Link to Main Hall thread (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=7;t=1470)

My appologies for the manner in which I have chosen to participate to a limited extent on threads within the other forums however I see no other way at this time.

I haven't actually completed any campaigns as I get tired of the excessive micromanagement towards the middle period of the game. Moving hundreds/thousands of non-stackable assassins/agents/priests/alims/..., the tedium of naval warfare, constantly checking if my governors have developed some vice (searching for replacement governors) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif none of it appeals to me http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

Unfortunately I am somewhat of a perfectionist and feel the need to micromanage fully to optimise the performance of my faction, eventually it stops being FNU

I am hoping for a much improved user interface when they release an addon which will cater to players like me http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

I've not actualy completed a single campaign yet- mostly due to the reasons you've outlined above.

Stackable agents are a must- as are making your assassins only kill targets whilst in your province. I'm fed up of losing my top kilers due to them chasing their target half way accross the map http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

Finished my Campaign

As the English, I conquered Scotland and Ireland, France, some of Germany, Spain, Portugual, almost all of North Africa...

And my campaign ended in Defeat in the last year.

This was mainly because I started in the Late era (and more specifically because I didn't conquer ALL of Europe, Asia and North Africa).

For all your efforts, you get a handsome little poster of your forces, lands in flames, with a great big DEFEAT sticker on it.

But it was a good way to start. Got a much better feel for building, technology trees, what Units to build where, possible routes of expansion.

Since then, I've had a few Campaigns, one of my best, as the Holy Roman Emperor, owning almost all of the map, brutally disrupted by the sound advice of Not playing your pre-patched save games once you've patched.

Currently, starting bright and early in the Early Era, thanks to a few successfull Crusades, my English forces are set to sweep together like a set of Red Curtains over all the suckers in the middle.

Or at least that how it should work in principle.

(Glorious Acheivements is a fantastic mode of play)

I think the more appropriate question here is How many campaigns have you started where you haven't been gangbanged by the French, Hungarians, Danish, Italians, Almohads, Polish, Margaret Thatcher, Steve Jobs, and the 1984 Red Sox within a century and have actually survived to the 60% mark whereupon 19 of your provinces rebelled with technology far surpassing anything anyone has achieved and destroying your empire inside of a decade?

My answer is one. (Can you tell I always play the HRE? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif )

I have completed 2 campaigns since the patch.

As the EnglishI swept through Spain and Africa, sweeping all aside with the crimson tide
The Egyptian campaign was a lot harder. The units they get don't seem as ... robust (?) After rolling over my Muslim brothers, Europe was mine =D

I agree the micro-management is tedious. But then, if the options weren't available I would likely complain about lack of detail lack of choices to freely make having ONE version of history rammed down my throat...etc. Stackable agents would be a very nice addition

Fortunately, when the tedium of a campaign gets me down I can go play an historical or custom battle 'til the cobwebs clear http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I've played 1 since the game came out in August and I'm still playing it. Or, I may have to restart it since I've installed the patch. Too bad, I was just about to get my butt kicked too. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

BTW, my campaign is HRE too.

I've patched my game and can still play my saved game without any obvious problems.

Does this make me a bad person ? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

My first and only completed campaign was with the Danes, Early Normal. At that time had had not read the warnings on the forums about battling fellow Christians, and ploughed into the HRE. Then France, Britain, the Italians, Poles, Hungarians, and Almohads all fell under my sway. I reached 60% in North Africa.

Now I am playing the Spanish, Early Normal, and since the patch have found the game to be more challenging. The Pope actually leaves Rome this time. Okay, so he attacks me and expects me to be excommunicated if I lift a finger in relatiation. Plus I faced a simultaneous French crusade. I am so caught up in the strategy (the campaign element) that I rarely play out the battles any more.

Er.....none.

I keep finding new ways to edit and make the game cooler....and keep restarting campaigns. So far I've put the start date back to 800ad, increased bowman ammo, changed unit availability per timeline (I want longbowmen early - the bleedin Welsh get em.....) and screwed with provence ownership more times than I can remember.

