View Full Version : All Cav Army
Annie is collecting ideas to write her next doctrine paper. If you have ideas, please reply, Annie will collect them and proper credits will be rendered.
(Past and only doctrine paper is available atAnnie's web page (http://anniep.netfirms.com) under Alexandria_Library/doctrines: cannons defending hills)
SITUATION:
You go to MP game and you see the opponent brings an all cav army. What would you do?
1. Cry foul and refuse to play (ESC-out of the game)
2. Lodge a complaint to CA, to the community so that a patch would render cavalry units docile to the point it will be easily confused with a pack of lap dogs;
3. Fight it to prove that all cav army is not a solution.
Now, when you select an army, would you:
1. Always bring all cav army because it will give you an edge in any kind of game, sort of like monk rush in STW, or Ashi rush, or all-gun defense in STW;
2. Bring 8 or 10 spears just to make sure if the opponent brought an all cav army, you would have to tool to make the practice obsolete;
3. Bring occasionally an all cav army (or a lot of cav) once in a while to surprise the heck out of the opponent;
4. In a 3v3 or 4v4, bring an all cav army to compliment your allies' army (prearrange with them, of course);
Or another other idea/combination...
Annie already has some idea ot form her own doctrine, but would like to hear from the community.

My personal favorite: a 3 or 4 player coordinated army; although I admit I usually ask one of the others to 'do' horsies, as my MP fighting style tends toward the slow and plodding - making me a better infantryman/routing enemy catcher. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Part 1:#3 is closest to my answer. Fight, run then die like a coward is usually the result. However, for me, this is not exclusive to fighting an all cav army. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif
Part 2: I rarely know what I'm going to pick for an army ahead of time. I pick a little of this and a little of that - whatever strikes my fancy at the moment. This leds to some odd results sometimes, like my all SA army in STW. It failed horribly and the army routed. The only positive about that all archer army was I could tell my opponent that they aren't routing, they're just skirmishing back to camp. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif Here we go again Kukri.
Part 1: always fight http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif not because I want to prove anything but because it is the fun part of it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Part 2: number 3 or 4, of course it depends on allies. I tend to bring lots of cavs only if I know that I have good allies.
Annie got to play an AllCav yesterday night. It was not bad, except that my allies also brought AllCav, making it too many cav on our side. Went away the coordination with the allies first.
I'll try it again. All Cav is fun in a 4x4. I think it would still be a good strategy if you pair up with some strong infantry ally.

1:Always fight ofc http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
2:I have had lots of fun bringing an all cav army with 4-8 horsearchers in 3v3. As long as my allies brings a more standard army it works fine.

al cav for surprise, or confer with allies.

I agree with CBR, always fight, there's no other option... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I don't usually bring cav armies and when I do, it tends to fail miserably... about half cav is the max that I can handle without everything falling into chaos, heh...
Part 1: Option #3 Fight.
Part 2: Option #2 Bring 8 anti-cav infantry be them spears, pikes or polearms and keep your flanks protected. You don't need 10. Play at high enough florins so that your infantry has sufficient morale to stand and fight. Stop the all cav player 2 or 3 times and watch him stop bringing all cav.
In 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4, teams facing an all cav army are advised to close ranks or else be subject to a devastating doubleteam. Allies should always bring some cav so as to be able to provide timely assistance to a team member who is being doubleteamed or to effect a partial doubleteam themselves. Full scale 2 on 1 doubleteaming is unnecessary most of the time.
Well, I don't play MP really, but I prefer footmen. A well formed foot army is hard to beat, strong defenders backed by good archers is my standard stretegy.
I generally play as one of the Orthodox factions (That'd be Byzantium and Russia) and I find that they have infantry that is more than capable of routing those fancy heavy cavalry units. Both Halberdiers and Varangian Guard tend to win one to one fights against Cav units, even without backup, so when I field them with a good archer cover, I don't worry about too much.
The Russians are particularly easy, you really don't need anything other than Halberds and Boyars in any army unless it's post gunpowder in which case a culverin crew or four is generally recommended. In the case of the Byzantines you generally have to work a unit of Kataphraktoi in (Because your best generals are generally Kataphraktoi) and choose between Trebizond Archers (What I generally use for defensive armies) and Byzantine Cavalry (What I generally use for offensive armies).
But generally speaking, especially if I'm defending, I'll take an all infantry army any day.

I'm just curious, if we send out all cavs how do we effectively assign the keyboard hotkeys/group to manage the troops?
The most basic way I mean I usually give ctr-1 for archers, 2 for infantry and 3 for cavs flanks, etc. then also archer front center (attack), infantry front center (defend) interchangebly, cavs as flanks.
in STW I use heavy/naginata cavs a lot, all charging - center and wings - so it's easy to control; just ctrl-1,2,3 or just simply one line or sometimes V line confuses the default AI (and me as well sometimes against a good opp lol) .... but MTW is a bit complicated since spearmen alike can really inflict damage. ( of course expensive lancers and gothic knights are special cases )

The usually give you the edge, but i had some bitter losses, so I'm not completely convinced that 100% cav is all that effective; however they're fun. I also try to mix up my cav units a bit.
