It is with a heavy heart that I must announce that I will no longer be updating or adding to this mod. It was a very tough and difficult decision that was not made on a whim.

After reviewing several other Battlefield music mods and the advances they have taken in presenting the real marches played by real drum and fifers, it made my mod and all my future endeavors obsolete, as I feel nothing can compete with real instrumentation vs. synthesized. The offerings of Rsty Bloodnok, and La-De-Da-Gnr-Graham are excellent and a big thank you to them for their great mods and making the Drum and Fife of the era a reality!

It was a great run on this mod. This is one amazing community and I say thank you to everyone who has supported me and my mod over the last 2 to 3 months. Take care everyone! I might return in the future when I have more time to work on this.

Megapack - I hope this finished uploading because my puters browser decided it was time for me to get off the net and crashed. So any problems let me know! This mega pack includes everything I have released for the mod and I included the Hohenfriedberger Marsch in its original Stereo Format as I wrote and recorded it. The process to include music into empire requires you to convert down to Mono, which kind of kills the tracks and makes them seem flat. Enjoy!

Link 2 Megapack: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=8K8IOGE7

***Also as a thank you I will finish up the Preobrazhensky March and will post it here for download when it is completed.***

*NEW 5/28* - Very tiny Sample of the Preobrazhensky March - (Please note this is a small sample of a work in progress. It is of a few seconds of the actual march. I have to go through note by note and convert the march to a drum and fife style. It may take a while, hopefully the results will be worth it.)

Ok last one for a few days till I can finish working on all the other packs for release. This one is generic and should fit ALL factions, it has no fife, just drums so your digital soldiers have something better to march to than that weak drumroll that came with the game. Enjoy

It was written, played, recorded and produced by me in my studio. I hope you enjoy it as much as I had making it. Comments and critics are most welcome and appreciated!:beam:

@therifleman - you need to open the rar/zip up with Winrar. Unzip it / Unrar it, then look for the installation text file in the folders of the mod you unzip/unrared- it explains what you need to do in order to install the field music. BE WARNED.. Please make a backup of your sounds pack that is going to be modified. That way you can revert back in case you mess something up. Enjoy! :beam:

This is a new post for my mod as the other thread was filled with a ton of posts and my links were getting lost and required people to sift through pages of text. Here below are the links to my current mod files. I will be changing some of the songs to reflect the improvement in the sound of the audio and I will let you know which file was updated.

***PLEASE MAKE A BACK UP OF YOUR "SOUNDS_MUSIC.PACK" BEFORE DOING ANYTHING!***

You can't go around a moving ship banging a drum. That's nigh-impossible. No, it is a much better idea to model and skin a rapper onto the ships. He can yell loud, and doesn't need steady ground to go about shouting his rhymes, making funny hand gestures, and showing off his gold teeth.

Excellent work with all the songs, although I must say, the Hohenfrieberger March is my absolute favourite. Ever since watching Barry Lyndon I wanted a fife and drum version of that tune.

Yes, the Hohenfriedberg march is nice, it is actually a cavalry march, made in honor of the Dragonerregiment 5.

But nevertheless I play the Prussians I prefer Grenadiers march. It is my favorite since long and it's a pleasure to hear it. Thanks, Caligula.

Are you other guys turning off the original battle music when using these march music?

I don't. Maybe play with your volume settings if the game music is too much? I only have the drum mod installed, there are four drum songs, what I did was keep two and over write two, that way when I have six+ units at once, I don't get over flooded with drums.

"Yankee Doodle" has been finished and is ready for download. On the first page, first post you will find the link!

I tried a different way in recording the drum sections. I basically cut back on some of the FX used and I have very minimal reverb on them. So they have a drier but more clear sound. I recorded this track like I would have with my bands music so its should sound also a little more "Full" and not so hollow and echoey. Let me know what you think, constructive criticism is always welcome!

Enjoy!

So I went to an old music store a few miles from my house. The guy trades in all kinds of old sheet music, and what not. So I'm digging through the bins he has stacked against a back wall. I had gone through four or five of them. I asked the old guy behind the counter if he had some old marching songs in sheet music. He says" Sure should be in the bottom crate in the corner over there." So I remove the 5 crates stacked on top and start digging. Most of it was Sousa but then I found this march called the Battle of Narva, I almost fell over it mentions Sweden! So I asked the guy if he can hold it for me and rushed home to look it up and this is what I have found!

