can u start a crusade and if u can how do u go about it

In a province with high zeal build a keep, church, and then a chapter house. When the chapter house is done you'll be able to build a crusade unit, it looks like a cross. After 4 years a crusade unit will pop up in the province. To activate the crusade you pick it up and drop it on a non-catholic land, though you can also drop it on a catholic land that's under excomunication. (When you drag the crusade unit over a viable objective it will light up.)

There are more rules and regullations on how how you absorb troops 'into' this unit and how it travels to its objective but this will get you started.

Build a chapter house which will allow you to make a crusade piece.

Pick up the crusade unit and the areas on the map which are valid targets will be white.Just drop your piece on your target and the crusade will be made.You can add armies to it if you wish by drag/dropping on to the crusade unit, then you must move the crusade manually through a preset(ish) path towards your target or via a quicker sea route.(Same was as invading Ireland)

Try building inquisitors. You need to make a church, then a monastery. If you're playing as a Muslim faction, you need a grand mosque so you can make Imams. Just make sure you send your crusades / jihads before the high period; right now I think my highest zeal is somewhere around 12%. You don't necessarily need high zeal, just make sure to send your crusade through all other Catholic factions before it reaches its target. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Increase zeal by placing inquisitors in the province in question...I think that's what mr dojo was hinting at. Catholic bishops will also increase zeal, though not as much as an inquisitor. The good thing about inquisitors is that they will also improve a province's loyalty.

P.S. I usually will add some of my own units to the crusade, once it's built and targeted, to increase its chance of success.

Sorry for the play on words but the main way to increase the zeal in a province is with a unit called an Inquisitor. You can build them after constructing a monastery.

Do you need to have high zeal to kick start the crusade?

You do not need high zeal to start a crusade but I have found that the more Zeal that your province has, the larger and more advanced your cursades units will be. (more knoghts and order foots as well as many more fanatics)
