View Full Version : Updated Tech Tree?

Is there somewhere to see the latest tech tree? The only one I can find is the glossy diagram that came in the game box.

However, it seems that the new patch has made changes to the Tech Tree, including limiting certain units to later periods (unless I'm misreading the original - but I see no mention of Period in it). And I'm fairly sure that I used to be able to create Longbows early?

I can't find any details of this - can't see it in the patch Read Me, nor does there seem to be a button in the game itself to view the tree (seems an obvious feature to me).

Can someone please point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance.

Does no-one know this?
Or is it just too dumb a question to be bothered answering?

i'll make some enquiries..
(it could take a few days - round trip email generally does, especially this close to a weekend)

No such thing in the Entrance Hall as a dumb question, NorseGod. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I'm not aware of an updated post-patch tech tree, but I can see the need for one. Someone around here was talking about making a PDF version, as the one we have in the downloads section on-site is pre-patch and too small to be useable.

Brother barocca will help us out on this, I'm sure.

don't cheer too loud,

it could well be that an updated tech tree has not been made yet,
meaning some poor soul is going to have make one...

(but thats what the inmates down in the dungeon are there for) :D

Good old dungeon-beasts http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Glad the question wasn't too dumb.

Risking my new-found street cred on an all-or-nothing basis:

I have read the patch Read Me - I may have missed it - but as far as i can see it doesn't mention that any units cannot be built until later in the game.

So is this intentional or a new bug?
Or did I miss something in the documentation?

And btw thanks for your help:)

It seems intentional since all the units involved show up roughly when they should historicly. By the way you also loose the ability to build some units. The Byzantines loose the ability to build Varangian Guards. There may be others but I know that one's in. It's always weird to learn that the long bow was invented later then the crossbow since you expect the mechanical one to be newer. It's an example of a tech being perfected just before it goes obsolete, like steam locomotives.

There seems to be some oddities in new techs as well.

Present game: gunpowder has arrived...bell foundry does not give bombards. Could this be like ppl getting the compass event and still being unable to build the ships that ought to appear with it?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the tech tree hasn't changed, just the time when units become available (1204 etc..).

I know this is posted else where, but it seems silly that we can build upgrades that don't produce units. I.E. I cant build Fuedal Knights yet, but I can in 40 years so I'll build the building for units that don't exist now.

Maybe they should include a 'seer' strategic agent to justify it. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

ROFL rpasell Then we could add Merlin to the hero list, alongside Robin Hood.

Checked the new era req's at the Assembly.

You're right rpassel; can't build the units til Late http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
By then with the foundaries I've built, I could probably out gun BOTH sides at Borodino http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Actually it makes more sense that you have to build up the infrasturcture and years of training before radical changes appear large enough to field units.

I am sure there are many weapons in testing that are radically different and better then current ones but may not be available for many years (particulary fighter aircraft) or may just end up being shelved.

So before you can field particular units it makes sense that your empire has had a few years in developing the weapons and prior to that the infrastructure to develop these implements.

Also it wasn't so much that the longbow was a super weapon. It was the change in the society that allowed the formation of a special class to train and use the weapon (Yeoman). If for instance the French had formed a special social class to handle the crossbow history may have been different.

You have to bear in mind that this is a game. When you can build something that allows unit X you should get it then, not later in my opinion. Reality is one thing, playability is more important - especially if the reality in question is only documented in some corner of the internet.

Hopalongbunny mentioned checking the era reqs at the assembly - am I really supposed to have to do that to know how the tech tree works?

Sorry, but that's very poor. If it can't be built into the game then it should at least be documented in the files that come with the patch.
Up until I read that comment I was wondering if it was a bug since it was (or appeared to be) undocumented that I couldn't build Longbows in Wales for example.
