1. Well no not really.
2. Yes there are a few ways to play the game, but the main game is based on the battlefield.
3. No such thing as towns. you control provinces and build facilities in them. Each province does have a main castle, which i guess you could treat as a 'town'. You can control as many provinces as you can capture and keep.

There are two ways to win, complete conquest of the world 9or a minor victory of 60%) or by completing Gloriouse Achievements that win you points.

There isn't realy a tech tree like Civ 3, but there is a 'level' tree, as you build more buildings.

You can play the game like you play Civ3, and it is quite enjoyable on that level. In fact, I had to do this for the first week or two while I sorted out my framerate issues on the battlefield.

As somebody else said, you can win by total conquest or by meeting specific goals - send a crusade to so-and-so, establish X number of gold trade per year, conquer this place and that, etc. I find that the goal oriented game is much more rewarding and more Civ3 like.

I have to disagree with the previous posting about multiplayer, however. So far, I have been very disappointed with the multiplayer (MP) games I have found online. Not because of the game itself, but because of the people and actual gameplay. Nobody has been rude to me or anything like that. In fact, the people in the games have been very cool http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif (the people in the chat, on the other hand, leave something to be desired... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif ). It is just that the games tend to be all the same. Unlimited gold. Ridiculous amounts of troops. Byzantines everywhere. All of which adds up to the same tactics and scenarios. If you add in the clan team vs non-clan team games, it gets even worse because they tend to be so one-sided.

Of course none of this will stop me from playing online http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif but it has detracted from the online experience. Especially when compared with the other online communities and servers.

When you are non-clan and play against a clan on MP, I suggest you record your battle. It's true they win more often and usually very decisive, it's because of a good reason: they have team work and the follow sound team tactics. Study the way they deploy, the way they advance, the way they support each other and the way they quickly zero down to a prey...

Many are working on ways to counter Barneys (purple guys) threat. But if you feel it give you an advantage, by no means use Byz. army. I think I only encourage more experienced people to venture out and try out other army types.

There will be tournements and there could be rules about chosing army types, so try out other armies would prepare you for a good competition later.

The game is geared toward single play, so many would probably feel enjoyable without going on line. However, once go online, its hard to go back and face the wimpy AI http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I do agree with you fully that we have been asking for better support of online game, given the possibilities this game engine has.

Sieges

No one mentioned sieges http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif You can throw your men and horsies against the unyielding opposition of your enemies walls. Die gloriously as you meet the withering arrow and artillery fire from your oppositions emplacements Bust or Blast down the enemies gates and charge through to slaughter the garrison

Only thing missing is the option to make and leave a mound of skulls to mark the carnage http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

It starts in 1087 {for me , it's 1092 because I play using Paladins' 1092 mod} and spans the three recognised periods of the middle ages {early , high 1205-1320 and late 1321-1453} which means you start just before the first crusade and finish at the historical fall of Byzantium {or earlier if you conquer the map before then} .
As for the leaders , they are given mames and various Vices and Virtues , but you will likely stray from the bloodlies of history a bit as you shape the fortunes of your faction {and get the odd prince killed etc http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif}
Start with England on easy to get the hang of it ... and when you get Scotland , build a watch Tower which helps loyalty {their an unrully mob up their you know http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif} then build a Fort stat and when you got that , churn out those Highland Clansment because they are like that Warner Brothers cartoon Tasmanian Devil : they can chop anything to peices http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

We as a clan tend to host games of between 12 and 15 thousand florins since the patch. There are some guys who host 99999 games and they can be quite fun now and again. It makes it harder to rout everyone due to the high valour floating around.

If you are one of four ronins fighting against a clan the best advice is to talk to your allies before you deploy. Try and deploy so that no one is left isolated and become easy target for a double team. And communication during battle would be useful too so if someone was in trouble just holler and wait for your team mates to bail you out.
