Hello all, this is my first post and I would just like to say hello to everyone...

But as the topic says: What's the real deal with the University and the College of Surgeons?

I've read type about how the University might improve the acumen of generals produced in that provence and that the College might have something to do with reduction in diseases.

Is there any proof of the effects of these buildings? Do any of you build them?

Welcome to our humble abode MrJedi.

Keep walking down the hall, I'm sure someone there can answer you question. Unfortunately, I a have not progressed far enough in my campaign to even build a one room school house. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif You don't want, nor need my help. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I have built a university and a college of surgeons a couple of times, usually in the capital, but you only get to them late in game (as you have other priorities and it takes so long in sheer years to get there)and when you have so much gold you might as well. Because they come so late its difficult to assess whether they make an impact or not. I have built a military academy as the Turkish in order to get the Janissary units, but I would be very interested to know if the other buildings are worthwhile or not.

I got the College of Surgeons built in Wessex just before 1400 - and never got another plague or english sweats-type message again (with the added 'reduction in income&#39http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif.

I didn't get the Mil Academy done until nearly the end-of-game, so I noticed no difference.

Did you get them often before? They don't happen to me very often in the first place

Yeah, they come later in the game but I'm a builder, so... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Yea, verily, my friend. In that (English) campaign, it seems the late 1300's teemed with bugs that hit some province every other year. I had trade & ports all over the map, so I suspect I was importing them from overseas. 'Surgeons' put a stop to it tho'.

I too havent made it long enough to build these. Though i will keep an eye open to see what they do. My current game is rolling along nicely, though I may have to whack the pope. To many crusades being launched my way. He really hates those dozen or so Orthodox bishops in the Papal States i guess.

I have a 46 pages PDF document, I do not remember from where, that has all the units and buildings of the game and their stats. According to it:
College of Surgeons – 40 happiness bonus
Military Academy – no special bonus
Reliquary – 30 happiness bonus
University – no special bonus
However, there are no sections concerning other bonuses than happiness, and this is for ver1.0.

Cool, 30 happiness from the Reliquary or however. Im in the process of building one of those in my capital. Havent had much trouble with rebellions yet, though they may be coming soon. Fighting the French, English, and keep having the Egyptians and Turks reappearing. Im Byzantine btw.

I have built a University, College of Surgeons, and a Military Academy in Denmark during my Danish campaign. I haven't had any epidemics in my provinces nor have any of my kings died early from disease. My heirs and most generals seem to have higher acumen and command skills too, not all of them of course, but the frequency of freshly minted 3 star command, 4-6 star acumen generals appears to have gone up.

some buildings are Glorious Achievements goals in the campaign; the University for Poland and a Cathedral for the French, for example.
as for bonuses in the game, I agree that many times they come too late in the game to make any noticeable difference. I suppose if a human player has the money and inclination available to build these things, it's because you're winning, and probably on that long, easy ride to world domination anyway.

Welcome Aboard Jedi http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I have only played ONE campaign so far To near completion that is. You see I am definetly an architect type person ((as my name suggests, Sinan was an Ottoman architect). I like to build my economy and have trade booming. Love to see the provinces rich. I take a looong time to attack anyone and only attack to preserve my own empire. Thus it takes me ages to complete a campaign. Coupled with the fact that I play loads of MP as well, I hope I will eventually finish this great campaign. I have started many campaigns just to try out some strategies, but at the mo.

There is just one that I return to and this one is Egypt the year is around 1299. Trade is booming, the world is largely at peace bcoz noone wnats to attack me since I have so many men. It's expert level so the AI is decently smart. I have been building away and so far I have not hit the military academy. I did build a Grand Mosque (in CAstille no less) though, and the effect was noticable. I only build Nizaris (Egypt special unit) in the province with the GM (Grand Mosque), trouble is that where earlier on I was having a tuff time finding 3 acumen generals, now all my Nizari generals produced in the GM province are coming out with 4 - 5 acumen regularly http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif . I have not yet seen any generals coming out of that province with less than 4 acumen. That is a noticeable difference in the game since previously like I mentioned I seemed to be stuck with a ton of dead heads http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

So the Grand Mosque seems to have improved the generals' acumen ??? Seems to act like a University indeed.

Pass me an email if you want the save game and you can check it out for yeself if you want to.

Seljuk it's interesting that you noticed a difference with the Grand Mosque, as I noticed an improvement in the quality of the generals as the Turkish as well after building a Grand Mosque in Rum. However as the English at the moment a Cathedral in Wessex has made no difference, I wonder if the effects are random?

I like the way you play SeljukSinan. You are truly building an empire for the ages. Too many players rip through the game conquering the world and only building enough to crank out tons of soldiers. Think what our world would be like today if such was the strategy of the leaders back then...no great cathedrals or mosques, no universities, etc. Keep on building up that empire http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

hey thanks Gregoshi http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Well I'm in 1306 now. Finally approaching the late era. Only one faction respawn sp far. The English have respawed in Scotland, that is great coz this means some training for my new Prince who has come of age as a 7 star general. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Hmm I was also thinking maybe I will let them take Scotalnd and make peace, but I doubt if they will accept peace so i must wipe them out once again, alas. The construction is well underway should have Military Academy soon as well.

Since the last time I posted though Castille (province with GM) has produce 2 sub-standard acumen generals. One of them is acumen 0 and the other is acumen 1 LOL So I think maybe the effects of the Grand Mosque are random, maybe I have just been lucky since I buitl the GM and all my generals produced there have medium to good acumen. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

HouseCarl I do indeed think that the effects are random and not constant. Let's see what happens once the military academy is complete. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

They seem to have a modest effect on a per general leval , but overall the effect seems fairly significant .
I have encountered these as Byzantium in Paladins' 1092 mod and though I have not payed much attention to the effects of the College of Surgeons , the University seems to boost average acumen , the Military academy seems to boost average command ability and this seems to include admirals as well as generals .
Thats been my experience on the subject .

SeljukSinan.........does the game not end because you reached time limit?........I play similar but have had last two games end just as I reached my peak.

Greetings

Sherri: I have only started plaing in Early period and now it's 1316 Ad. Considering that the game ends in 1453, I still have plenty of time reach the top of the building tree. In this campaign, Egypt has Citadel level structures in about 65% of the provinces under control, Fortress level in 8-10%, maybe castle level in most of the remaining, and keep level in 2 or 3. I'm sure that there is enough time left to complete all the major buildings. If yo start in Late period though I think it's gonna be a lot tuffer.

BTW i stared a test campaign as Byzantines on Easy, and boy was it EASY LOL all my generals were aboev 5 acumen. I then tried one as English on Easy, adn again I found that there were a lot more business minded generals out there. On Expert the game makes it more difficult (maybe unrealistically so) by reducing the avilability of high acumen, command, piety generals. On Expert you really have to try and cultivate the generals.

EDIT: In this campaign i always make sure that my cashflow is sufficient for continous bulding. Once a good cashflow is achieved I just pop up the build q, and line up the structures i want to build. The key is to have enuf income so that this can be achieved in addition to troop training and maintenance costs http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I don't know about its specific benefits, but the military academy is required for some high level units too; specifically Janissary units for the Turks.

Shahed

Indeed the MA (Military Academy) is required for the Jani units, which I guess represents the Acemi Oglan, (military college the Ottomans built).
