View Full Version : The Blue and the Grey - an American Civil War IH

First off, allow me to introduce myself - My name is Vladimir Fred-nin, and I am a devout IH player on the TWC forum. I, in particular, like really bloody, war-based IHs, and I have hosted 2 moderately successful ACW games in the past on TWC. I thought I'd spread my infection influence to the .org forum, so here I present you with my civil war IH!

--------------------------

Introduction:

The year is 1861. Following the battle of First Manassas/Bull Run, the Northern and Southern half of the United States are at war over issues such as State vs. National legislature, and Slavery. 11 Southern States are fighting what they believe to be the 2nd American Revolution: North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Florida, Arkansas, Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, and Virginia. They have declared their independence from 23 Union states, and after the first major battle, have proved their mettle in combat. There are 800,000 volunteers in the South against over 2 Million in the North, but they have yet to be organized. That is where the players come in.

Each Player will be a General leading an army from one of the two nations. The limit for army size for the South is 90,000 men and the North's limit is 120,000 men. However this certainly does not mean that players HAVE to choose big armies; For example, Confederate General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson fought a series of successful battles against the Union and he had only a Division(less than 10,000 men) at his command(see Shenandoah Valley Campaign).

There will be a 'Turn' system; each player will say where he wants his/her army to go in that turn and what the army is to do. I will then use maps of major roads in the area and from that I can decide if they happen to clash with enemy forces.

The battle system is the following; say the Confederates have 10,000 men and the Union has 14,000. Each of the types of soldiers have a different fighting value from 10 to 1(10 being the worst, 1 being the best; I'll explain later). In this case the union has a value of, say, 8 and the confederates have a value of 7. To determine casualties, the number of one nation's troops is divided by the power value of the opposite side. Here is an example:

Confederates: 10,000 men/8 = 1,250 Casualties
Union: 14,000 men/7 = 2,000 Casualties

Then to determine killed and wounded, the number of casualties is divided by 3. This number is the killed soldiers. Then to find wounded, we subtract the number of killed from the remaining casualties. These remaining casualties are the wounded.

Confederates: 1,250/3 = 417 Killed, 833 Wounded
Union: 2,000/3 = 667 Killed, 1,333 Wounded

Recruitment:

There is also a recruitment chart for numbers of men that can be recruited for each army per turn. Here it is for both nations.

Confederates:
Max of 5 Brigades per turn
1 Brigade = 3,000 Infantry
OR 2,000 Cavalry*
OR 1,500 Artillerymen + 50 Guns**

* Max of 10 Cavalry units per army
** Max of 2 Artillery units per army

2 Brigades = 1 Division
2 Divisions = 1 Corps
? Corps = 1 Army

Union:
Max of 5 Brigades per turn
1 Brigade = 4,000 Infantry
OR 2,500 Cavalry*
OR 1,800 Artillerymen + 60 Guns**

* Max of 10 Cavalry units per army
** Max of 2 Artillery units per army

2 Brigades = 1 Division
2 Divisions = 1 Corps
? Corps = 1 Army

Anyone is free to join and make their own armies, along with naming them whatever they wish.
PLAYERS WILL HAVE TO SPECIFY WHAT NUMBER AND TYPE OF BRIGADES ARE INCLUDED IN THEIR ARMIES.

EXAMPLE:

Army of the Potomac
10 Infantry Brigades
5 Cavalry Brigades
2 Artillery Brigades

Western Department - Leader: Fisherking - 71,044 Men, 100 Guns

Although I do not fully understand:

Count me in!

Can I recruit the Army of Rhodes Island?

Vladimir Fred-nin
01-24-2011, 21:03
If you mean Rhode Island, then sure.

Just post how many brigades of what kind you have in your army(like the example in the recruitment section).

ELITEofWARMANGINGERYBREADMEN88
01-24-2011, 22:33
Can I raise the Army of Pennsvayina? (Pardon my spelling lol)

Vladimir Fred-nin
01-24-2011, 23:37
Sure, just post how many brigades and what type they are pl0x.

Fisherking
01-26-2011, 10:24
Okay, you need opposing forces to I’ll take the Confederate Western Department, if you don’t mind?

Kagemusha
01-26-2011, 16:41
I will raise Confederate army of Virginia. If i understand correctly i can recruit 5 Brigades for it this first turn? If so i will raise 1st and 2nd independent artillery Brigade´s for the army. 1st Infantry division, consisting of 1st and 2nd Virginia infantry Brigades and an independent 1st Cavalry Brigade as core units of my Army of Virginia.

Franconicus
01-26-2011, 19:02
So the Blue Ones can recruit 5 brigades this year, right. Then I recruit two infantry brigades and leave the rest to my allies.

Fisherking
01-26-2011, 20:07
Perhaps I am mistaken but I don’t think we need tell everyone what we are recruiting or where we are moving.

If I read correctly each player can recruit 5 units. Not as a team.

but I guess he will say...

Vladimir Fred-nin
01-26-2011, 21:09
No, No, you guys misunderstood me.

In your starting armies you can take as many troops as you want. During the game, when/if players need more troops, they are allowed to recruit troops into their army. They are allowed to recruit a max of 5 brigades per army, per turn.

Vladimir Fred-nin
01-27-2011, 02:07
Here we go, Fisherking made his army correctly.

2 Artillery Brigades - 3,000 Men
6 Mounted Infantry Brigades(count as Infantry) - 18,000 Men
9 Cavalry Brigades - 18,000 Men
17 Infantry Brigades - 51,000 Men

90,000 Men total

Kagemusha
01-27-2011, 14:33
Alrighty then.Army of Virginia:

2 artillery Brigades- 3000 men and 100 guns
8 Cavalry Brigades- 16 000 men
23 infantry Brigades- 69 000 men

88 000 men in total.

ELITEofWARMANGINGERYBREADMEN88
01-27-2011, 16:15
Army of Pennsylvania:

2 artillery Brigades- 3000 men and 100 guns
10 Cavalry Brigades- 25,000 men
28 infantry Brigades- 112,000 men

140,000 men and 100 cannon.

Vladimir Fred-nin
01-27-2011, 21:06
Warman, you did 2 things wrong:

1. as a northern army your army's troop limit is 120,000 men.
2. You used the stats for CONFEDERATE brigades, not union ones.

Franconicus
01-28-2011, 08:09
Alright, so the ARMY of RHODE ISLAND consists of
2 Artillery, 8 Cavalry and 15 Infantry Brigades.
In total 83,600 men and 120 guns. Enough to end the rebellion!

Vladimir Fred-nin
01-28-2011, 12:48
That should do nicely. ;)

Some stupid questions:
1) Can we chose the starting point/ theatre? For example Western Territories?
2) For what period of time do we make our orders, days, weeks, months years?
3) Are there other armies than the ones played by the players?

1. Yes, so long as it is in your namesake state-region(for example, no armies of the western department in virginia :P)
2. Turns, which take 6 months each.
3. Only if there is a seige. Cities tend to have Militias. :P

Hey, tone it down you two. :P

Turn 1 coming up.

Vladimir Fred-nin
02-08-2011, 18:32
TURN 1:

The game began as, in Virginia, both sides took a defensive stance; The Union at the border of Virginia, the Confederacy at the Bull Run River. The only action done was that of the Confederate Cavalry, who attacked the occupied towns of Leesburg and Alexandria; the two towns were taken by Union troops attempting to establish a foothold in Virginia.

Battle of Leesburg:
BATTLE OF LEESBURG
Confederacy: 2,000 Cavalry
Union: 4,000 Infantry

Southern Skirmish:
CSA: 1,500 Cavalry
USA: 2,000 Infantry

Casualties:
CSA: 77 Killed, 154 Wounded
USA: 121 Killed, 243 Wounded

Northern Skirmish:
CSA: 500 Cavalrymen
USA: 1,000 Infantrymen

Casualties:
CSA: 26 Killed, 51 Wounded
USA: 51 Killed, 103 Wounded

Result: Inconclusive;
Confederate Tactical Victory
Federal Strategic Victory

Leesburg recaptured by CSA

Battle of Alexandria:
Battle of Alexandria
CSA: 4 Cavalry Brigades
USA: 3 Infantry Brigades

Southern Skirmish:
CSA: 2 Cavalry Brigades
USA: 2 Infantry Brigades

Casualties and Losses:
CSA: 205 Killed, 410 Wounded
USA: 485 Killed, 970 Wounded

Northern Skirmish:
CSA: 2 Cavalry Brigades
USA: 1 Infantry Brigade

Casualties and Losses:
CSA: 242 Killed, 485 Wounded
USA: 206 Killed, 411 Wounded

Combined Casualties:
CSA: 447 Killed, 965 Wounded
USA: 691 Killed, 1,318 Wounded

Result: Confederate Strategic Victory, Union Tactical Victory
Confederate Cavalry withdraws down road, prepares defenses

After the Battle of Alexandria, the Confederate Cavalry withdrew down the road, falsely thinking that this was a Federal Invasion of Virginia. However they soon realized that the Federals were not coming, and so they rejoined the Defensive Line at the Bull Run River.

Meanwhile, in the West, Confederate troops have redeployed. A large force has shifted across Missouri, to St. Louis; this may be a plan for a future invasion...

Also, in Ohio, the Army of Tennessee has begun it's attack; It besieges Cincinatti.

TURN 2:

This turn, the Federals went on the offensive in the East, and the Confederates did so in the West. However, first, the Confederates did some major troop movements; The Western Department shifted troops east via the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad, and the Army of Virginia moved west to assist the Army of Tennessee in their campaign in Ohio. However, the Federals used the "opportunity" to launch an invasion of Western Virginia via the blue ridge mountains; They had 4 corps of their army attempt to march through Virginia, and get to Kentucky and Tennessee. However, their gamble failed, as the Army of Western Virginia formed to defend their homes, finally putting up a fight at Charleston, Virginia(Modern day West Virginia).

Meanwhile, the Confederate Western Department, taking over in Virginia, seized the crossings of the Potomac at Alexandria, as well as the Chain Bridge(the main connection between Arlington and Washington Proper) itself with no casualties. Finally this turn, the Confederate Army of Virginia arrived in Cincinatti, and will be ready to launch it's attack against the Army of Ohio next turn.

This concludes Turn 2, I will begin sending orders out later in this week. I will also update the troop numbers.

