View Full Version : Minor nations playable?

Will this be possible without modding tools?

Hmmmm. I think you will need to conquer them to play them.

Cecil XIX

Really? That'd be quite a relief.

pevergreen
03-05-2009, 04:28
No, they are NOT playable.

There is currently no way to mod this game.

Indeed, from what I've been reading it appears as if modding the game won't be as stright forward as the demo might of suggested. It seems the old unpacker for the demo still works, you just have to change some things in the Python, but as to making other nations playable; from what I'm reading if you do manage to open up the pack files, the files which might hold this information don't appear to be either in plain text or xml so we might have to wait untill we get the SDK to really crack the potential of the game wide open.

pevergreen
03-05-2009, 05:48
Correct, and some changes are being over-ridden in the patch.pack files. :laugh4:

Wait, CA is making it hard for us to mod the game?

Blasphemy!

pevergreen
03-05-2009, 10:50
Good news: I have the unpacked files and am looking into it. Don't expect anything though. Most of the files can't be read by us yet.

edit: well, that didnt work. Its deleted over half of my .pack files.

Thankfully I backed up the game on another computer. Off to copy them over.

Mailman653

I read that if you allow Steam to check the integrity of the files, it fixes everything, you don't have to do a re-install.

pevergreen
03-05-2009, 16:15
No, it literally deleted over half my .pack files off my hard drive. I just copied them over and did a minor fix from disc, its all good.

I have conquered several minor factions and they do not appear as playable on the main campaign window yet. Perhaps after I have completed a campaign they may show up, I have taken all the regions required to complete the short campaign as Prussia, but I have to hold them until 1750. Considering I have, according to Steam, played ETW for 19 hours in three days :dizzy2:, and am only at 1727 then it might take me a while to find out.

pevergreen
03-05-2009, 16:48
You don't get them. Show me anywhere it has said that.

They are minor factions for a reason.

Alexander the Pretty Good
03-05-2009, 18:17
Because CA is lazy? I really can't see a reason. Just put a disclaimer up if you're afraid noobs are going to play them and complain...

CA did hint in a couple of interviews that modders would unlock the minor factions. It will be possible eventually, even if it isn't at the moment.

I am struggling to appreciate as to why they have done this. I was looking forward to conquering the world as Georgia.

I think it's because they will be releasing modding tools sometime soon.

Well then can't wait for them hopefully they'll have a map editor as i find the map utterly horrible.i'll have to add some 50 provinces at least.

03-06-2009, 10:37
It's good that we're all calm about this, have a look at some of TWC's threads about modding and the're full of people ranting about it and bashing CA.

They probably will release modding tools, I heard that CA said that it will only take a simple edit though don't ask me for sources because I'm only going on what some people at TWC have said.

pevergreen
03-06-2009, 11:37
Although true lenin, you just have to pay attention to a few posters.

Theres an incredible new unpacker out, we can hex edit unit stats.

But trust me, don't even THINK about CA bashing. There may not be strict rules about it, but I got my fill when I signed up at the M2TW launch.

As for those who just want a bigger map, leave it to me! When mod tools come out, I'm stopping play and hitting the maps.

Common misconception is that CA said they would make it easier to mod. They said we could mod more but made no comment on difficulty.

We've discovered already we can mod a lot more, we just can't yet.

What we really need is alpaca over here doing his work.

They did say unlocking the minor factions was a simple and easy change. I'm guessing we just need the mod tools to do it. Can't be much simpler than desc_strat.

lenin96
03-06-2009, 14:21
Yes I know, CA makes me annoyed some times. I heard about the unpacker, there's a lot of people trying to unlock factions and I think they might do it by the end of next week.:2thumbsup:

Is alpaca still around pevergreen? I remember working with him on MA many moons ago, great modder!

As for CA bashing, its easy for people to forget that they are given time scales to work within, which is why we get the whole misconception of "unfinished", it is unfinished in CA's eyes yes, but not their publishers, its why games get patched to the high heavens, happens with all games companies. CA are by far one of the most "community friendly" companies I have seen, alot don't bother posting anything but patch threads and news updates, they rarely interact, so the fact CA does is very nice to see.

pevergreen
03-06-2009, 15:18
alpaca released the unpacker and lua editor for the demo. Hes around at the TWC at least.

The new unpacker is vastly superior though.
Even so, we still can't do anything.

I am getting all nostalgic now, I still think it was a great shame we never got MA or II out, it had potential.

So far it seems the bugs to the mod is the fow covering up your starting location and emergent factions crashing the game. The first picture is the 13 colonies, not the US.

That file worked, but it seemed to cause significant slowdown in the game.