Right now it's 1253 and I'm roleplaying, not invading all over for the sake of it but trying to maintain a balance and be a good little king.

I am playing my campaign the same way Swoop. None of this @#&% the torpedos, full speed ahead business for me.

Firmly agree Gregoshi, it's just way more fun to start thinking about the games little nuances and complicated politics than to just steam at full speed over Europe......although the way AI empires grow huge and roll over everywhere until they eventually collapse under their own weight kinda spoils it a little......

I've yet to see a large empire survive intact for more than 100 years......

One campaign I was playing....well it went very weird. France owned Italy but the spaniards had taken over France while the Almohads owned Spain. HRE was wiped out and the Hungarians owned all of Germany, what was the Polish empire and everything as far as Istanbul. The Turks and Egyptians had basically swapped positions and the Novgorodians were just hangin on to Finland. Oh and Denmark did nothing....as usual.

Started six, finished none, best I managed was getting to 1440 as The Egyptians. Given up on games I've started as England, Denmark and Spain sometime between 1200 and 1300, due to the micromanagement 'mares mentioned above, elsewhere and to the side. Started one as Italy, made ground West, East and North then turned South and got whopped by SuperPope.

Currently at around 1150 of a HRE post-patch game. The AI is attacking me on all fronts. Seems more challenging than pre-patch. Good game so far, sadly the forests of agents are descending to obscure the view.

I've completed one in 3 months. The rest either ended due to the CDT bug, or just didn't feel right... I hope someone out there knows what I mean by that.

well i've completed one as the english.

Other than the British Islands and Ireland, i took france, most of HRE, spain, africa and nibbled a bit of turks.
then it ended. victory in GA.

also another time also as the english i had conquered nearly whole of europe when suddenly almost all provinces revolted and then i hadn't saved for a hundred years. i gave up that savegame.

Now i play the turks and have europe in crabclaws, about to win it

None at all http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I usually play a hundred or so turns then get an urge to play a different faction/setting etc.

None at all.
I´ve played several campaigns. I got a problem, when my faction is more or less invincible, i feel that the game isn´t funny and begin other campaign with other faction.

That's what's great about playing on Expert setting--you think your faction is totally unbeatable, then one of those Muslim factions you haven't completely wiped out yet shows up on your borders with 30,000 men (no joke) and teaches you otherwise.

That's what happened in one campaign game I THOUGHT I was gonna win--HRE, controlled England, all of Europe, Russia, Spain, almost all of Africa, and all the Mediterranean isles, and my armies were pushing into Turkey against the Egyptians--suddenly about a billion Egyptians show up and crush my two best armies and shove me all the way back to Poland before I could stop 'em. It was great http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

As I'm sure is the case for alot of people, I havent actually won a campaign, since as soon as I reach 60% I get royally gang-raped. I'm beginning to think the key to success is a ludicrously strong navy, so as to hold the seas and the ability to instantly be anywhere at any time. This worked well for me as the Egyptians, until I had to take the Russian territories, after which for the next 40 years I would have at least 4 provinces initiate uber revolts. Needless to say this spread my army rather thin, so I quit.

I have finished two - English/Normal ended in defeat although I was nearly at the 60% mark. Spanish/Normal ended in total victory - that was a fun campaign.

I got tired of a recent Italian/Expert campaign, and am now starting a Danish/Expert. Haven't explored the GA option yet.

I've only completed one campaign to the end out of maybe eight games. It was as the English on a GA game starting from the Early.

I've just completed my first campaign as the Englsih http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I beat all opponents by about 100 achievement points- which was nice.

It asked me as I'd conquered 60% of Europe if I wanted to end the game and call it a minor victory but I carried on to try and rid mainland Europe of the Spanish/Turks.

In the last 20 turns the Papacay had a pop at me and urged all of Christiandom to attack me Then the re-emerging Almohads invaded Scotland/Ireland and the Germans re-apeared. I managed to crush the Almohads and rid Great Britain of all invaders and push The Papacy out Of Italy and forced them to retreat to Sicily http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

i think I did quite well for my first game but plan to do much better next time round.

