i have had quite a few so called epic battles, some stand off and manouvering that goes on for ages

the best conditions for epic is 3v3 on hillyinland, in temp

Krast still isn't good enough to be an epic yet, but he's getting there ...

I agree with Mag...flatinlands19 is a great map...both as defender and attacker a real challenge. Took me some effort to figure it out (Mag showed me the way by beating me up real bad a few times http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif )

Epic battles...yes...lots of them...some longlasting 2v2 and 3v3 games (I prefer teamplay) on several maps. I'm not a great player...so I'm easy to please http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

If you call "epic" a game that is either memorable (somebody pull a good tactic/strategy, or some unusual army selection), or fun, then I have many. Of course, my standard could be low: I tend to have fun in any 4x4 game.

I even had an epic battle, defined as "long and boring", the other extreme than what you think of the word epic. That was on a bridge map, huge setting, with a timer, the frame rate was about 1 frame per 3 seconds. It was still fun because we were messaging a lot in the game, talking about anything but the game itself http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Have you lost the fun already? It's an advantage to be not too good to get bored, and not too green to be able to pull a few surprises.

You should add the choice 'I dont get any cause I dont have time to put up with the frustration of online MP in MTW'

I guess I will always have the memories of the STW ones

It is fun that up until this week I had had plenty good battles but hardly any epic ones... then this week alone I got an epic battle per battle... So I went for the 1 per day.

For instance the last battle I played was a very lengthy 3v3 Late battle, where I squared off with MizuYuuki. I had pulled an archerheavy Turk army (4 Turcoman Foot, 4 Jannisary Inf, 4 JHI, 4 Kwz Cav). To tell a long story shortly, my Turcomans soaked up his Arbs fire very well and gave better than they got, then my JI killed lots of quality troops and finally a deadly melee ensued where we both flanked and used correct troops against the right adversaries. In the end I lost and my side lost.

But I had taken a radically different army, and proven that certain archers can indeed defeat Pavise Arbalesters. My army gave a good account of itself and was not walked over by the stronger enemy force.

Btw, I saved the battle because I got so proud of my Turcomans.

Yesterday I fought a 2v2 against two Tenkis. I was my regular army of 4Jhi, 3Fww, 4Ji, 2Khz, 3Amc, and I routed my Byzantine enemy. At the end, my forces were reduced to a fraction of their former might, and were routed by his ally without difficulty.

i think one of the reasons we have less epic battles is the rout factor.. the whole chain rout thing can kill a battle that looks to be epic in moments

Seeing own army runs like cowards: 99,999 florins.
Seeing opponent's armies route by a timely flanking charge: priceless

an epic 2v2, where my ally and i were outmatched, both by the quality of our opponents, and in army selection,

given we all knew the map we expected a different setup from our opposition that what we faced, here i stood as defender on a heavily forested hill almost behind the enemy lines where i expected a hard fought tussle for the hill from the beginning,

My immediate opponent proceeded to march in coloumn along my concealed front lines (i had 5 cavalry exposed to view further towards the center of the map), while his ally attmepted to manouver into a flanking position against my ally,

we let them proceed with their plan until my opponent (still in colmun side on to my front) was level with 80% of my front lines, then i charged - what a surprise, however skill took it's toll and despite support from my ally, and finishing off my immediate opponent, the remaining attacker's fresh troops scattered our remnants, a few, very few rallied and we hurridly tried to regroup what we had
- actually winding up defending a small rise on the attackers end of the field,

we had our general's units (both ChivKnights), severly depleted

ive had a few epic battles including some i have won although they arent too often. They have usually been very long too:S, i think that 4v4 usually produce the most epic battles. I havnt really had 1 this month but ive been in many good 1nes. Sometimes the quick battles can be really good too. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

Sadly games are becoming less 'epic' lately, in fact some have been eventless http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

well chainrouts can be a part of an epic battle but at least let there

- be an exciting prologue of shooting skirmishes, when units engage
- be a moment where u can observe the fighting where the tension builds up and when your army breaks
- be utterly clear where why how your armies break.

sadly on mtw

- besides lining up arbas skirmisches occur but are limited in general
- well when units engage its hard work, one micromanaging problem and ur lost, there is just no time
- somethimes the whole goddamn thing when everything seems fine but perhaps u missed 1 morale point somewhere cuz the armiescolours mess up

so for me battles are clearly less epicale, maybe 1 per week but alas wolves go where the flock goes....

well the battle i fought in had all that.. and i was surprised to see that although there was the usualy arb walls, my Jan Inf did a lot better than them, and when the enemy did attack it was quite well organised, but it also showed how ragged the troops were after enduring destert heat and heavy archer fire.. ill post a little story on it soon.

as far as manouvers go, we ended up going from the right side of the map to the left, using the terrain as best we could, and trying to counter enemy movements.. it was shher joy to have this battle
