View Full Version : The Shogun 2: Screenshot thread
What. No screenshot thread for S2 yet? Come on guys - let's see some interesting screens from those campaigns. I know you're playing. :laugh4:
I'm unsure of the in-game method to capture screens, but if you can't figure it out, use image capturing software like fraps (http://www.fraps.com/). Afterward, host your images on a site like imageshack (https://imageshack.us/) or photobucket (https://photobucket.com/). The latter requires a free account.

Steam has built-in screenshotting now IIRC. Default key should be F12.
I haven't had the presence of mind to take pictures of my campaign yet, I'm too consumed by the game and how much ass it kicks at the moment!

First campaign as Shimazu:
Used navy to drop my main attacking force, consisting of my Daimyo, Son and Heir, and most trusted General, right next to their capital and, despite being massively outnumbered, managed to take the city with what I believe to be acceptable casualties.
The only Sakura survivor was the Daimyo, and I think 10 light cav, who fled to the woods on the right side of the screen. I chased him down and finished him however :D

I started an AAR and then came my first battle.
"Okay, I've got a pile of crap on my screen here that will ruin my battle screenshots, but that's okay, there'll be a button to minimise it. It's F1-F6 in Rome, let's try those. No, okay I'll randomly try other buttons.... No. Oh, I can click that to minimise the minimap perhaps the other bits have something like that? Hmm, no. Okay I'll go on the forums to see if anyone can help..... No."
Stuff this, back to Football Manager for me.
Finished my first campaign as Mori last night.
Overall impressions are that the campaign is beautiful and challenging. Overall I give it a high grade.
Took a while to re-learn some controls.
My only disappoint was that the AI spammed Ashigaru units once I took Kyoto. I developed my unit production buildings and built balanced armies only to be confronted by stack upon stack upon stack of yari. The big battles to hold Kyoto were not interesting at all, but reminded me of FPS zombie killer games where all I had to do was quickly dispatch an enemy unit and turn to quickly dispatch the next to turn and quickly dispatch the next.
The only difficulty was managing the reinforcement system, which was a real bitch when I had to face three armies simultaneously. My reinforcements were coming from the opposite side of the map, and since I was hunkered up tight to defend against overwhelming numbers my units tended to rout together.
So managing the reinforcement system isn't the ideal interesting battle. Much rather have had 20 pro units (experienced, upgraded, led by a 5 star) to fight with my 20.
That niggle aside, here's a shot of Kyoto and some agents. Graphically, very well presented campaign worthy of its ancestor.
https://img857.imageshack.us/img857/5318/2011032200001z.jpg
When you take Kyoto you get a flagship, the Nihon Maru. The naval battles are still somewhat of a mystery to me, even after a dozen or so. Getting a crew to board is a little tricky, and if you get boarded you are likely to lose that ship. In the end I found that there is safety in numbers. I got lucky and caught a Chosokabe army being carried by their fleet, sunk the fleet and the army with it. I learned from their misfortune and had troop transports well supported. The Trade Ship operation is somewhat symbolic, but it works. Developing the foreign trade nodes is essential. I tended to scupper ships I captured, they always seemed to have lower stats than my homegrown boats.
https://img858.imageshack.us/img858/1985/2011032200006.jpg
I was able to complete the campaign with my second Daimyo, my first having lived into his 50s. Honour is essential, seemed to be the most important stat in the game. When Geisha appear they present a real threat to family members. Metsuke are somewhat overpowered, very effective against ninja, geisha, other metsuke.
https://img641.imageshack.us/img641/4874/2011032200004.jpg
Kanesue is the Daimyo's brother, and is the point of teh spear for most military operations. Appointing the right people as commissioners and using them appropriately seemed to help make things work better. I kept Kanesue busy killing for more than 20 years. A geisha stabbed him and he spent some time recovering from the wound, but otherwise he was on the march or defending the frontier.
https://img218.imageshack.us/img218/9656/2011032200005.jpg
As Shogun you get the Great Guard, a hardcore cavalry unit that I found to be quite effective. Get this unit around the backside and charge the rear of an enemy unit that is under fire from flaming arrows and the entire flank will collapse.
In the Battle of Kyoto, where Kanesue fought 7400 men from Uesugi, Chosokabe, and Hatano with 2300, this unit made the difference with a charge from ambush, first to remove a bow unit then to pound the wavering end of the enemy line. The subsequent rout gave my well-battered remaining units time to regroup and rest while reinforcements arrived from across the map, just in time for the last wave of Uesugi.
Cavalry units move very quickly. The units on the field all seem to move much quicker than I remember any movement from the original, but cavalry units haul ass.

