacrificing to break a previously unyielding enemy line. They can also be very effective in pursuing fleeing foes.

Heavy Chariots
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/beansidhe12-heavychariots.jpg
Heavy chariots are an elite in Bean Sidhe armies. They are shock troops, relying on speed and shock to break enemy formations. Every woman carries a fine sword and is equipped with a good mail armour, while their chariots are pulled by two horses.

They perform the same function as heavy cavalry, charging home to cause casualties before wheeling away to launch a fresh attack. Any infantry foolish enough to stand in the way are ridden down, hacked to pieces by the rider!

Screechers
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/beansidhe17-screechers.jpg
Priestesses of the Morrigan, these women are clad in sturdy mail shirts and cloaks of ravens feathers for protection. They carry great sickles with with to reap their prey. However, they are best known for not their fighting ability, but rather for the terror which their unearthly wailing inspires within the enemies of the Bean Sidhe. It is said that to hear their cry means death. Typically they will stand behind the main battle line and send their entreaties to their dark goddess while the battle rages around them.

Berserkers
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/beansidhe22-berserkers.jpg
Berserkers are Amazons who have so dedicated themselves to the Morrigan that see themselves as being her own personal agents of death in this world. They are the ravens of the battlefield, choosing who lives and dies and carrying their souls away with them.

Early Bodyguard & Captain
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/beansidhe24-earlybodyguard.jpg

Late Bodyguard
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/atw/beansidhe13-latebodyguard.jpg
This general has a bodyguard of loyal heavily armoured cavalry to accompany her onto the field. Like all general's guards, this unit is best committed to the fight at the point of crisis, when the general's inspirational leadership and the combat power of her women can tip the balance.

Adult Warning
=========
Caution: This mod contains female nudity depicted in ancient combat. If you are precluded by the law to view such content (under the age of 18 in most areas, for example), please refrain from accessing the mod.

Rather than posting the link everywhere, here is the thread to access the download,

or you can search for Amazon Total War Reignited Beta in TWCenter.

Attached below is the Read-Me file which is part of the download zip.

===============================================================
Amazon Total War - Reignited
Version 1.01 Beta
For Barbarian Invasion 1.6 or later
Latest bug fix:
- reported by Spartan198 with a crash entering the strat screen because the model file has reference to amazon cas file over at the BI/data folder
- reported by chrisb for erroneous installation links in this document
- script now functions for all three intended factions with no warning side-effects.

:::::::::::::::::::: MAJOR CHANGES ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
The new Amazon Total War - Reignited is a mod based on Subrosa Florens as well as Ares7667's Amazon Total War Mod.
Key Differences are (Please read throught the entire description before installation)

- This mod contains female nudity, if the law of your location prohibits you as an individual from viewing such content for whatever reasons (being under age of 18 in most areas, for example), please refraining from installing or playing this mod.
By installing this mod, the user acknowledges that he (or she) alone is legally responsible for the use and the consequences of its use.
- The Reignited mod is less fantasy based, most Amazon factions and locations are based more on archeology and data extrapolated from current anthropological theories.
- This mod attemps at establishing a relationship between the animation-skin (the textures) of the units with the specific unit's cost. The unit cost is much more in line with the equipment and training of the combat units. Wherever possible, there is explanation to list the equipment+training to show their relationship with cost.
- To bring recruitment in line with the community infrastructure, many of the units have been re-skinned, and the light units are either using animal pelts as clothing, or their clothing reduced to reflect cost and time required to recruit such units.
- Use of iron implements are reduced, and most units are bronze alloy armored. Units using iron have both high maintenance cost as well as high procurement cost.
This reflects the fact that iron object rust away very easily and must be constantly maintained. It also requires different furnace technology to produce which is more hazardous than bronze alloy.
Bronze alloy (Beryllium Copper, for example) can achieve 90% of the hardness of the best moden steel, at fraction of the cost at manufacturing.
- Chain mail armors used to be depicted in previous RTW mods as cheap alternative to plate mail armor. Well, it is far from being true. Chain mail is both exhorbitantly expensive to produce and highly effective.
Therefore, use of Chain mail in this mod has been greatly curtailed, and it is mostly used as limb armor, unless the factions are Romans, Carthage, or Armenia.
- Use of other missile weapons have been deployed.
- Game has been kept more interesting as each Amazon faction has their own perils to overcome.
- Egypt is portrayed as Ptolemaic, not as ancient Egyptian as in the original RTW game. The officers and some units are Greeks, mixed with local Egyptian levy units.
The cards for generals as well as diplomat remained Egytian, as it is customary for the Ptolemaic rulers to retain dual cultural identities.

