View Full Version : Stopping the Byz Inf Army

I almost always play as Germany. Lately, I've been using the following army against the byz with mixed to poor results:

1 v4 AMC (gen)
3 v1 Tuet Knights
2 v1 Teut Sargeants
2 v1 Pavise Arb
8 v3 FMAA

I think that this is a 20K(Flr) army (though I dont remember the exact numbers).

I find that I win about 40% against the byz with this army. One of the porblems is the lack of unit size (40's and 60's vs byz inf 100s). The upside is that it's easy to quick flank byz inf units with my cav and force some routing (byz have very low morale). As I said, this fails more often than not. Any suggestions?

I would take less FMAA. You are incurring a tax on the last 4 FMAA which could be put to another use.

Try 4 v4 FMAA, increase your F.Sgts. to v3, take 2 v3 Alan Cav and take at least 2 more PaviseArbs.

use your sgts. to hold the center of your line while you flank on both sides with 2 FMAA and your alans. Use your Teut.Knights in a defensive role to plug gaps or stop byz flankers before they rout your main line. Protect your pavise with your alan cav and/or attack/flank with them.

You might also consider using v0 Teut.Knights with a couple of weapon upgrades instead of spending money on valor (which they dont necissarily need) [esp. if they engage late in the battle to plug gaps].

I've been able to crush the Byz with this setup (only I take one less Teut Knight and one more (4) pavise arbs as a matter of personl preference).

I was unaware of the "tax" incurred when taking too many units of the same type? How does it work? Is there a resource for finding the tax's steppes?

Your 8 FMAA is costly, due to the "luxury" tax.

The CMAA could be substituted by the richer cousin CMAA. It's actually cheaper to have CMAA for same stat.

4 v2 CMAA
4 v3 FMAA or 4 v2+1w FMAA

I am not sure the suggestion is better than your current army.

ps.: Barney Bunches come with many shape and size, so it's not always easy to counter them with a single solution.

MASTER BACHUS surely has very fast Alan Horses http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I do rely a great deal on my Alans....I wish there were other fast, reliable cavalry out there, but there really isn't.

The over 4 of a type tax is 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, etc for the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, etc of the original base cost.

try sticking to a 4 max rule

i know the way to kill the purple windmill without ranged (except catapults) or calv. i developed the idea myself

4 val 3 feud foot knights
4 val 3 chiv men at arms
4 val 4 militia seargents
3 val 3 catapults
1 val 1-4 merc gen
now i know i said no calv but my gen is always calv.

ok the knights and maa in one big line rush the inf and hold them up send the militia round the flanks and hit there rears or hit any ranged or calv they have. make sure ur catapults fire on the byz inf. then when they rout stop ur men and rest them hunt down the routers with ur alan merc general.
this works on all armys in the game and i havea great deal of success with it in mp.
remember dont bother trying to hit their general all byz inf r diciplined it doesnt affect them if their gen dies. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif
