I must say I'm no superb general.

But Camels must be used in Arid or Dersert environments. In deserts they get +1 to both attack and defence. Against horses they get +2 attack and +4 defence making them rather potent in cavalry fights. They main disadvantage is their Morale (0), but their cheapness makes up for this. Valour 2 Camels will most likely take out a good chunk of enemy cavalry if you can force the fight. A lesser disadvantage, but one that can be equally bad, is their lack of armour. They only have 2 Armours... the least any mounted unit can have, so don't let them get shot at.
And like any cavalry, but more important due to the weak normal stats, keep them out of woods where you know infantry is hiding.

YEah, camels are very cheap and effective. You can happily flank an army, without even having to fear their cavalry. And i found the whole idea of camels quite amusing. I build them just because they look really funny.

They are more than fun... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif They are powerful in the right hands and supported. But I agree they are great fun if you can make them work. And lastly remember they are slightly faster than Gothic Knights and Kataphraktoi (which I feel is a bit odd).

The bane of Camels are Horse Archers of any type, but the most Turcomans and Turcopoles. Can't catch them and can't sustain the losses.
Powerful archers such as Jannisary Infantry and to a lesser degree the skirmishers such as Nizari, Futuwwa and Bulgarian Brigands will give the Camel a bad experience.

well camels were first used by Cyrus, king of Persia, against the Lydians under king Croesus. The Lydians had the finest cavalry in the world and the Persians had mostly infantry. The Persians did, however use camels for packhorses, and Cyrus told his men to unload the camels and mount them, to counter the Lydian cavalry. When the Lydian horses charged at the Persian camels, the horses turned back from the smell and threw off their riders. Thus rendering ineffective the Lydian cavalry.

I was surprised when i first tried the camels and flanked enemy heavy knights in a desert regionwhat syrprised me more is that the peasants on the camels fought better than when on ground

Annie's take: Annie would only bring 1 Camel and even that, only if it is the Berber type who can shoot arrows. The army has only 16 slots, wasting one for peasants on camel back is already generous... (yes, they are peasants indicated by their weak morale).

i meant the bedioun camel warrior,if you dismounted them you'll see that they are actually peasants, add the stinky smell and lack of hygeine and you got a wonderful duogood when they are with 3 and above star generals.

Having ridden both camels and many kinds of horses....I have to say that as long as you have good relationship with your camel....they are superior to horses in many ways...You have the height advantage, stamina, speed (in arid areas anyway) etc...plus they smell and spit and are just plain ornery
Hehehe...
Teutonic Knight....Sorry m8 but I have to laugh atcha....first used by----LOL.....can you believe you said that? perhaps Cyrus is the first general that YOU have heard of using them.... NOt trying to start a fight m8...just laughing.....I imagine that they have been being used for thousands and thousands of years...far prior to any history that we know of..that's all.
anyway,,,,, in mp..yepper...flank flank and more flank....Charge and have fun
YEEEEEEEhaaaa

I have seen records of old Egyptian soldiers mounted on camels. Apparently very big ones as two men were mounted, one on the frontslope and the other behind armed with a bow. Seems rather costineffective to mount two men like that, but that was what I saw.

If I'm using camel it would be for defensive purposes to tackle enemy's flanking cavalry.

I love using Camels http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif They're more succeptible to arrows though than Horses are, so you must take care with them. Plus, due to their bad morale (not it makes sense that peasants are their foot-units) once they get routed a first time, they seem to have a significant loss in effectiveness, even if they do actually rally. But if you hid mid-flank on a horse unit, they're very effective.