::::::::::::::::::::The Basics::::::::::::::::::::

Amazon Total War is a conversion for Rome Total war version 1.5 or Barbarian Invasion version 1.6. It uses the mod:switch option, so it will not interfere with any of your original game files. Be sure you apply it to a clean install of RTW, as you may experience ctd's when entering battles if not.

::::::::::::::::::::Overview::::::::::::::::::::

ATW - Reignited re-structured the four Amazon factions in the game:

Amazonia, still remains as Amazonia
Valkyrja, renamed Thyssa Amazons
the Bean Sidhe, renamed Geothe Amazons
the Gorgons. renamed Libyan Amazons

"...The Amazon Federations, who for milleniums have been safeguarding the Caucasus Gates and the Asia Minor to potect the Europa Ecumene from beeing destroyed by barbarians, had finally collapsed, thanks in no small measure to the Dorian intrigue. Centuries later, a minority still uphold their secret code and teaching. Others have fell into decadence and formed into their own petty fiefdom in the Northern Plains, where they call themselves the Thyssagetae. Still, others have settled in Themiskyra and gave the Dorian Greeks some paybacks from time to time. The nimble ones trekked back to Libya, a place centuries later is known to the Romans as Africa...."

These still belong to a new culture, that of the Amazons, with new units, generals, entourage, etc.
All diplomats, assassins, and spies are now females with correct strat animation.
In general, the current mod makes them less Greek and more Phrygian or Central-Asians/Asia-Minor of their time, which means, by definition, they are more blonde, or red haired, with light color eyes.
For they are the progenitors of many modern European people. This is the time when the Goths, the Alans, the Sarmatians have not migrated to Europe yet.

The Amazon frontier units are available to the most of their neighboring factions.
Celts,
Gaul - Finnic Amazon Archers, both mounted and dismounted.

Macedon - Geothe mounted and dismounted brigandine archers

German
Thrace,
Armenia,
Parthia - Thyssa Amazon Frontier Horse Archers

Thrace,
Seleucid- Mounted Amazon Heavy Cavalry

With very few exceptions, most Amazonian elites units are equestrian.
Here are the categories of units in the Amazon ranks:

Halberd units - both mounted and dismounted.
militia warband
militia hoplite - female instead of male long shield warband
skirmisher - armed with long javelins
peltasts - armed with javelins, swords, and wicker pelta shield.
foot archers - armed with sword, composite bow or mano-ballista, some with shield.
horse archers - same as foot archers, except mounted on horseback with extreme weight limitations.
brigandine - same as foot/horse archers, with brigandine armors and if mounted, with medium horses

double bow - double cocked, double limbs bow with two bow strings to shoot a missile to longer range, also allows a petite warrior to shoot at long distance
mano-ballista - precursor of man-portable crossbow, with the difference of a torsion spring instead of a limb-spring. With some game engine animation limitation, it was supposed to be cocked with the rider resting her 'bow' on her the sole of one of her shoes and with the hand(s) pull the string to be cocked and ready to shoot.

iron cased lead - iron casing filled with molten lead, used by faction with less wood and lathing technology to make straight arrow shaft.
sacred fire missile- can be used either as an ancient version of grenade, or shoot off a mano-ballista, or double-bow, like a rifle grenade launcher.

As it is from the previous Amazon TW Mod, the original game map has been modified by the inclusion of 34 new territories.
Most of them are located in North Africa, the Steppe, and the mountains of Armenia.
As in Amazon TW 3.0c, Scythia has been moved to its more historically accurate starting position in the Crimea and lower Ukraine.
Scythia has also undergone some change in its unit roster, now having many more infantry units of better quality than before.
This reflects the effects of their having become partially sedentary at the time the game begins.
Every Barbarian faction now has a 4th tier of development. All factions now have a Law temple.
There are many new units, including Onagers for all Barbarians. Maiden Axes have been added to Britannia and Gaul from ATW 3.0c release.
Chosen Slingers added to Britannia, Carthage, and Iberia.
Thrace has had a dramatic make-over as well, gaining new units such as Thracian Peltasts, Thracian Infantry, and Thracian Nobles, new temples such as to Sabazios and Kotys, and more.
All Amazon factions can now get Elephant troops, as can the Sarmatians, this only happens when their culture is almost fully developed.

::::::::::::::::::::Take Note!::::::::::::::::::::

Voice and Speech:
=================

As in previous Amazon TW mod, the pre-battle speeches of the Amazons have been disabled.

Four Season Turns:
==================
The game uses Maadral's Multi-Season script. But it has been integrated to the game script. So if you have been using his multi-season script, you can not re-generate the season script on this mod, doing so will cause fatal error in the mod.

Some more background and facets of Amazon: Total War - Reignited

The mod depicting the time around 270BC (same is RTW), but it shows the uprising of the Amazon factions after centuries of patriarchal encroachment. Story basically tells the Amazon Federation originally organized by one secret sect of Artemis with Camilla as its revered head-priestess centuries ago has been linking matriarchal communities to protect each other from the invasion, the raid, the pillage, or other encroahments from the so-called hero-quests.

After the death of Alexander in 323BC, the Amazon factions finally realized that it is now or never to throw down the yoke imposed by men. So they have been quietly preparing for that eventuality for the past half a century.

When finally at the time of 270BC, news broke out that the Gaulic King Brennus has invaded Greek Peninsula and had won resounding victories. And Carthage, which is founded by Queen Diddo, a formal Amazon Priestess, is inciting war between the Romans and Pyrrhus, king of Epirus. The die is cast for the Amazons to declare to the world who they truly are...

Equipment Based on more Logical Anthropological Extrapolation

The mod also try to be more realistic on unit procurement cost regarding equipment and infra-structure. And attempt to show a direct relationship of the unit's cost vs. the unit's texture.

A summary is listed below:

1. For 270BC, clothing is very expensive as well as time consuming to fabricate, so only the rich, mercenary, elite, patrician, or aristocratic units have more properly garmented attires. Light units, barbarian units, as well as the rebel units are lessly so. And if possible, they are dressed in animal pelts, or without dress.

one example of the Thracian Peltast by Andronicus is shown below:
https://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n597/string_muse/RenditionofThacianPeltastintypicalpre-ATWReignitedMod.jpg

and here is the Amazon Re-ignited Rendition of the same unit

https://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n597/string_muse/RenditionofThracianPeltastinATW-Reignitedmod.jpg

2. Many previous mods portray chain mail as a secondary armor to plate mail armor. and cheaper one to procure. Well, in reality this is completely false. Chain mail is exorbitantly expensive to produce in 270BC. So in the Reignited mod, only the Romans, the Carthaginians, the Armenians have units featuring full chain mail armored units. Other factions only has chain mails armor suit for VIPs or aristocratic units.

Here is a previous Amazon TW example, many mods share similar trend:

https://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n597/string_muse/AmazonLongSword_3_0.jpg

Here is an Amazon TW Re-ignited equivalent:
https://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n597/string_muse/ATWReignitedLongsword.jpg

Notice the armor is not a perfect fit, as none of the armory issued armors should be. As a matter of fact, unless the armor is custom tailored, then it should not be a snug fit. In most cases, custom tailored armored should only be afforded by aristocratic units.

And here is an example of the Amazon Noble Maiden, in snug fit lamellar armor suit:

https://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n597/string_muse/jyazii_noble_maiden_INFO.jpg

3. Iron armor equipped units have both high maintenance and procurement cost. Only Romans, the Carthaginians/Iberians, the Gauls, the Armenians have units with complete iron equipment, with iron armor, helmet, and so on. Other factions only use iron for missile (arrow head), spearhead, sword blade, or helmets. Iron rust rather quickly, so it is a full time work to maintain the full suit of armor, therefore the procurement cost as well as the upkeep cost is increased to reflect that overhead.