No, I left the settings as chosen by the game.
the game screen capture reformats from my wide-screen to the more square format you see here.
I'm not real tech savvy, enlighten me on anti-aliasing.
LeftEyeNine
03-26-2011, 12:09
Um, aliasing is what you "naturally" get as the jagged (pixelated) edges of the visual objects in a game. Anti-aliasing (commonly abbreviated as AA), as you could figure out, is an optional yet almost always supported technology that works by smoothening out of the edges. Enabling it makes a direct performance hit on systems that are not of the highest end. Check this GIF (https://i52.tinypic.com/28i89lg.gif) for a practical comparison.
Although Shogun 2 Total War engine supports AA already (check Graphics options screen for that), it is impossible to make any changes to it for now (probably until a later patch that will bring DX11 support).

Have you used the unit's time-traveling special ability yet? Or does that require a special building upgrade?

So i've been playing around with the Shogun 2 Realism mod. A lot of fun. One of the biggest changes (aside from a ton of gameplay tweaks) is Yari Ashigaru actually fight with Yari, and use their spears in combat. Samurai are buffed and also a lot more important since you can't recruit them until you research a "way of the x" tech. So they're more powerful and also a ton more rare, if you lose a samurai unit it really sets you back a bit. Stats are also completely redone in the mod, providing much longer battles and the chance to enjoy the spectacle of the melee.
Here's a few screens from a Date campaign with Realism. Enjoy!

:laugh4:
Boy I know how that feels. In previous TW games I never felt I had to build a decent navy, but in Shogun 2 you're really asking for it if you don't expand your naval power. A stack of Medium Bunes and bow ships are typically enough to win any sea battle through auto-calc. That is.. unless you run into the heavier hitters. :sweatdrop:
Good luck pushing out the invaders!
Thanks! As I struggle to pull together an army to get rid of them, I will push on. 12 more provinces and I win the campaign!

It helps to have trade routes because you get a bit of line-of-sight along them so you can keep an eye out for fleets with armies if you pay attention.

I always have a full fleet on each side of Honshu, around my westernmost/easternmost province. Granted, I've only played Chosokabe and Shimazu, so those fleets basically protected the west entirely, eventually. Though all the straits and bays in the inland seas between Kyushu, Shikoku and Honshu are a nightmare early on in both campaigns. I had 4 fleets for a while, to be sure not to lose trade income because of surprise wako pirates and instantly go bankrupt.

Thanks. Other than cropping, that shot is actually unaltered/unedited. It was one of those misty winter battlefields where all the trees look white, but there's no snow of the ground. The light was coming from behind, so it gave it that grey scale look.

I will be posting something to the contest, but I was holding off--hoping that the DX11/10.1 fix was going to happen before the submission time is up since I wanted at least one of my two entries from the new game.
Also, I been using a two year old GTX285 GPU, which is serviceable, but have a new GTX560 Ti from Newegg due in this week. The new GPU should allow me to notch the game resolution to my native 1920 X 1200 and force AA through the Nvidia control panel without slowing the game up too much.
Due to a slight miscalculation on my withholding, I got an embarrassingly large tax refund this year, and decided to blow some of it on a new graphics card.
Cheers

I agree, I made that my wallpaper. To me that's probably the single best screenshot from the game I've ever seen.
Heres some pics from my latest Hojo clan campaign.

Hojo forces at the second battle of Sunpu, under the command of Kasahara Ujitane, aka, the Dragon of Sunpu.

Aftermath of the battle of Totomi fields, the Dragon of Sunpu defeats a force twice his size consisting of both Oda and Tokugawa forces - but the price is heavy.

I don't even know where to start with this. The Takeda clan imploded with the death of Takeda Shingen, but only 6 years after this shot his son has united the Hatorri lands and that light blue blob beneath his command. It made me (in the south as the hojo) VERY concerned.
I love this game, narratives pop up out of nowhere and get me attached to my generals and fearing my enemies in a real gameplay sense.

Indeed once my Metsuke donned his white robes he became very hard to resist and in this case the Koku spoke volumes..He took the ill gotten coin and in the process effectively sealed the once mighty Takeda's fate...