TURN 3:

This turn saw heavy casualties on both sides as the Confederates went on a strategic offensive. In the East, their Maryland campaign, combining the many Confederate movements with few Federal ones, saw the capture and execution of thousands of Federal troops, and the fall of 4 strategically important towns, all in Maryland. Because of this, Washington, D.C. has been isolated from the rest of the country, and the Army of Pennsylvania as well as the Federal Maryland Corps have all pulled back to the city and begun entrenching. However, Confederate positions at Arlington Heights have begun bombarding them with all 100 guns that the Western Department has in it's arsenal.

The formation of the Confederate Maryland Corps was greatly quickened by the capture of the Harpers Ferry Federal Arsenal.

Meanwhile, in the West, the Confederate Armies of Tennessee and Virginia both decided to head south and attempt to engage the Federal Army of Rhode Island(all of which has been sent to Western Virginia to assist the depleted Corps' there); The Army of Tennessee made it out, but the Army of Virginia was attacked by the Army of Ohio at Cincinatti...

The fighting was intense, and both armies still are licking their wounds, but in the meantime, the armies in the Western theatres got busy.
In Western Virginia, the Federal Army of Rhode Island, attempting to retreat after the stalemate at Huntington, made their way north via the Teays Valley, attempting to make it to Lexington, Virginia, home of the famous Virginia Military Institute; However, they were followed by a Confederate Cavalry Screen and a "Running Bombardment" that followed them up the valley; meanwhile, advanced forces made their way to St. Albans, Virginia, while the Army of Western Virginia, acting as a support and reserve, was stationed nearby. TURN 5:

This turn saw the armies in the East take little action as they licked their wounds. However, one major battle in the East did happen; The advanced elements of the Army of Pennsylvania, struggling to get out of Washington as they were under bombardment from Confederate positions on Arlington Heights, met the Confederate Army of North Carolina and the Confederate Maryland Corps in battle, in the vicinity of one of the 5 Confederate Redoubts used in the Siege of Washington; the Lee Redoubt. The Confederate troops got there first, quickly getting artillery on the Redoubt to use for later, looking over the several small villages below, where later that day, the bloody act would once again resume...

Battle of the Lee Redoubt:
Battle of the Lee Redoubt:
USA: I, II, III, V, and VII Corps, Reserve DIvision, Army of Pennsylvania(66,709 Men)
II Division, Maryland Corps(13,800 Men)

CSA: Maryland Corps(36,009 Men)
Army of North Carolina(41,844 Men)

Skirmish at South Hill:
USA: 1st and 2nd Infantry Brigades, I Corps, Army of Pennsylvania(5,225 Men)
CSA: II Division, Conf. Maryland Corps(12,000 Men)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 420 Killed, 839 Wounded, 1,000 Captured
CSA: 582 Killed, 1,164 Wounded

Result: Two brigades of the I Corps attempted to hold off over twice their number of Confederates. The Confederates took heavy loss, but eventually beat the Federals back.

Attack on St. Lo Township:
USA: II Corps and 65th Infantry Brigade, Army of Pennsylvania(17,336 Men)
CSA: I Corps and 99th Infantry Brigade, Army of North Carolina(14,310 Men)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 808 Killed, 1,617 Wounded
CSA: 776 Killed, 1,551 Wounded

Result: Federal forces entrenched themselves around the St. Lo Township, a small community that has fewer people than the average battalion. The Confederates attacked and were repulsed by fierce fighting, but at a heavy cost for the Federals.

Action at the Bloody Lane:
USA: III and IV Corps, 3rd Infantry Brigade, Army of Pennsylvania(32,637 Men)
CSA: III Corps, Army of North Carolina, I Division, Conf. Maryland Corps(22,957)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 1,334 Killed, 2,679 Wounded
CSA: 1,266 Killed, 2,531 Wounded, 2,000 Captured

Result: Outnumbered, but brave, Confederate forces attacked across the field under withering fire from the Federals. They managed to put up a fierce fight and at one point even mount a bayonet charge. At first, it was successful, but then, two Federal Brigades came up in support, sweeping the Confederates back across the field, and capturing 2,000 of them.

The Battle of Marylanders:
USA: II Division, Fed. Maryland Corps(13,800 Men, 60 Guns)
CSA: III Division, Conf. Maryland Corps(9,000 Men)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 559 Infantry Killed, 1,119 Infantry Wounded
266 Artillerymen Killed, 9 Guns Spiked(this means that the barrel or powderhole was plugged) or Destroyed
CSA: 640 Killed, 1,280 Wounded

Result: The III Division of the Confederate Maryland Corps was ordered to attack it's own bretheren, the II Division of the Federal Maryland Corps. The two forces of Marylanders locked horns and fought bravely, both sides fighting to a stalemate. The Confederates fell back in the end, though, so by default, it was a Federal victory.

Confederate advance along Confederate Left:
USA: 1st and 2nd Infantry Brigades + Cavalry Corps, Army of Pennsylvania(12,168 Men)
CSA: II Division, Conf. Maryland Corps(11,418 Men)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 437 Cavalry Killed, 873 Cavalry Wounded
177 Infantry Killed, 355 Infantry Wounded

CSA: 629 Killed, 1,258 WOunded, 2,000 Captured

Result: Confederate Infantry, trying their luck, advanced along their left flank, where earlier, two Federal Infantry brigades broke and ran;
However, the Confederate advance runs smack dab into over 9,300 Federal Cavalrymen, as well as the two reformed Infantry brigades. The Confederates
put up a fight, but eventually turn tail and run; The cavalry ride into them, killing many, and taking many more prisoners.

Total Casualties:

Army of Pennsylvania: 2,740 Infantry Killed, 5,481 Infantry Wounded, 1,000 Captured, 437 Cavalry Killed, 873 Cavalry Wounded
Fed. Maryland Corps: 559 Infantry Killed, 1,119 Infantry Wounded, 266 Artillerymen Killed, 9 Guns Spiked

Total: 4,002 Killed, 7,472 Wounded, 1,000 Captured

Army of North Carolina: 1,409 Killed, 3,370 Wounded, 1,000 Captured
Maryland Corps: 2,484 Killed, 4,968 Wounded, 3,000 Captured

Total: 3,893 Killed, 8,338 Wounded, 4,000 Captured

Result: Stalemate, Confederates take redoubt but lose many men, Confederate forces unable to continue on

Both sides fail to accomplish their goals; the Federals fail in that they were to attack Baltimore, and the Confederates were trying to fight their way back into the Entrenchments around Washington to tighten the noose once more. Meanwhile, somewhat farther north, the 6th Corps, Army of New York was dispatched to assist the Army of Pennsylvania in besieging Baltimore; However, they suddenly find themselves confronted with 2 Confederate Corps near Abingdon, Maryland.

Battle of Abingdon:
Battle of Abingdon:
USA: VI Corps, Army of New York(16,000)
CSA: I and II Corps, Western Department(20,363)

Federal Right Flank:
USA: 86th and 87th Infantry Brigades(8,000)
CSA: 24th, 25th, 26th, and 27th Infantry Brigades(10,187)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 373 Killed, 746 Wounded
CSA: 489 Killed, 977 Wounded

Federal Center:
USA: 88th Infantry Brigade(4,000)
CSA: 28th and 29th Infantry Brigades(5,088)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 188 Killed, 377 Wounded
CSA: 246 Killed, 492 Wounded

Federal Left Flank:
USA: 89th Infantry Brigade(4,000)
CSA: 30th and 31st Infantry Brigades(5,088)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 205 Killed, 411 Wounded
CSA: 238 Killed, 476 Wounded

Total Casualties:
USA: 766 Killed, 1,534 Wounded
2,300 Casualties total

CSA: 973 Killed, 1,945 Wounded
2,918 Casualties total

Result: Tactical Confederate Victory, Strategic Federal Victory

With both sides making little progress, it appears that a War of Attrition may set in if neither side takes the initiative...still, this gives the Union a great advantage...

Meanwhile, in the West; The desperate Army of Rhode Island, surrounded either by mountains or Confederate troops, has taken a gamble and attacked the Confederate Army of Tennessee.

Second Battle of St. Albans:
2nd Battle of St. Albans:
Belligerents:
USA: Army of Rhode Island(111,784 Men)
CSA: Army of Tennessee(102,212 Men)

Federal Attack across Valley:
USA: I, II, and III Corps, 3rd and 4th Artillery Brigades, Army of Rhode Island(48,824 Men, 120 Guns)
CSA: I and II Corps, Army of Tennessee(22,871 Men)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 2,108 Killed, 4,217 Wounded
CSA: 935 Killed, 1,871 Wounded

Result: Federal forces amassed for an attack on the Confederate Force on the other side of a mountain valley, coming under heavy Rifle fire.
Federal Artillery caused high Confederate Casualties, but the Federal Infantry were shredded.

Federal Cavalry Flanking Attack:
USA: I, II, III, and IV Cavalry Corps, Army of Rhode Island(39,176 Men)
CSA: I and II Cavalry Corps, Army of Tennessee(14,001 Men, 100 Guns)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 1,443 Killed, 2,886 Wounded
CSA: 635 Killed, 1,270 WOunded(including 136 Artillerymen Killed; 5 Guns Disabled)

Result: Outnumbered nearly 3-1 by Federal Forces, Confederate Cavalry bravely engaged the Federal
Lead element, taking the cavalry column by surprise. The Confederate and Federal cavalry skirnmished
before the Confederate Guns were brought up, slaying many federal troops and forcing their column back.

Federal Night Attack:
USA: I, II, and III Corps, Army of Rhode Island(43,116 Men)
CSA: I and II Corps, Army of Tennessee(21,936 Men)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 1,118 Killed, 2,237 Wounded
CSA: 1,189 Killed, 2,378 Wounded, 4,000 Captured

Result: The Federal forces, in the quiet of night, moved in formation across the valley, up the other side, and found themselves right inside the Confederate encampment.
Most Confederate troops were asleep, but the few standing watch quickly alerted the others to the Federal presence when Rifles were heard discharging. The Federal troops
then routed the Confederates by capturing many of them and causing over 3,500 casualties to the Confederates, whilst sustaining a similar loss to their own troops. The
Confederate Line is broken and the Confederate troops retreat in the next few hours.

Total Casualties:
USA: 3,226 Infantry Killed, 6,454 Infantry Wounded
1,443 Cavalry Killed, 2,886 Cavalry Wounded
4,669 Total Dead, 9,340 Total Wounded
14,009 Casualties Total

CSA: 2,124 Infantry Killed, 4,249 Infantry Wounded, 4,000 Infantry Captured
499 Cavalry Killed, 1,270 cavalry Wounded
136 Artillerymen Killed, 5 Guns Disabled
2,759 Total Dead, 5,519 Total Wounded, 4,000 Captured
12,278 Casualties Total

Result: Tactical Federal Victory; Strategic Stalemate

The Gamble pays off, and the Army of Tennessee retreats. This means that the Army of Rhode Island will be free to escape, but it must move quickly...

This concludes Turn 5. I will update army numbers at a later time.

Some of you guys really need to start being more strategic about things. You need to have set goals to complete each turn, not stuff as simple as "order all troops to attack". You need to try to get the enemy pushed back, and many times that is accomplished via maneuvering, not direct assault.

Just saying this as a heads up. ;)

TURN 6:

This turn, alot of **** happened, to put it bluntly. Alot of major ****. Let's start out with the Eastern theatre, shall we?

Over the past year, the Army of Virginia has shipped men secretly from their bases in Ohio to the Parkersburg Rail head in Western Virginia. From there, they discreetly marched east, through Virginia, across the Potomac, and then found Washington, D.C., defended only by 2 roughly half-strength Infantry Corps and a so-large-it's-a-Corps-esc Infantry Division. Seeing that they outnumbered the defenders by 5:2, they decide to attack Washington. Teaming up with the Western Department's positions on Arlington Heights, they bring their massive artillery advantage to bear; 200 Confederate Guns, 0 Federal Guns. The Confederate Attack Columns begin moving toward the outskirts of the city...
Second Siege of Washington D.C.

USA: I and V Corps, Army of Pennsylvania + I Division, Maryland Corps(34,329 Men)
CSA: Army of Virginia(87,062 Men, 100 Guns)
V Corps + 3rd Artillery Brigade, Western Department(8,724 Men, 100 Guns)

Opening skirmish:
USA: 1st Infantry Brigade, Army of Pennsylvania(1,819 Men)
CSA: 1st Infantry Brigade, Army of Virginia(2,690 Men)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 102 Killed, 204 Wounded
CSA: 143 Killed, 287 Wounded

Result: The vanguards of both forces open fire on one another outside Washington. The smaller Federal force is forced to fall back, despite causing the Confederates heavier casualties, retreating back to their trenches on the outskirts of town.

Confederate Main Assault:
USA: I and V Corps, Army of Pennsylvania + I Division, Maryland Corps(34,227 Men)

CSA: I, II, III, IV, and V Corps, Army of Virginia(53,515 Men)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 1,600 Killed, 3,201 Wounded
CSA: 2,567 Killed, 5,133 Wounded

Result: The Outnumbered Federals put up a tenacious defense of their positions, pinning down and butchering the lead Confederate Brigades, but as more and more Co nfederate troops were stacked against them, eventually the Federal troops broke and began a disorganized rout down Pennsylvania Avenue. A lucky cannonball flies through the White House window, forcibly removing President Lincoln's chest cavity. With the majority of their city taken, and their president dead, the Federals form up around the White House for one last stand, and...

Confederate Artillery Barrage:
USA: I and V Corps, Army of Pennsylvania + I Division, Maryland Corps(32,627 Men)
CSA: All Artillery(200 Guns)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 2,417 Killed, 4,834 Wounded
CSA: None

...The Confederate Artillery let loose a hellish fury on the Federal positions. With no defensive works to hide in, they are slaughtered all along the Washington Mall and Capitol Hill. Shells, Canister Shot, Quicklime Shot, Solid Cannonballs, all of them take their deadly toll. When the rain of death ceases, the Federal Garrison of Washington surrenders. The Confederates have taken the capital of the United States.

Total Casualties:
USA: 4,119 Killed, 8,239 Wounded, 30,210 Captured(wounded included)
34,329 Casualties Total

CSA: 2,710 Killed, 5,420 Wounded
8,130 Casualties Total

Result: Devestating Confederate Victory, all non-casualty Federal forces surrender, President Lincoln killed, Washington, D.C. Falls; Army of Pennsylvania loses the I and V Corps, Federal Maryland Corps loses the I Division, both now have no base of operations.

With this disaster in the East, the Army of Pennsylvania is trapped out in the open, reduced not only by that encounter, but also by this battle that took place only a day previous. You see, the majority of the AoP and the Maryland Corps were gone because they were, once again, attacking Lee redoubt, in an attempt to turn the Western Department's right flank, and destroy their defensive line running southeast, along the Pawtuxet river.

Second Battle of Lee Redoubt
USA: II, III, IV, VI, VII, and Cavalry Corps, Army of Pennsylvania; II Division, Maryland Corps
(84,830 Men, 160 Guns)

CSA: Army of North Carolina, Confederate Maryland Corps
(69,960 Men, 100 Guns)

The Federal Night attack is attempted, but is quickly stopped due to a heavy rainstorm.

