View Full Version : A simple question

Hi all, This is my first time here for some weeks. I don't own Medieval but as many will know I have been around the STW scene for a while.

This question is simple.

There are a few little tweaks that can be made to a game to make it better, but why, If after basically what, 4 years? there is still a large element of "this must be changed, that must be changed, ****** is a cheat" etc etc. people dont just stop playing the game and find one that they like for what it is? Rather than whingeing for years about how wrong everything is.

I think there is an element of people that just love playing and if it wasnt for the "evergreen whingers" there would be a lot more of those people. It is certainly one of the reasons why I havent rushed out and spent £30 on a game where you get whingers all day.

Personally I'm happier playing cribbage on MSN these days. There you can just play, without people accusing, whingeing, whining, bickering, slagging the game or another player off.

Thanks for listening and long live the org.

Hi Krae,

fifteen two, fifteen four and a pair for six, not forgetting one for his nobs

Um my name is neverbefore, I think. Mainly because I there were so many names taken I used one that had "neverbefore" been used.

If I am there it is between 4-6pm gmt. Hope to see you there.

Hi Boromir,

I would say the reason people continue playing the game despite the problems is that there isn't anything else like it and it's challenging, and the high points you can experience are really up there. Remember winning Elmark's 2v2 tourney as an impromptu paired team? Of course, the low points can be pretty frustrating as well.

Boromir,

Good question. I think there are several reasons:
1) The same people aren't doing the whining;
2) Some issues which should have been resolved 4 years ago are still present;
3) This game is worth making better, and if it can be made better by community input (although not whining) then we should contribute if we can;
4) MTW introduced a whole new spin on the TW system, with so many new units, and new units like camels which are great anti-cav but weak against other stuff, that a whole new round of balance issues have arisen.

It's too bad that people are put off by constructive criticism of the game. It's an incredible game and although it has some issues I think its worth the 30 quid.

Primarily I think the problem is that the developers aren't very interested in the multiplayer aspect of this game. They concentrate on SP, but most of the long time community members are primarily interested in MP. So, we cry and cry for changes and if we cry loud enough they make a few.

WE GET REWARDED FOR WHINING So why should we stop?
We whined about the fact only one person could play a faction. Now we can all play whatever faction we want. We whined about cavalry being to expensive--they made cav cheaper (and made spears too expensive--but who's whining?).

If CA sees our whining and responds to it, it is at least some semblance of customer service. Ideally we wouldn't have to whine, but if we just make a few comments here and there they dont listen or respond because--in their words-- we are the miniscule minority of multiplayer customers (far less than 10% of sales, they say).

So we are stuck with whining as the only way to get changes in the code made. I wish we could just consult with them and offer advice that would be listened to.

Unfortunately the king doesn't listen until the peasants are at his door with torches and pitchforks.

i am happy u found your game boro, i dont know scribbage but it seems good. i never got the idea u liked stw very much anyway.
we are happy with total war, just unhappy that teh games potential is unused and the mp part neglected.

history have shown that whining is the most effective. as stated above we get all factions vs all factions due to whining. i am sure if noone whined but just a few posted alleluja posts than we would never see any improvment.
furthermore like all software a new release is 2 steps forward and one step back. its sad to see that the game has still soem shortcommings it had before.

Hello boro, how u doing?
For me ive always been interested in stratagy games, first one I got was Tactics II from Avalon Hill in 1967? But this is just the kinda game I like....As for the whining...squeeky wheel gets the greese Whining is the main tool for the devs to judge the sucess of the game, which way to go with the next, what to fix and what to leave alone; Actually is obvious that they have paid attention in the past and tried to fix or balance stuff.....
Balance though is an elusive animal... and may never be caught...The bugs in the multi; well the level of annoyance is about the same as STW.... fewer in game drops, but I get crash on host too often......
In all im happy with the game.....lots of good improvements over Shogun that work (thus require no whining) Well if you get tired of playing cards it would be nice to see you drop into a game

I think of it kind of like a relationship with your parents. Yeah, they annoy the hell out of you when they're 'telling you what to do', but why do they do it? Because they care what actually happens to you. Thats why a lot of people complain here, because they love the game and want it to reach its full potential. The people who complain the most are the ones that you see online pretty much every day (yeah theres a lot of people online everyday that don't complain) and they want to continue to play everyday. So when there's things wrong with their pasttime, they can't help but speak up. And the level of 'whining' that you see just goes to show you how many people really like the game. IMO anyways.

Thats a good point Nabu, I wouldn't complain if I didn't love this game.

There is still a small group playing STW/MI online. One of the times they meet is Sundays at 19:00 GMT. Krasturak has recently returned to play online as well.
