I understand that I must learn to use the hotkeys and that I need to learn how to manuever my companies on the battle field. But I don't know any detail as to how to use these things. Who can help me because I intend to play online soon and I would hate to be a worthless adversary. Thank you all.

Lol, I'm glad you are interested. I am starting to put together a guide for new multi players, it is still at the idea stage though so it might take a while to formalize.

I will skip all of the obvious stuff...I am assuming you can get online and join a game without too much trouble. Once you get in the game your allies will expect you to help them (either attack or defend). To help your allies you will need to know how to move your army as a group (not one by one) and you will need to have useful units. You will need to know how to TURN your army as a group as well.

Standard online army is:
4 pavise arbalesters
4 v3 or v4 spears
4 alan cavalry (or any fast cav)
4 swordsmen

To deploy this army:
Take 4 pavise arbalesters (hold CTRL and double-left click an arbalester unit). Stretch them out in a line of 3 men deep. Do the same thing with 4 spears, only put them just behind the arbalesters in a line 5 men deep. Do the same thing with 4 swordsmen (byz infantry, footknights, etc.), only put them behind the spears. Now place 2 cavalry on each flank. You are ready to go. This is fast and easy.

To move your army as a group, you shoudl select all the units. Hit CTRL-A. Ok now hold the ALT key and left click where you want the center of your army to end up. They will march to the clicked spot AND RETAIN THEIR FACING. This is important. Practice it.

Ok, now they have arrived at the location as an army. Now hit G to group them all together. Now hold ALT key and right click to the direction you want your army to face. They should all spin AS AN ARMY and should be facing the direction your Alt-righclicked.

Now try Alt-Rightclick, followed quickly by an ALT left click. The army should begin to turn, but then start moving toward your left click. When they get to the leftclick location they should be facing the rightclick direction. They have "formed on the fly."

These are the basics of army movement.

Thats all I have time for. This should get you started. Figure out who are the experienced players and listen to them.

Good luck see you online.

Goldfish from silver gazwa has a very good site detailing on how to manuver ur units as a group (it comes with pictures too http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif) , check it out.

Address is: http://shogun-academy.tripod.com/'

Also practice with custom battles in SP to learn how to effectively make upgrades to your units. My first newbie game I went with all valor 0 units and I thought swiss pikemen is the the super unit :lol.

Hey Mary,

The most important thing to learn is not to be put off by losing.

When you lose a battle, use the Save Replay feature to replay it at your leisure. You can then look at things from different angles and be able to assess why you lost that partictular battle.

Another thing is watch for oddness. When someone seems to have their army arrayed in a somewhat odd looking formation, yet still manages to whup your backside, it may be worth looking into how or why this worked for them - take for example the newly fashionable trend of arraying either your feudal men at arms or order footsoldiers (it's one or the other), in a long wide line with no depth of rank. This seems to work very well for some players.

Try different combos. Go online to try stuff out sometimes.

There are alot of variables. Even the novice player can confound the experts at times (and I'm no expert).

That should get you to the academy.

Although the units are different, all the principles are the same.

As far as I am concerned online play is all about fun http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

IT is not important if you win or lose, but just have fun

With practice, you will improve.

Jst come online and play: all you have to bring with you is the patch 1.1 and patience. Instead of wanting to learn all there is at once jst play some games and if something 'strange' happens ask others why things go that way.

i think at first if your only a SPer the most important step is getting used to handling 16 units in the same battle, if you want to practice a little before you come online try some custom battle with 16 units against the same cpu army http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Learn to use terrain to your advantage. Hills, however slight, confer bonuses/penalties on men. Also, find a base unit (i.e. your preferred spear), pump up the valor and make it the backbone of your army.

Hi Mary.

Just go online and play 100 games.. and keep using the groups/movement.. maybe clumsy at first but after 20 games you should see improvement.. after 50 games you should be familiar with the controls.. and after 100 games you should be somewhat familiar with which tactics work and which dont.

BTW the link Bosdur gave has one extra qoute ' at the end. The link can be found in my signature.

Welcome and cya online http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Mary the important thing to learn is how to bow your head..

Just incase you meet Monsta on your way to the rice fields..

Oh and never mention a 'Circle'...it makes people sweat.