Federal assault on the Confederate Skirmish line:
USA: III, IV, VI, and VII Corps, Army of Pennsylvania(50,096 Men, 109 Guns)
CSA: 32nd, 33rd, and 34th Cavalry Brigades(6,000 Men)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 2,722 Killed, 5,443 Wounded
CSA: 408 Killed, 916 Wounded

Result: Dismounted Confederate Cavalry put up dogged resistance against overwhelming Federal forces until they are forcefully driven off, sustaining over 20% casualties

Federal assault on the Lee Redoubt:
USA: II, III, IV, VI, and VII Corps, Army of Pennsylvania(60,066 Men, 109 Guns)
II Division, Maryland Corps(13,116 Men, 51 Guns)

CSA: I, II, and III Corps + 10th Artillery Brigade, Army of North Carolina(33,435 Men, 50 Guns)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 3,875 Killed, 7,750 Wounded, 4,000 Captured
CSA: 1,627 Killed, 3,254 Wounded, 2,000 Captured

Result: As the battle wore on, the Federals continued their bloody assault, aiming to capture the Lee Redoubt; However, after fierce volleys and bayonet fighting, they only captured 2,000 Rebel Prisoners.

Confederate Counterattack:
USA: II Corps, Army of Pennsylvania(10,942 Men)
CSA: Conf. Maryland Corps(30,425 Men, 50 Guns)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 669 Killed, 1,339 Wounded, 1,500 Captured
CSA: 474 Killed, 947 Wounded (All inflicted on I Division)

Result: A distress message sent to the nearby Maryland Corps was well timed, and just as the disastrous attack fails, the Confederate Maryland Corps comes swinging around the Army of North Carolina's right flank, similar to a door on a hinge, and sweeps the Federal forces away. The Federal troops are utterly routed.

Total Casualties:
USA: 7,266 Killed, 14,532 Wounded, 5,500 Captured
27,298 Casualties total

CSA: 2,509 Killed, 5,117 Wounded, 2,000 Captured
9,626 Casualties total

Result: Major Confederate Victory, Army of Pennsylvania dissolves from a massive amount of desertion

These twin disasters completely shatter the morale of the Army of Pennsylvania, and virtually the entire army deserts. In the Eastern Theatre, the only remaining threat to the Confederacy is the Army of New York.

Now, let us turn our attention to the Western theatre:

This turn, the Army of Rhode Island managed to escape through the small hole it punched through the Confederate Lines, however it proceded slowly once it escaped. This allowed the Confederate Army of Western Virginia to maneuvre quickly south to defeat it, managing to catch up with it in a small, unnamed town in the woods; However, instead of fighting, the Army of Rhode Island, which was battered by low rations, ammunition, and racked with disease(not to mention the near-shattered morale from hearing of Washington), decided to surrender.

The Forest Peace Accords
USA: Army of Rhode Island(107,262 Men, 120 Guns)
CSA: Army of Western Virginia(68,536 Men, 100 Guns)

Federal Surrender:
Casualties and Losses:
USA: Entire army surrenders(107,262 Men, 120 Guns)
CSA: None

With the loss of this army, the only remaining Federal forces of any significance are the Armies of New York and Ohio. The Confederates are very close to their independence indeed, but they still have a long way to go...

This concludes Turn 6. Please send in orders for Turn 7 Immediately.

As for Warman and Franconicus, you are allowed to take command of either the Army of New York or the Army of Ohio, should either of you wish. PM me with your decisions, and the army you are taking, if you decide to.

I will begin updating numbers now.

How cam my army surrender? I always thought I was the commander, didn't I have to sign any documents or so to surrender.
Well, seeing as your ammo was EXTREMELY low, and as several others have pointed out, you should have taken casualties from disease after being huddled together in the cold in the wilderness for so long, and if you tried to cross the river, you would have had to leave your horses and cannons behind, as the Rebels controlled every nearby bridge and road.

And how can my whole entire army just desert? Isn't it kinda unfair to not allow us to recruit since I want to fight on and me and Fran will be severly outnumbered.

Well, you've been ordering pointless and costly attacks ever since you beat the Rebs out of Washington(by a slim margin, might I add), and you never really tried to hit them where they were weak; you chopped your army up into groups and had the larger group attack heavily fortified positions just last turn, while the smaller group got nearly annihilated by Kage's army which had just arrived. At that point, Morale should have been extremely low, especially with the news of the death of the President, the fall of Washington, the complete destruction or capture of the equivalent of 3 Corps, and the deaths of thousands of men, all within a few days' time.

Warman has taken control of the Army of New York, so Franconicus, if you want to take control of the Army of Ohio, just let me know.

Aright, Warman wants to go on fighting - I won't let him down!!
Fred, could you give me some info about my army, the strength, the units, the moral, supply, experience, position and all we know about the enemy?
And tell everybody that I will shoot every soldier or officer that even thinks about surrendering without my clear order!

The Strength and Units are listed on page 2. I update an army's units and their strengths every turn.

Morale is so/so, supply is excellent at the moment. experience is so/so, some units have alot, some have none, but the army has done it's share of fighting against the Army of Virginia. It has been stationed in Columbus, OH for the past 2-3 turns, IIRC.