I like that last pic the most. All the destruction at the foot of a shinto-shrine.
The war with the Takeda has spiraled into a full fledged realm divide, with the Hojo Alliance consisting of the Hojo, the Oda, the Mori and the Date against the Ashikaga, the Takeda, the Chokosabe. The Christian Sagara (in firm control of Kyushu) and the Ikko-Ikki are also fighting for the Shogunate, surprisingly. It's been one heck of a fight with multiple areas of conflict. The Mori are fighting on Shinkoku and Kyushu against the Sagara and Chokosabe respectively while myself, the Oda and the Date struggle in central Honshu.
Great pics Monk. The shot with your forces entering the river is my Fav here..
How do you get so many friends? I keep making war with everything and everyone eventually =S Usually sometime around turn... 30 or something, everyone hates me =p

You have a good eye with that in-game camera, Monk. Nice shots!

I play with a milder realm divide event which allows me to keep allies past the breaking point. Most clans will still go to war with me and refuse to surrender, but at least this way I can keep my vassals and closest allies intact.
Once i defeated the Oda-Tokugawa, mentioned in my last screenshot post I decided to turtle. I was close to RD (i'd won so many big victories) and I didn't wanna push it so soon. So I spent 40 turns (ten years) turtling and trading with absolutely everyone on the map. That boosted my tech to absurd levels and let me build relations with pretty much everyone to the point that a "super alliance" was possible. I poured most of my efforts into civil tech to get Epic Architecture, and in the process got a lot of the diplomatic bonuses.

Milder realm divide?
Yes, there are a few mods that tone down the realm divide event to not be a complete diplomacy breaker. Like i said, most of Japan will still declare war, but in this way any vassals or (very) good relation allies you've made will have a better chance of sticking with you.
What mod is this? I'd really love from some stronger alliances to last more than half way through the game =p
On a sidenote, I read those AARs of yours, they are pretty interesting and inspiring reads =)

Many of the major mods now incorporate changes to the RD event by default. I know Darthmod completely changes it for example.
The standard, standalone RD mod can be found here: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=436082 - which changes the RD to be a small relations hit (-55 relations) that slowly goes away as time goes by. Mods like this wont prevent clans from declaring war, but they are more than enough to ensure vassals/allies will stay on your side, provided your relations are high enough.
On a sidenote, I read those AARs of yours, they are pretty interesting and inspiring reads =)
 Its always nice to hear people enjoyed them. Shogun 2 is the first TW game in a very long time to inspire some fun narratives for me. If you let yourself get immersed into the atmosphere of the game, it can really shock you in how deeply you're trying to keep certain generals alive, or wary of certain enemies. As an example, my recent Hojo campaign featured a number of heroes who rose to prominence against the Oda clan. When i went to war with the Takeda, many of those heroes died. By the time Realm divide hit, most of my greatest heroes might've been gone, but a new generation was taking their place as the fighting became heavier.
I'm thinking about doing another AAR leading up to the next expansion. Should be fun provided inspiration hits ~D
Thanks for the link and yes, go for it =) I'll be looking forward to that =p
To post some screenies now =D I tested something and came across this:

Battle of Tsu - 1581

https://i.imgur.com/702hq.jpg
A prelude to a more deadly conflict that I'm currently engaged in. The Hatakeyama clan launched an insurection against the Hojo Shogunate and were joined by the Date clan. After months of fighting the bulk of the rebels were destroyed at the battles of Tsu and Iwate. Unfortunately, with the entirety of eastern Japan now firmly united beneath a centralized, Hojo Shogunate, the Oda and Mori clans, controling all of the west have revolted against the Shogunate. The realm is once more divided.

I do love how, after you've claimed the Shogunate, your faction literally gets renamed as such. Its such a small thing, but for players like me who love to immerse in the atmosphere it completely changes the flavor of a campaign.

I couldnt agree more. The loyal Total War players never expected anything big, just some battle field with accurate historical facts. This little name change affects us more than better graphics.

Battle of Koriyama - 1587

Dead are everywhere in the shadows beneath the leaves as the guns of the Shogunate thunder in the distance.
This battle broke the power of the Mori clan in Honshu. Over seven thousand from both sides were lost at the end of the fight.
Not the best shot but I do love the night battles..
Especially as I see the fire arrows arcing across the bows of my other ships to thunder into the decks and bodies of the night blind enemy..3803

What in the world happened there? :O
Christianity, Ikkiism, taxes, war... family died and nuclear bombs all at the same time. Tbh, I have no idea. I think I lost a bonus to happiness and forgot to reset my taxes.
Sp4..
Wow I have made some serious political and economic blunders in Shogun 2 but have never seen more than a couple of provinces at a time getting unhappy..
Might be unique to the co-op mode..what was your partner up to, lol..Might have been internal sabotage!, ;-)
Speaking of AI being a pain..in my current Mori campaign Matsuda have been a great ally so naturally when I saw them go to a siege with inferior numbers I lent a hand..pity they never deployed from this bizarre starting point!!!3855
Oh the AI <3
But yeah as I said. What happened was that I had a pretty serious bonus to happiness and repression and what not and then a lot of stuff happened at the same time, like the bonus going away, something else to have a negative effect all over the country and I think I lost my last family member in a battle a turn earlier, which has a penalty on happiness as well and then I just forgot to set the taxes to a normal level again after 4 turns of very high.
After the fact I realised I should have zoomed in more but I was enraptured by the late afternoon sky as my Hojo army raced to support my Takeda allies against the scourge of the Uesugi Juggernaut..3949
I just finished a Chosokabe campaign recently. Here are two pictures I took toward the end of the campaign.
Here lay some enemy garrison of the Hojo and three of my assauting ashigaru units. Backlit with a burning gate house the ill fated ashigaru entered thru.
https://img560.imageshack.us/img560/6167/woetobeashigaru.jpg
Here is a castle defense of mine. A unit of ashigaru was holding off two units of Katana Calvary. They were doing ok until one unit dismounted and finished off the remaining ashigaru.
Sleeping with da fishes! Gold fishes that is! Ha ha...erm...no.

Finally got it!
after auto battling 3 stacks of medium Bune against it on the fourth go in real time battle I captured the Black Ship..
It nearly killed my fleets and I nearly destroyed it :-)
Now to port spend the 800+ Koku for repair and no longer will Mori rule the waves...Takeda will!...:2thumbsup:4316

They are all very expressive and cinematic mhz100a. I am enjoying them very much. :)
I just played a coop campaign with a friend and saw what was probably my largest battle in Shogun2 yet.

With about 11000 units deployed in total and in the end more than 6000 having died, it was quite a slaughter. It was a shame the AI decided to :ai: after the 3rd stack and pretty much parade around the castle twice before routing again or it might've actually done something with all archers out of ammo and all Samurais having soaked up a lot of arrows.
The stack we had in support was mostly Ashigarus with some Yari cav, which more or less negated the second enemy stack, before being destroyed by the 3rd one.
Fire arrows on light cavalry. Very beautiful.

Only my 2nd ever successful campaign, 1st on hard and only possible thanks to Maltz's tips on military access and frogbeastegg's guide on using agents and foreign trade effectively. A shame halfway through this campaign the FotS patch came which ruined a bit of the fun from using Nanbans and cut down on the graphical fidelity and number of battle speeches I got to enjoy.

sp4, I like the second one the most.
Pharoah, that looks great, but I think it would be better to crop the image a bit (cut away the unit cards at the bottom).
Maltz, I really like that last picture you posted.
mhz1000a, great stuff :2thumbsup:

I decided to make an imgur account as I kept on losing track of my images.
Here's a screenshot from an old campaign I was trying out.

Nice, atmospheric shot Broski. I'm always a sucker for low lying fog. Also, it looks like the four samurai on the right are catching an errant sunbeam peaking through the clouds as their mons are lit up much brighter than the others.

Yup, the sun was at this weird angle.
Though they're Bow Ashigaru.

I haven't even completed one TW campaign in any game mod or no mods. So for the next few weeks in my spare time I'll play my H/H Chokosabe campaign and complete it.
Edit: I'm using HedgeKnights UAI mod v2.5 to make the ai more optimized and provide more challenges in the campaign.
More screenshots will arrive!

I've been out pike and shotted by Drakarys1402 who commands the Otomo.
I command the Uesugi.
The sloppy use of cavalry as always by me which leads to disaster on my already outmatched infantry compared to his vetted Ashigaru. I win the skirmish with 2 Bow Monks and 3 Vetted Matchlock Ashigaru comapred to his few Bow Ashigaru and vetted Tercos.
I should've either used Oda and out pike shot him or Melee rush.
There is the skirmish option but that requires careful micro management which I did poorly leaving my general to getting rear charged too.
