If you are having problems with framerates, even after playing with the DirectX memory settings (mine is currently set to 16Mb), you might want to try to download the latest devices drivers for any devices that are sharing the IRQ with your video card. In my case, it was my sound card (Creative Labs SBLive5.1) that was causing the problem.

It would appear that the older driver did not play nicely with the other drivers that were sharing the IRQ.

Thanks to HAL layer in Win2k, a user cannot manually change the IRQ configuration like the older version of Windows. The only alternatives are to physically move the card (which some people have done here with some success) and hope the HAL reconfigures it, or to reinstall Win2k with a different hardware profile (non-APCI).

On my Athlon 1.1Ghz with Nvidia Geforce2, I can run the game in 1024x768 with default troop size and smoke/fauna turned off. Before upgrading the sound card drivers, 800x600 with small unit size would only run smoothly on some maps, on the rest it was choppy and quite annoying. It was so bad that I had to change to 640x480 if I knew I had some larger battles coming up... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

Hope this helps out anybody else who is having problems...
