satisfying factions

I have been playing the game for a while now, and I have noticed that there are some factions that are more satisfying to play then others. I just have more fun playing certain factions because of the battles are fun and challenging to fight and the political climate is tense. Some of the more interesting factions for me include the Holy Roman Empire, Spanish, English, French, and the Polish. The Factions that I dislike playing with the most include the Italians, Byzantines, and any of the Islamic factions. What are the most preferred factions of the forum population and what can I do to improve gameplay.

For some bizarre reason I enjoy the HRE even though every other faction hates you and goes after you, but it makes it more fun. The Spanish are cool because you can try to accomplish the reconquista. The Turks are fun since you get to bring about the end of Byzantium. I have alot of fun using the cheat that lets you play as rebels, usually I'll just pick a group of historical rebels like the Scots and see how long I can keep them free.

I really honestly can't stand to play as any of the Catholic factions, although I admit I drool at the thought of Gothic Knights. Basically I love Byzantium and Novgorod/Russia. The orthodox factions play completely opposite of the Catholic factions, they don't have to worry about that doddering fool who runs Rome, and they have some strong units if you can leave the spear mentality behind.

The Turks can be fun too if you can get your hands on the Janissary units http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

The most rewarding factions for me are the English, French, Burgundian(in a campaign mod), the Danes and the Spanish.

I don't enjoy any of the Islamic factions particulary, and although I do enjoy the Byzantines and Russians, they are not my Favourite.

I dislike the HRE and the Polish though, mainly cos as the HRE everybody else hates you and as the polish you can not lauch crusades and are traped between the Russians/Hoard and the HRE.

I prefer to play factions that have some natural boundaries like sea or mountain range. However, my next game will be either Polish or HRE. I want to use these great Retainers or the heavy knights of HRE. I never played any Muslim nation, and it looks to me like a totally new experience.

Only on my second campaign, but have played the almohads and currently the byzantines. I liked the almohads, but i did the newbie stuff so couldnt finish it. Now with the byzantines im owning the seas and have some nice staging areas around the map from bribes. Do want to try a catholic faction though ill probably stay excommunicated most of the time. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

I would say

The Danes - Poor starting position, and the lack of crusades make them very challenging.

The Italians - Fun to build a great trading empire with rich provinces, plus Italian Light Infantry are a great unit.

The Hungarians (early mod) - Just plain challenging

I don't play campaigns as much as I do custom battles, just because I don't have enough time.

but

English: Safe on their isle after taking Scotland and Ireland (I usually take Norway and Sweden too). Have fun with longbows and billmen.

HRE: I get a very medieval feel by playing them prolly because of their heavy cav units and constant war.

Any muslim nation: Fun with janissaries, a little challenging fighting off crusades.

I am looking forward to playing as Byz or Novgorod to see the diff with an orthodox faction (and I wanna see the horde http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif )

Easy one here: English. You see... THOSE STUPID FRENCH CRUSADES ROT And as the English, well, no French crusades. In addition: it is just cool to watch Longbowmen go at it.

Steppe Cav, surprisingly useful even in the later periods. I find myself using it all the time if I control the eastern territories too.

I like all the factions but find the Muslim ones can be unsatisfying in GA mode because of their Jihads. If you're succesful early on there is nothing to retake and it just becomes a conquest game.

For me, the most satisfying faction would be the Danes. I just get a kick thinking that I'm playing the Vikings. I enjoy having battles where the main strategy is to charge straight ahead with my fearless warriors and bring the Norse way of life to the rest of decedent Europe.

To be fair, I really haven't played the other factions much but the Danes are certainly fun.

I had an army of 15 units of longbows and 1 unit of suped-up Swiss armoured pikes and attacked a mainly peasent army.
