Nice Thanks for the tip, it looks great. I have some ideas about creating one or two Welsh battles. I grew up near several Norman castles, and it would be cool to see them in MTW.

Must say that I've recently got more interested in the historical campaigns/battles as my enthusiasm for campaign game micromanagement has waned. (and my PC isn't powerful enough for multiplayer...are you listening, Santa?)
But why-o-why can't we play the historical battles as either side? On trying Hastings, I felt badly let down to find I couldn't play as the English and change the course of history.
Konnichiwa,
You can play the battles on either side. It's a fairly easy textedit in the BDF files.
The relevant files are in the MTW game folder subfolder Battle/batinit/Historical battles. You may want a given battle available for both sides at all times. Lets take the Battle of Bannockburn as example. Make a copy of the Battle of Bannockburn folder in the historical battles folder. Rename the folder to something like Battle of Bannockburn Eng. Open the dir and rename the BDF file to Battle of Bannockburn Eng.bdf (directory name and bdf name must be identical).
Open the BDF file with a texteditor (like notepad), find these lines:
Player::Robert the Bruce 6 6 LOCAL Scottish 0 false 23159 32289 102 PAGAN_CULTURE
Player::King Edward II 5 5 ARTIFICIAL English 0 true 37771 37198 269 CHRISTIAN_CULTURE
and replace it by these:
Player::Robert the Bruce 6 6 ARTIFICIAL Scottish 0 false 23159 32289 102 PAGAN_CULTURE
Player::King Edward II 5 5 LOCAL English 0 true 37771 37198 269 CHRISTIAN_CULTURE
Yes you only swap Local and Artificial. Local is the human player, artificial is the/a computer controlled army.

Save and start the historical battle menu.
The same can be done for 8 armies in 1 battle (you can play as 1 of the 8), historical campaign and you can fancy up the battle with custom art and descriptions.
You can download this battle as simple example:

Have fun.

I`ve managed to change the course of history in that battle by playing as the French. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

does the battle appear in the list?,
try downloading, extracting and installing as per instructions again, maybe a file got corrupted.
These 2 files work on my computer just fine.

Excellent Many thanks to TosaInu, Barocca etc. for the info. I guessed (wrongly) that there must be some hard-coded battle AI. Seems odd that the option to choose your side isn't available within the game.
Anyway - I'm off to change the course of history by winning as English. Rather than by losing as the French...
just reminding everyone to grab this excellent battle
:D