Can anyone recommend a faction to play next ?

I have the same problem as the original poster. I had played 5 pre-patch campaings always trashing them after year 1200 (I prefer the early age). Aster the patch I started a new campaing with the Spanish. I actually managed to complete it and win. My tactic: after 1200 I just pressed the end turn button http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Finished my first one last night.

Easy, English, Early. Domination by 1248.

Any suggestions for a second campaign?

I haven't finished a single one either. Furthest I got was with the Byzantines, around 1350 or so. That was before the patch. I've started like 12 games or so.

I have played 2 campaigns on easy mode... cheated one (just to see what is out there...) quite funny to bribe every opponent.

The 2nd camapign, with the English (also world domination) I did not cheat. Got to 60% with me controlling Western Europe, western North-Africa, and Europe as far east as Serbia, Hungary, Poland, Prussia and Sweden. I was getting involved in a war of attrition with the Egyptians (the only other domdinant power)... I quit as soon as I got the 60% as I was quickly runnig out of money (way to much upkeep, as I had a huge number of troops all over the map, to squash rebellions)...

I've done quite a few now.. started with the HRE and I think it took me about a week to finish that, though I'd not read the manual much and was wondering what all those weird scrolls were in each province I conquered. And good Lord, the rebellions I had Ahh what it was like to be a newbie http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I then played as the Italians and loved this campaign. I had North Italy, Serbia, Moldavia, Volhynia, Pomerania, Prussia and Sweden for god knows how long, was *never* attacked by anyone at all - I was such a good friend to everyone (whilst sending a dozen spies into their provinces behind their backs http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif ) And then I got the urge to conquer and had it all wrapped up pretty quickly.

Afterwards I played as the French, the Elmos and last week was the turn of Byzantium, where I lived out my ethos - If you're good to me then I'll be good to you, but if you attack me then I shall wipe you off the map utterly. Those poor Russians and Polish never knew what hit em.

And finally, at the weekend I played my first GA game as the Spanish, and my first starting in the late period and it was bloody good fun too, think I'll be doing more of those now. I'm starting to get the hang of knowing when other factions are preparing to attack me too, and ramping up my war efforts to crush them utterly. Great fun

Hmm.. as for my next campaign choice, maybe it's time to show a bit of patriotic pride and try being the English... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I got nearly to the end of an English campaign then had so many revolts that it became unplayable. And the revolts had some pretty hard a$$ armies involved as well.

I've completed 3 full campaigns from the early period (Danes, Italians, Polish) and 1 from the high period as the Swiss. All were GA, and I only won one of them (Italians)

i cannot understand why some people cry 'realism in the game' and then they cry ' i cannot micromanage 50 spies/emissaries/assasins' and '10 provinces revolted and i had to start crying and start a new campaign' WELL FACE IT , emperors at that time had a lot more to face , more plots , SUCCESFUL assasination attempts against em , more spies and double agents , and they couldnt just press the button and make 500 strong soldiers in a province that was about to revolt. if you dont like the realism play chess or something.

anyhows i ve finished the total domination with almohads ( at easy this one) , byzantines , french , italians , HRE , and i m currently playing egyptians. the only faction i lost was the english because i spread my armies too thin to repell the turks out of europe and after i got engaged in war with many oponents my trade collapsed and got minus incomes , as a result i got a lot of revolts and in the end a general put an end to my stupid leadership with a civil war which i lost http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif...it was nice though ( although most of my kings were crazy inbreds with big ears having the ugliest woman in the UK as a girlfriend http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Um, not quite. First off, you'll find nobody who wants 100% realism, as that is impractical. We simply want a good mix of the two. Furthermore, I'm not sure what history books you've been reading, but last I checked, never in history has the emperor micromanaged his empire. He has governers to do that for him, also advisors and maybe a senate. You dont seem to understand what many of the MTW gamers want. We want an ultimately fun game with a tangible sense of historical realism.
