Hi all,

I have a question- if the Polish faction are catholic, can build churches and train inquisitors, why can they not create crusades? They have a tough enough time of it as it is....

(i've played them twice post patch and haven't been able to build a chapter house- or this a bug?)

I am not sure if this was with the Polish (Might have been the Danes), but i also remember playing with a Catholic faction recenty that could not create Crusades either. If it is a bug then hopefully it will get fixed, but if it isn't then why on earth should soem Catholc faction get to crusade and others not. Just a bit unfair if you ask me.

Thanks

I do not know how realistic MTW was supposed to be, but this seems to be accurate historically. Poland was in quite different situation than western entities. As the “guardian of Christianity” it was surrounded from the East by non-catholic nations. Mother Russia, Ottomans, Turks and “Tatars”, not to mention revolts of Cossacks, and conflicts with Templars and Knights of the Holly Cross were constant threat to polish borders. Yet from the West there was no help, and even the Holly German Empire was trying to reshape its border with Poland. Probably one of the most profound moments of these times was the battle of Grunwald (BTW, it should show up in the historic battles selection) in the summer of 1410.
Therefore, Poland was in no position to spare military power to send on Crusades, or for that matter on any military expeditions of that magnitude, when the nonbelievers were right there. From my knowledge of history, Poland never engaged in any way in crusades. We have to remember too, that crusades in MTW are not what the historians would describe as “real” crusades. I might not be correct on that but I think that there were only three major crusades, an their goal was always the Palestine, Jerusalem and the surrounding area, known as the motherland of Christianity.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the Org, SmokWawelski.

That's a nice bit of information to share with us too.

Yes, the Poles actually destroyed the Teutonic Knights http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Thanks for that info SmokWawelski.

In gameplay term surely a kingdom on the edge of christianity would need more crusades to convert the heretics and unbelievers? seems like a crusade would've been a great way to rouse the masses into impromptu armies.

- also Brother Derfel, you're right its also the Danes who can't get crusades, shame cos the danes are pretty cool . and it is a bit unfair on them http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

Just out of interest about crusades I can remember the following without looking them up,it has been customary to describe the Crusades being eight:
The first 1095 - 1101
The second by Louis VII 1145 - 1147
The third conducted by Phillip Augustus and Richard I 1188 - 1192
The fourth 1204 (Constantinople)
The fifth 1217 (Egypt)
The sixth when Frederick II took part 1228 – 1229
The seventh led by Louis IX 1249-52
The eighth also under Louis IX 1270

..and a few others of dubious nature called by the pope including against England under John, and the Albegensian crusade against heretics. Obviously there were others but these are all I can remember.

Just to confirm, yes, this is deliberate. The Danes and the Poles cannot build crusades. The discussion, when the game first launched, about whether the Danes went crusading was fearsome to behold... but even after this, we decided to stick with our original opinion that neither country had enough Frequent Crusader miles, so to speak. So the Danes and the Poles remain interestingly different from other countries, and can't go on crusades.

Hope you're enjoying the game even without Polish crusades...

Of course most of us are enjoying the game Gil.

There was a saying amongst the programmers I worked with that I think applies here:

I never saw a line of code I didn't want to re-write.

It is human nature to want to change things and at the same time be resistant to change imposed by others. Humans http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

It's not too hard to active Polish crusades. In the folder c:\program files\medieval - total war open up the file crusader_build_prod13.txt and scroll down to where it says CHAPTER_HOUSE and then scroll to the end of that line. There should be a list of factions. These are the factions that can build chapter houses. Just change { ARAGONESE, ENGLISH, FRENCH, GERMAN_HRE, ITALIAN, SPANISH } to look like { ARAGONESE, ENGLISH, FRENCH, GERMAN_HRE, ITALIAN, SPANISH, DANISH, POLISH } and there you go. Hope I aint getting that wrong.

Has anyone tried letting the Poles declare jihads too? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif

Quote[/b] (Gregoshi @ Dec. 01 2002,12:07)]I never saw a line of code I didn't want to re-write.
There are plenty of lines of code in Medieval which strike mortal terror into my heart, and which I'm therefore quite prepared to let well alone. My one hope is that they didn't realise I was looking at them...

Thanks for the official confirmation.

Am still definately enjoying the game, and especially the challenge of Poland beset on all sides with multiple four/five way wars http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif

... am tempted by the chapter house edit though http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif (cheers for that PatrickNeil)..wonder what type of crusader knights they get....

Thanks for fantastic game CA