Also, starting without a school sucks.

I think he is an appointed minister or something, the colonies start as a protectorate. I messed up my game doing something so I had to reinstall so I haven't had a chance to really play with the colonies to see what limits or changes it has, as opposed to being the US (independent nation).

Yeah Portugal!! :couch: And we have a colony in India (Goa)! And they speak Portuguese in the Campaign! CA and the modders rock! :thrasher:

Crashes when a faction emerges? GGGG

03-08-2009, 22:16
Thank goodness. I was afraid that once I got the game I would not be able to play as the Safavids or Mughals. Seriously why would they have the darn Marathas instead of Mughals? And having the Ottomans without their 2 major Islamic rivals is madness.

Mailman653

Blah...my colonies campaign freezes after 1707, it gets stuck on Britain, waited up to ten minutes and its just permintely stuck there, at least it lets me press esc and load or exit. Too bad, I was getting into building my empire from scratch as opposed to the last chapter of the RtI campaign and having things all laid out already.

:wall:

Malkut

That seems to happen when you're playing a protectorate.

I think someone will have to remove the mission where your parent country absorbs you, for them to be playable.

If that's the problem, then you could just take those regions first right?

I don't think that would complete the mission. Britain needs to capture Quebec and the Cherokee lands, not America.

Also, the Colonies aren't really in a position to attack France by 1707. They would be massacred.

I don't think that would complete the mission.

No, but it would make it impossible for Britain to the mission, which sounded like it was causing the crash as your faction was then absorbed into the UK.

Malkut
03-10-2009, 03:21
It's not completing the mission that causes it to crash, it's the existence of the mission.

I think. We'd have to know how to disable it to know for sure.

As for why links do not work, links to the other major unofficial Total War fansite are being wordfiltered out at the moment.

It should be removed soon.

Apparently there's an issue with Fog Of War though, so i'm gonna pass for now...

A question about modding, im trying to figure out the startpos.esf file but cant find anything useful for now, using the UltraEdit hex editor, should i try with a different editing software or just give up by the time someone(or CA) releases a good modding tool)?

Its a bit frustrating when u see a wall of
˙Š®»˙¬ą˙Ž°Ľ˙łŔ˙†#ş˙wš§˙~ˇŻ˙®Ľ˙Ź·Ä˙Ś´Á˙…#Ľ˙„Şą˙§µ˙„¬ş
˙ŠłÁ˙ˆŻľ˙ˆ°ż˙Ž¸Ç˙‘˝Ě˙˝Í˙şĘ˙Ś¶Ĺ˙‡±Ŕ˙ˆ

Ę×˙˜»Č˙ŠłĹ˙‹·Ę˙‹·Ę˙‹·Ç˙ˆłĂ˙†#Ľ˙ƒ©ą˙‚©ą˙‚Şş˙˜şÇ˙˘ÂÎ˙ĄÇÓ & dont have a clue what it stands for.

pevergreen
03-11-2009, 09:50
You shouldnt see that in a hex editor, you should see bytes.

That must be opening it in textpad form or something man, you would see

00 03 03 00 F3 00 05 00 07 00 03 05 etc

KaLiMeRo168
03-11-2009, 10:11
doh stupid me, i have bytes on the left & ascii on the right, should mention that before:oops:
Still its a mystery to me, like im in the Egyptian Pyramids & watching the hieroglyphs :o.

I miss so much the old good descr_strat.

Dradem
03-11-2009, 10:25
KaLiMeRo168 I think you're opening it wrong, as pevergreen said it should be in bytes (actualy hex from 0 to F), you can mod in the minor faction without much problems, in the file you'll see in the transalation part for example
m.o.r.o.c.c.o..... in hex this is 6D 00 6F 00 72 00 6f 00 63 00 63 00 6F 00 01 00 01 00
the last . or 00 needs to be changed to 01

so you'll get 6D 00 6F 00 72 00 6f 00 63 00 63 00 6F 00 01 00 01 01

there is a problem with the Fog of war I'm checking trough the diffrent country's to check if there is a clue but nothing found :wall: but in some cases to save the game and then go back to it will solve this problem.

There is also an other problem that for some factions there are no victory conditions but I think there are already some tips to get that out but didn't check this yet.

to busy looking for the fog of war sometimes its a bit much ( i typed morocco from the top of my head :help:)

Now back to work for a bit :whip:

Me too. There is another mod that completly removes the fog of war from the entire map. I am going to wait though because modders are just getting started, and many mods will overwrite vanilla files. I may even shelf the game for a few months untill patches and mods get the kinks worked out. This game has potential, but it was released in a very bad state.
