View Full Version : The Art of Posting

Hey Guys,

I want to know about the following:

Quoting: How do you make someone's text from a previous post appear in your post in that bold italicised format you see when someone is, er quoting? (Just a note, I recognise that in high volume, i.e. quoting almost the entire post - this can be pretty damn annoying)

Pasting: How do I stick a picture on a post? Do I have to consult a moderator for approval? (I'd imagine I do. I've noticed that you can contact some moderators by e-mail and others you can't).

Signatures: Er, what does that do? Is that how people who have deep and meaningful phrases or quotes after their names got them there?

Please let me know.

Thanks for your help.

Azrael

in the top right corner above someones message there's a button that says quote. click that, it'll come up with a modified version of the reply page. the text you're quoting will appear in one box, you can edit out what you're not refering to in there, anything in that box is bold and italic. you add your reply in the other box as normal it'll appear beneath the quoted text.

You can quote manually using the ibcode, linked to under the box you add your reply in but this won't cite who you're quoting.

the ib codes will tell you how to add images, basically you need to know the address of the image then use the [img] code as per instructions. Anyone can post images so far as i'm aware, you don't need approval. Most mods emails are available i think, on the staff page (http://www.totalwar.org/site/staff.shtml) of .org if not in their profiles on the ikonboard.

as to sigs, yes, look in your profile there's a box in there somewhere to write something profound (or not)

I've been trying to think of something profound for my sig, but my brain is failing me. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

I have the same problem, can't seem to come up with something nice. Can't you guys create some kind of database for them like with the avatars? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
If not, give some nice tips? Or else do some sort of competition... ? Or give away prices for the most original signature...?
Aaah, so many good ideas, so little time... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

sounds like a reasonable idea,

IDEAS>
a quote from your favourite TV show,
a quote from some famous general,
a clean joke of some kind,
or like pape you could include a quote from someone's posts here...

my quotes are
1. - a parody on an insult thrown at me, http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
and
2. - a quote from Dilbert and Dogbert, http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

a picture sig is not a tatoo just find something and after using it, if you dont like it, get a new one.

or make your own if you know how.

speaking of which, HEY MODERATORS: what is an acceptable size for a sig? you better reply, cause if you dont i'll make a post out of this question(big threat there&#33http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif.

Test sigs:

1) Give me liberty, or give me de...uh, nevermind.

2) A coward dies a thousand deaths, a hero dies but once...so why do we waste our time training the hero?

3) Yes. - Kosh

4) No. - Kosh

Good question Postino. I don't know if we have a limit on image sizes. I'll have to check. The avatar images are about 4k. I wouldn't go much larger for a sig image since there are many modem users. As a guess (and most likely wrong), I'd say keep it no higher than 10-15k. I'll try to get an official answer though.

i was meaning measurment, not file size. i would expect ppl to find their own hosts. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

is a picture the size of the text box for replies to big for a sig? is a breadbox size pic too small?

The file still has to be downloaded to the PC that is displaying the webpage with your sig image. You put a 1mb image in your sig and the 56k crowd is waiting way too long for your image to download. I'm sure they'd send you fan mail too. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Image dimensions? Keep it small enough that we don't get horizontal scrollbars - 400-500 pixels wide(?).

we basically have an unofficial policy re posting pics. Our very own Mith is notorious (in a bad way) for posting H-U-G-E images in the Babbiest Bab thread. So far the .Org has been tolerant of large images, but if enouhg people complain about it, it gets taken down. If you have a large image, and you're not sure, best to just provide a link to it rather than make people have to load and reload it every time they open the thread.
it'd be nice if we didn't have to regulate this (ie. come up with a policy), too, and could just depend on our members' consideration for keeping their images clean in size and easy, in regard to how the forums work. as long as everyone behaves themselves, i doubt any hard rules will be made about this.

In principle images in sigs are supposed to be about the size of large postage stamps, no bigger (shows how long i've been doing htis job...). Those of us on T1s don't mind, but on 56k endless images are a nightmare. and large sig images break the flow of the text. When it comes to posting images as part of the actual message Soly's hit the nail on the head.

The guidelines for sig images are:

Max 150W*100H pixels and 10 kb, no sound.