Following this thread has made we wonder how the Union generals in this IH have managed to be even more incompetant than their real life counterparts - I would have thought that was impossible!! In real life, despite the presence of some of the most talented generals in history - Lee, Jackson - and some fine troops, the Confederates still got ground down and defeated by the sheer numbers and technological advantages of the North. In our rerun the IH Union generals seem to have lost the war in about a fortnight - now that is some achievement!!

KK, you are kiddin', aren't you. Can't you see that we are holding all the cards? Unlike the real northern guys we were willing to fight and so the rebels suffered high casualties each turn. Have a look at the human reserves we have and they have. They had to stop recruitment pretty soon. Alright, we are not allowed to recruit new soldiers as well now, but that does not matter. We lured half of the rebels into our territory, blinded by their foolish southern pride and ignorance. Warman can easily deal with them while I can finish those dislocated and exhausted rebs in the west.
Even if the rebels would gain a peace, do you really think that there would be two American states for long. The north has the people, the north has the factories, the north has technology. And the Yankees always had the destination to control the whole continent.

Fisherking, I see that my most Christian cherity will do no good. Therefore I will have to teach you rebels a lesson. Anyway, I am not fighting against women and children. Therefore I will give you time enough to evacuate Richmond where I will go to. I hope you will not hide behind skirts and we will finish this rebellion in a showdown!

I will be waiting for you around Canal Street and 21st Street.

I will give you a guided tour of your new accommodations.

You can have the best room in the house.

That would be Libby Prison, for Federal Prisoners...

Okay, just to make my job easier, I'm gonna post ONE of the battles this turn. The turn is NOT over yet, I am ONLY doing this so I can update the numbers of the Western Department for their next battle this turn.

Battle of Clifton Heights
USA: I-VI Corps, Army of New York(93,034 Men, 50 Guns)
CSA: I-VIII Corps, Western Department(74,067 Men, 100 Guns)

Description of Battlefield: Federal forces camp in and around a large town at the center of an 8-way crossroad, forming defensive lines in a semicircle. Just to the north of the town, a large hill is defended by an entire Federal Corps as well as all of the Federal Artillery. A reserve of two Corps ensures that the Federals will not suffer a breakthrough in their line - or at least, not without heavy losses to the attacker. Meanwhile, the Federal Left flank is in the air; it is loosely connected to the main body and has no defensive fortifications. However, the majority of the Confederate army is across from the Federal Right flank and Center, so there is little worry.

Meanwhile, the Confederate force, numbering roughly 20,000 men less, is concentrated on shattering the Federal line and pushing them back through the town. As such, they have amassed 3 Corps to face the large hill in the North - outnumbering the Federals there by 3-1 in terms of Brigades - as well as having the Infantry component of the 3 smaller Corps in the Confederate army(two Corps having three Infantry Brigades, the third only having two) facing the well-defended Federal center, which points inward so as to provide Enfilade fire to any who approach it. The Confederate right, which is connected to the rest of the army loosely at best, is angled so as to prevent the Center from being flanked, with the Confederate Extreme right flank being refused so THEY aren't flanked. Finally, the Confederate Artillery are amassed on a ridge just behind the Confederate Center.

Confederate Assault on Federal Right:
USA: I Corps + 8th Artillery Brigade, Army of New York(17,800 Men)
CSA: I, II, and III Corps, Western Department(29,493 Men)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 896 Killed, 1,793 Wounded
CSA: 1,394 Killed, 2,889 Wounded, 2,000 Captured

Result: Three Confederate Corps stepped off and began their assault on the Federal right flank. The Center(2nd) Corps was subject to devestating Musket and Cannon fire; The Left(1st) Corps was outflanked by Federal reserves and almost was destroyed; but the Right(3rd) Corps almost made a breakthrough, facing only one Federal Brigade as resistance. However, when they saw the other two Corps pulling back, they decided it best to pull back as well.

Confederate Assault on Federal Center:
USA: Infantry of V Corps(12,000 Men)
CSA: Infantry of IV, V, and VI Corps(21,934 Men)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 684 Killed, 1,367 Wounded
CSA: 1,134 Killed, 2,267 Wounded, 1,000 Captured

Result: Like on the Federal right, the Confederate forces charged headlong right into Federal lines, taking heavy Rifle fire all the way. After about half an hour, they broke and ran back to their starting position.

Federal assault on Confederate Right:
USA: II and III Corps, Army of New York(32,000 Men)
CSA: VIII Corps, Western Department(12,000 Men)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 928 Killed, 1,858 Wounded, 2,000 Captured
CSA: 631 Killed, 1,267 Wounded

Result: The Federal assault on the Confederate right was one of the most near-run things in the entire war. Both sides took, proportional to their respective armies, heavy casualties, but the Federals were on the worse end of it.

Confederate Flanking Maneuvre:
USA: IV Corps, Army of New York(16,000 Men)
CSA: VII Corps, Western Department(10,640 Men)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 882 Killed, 1,763 Wounded, 2,000 Captured

CSA: 468 Infantry Killed, 936 Infantry Wounded
108 Cavalry Killed, 217 Cavalry Wounded
Total: 576 Killed, 1,153 Wounded

Result: The Reserves of both armies moved to the southern end of the battlefield to try to swing the odds there in their favor, but the two forces ended up clashing and fighting. The Confederates had a Brigade of Cavalry mixed in with the Infantry, providing them with an extra bit of staying power. As a result, the Federals were beaten back with heavy losses.