4. Most line fighting units are only armored frontally, the old thinking was that the less a unit is protected on their back, the less likely they would turn tails and run away from the fight.

Changes and specification in 6.0j Patch 1

Corrected CTD when player faction battle against the Libyan Amazon Horde.
Added Steppe Axemen and Axe Cavalry
Updated Correct Text for Libyan Amazon

Changes and specification in 6.0j

Post-Beta

1. Added Amazon Agent's ability to recruit/raise own faction's army in certain enemy territories where there are Amazon communities.
2. new caro-ballistae crew animation and skin
3. new Sarmatian Virgin Cavalry animation and skin
4. corrected Sarmatian "cataphract" armor for caro-ballistae, scale armors are actually made of tile sliced from horse/ox hoofs which was attached to the fowler netting, not linked metal plates.
5. re-adjusted Amazon unit size. This is trying to deploy the decimal system for most unit size configurations. The recommended unit size is the highest setting.
6. removed load screen files to free up more memory, because there about 60 new event monitors running in the script, reducing the load screen files compensates for the memory loss.
7. fixed the minor prize re-entrant issue.
8. Libyan CTD reported by Satapatiš
9. New Armenic Peltast Animation and skin
10. New Geothe Foot Archer unit size.
11. New Thyssagetae Amazon Lesser General Animation
12. Trimmed the download file size by 15%

Corrected 6.0j Beta bugs

1. missing Amazon Militia Horse Archer Unit Info file.

4. Corrected Thyssa Heavy Lancer which used incorrect animation of a demi-lancer.
5. New skin for Libyan Militia Demi-lancer with corrected animation
6. The 6.0J release also corrected Libyan CTD when viewing of the settlement in battlemap.

6.0j Pre-Beta Features

- added minor bonus if certain important cities are captured.
- New BUM transformed light units mainly for the Scythians.
.New Scythian Head Hunting Maiden unit, now taking the form of semi-armored horse archer unit mounted on fast horse.
.New Scythian Horde units
.New Scythian Virgin Archers
.New Sarmatian Virgin Cavalry Skin
- brand new Amazon Militia Archers
- brand new Amazon Militia Horse Archers animation and skins
- new Amazon Longbow Archers,
- new Amazon Companion Horse Archers animation and skins.
- The number of warriors in advanced tech units have been reduced.
- New animation for Libyan Heavy Cavalry
- All male light horse units are now mounting medium horses instead.
- thoroughbred horse as tradable commodity, and units with race horse can only be raised in the regions where the thoroughbred horses are available. The exception being if the region has circus maximus or higher equestrian sports facility.
- 6.0j also tries to refine the previous BUM concept detail regarding attire.
The change is, female light units does not mean it has to be without clothing. It is true for mounted light horse units because any extra weight would increase the load, and for the light horse mount, it is of paramount consideration to keep the weight to a minimum. But the foot units do not have to have the same weight restriction. So for the Scythian changes, some of non-combat oriented light foot units have animal pelt as their attires. There will be no uniform because according to the BUM principles, the cost would be prohibitive. So in a way this is a logical extension to the Thracian Peltast unit change, in which instead of wearing fabricated garment as in the original RTW, it has animal pelt as the attire. With the animal pelt as the unit attire, the cost is justified, otherwise it is not. Still, for CQC light units equipped with shields, many of the units will have naked upper torso and limbs, because this is the only way to guarantee free movement during combat and field maneuver.

Changes and specification in 6.0i
New Amazon Pathfinder units for Geothe and Amazonia.
New Amazonia Patrician Horse Archer skin.
This completes the storyline for the Amazon units for 6.0 series, as we complete the BUM changes for other factions (German and Celts, for example), the objectives for 6.0 releases would be met.
6.0i with patch also repair the CTD reported by "Professor Chaos67"
The download sequence is the same as normal mod release, no special steps required.
6.0i patch 2 has
-new Amazon Horse Archer for Corinth (Greek Cities),
-new text for 6.0i units,
-and expanded Amazon characters roster which doubles the names library.
6.0i patch 3 has
-revamped Amazon Xiphos Cohort skins for all factions that can recruit Xiphos Cohort.
-new Pathfinder animatiion to correct secondary weapon problem.
-Re-adjusted Limigantes Archer attributes
-Female icons for agents, finally.
-Horse as tradable commodity
-Re-hashed Amazon Character Gallery with added pictures

Changes and specification in 6.0h
The main focus on the "H" release is trying to get Parthia to conform to the Balanced Unit Modeling (or B.U.M) principles.
New Parthian Horse Archer skins, and no more Persian rider for Parthian cavalry.
and there are many new parthian unit skins.

