I didn't have a chance to verify this, someone could enlighten me:

I invade Rome and the Papacy States. These guys only have many seige weapons, but doesn't have anything else. The Egyptian armies roll over them quite easily. I even seiged Rome and got it. The Pope got away and then came back twice, each time with about 2000 men, with good infantry and horse units.

Question is: does it come back more than twice?

I didn't have a chance to see if it comes back more time, because I got my 60% conquest right after that. I saved the Papacy as the last invasion to totally control all territories West of Flander/Venice line.

Perhaps it doesn't worth the trouble, but get Rome is kinda prestigeous.

Welcome Lady Ann. You have certainly been busy today. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

The papacy is trouble. They will always come back...again and again and again. The Pope will find a way to return as the Catholics of Europe need their pope.

What I eventually did in my HRE campaign was when the Pope reappeared in Rome, I razed every building in Rome and then abandoned it. Why? First, to get the florin, and second, to deny the Pope any infrastructure to build on his army. This left him with his initial rebel army and a wait of years until he could build upon it.

Either that, or leave a big spearman/feudal seargant army in the regions, the pope will mostly attack with an 80% cavelry army... should be fun & easy to win, as well as upping your generals level & some other positive stuff...

It is quite true: the Pope is an all-cav man. Actually, it switched from all seige weapon to all cav. I did the same: I sent in a spear unit for each horse unit the Pope had, and top on that was a cav unit for each 2 horse unit, and then the usual archer/abalester combo. Defending Rome is easy. But I would say having to defend it all the time would drain my army if I attack the papacy early in the game, so perhaps you confirmed that it was sound to wait till the end.

The best strategy here is to conquer Papal states, Tuscany and Naples (of course with at least 300 good soldiers in each) and Pope will not pose any threat with he's comebacks (his army isn't really anything special).
Anyway that's what I do, and it's not that bad.
However i must say that having Rome gives you certain feeling in game :-)

Perhaps because it was Egyptians who got Rome. It could be different if it was a Catholic faction who took it. (BTW, I got all Italy early in the game because Italy was challenging Egypt's fleet supremacy, yet I still have Papacy Revival).

The Pope is a pain in the butt, and not worth taking out, I have found. As mentioned he always comes back and his stacks get bigger and better. This is a distraction. Furthermore, his two territories aren't worth much. . . .

However, I do confess, that when papal inquistors start to show up and try my generals, when the Pope calls for an attack that is stupid. . . I give in and take that idiot out with grim satisfaction. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

sorry but this flue is killing me so my sanity is questionable http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

however i was tring to say, that you should conquer Naples, Tuscany and Papal States and leave Pope in Rome without attacking him. He won't invade your provinces since he doesn't have large enough army to do that... blah blah http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

ok enough talk, my head hurts and my nose is leaking pure H2O so i better get in bed http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wacko.gif