Total Casualties:
USA: 3,390 Killed, 6,781 Wounded, 4,000 Captured
14,171 Casualties Total

CSA: 3,735 Killed, 7,576 Wounded, 3,000 Captured
14,311 Casualties Total

Result of Battle: Stalemate, Strategic Federal Victory

Again, I am only doing this so I can update the numbers of the Western Department for their next battle this turn.

Turn 7:
This turn, there were a number of maneuvers. Aside from the battle of Clifton Heights, there also was a skirmish along the ocean between two Cavalry forces, though minimal casualties were caused.

Skirmish at Green Ridge:

Belligerents:
USA: Cavalry Corps, Army of New York(10,000 Men)
CSA: 1st and 2nd Cavalry Corps, Western Department(15,332 Men)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 599 Killed, 1,197 Wounded
1,796 Casualties Total

CSA: 852 Killed, 1,705 Wounded, 1,000 Captured
3,557 Casualties Total

Result of Battle: Union Victory

Along with this battle, there was the Battle of West Chester, which resulted when the Army of Ohio was trapped between the forces of the Army of Virginia; They literally found the knotch between two elements of the Army, that, when they realized when they surrounded the enemy army, halted and began to attack.

Battle of West Chester:
Battle of West Chester
USA:
Army of Ohio(94,628 Men, 113 Guns)

CSA:
Army of Virginia(77,370 Men, 100 Guns)

CSA: I, III, IV, and V Corps, Army of Virginia(39,361 Men)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 2,121 Killed, 4,243 Wounded, 1,000 Captured
CSA: 1,958 Killed, 3,917 Wounded

Result: Federal troops fall back into a semicircle formation with the Confederate troops surrounding them.

Second Confederate Attack:
USA: All Infantry and Artillery(66,737 Men, 113 Guns)
CSA: All Infantry and Artillery(60,095 Men, 100 Guns)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 3,224 Killed, 6,447 Wounded, 2,000 Captured
CSA: 3,045 Killed, 6,090 Wounded, 1,000 Captured

Result: Both forces cause the other swide heavy casualties, but eventually the Confederates pull back. However, word soon reaches the Federal commander that the Confederate Western Department's army has arrived on the field, and they withdraw off of the battlefield.

Total Casualties:
USA: 5,345 Killed, 10,690 Wounded, 3,000 Captured, 19,035 Casualties Total
CSA: 5,003 Killed, 10,007 Wounded, 1,000 Captured, 16,010 Casualties Total

Result: Federal Strategic Victory, Confederate Tactical Victory

The Federal army managed to withdraw north, and began marching towards the small town of Exton. However, unbeknownst to them, the Western Department was also heading to Exton to attempt a wide flanking maneuvre, and the vanguards of the armies met in battle in and around the town.

Battle of Exton:
Battle of Exton

USA: Army of Ohio(86,283 Men, 113 Guns)
CSA: Western Department(74,475 Men, 100 Guns)

Main battle:
USA: I, II, V, and VI Corps, Army of Ohio(39,171 Men, 113 Guns)
CSA: I-IV Corps, Western Department(34,422 Men, 50 Guns)

Casualties and Losses:
USA: 1,971 Killed, 3,943 Wounded, 2,000 Captured
CSA: 1,579 Killed, 3,158 Wounded

Total Casualties:
USA: 7,914
CSA: 4,737

Result of Battle: Phyrric Federal Victory

Description: As the Federal army retreated north after the Battle of West Chester, it's lead elements engaged the lead elements of the Western Department, which had decided to "Attack in another direction". The two forces quickly deployed their troops, and the Confederate troops launched their assault. They managed to overwhelm the Federal Left Flank via a flanking assault, in the process taking many prisoners; However, the Federal Reserve moved in at the Double quick and pushed the Confederates back in some of the most intense fighting of the war. The Artillery of both sides played a lethal role as well, with the outnumbered Confederate gunners putting up a fierce bombardment against the Federal lines.

Army positions:
Army of New York: Philadelphia
Army of Ohio: Several miles North-west of Exton
Army of Virginia: West Chester
Western Department: Exton

I think the politicians should make peace.

If the south launched a well coordinated offensive we could likely take them but it is pointless to attack the north. We only wanted to establish our independence.

On the other hand it is unlikely the north can defeat us if we are on the defensive.

I think it is best to call off the war.

Vladimir Fred-nin
07-18-2011, 01:30
I agree. The South has won arguably anyways. :P

Franconicus
07-18-2011, 15:04
Are you kidding? How could the south win? As FK stated, it does not make any sense for the South to invade an occupy the North, even if it would be feasible. An occupation of the bigger North with the larger population would be far too expansive. Therefore, how can the south win or even end war? The longer war takes, the more relevance will be in the resources of the north.

Fisherking
07-18-2011, 18:58
The South didn’t need to occupy the north.

The most likely way for the south to have won was to occupy Washington and convince the politicians that the war was not worth the cost.

With Washington captured and Lincoln dead that would open the way to a settlement.
