I hope there are some STW diehards out there that might remember how to sort out my problem - every time I try to storm a castle in STW v1.12, the game crashes to the desktop. I can choose the weather OK, but as soon as the camera starts to pan towards the Castle, boom the game is gone.
I feel like I'm missing out on an important part of the game, never having the chance to storm a castle dammit. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif
I'm running XP on a 2Gz P4 with 512MB of ram and heaps of VM and HD space...
I've searched the net, and the only place I found someone with same problem was a post on the Apothecary, but with no replies, and I'm not even allowed to post there.
I have a feeling that this is a known issue though - ideas anyone?

I should add that I have a Radeon 8500 AIW video card with the very latest Catalyst drivers.
I'm a latecomer to STW, but already hooked - might move on to MTW when I've played this one thru.
I wonder if my problem occurs with MI or WE?

Konichiwa, wombatsan, welcome to theOrg http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

We'll copy this post to The Sword Dojo forum, to give the samurai there a chance to crack your problem.

Further to my post;
I've uninstalled and re-installed STW, tried versions 1.0, 1.11 and 1.12.
I've tried software mode and hardware mode video, resolutions of 800*600 and 1024*768, AGP multipliers of 4X and 2X, Catalyst drivers 2.3, 2.4 and 2.5, DirectX 8.1 and 9(rc2).
Still crashing. Did actually get it to work once in software mode and once in hardware mode, but that is twice in about 40 attempts - having another go with the same settings from the same savegame just crashed again... and again... and again...

Wow, wombatsan, what a frustrating time you're having. So now it's not just castle sieges, but the entire game crashes-to-desktop all the time? Or just on that particular save-game?

I remember seeing some discussion of RAEDON cards having trouble...I'll see if I can dig up more info.

No, its just the Castle Siege still. Had some graphical corruption on the menu backgrounds, but no big deal. Apart from disappearing armies in the tutorial (which seem to reappear if I alt-tab away and back), everything else is fine...
Generally the crash to the desktop is just as the camera pans to the Castle, but sometimes its as soon as it enters battle mode.

Missed part of your question Kukrikahn - the crash only happens for castle sieges, but I should add that I have only tried to personally lead 2 different sieges. If there are a large number of defenders I tend to starve them out, but when there are a handful of troops with a few seasons provisions I want to get in there personally. The first time I gave up trying after several crashes and resolved it automatically, putting it down to a corrupt map or savegame, but when it happened again I knew something was up...
Recently I have tried other sugestions from old threads - I have turned off DMA for my CD drives and turned off the sound - no change. I even re-installed my old GeForce2 Ti card - same problem The only suggestions I havn't tried is changing the AGP aperture size, as my BIOS doesnt offer this option, or changing the PCI texture size for the GeForce, as my driver panel doesnt offer this either.
Would still appreciate any other suggestions - anybody? anybody at all?

Btw, my PC is a Sony, model RX203. Hence the lack of options in the bios or for the video card - they do this deliberatly to avoid customer support hassles from people who like to fiddle and screw things up...
I'm reluctant to install a generic driver for my OEM GeForce card on the offchance that it will let me modify a setting that may or may not make any difference, but I'm so frustrated I probably will - if I could find a BIOS update that would let me modify the AGP aperture I would try that too - anybody heard of one?

wombatsan, have you tried contacting Sony or checking their support site? Another possibility is to go to www.zdnet.com (http://www.zdnet.com) and look in their downloads section.

BTW, you are now able to post into all the forums. Perhaps a post such as your last two in the Apothecary will get some advice for your dilemma.