"On November 30, 1700 (November 20 in the Swedish transitional calendar), Charles XII positioned his 8,140 men opposite the besieging Russian army of about 37,000 troops.

The Swedish army was commanded personally by Charles XII, assisted by General Carl Gustav Rehnskiöld. The Russian forces were commanded by Tsar Peter and Charles Eugène de Croy. Claiming important "domestic events" in Russia to attend to, Peter had left Narva in fear just days before and was therefore not present during the actual fighting.

For much of the day, a blizzard engulfed both armies, making attacks impossible. However, at midday, the winds changed and the snowstorm blew directly into the eyes of the Russians. Charles XII saw his opportunity and advanced on the Russian army under cover of the weather. The Swedes quickly broke through the Russian lines in several places, scattering their opponents, who could offer little resistance. In the chaos, some of the Russian soldiers killed their foreign officers, whom they hated. At one crucial point, a bridge over river Narva collapsed under retreating Russian troops. The bulk of the Russian army was trapped on the Estonian side of the river.

At dawn, it was clear that the Swedish army had won a stunning victory, but the force was relatively small and they had advanced on Narva in marches with scarce supplies for two days. One Swedish cavalry officer suddenly found himself in front of a fully armed Russian infantry company. He signed to them to lay down their arms, and they obliged. The Swedish troops discovered not only food in the Russian camp, but also liquor. Drunkenness broke out in the Swedish ranks. Nevertheless, the Swedish command managed to retain basic control of the army, however the overall number of Russian prisoners of the war were far to great to handle for the Swedish force. Consequently, common soldiers and NCO's were disarmed and sent back to Russia. Only Russian officers were made prisoners of war. In the end the Russian army was utterly defeated and the Swedes retained Narva.

The Russian surrender brought to Charles XII's army all of Peter's cannons, muskets and military supplies. This left Russia's remaining armed forces with essentially no equipment. If Sweden, or any other aggressor, had invaded Russia immediately after Narva, Peter would have been almost powerless to stop them."

So I went back to the store to buy it for a dollar!! Now my question is, would this be ok for a Sweden's field march? If not I only spent a buck, and it will add to my research. Let me know what you guys (and Gals) think!

Caligular,

my compliments on your work.

I am a bit confused so if someone can help me with a few basics.

These are not a replacement for the battle music? These are for the units moving?

If its for the units I noticed that each file used to contain 4 music files with the same tune... does this relate to sets of units or just the replay of the tune for any unit?

I was thinking of making a compliation of say the french, english etc so that you had changing music playing through the battle - but this was when I thought it was replacing the battlemusic and before they changed format into packs.

Or could you have different music for different units like cav, inf, art?

have you thought about making a battlemusic pack?

how does the pack file setup work and can I still mix it up so to speak?

Thanks again - love your music

Caligula

@Lord Yunson - Your very welcome my friend! Now to answer some of your questions...

These are not a replacement for the battle music? These are for the units moving?
If its for the units I noticed that each file used to contain 4 music files with the same tune... does this relate to sets of units or just the replay of the tune for any unit?
This will replace the drumroll that your units normally play while moving. In the actual game folder the title of the mp3 is "emp_cus_snare_march_01_v1.00_gme". Now there are four of them in the original pack file that the game installed. I modded those four with my patch packs with marches that I made. Unfortunately they will play for units that contain a drummer only and do not include the trumpet players for your militia or cavalry etc.., and they will play at random on 4 units out of your entire army that has those drummers. Now there is a slight issue because of the recent patches by CA that causes the sound to be very intermittent and some what unreliable in playback. Till this issue is resolved, you can use a quick fix. When you order your units forward and they begin to move, there is a small radial dial thingy with arrows on it to the lower right of your UI. Click the move forward arrow till you see the green markers move jsut a bit and I find that this usually makes the units play the music. Sometime you might have to do this a couple of times for it to work.

If your going to combine some songs from the packs be aware that they will play randomly on 4 units and it does create at times a terrible mishmash of sound. That is why I release my packs as seperate downloads with all of the same songs. It is not to difficult to swap the various song packs in and out of the data directory before play.