Other new units:

Libyan Amazon Foot Archers
Greek City States Armored Amazon Horse Archer Mercenary

Correction and Alterations:

Geothe Xiphos Cohort now uses thermite fire jar instead of leadened darts (plumbata) for missiles.
Greek Rebel units had Macedonian officer, it is now corrected.
Libyan Amazon had standard bearer wearing bronze armor although almost all libyan Amazon units are iron-armored.
number of missile reloads have been re-evaluated.
new Darth Mod fix parameters refined to be even better.
The old Libyan Amazon Archers are renamed Amazon Barber Archers.

Changes and specification in 6.0e-6.0g

- Emergency patch to repair Parthian Cataphract Missing officer skin file CTD, as reported by Resef.
- added load screen from RSII battlefield landscape.

- fixes for errors reported by Mark Centurion
- added standard bearer for Barbarian.
- added officers for all units except horde, merc, and rebels.
- re-skinned Armenic light horse archer
- more improved Darth Vader Foot Missile Bug parameters. AI is much more aggressive on the battlefield now.

Changes and specification in 6.0d
- Renamed titles and units to be more consistent with the storyline and their functionality.
for example, the head of Geothe Amazon is now Priestess Marshal, as the Geothe is an Artemis/Camilla Sect Theocracy.
The Gladiatus Cohort is now renamed, Xiphos Plumbatarii to indicated that they use the Xiphos style sword with shield, and they throw leadened darts using pole sling.
- New Armenian Units
~ Armenic Guard Immortal
~ Armenic Halberdier
~ Armenic Amazon Elite Horse Archer
~ Armenic Amazon Xiphos Legion
~ armored conscripted spearmen with pole sling throwing stones
~ Armenic Heavy Cavalry with pole-sling throwing leadened darts
~ Armenic Light Lancer
~ re-skinned Armenic Legion
~ re-skinned Armenic Archer
~ re-skinned Armenic Noble Maiden
~ Armenic Standard Bearer
~ new Armenic officer and general
~ new Armenic officer and general on strat map

- Until the first quest is completed, Armenian faction units mostly have the following characteristcs:
a. Their units are the best equipped, and almost exclusively all iron armored
b. They are awfully expensive, both in recruitment and upkeep.
c. They have the best equestrian mounts of any factions.

- New Armenian faction color, flag, and standard bearer, based on Armenian Artaxiad Dynasty flag
- Fine tuned Armenian Quests again to be more playable and interesting.
- Corrected the Amazon sword women animation issues.
- Re-factored offense points for Amazon and Armenic units using mini-leadened-bolts (plumbata)

- Roman remains Purple as Spartan198 suggested
- re-skinned Amazon Libyan units to be more Eurasian than African.
- New Amazon Cavalry of the Line Animation and skins.
- New Geothe Amazon Lanciarii Animation and skins.
- New light unit skins for most amazon archers, militia axes, militia cavalry.
- use the newly tested result from Darth Vader Foot Missile Bug parameters to enhance the AI's battlefield tactics.
- corrected mercenary units missing skins errors.
- new adjusted skins to make the Amazon unit more photo-like.
- new Amazon unit .cas files
- new sprite files as well as more sprite changes for existing files. This is by no means a completed task, but I am glad we finally have test methodology in place.
- Changes to give peasant and light units more ragged look, in keeping with the Balanced Unit Modeling principle (aka Parthian Shot's 6 Laws).
- Because the above changes in light units will make unit identification more difficult (Amazon TW has the banner turned off to make the battle more realistic), each peasant unit as well as light unit is given a standard bearer for easier unit identification on the battlefield.
- Add happiness points for Amazon cult temple even if some non-Amazon factions own the territory.
