View Full Version : Question 2: Should we hide post counts of all users?

Sir Kuma of The Org

Q2. Should we hide post counts of all users? (technically the posts will be counted but are just hidden from everyones view).

Please stay on subject, thanks!

Definitely, It only encourages spamming. Most people seem to think a high post count makes them 'Vets' and 'Elite' as so many people here think they are...

Disagree Kokeno-san.

Sometimes the post count points to people on the ball in the forums and people to ask questions of. Over time you get used to who does what. And the spammers tend to be quite polite and not uptight... just kids being kids.

And in all honesty some of the best participents have spammed from time to time. Although I do draw a line of doing that in the History forum, thats like letting your dog leave a turd on someones doorstep... you know who you are and you need to do twenty hail Gah!s young man with the pointy ear fetish.

i dont really see much point in this one. what problem are we trying to handle with hiding post counts? seems frivolous to me. just leave it like it is. i like knowing my count.

GAH! (and HAH! of course). Post count immaterial to me. Within 2 days here, I had no trouble distinguishing 'real' posters from 'LoL' 'me too' 'ditto' posters. It's all about content.

For most newbies drawn to purchase a realtime strategy game set in the middle ages, then to travel inevitably to its .com site, and click from there to .Org, click "forums", lurk a bit, then register so they can speak...my guess is that they'll be able to discriminate as well.

Keep it, kill it - no matter.

What Kukri said.

If we keep it can we have it in Roman numerals? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

Whats the fuss all about? Its only a number, which represents your contributions to the community so a high post count in most cased would mean your are a good contributor to the gaming community. Things like that should be known,

Spam is a good contribution?

I don't think hiding the post counts will stop the spamming.

Compromise would be to hide postcounts but to have more icons (for every incrementation of a 100 or so).

But this is the main reason people spam, to get a high post count. Why else would people spam?

Just hides Miths, he seems to be the only one who spams to increase his post count http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Also, make him a permanent ronin http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Nah, seriously though, i think its probably best to leave it as it is, this place doesnt have a spam problem...

Anyoen who wants a spam picture they can ask me, I've got one of a tin of spam.....

Anyway, someone should make an embarrassing pic and title for spammers.... Maybe a baby picture of Tera, that under your name will make you a laughing stock.

That'd be so cool!

I've spammed enough to earn it!

I personally think that the SimHQ method would be the best route to follow.

The post counts aren't shown under the avatar, but rather simply as topic in the user profile.
That way, those that care have a way of seeing their count, without it being visible to all and the posts can stand on merit and content, might even discourage spamming..... *nah* http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

So we have three choices:

1. Hide it completely;
2. Hide it, but viewable in profile;
3. Don't hide it at all.

Perhaps a vote?

For me I couldn't care less which we do; so I say 3, keep it the same.

don't hide it. It has never been a problem up till when we have started to talk about it. So just leave it be.

Also I like to know how many posts I have made tells me how much of this community I am. The more posts I make(nonspam) the better it is for me.

Removing it gives Toda/Dipsy nothing to live for http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

If no one truely cares about their post ocunt then why not hide it? and if they think it shows what they have contributed to the community, as a few people said, it's very easy to distinguish the 'spammers' from the people that post stuff with acctual useful information. I just don't see why we need a postcount...as Lord Ted said, it's just a number next to your name.

Well it's gonna stay visible if I'm not mistaken. I maybe wrong but things are looking that way.

Hmmm. Mith - It's taken you a matter of weeks to take a more mature view on things. Question: have you started work/education in the last few weeks, limited your time online?

on-topic: keep things as they are and take that ugly pink stuff off my head! it simply does not do for the baptist (note: that doesn't mean that i want a religious icon!)

thx