Or could you have different music for different units like cav, inf, art?
You can make seperate music for the units that contain a musician (i.e. Drummer, Bugler etc..) Which would be cavalry and some light units. Arty I don't think you could unless you overwrote one of their sfx.

have you thought about making a battlemusic pack?
Sure have. I was going to make a campaign music pack as well but since there are a few that are excellent, that are already out, I decided my time would be better spent creating new SFX and field marches.

how does the pack file setup work and can I still mix it up so to speak
I used the excellent Pack File Manager program which can be found somewhere on these forums to create the patch packs. You can mix anything you want in there! But again there are limitations with the game right now.

Hope some of this helps you!:beam:

If the music in a patch it should work, if its in a mod then it might cause a mismatch. At least thats what I've been reading of other mods in other forums.

The standard thats emerging is if its just sound/music/texture changes they come in patches. If its gameplay changes/additions etc, those come in mods.

Ok Judge. You have to unzip the Drum&Fife Mod.pack into your data directory located in your steam folder where the game is located *(See Below). To see if you unziped/unrared it in the right place you should see a file called for example "Drum&FifeMod_France.pack" in your Empire Data folder.

*My Empire data folder is located like this on my computer - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\empire total war\data - Yours will be in where ever steam installed on your system.

Also please be aware of the issues with the current patch released by CA which causes the sound to be 'Buggy'.

A few reminder points

1.) Music will only play for units that have a drummer/musician in the unit.

2.) What I found is this for a quick fix for the marches not playing...you march your troops forward and while they are marching tap your move forward button on your UI (Its on the right part of your screen with the dial that has arrows on it. Do this till you see the green markers move forward slightly from where they are going), that seems to fix the music not playing, for me at least.:2thumbsup:

3.) There is a 4 unit limit to the marching sounds. Not sure if this is hardcoded into the game but I can currently do nothing about this without some sort of mod tools.

4.) WHERE ARE MY MOD TOOLS CA!!!! :whip:

Hope some of that helps Judge, if this was already common knowledge with you, I apologize.

Yep! thats the whole point, I tried the link quoted e.g. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2J2HH826 but the mod isn't there.

Just get a message saying 'Unfortunately, the link you have clicked is not available.'

Well, if you tried d/l the mega pack and it's not in there, try PM'ing the creator of the mod, maybe he can pass along a working link for you.

Done that, and suggested he update the link so that other people can find it.

In fact, I managed to find a working link on the TW Centre Forum, but the Mod is currently causing my game to CTD, so I have another problem now. But nevertheless hopefully the link here will be updated shortly.

All of my mods have been repacked into the mega-pack. I will no longer be supporting this mod or adding to it. I have become swamped with writing my own music for my demo cd as well as music for a semi-total conversion mod for Fallout 3 based on Warhammer 40k called WARP and with real life work to boot LOL. I may sometime in the future return to write more, but for right now this mod will be getting one more music pack, a march for Russia. As for the links here, they are all dead, and I will be updating the mega-pack link here in a few minutes.

@Didz - Your CTD is not caused by my mod I can assure you. It has to be a conflict between my mod and another mod. I still currently use some of my marches and I am using quite a few mods and have never gotten a CTD. A few things you can do.
1. It is not a mod pack file and does not need to be added to your mod script. Its a patch so it should function unless you have something else that overrides (such as a mod pack) those music files.
2. Try removing some mods and see if you still get CTDs then. If so, then its a conflict.
3. All else fails try downloading the megapack, you'll not only get the Ottoman marches but every march I have released to date!
4. If you don't feel like downloading the megapack, I may be able to just up the Ottoman March for you temporarily.

Hope some of this helps you! :)

Sorry, to read that you are not supporting these mods anymore.

Whilst, I accept that Rusty and Graham have sort of stolen the technical edge with their faction specific music system and authentic instrumentation, I for one am still using the Drum and File Mod.

The main reason for this is that I'm still having technical issues trying to get Graham's stuff to work, and I suspect I've got conflict problems. I've actually had to reinstall twice now as a result of trying to sort this out, so for me its much simpler and safer to stick with your music, at least for the time being.
