I have played MTW online for about two weeks now, and I have, for the most part, learned ways to win and developed a nice army. But I keep crashing, ruining people's games. If you have ever played online with The_Damned_Thing(me), you would immediately know what I mean. I crash way too often. I crash more often than any other player I have seen online. I would put up with the occasional crash, but this crashing has become so frequent that this game is not becoming fun anymore. Where is the fun in letting down all of your teammates and opponents because you keep crashing The process of strategizing, setting up, and manoeuvring units is too intensive in time and effort for me and my teammates to have to throw away and start over with because I had to crash Every game is important. This is not some shooter game where another server can be found in 30 seconds. Most people do not have very much time to play this, and I am wasting it.

So you have to ask yourself whether you would play with or trust someone who crashes almost every other game. Would you let me on your server? Would you put up with my crashing?

I would encourage you to try and find a solution for this and start playing again. (sounds easy huh?)

i play on a 56k connection, and it workes fine 99% of the time. Lag and crashing is due to system troubles, if your desparate you can reinstall windows or defrag your HD

Windows is the bane of the world.... i guess its what casues 99% of crashes http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Check the tech forums for solution, (make sure you dont go to multi directly from single player, that causes a crash)try some 1v1 games vs 4v4....... then if still a no go, post your specific problems at tech forums, People will help....but dont give up

I would try to find the cause of the crashing. Everyone does crash out of games once in a while, but 50% crashing is quite high. Checkout the tech forum here at the org. If you are crashing to desktop, then video driver or directX could be the trouble. You can reinstall directX easily enough. It's on the 2nd MTW CD. If it's an ISP problem, not much you can do there except change ISP's. Join games that have a ping of 500 or less. You could host a game an have people tell you your ping to get an idea of you connection latency.

You sure provided me a pun when you dropped "the damn thing" - I exclaimed http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I guess many crashes has a cause, like people replied to you. I found myself crashed out of my first 3 post-patch games because I didn't know you must exit and restart game if you switch from single player to multiplayer.

Perhaps you are not alone. One of the Devs (JilJaysmith) was playing 2 games last Friday. And he was crashed to desk top both of the time in middle of games.

Little things not really connected to the game like soundcards, having messaging software running or even browser pointed to a site having pop-up would mess up your internet game (some say it wouldn't but I found it would in my system).

Yes Kongamoto, keep trying. Are you on MSU dial-up? If so thats probably your problem http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif Erado and others can be a great help to you. Make sure you close as many other progs as you can while playing. Take the advice of others in this forum. Don't give up Playing online is easily twice as much fun as playing SP. IMO more than twice as much fun. Good Luck.

Im one of the few that says no

if your finding it frustrating and lets face it who wouldnt

then for your own sake your better off playing SP and at least getting to play the game and have some fun - maybe not as much as online or maybe more its up to you

Diary of a chronic crasher:
3:04 - Logged in to MTW
3:05 - Joined game.
3:45 - Lost game. Exited to desktop.
3:47 - Logged back in.
3:50 - Attempted to join game. Recieved "Could not connect" message.
3:51 - Joined a game.
3:52 - Left game to make room.
3:53 - Joined another game.
4:04 - Game froze when mobilizing army; sounds stuck in short, repeating loop.
4:05 - Furious Ctrl-Alt-Deleting yields no results.
4:06 - Tried power button. Failed.
4:06 - Got up from chair.
4:06 - Yanked power cable from tower.
4:07 - Shoved power cable back in tower.
4:13 - Logged back in.
4:14 - Joined game.
4:42 - Won game w/partner. Host quit. Greeted with splash screen after pressing "OK" at battle's end.
5:57 - Tried logging back in. CTD.
5:58 - Logged in successfully.
5:59 - Joined game.
6:24 - Won game w/team. Returned to room. Slider would not work.
6:26 - Exited to desktop.
10:35 - Looked around at various MTW clansites.
10:37 - Internet Explorer freezes after clicking on link entitled "Ampmortog"
11:14 - Logged back in.
11:15 - Joined game.
11:35 - Won game w/team. During course of game lost ability to click things on battlefield.
11:35 - Repeat crash to splash screen after clicking post-battle "OK".
11:37 - Computer stuck at "Windows ME" screen during auto-reboot.
11:38 - Got up.
11:39 - Yanked cord from computer.
11:39 - Shoved cord back in computer.
11:41 - Logged back in.
11:43 - Joined game.
11:59 - Won game.
12:00 - Exited game.

Well, the problem is not as bad as I would lead you to think. Only one game was "ruined" as I put it earlier. This is probably Windows ME and my ISP(attbi) at work. Am upgrading to XP sometime during holiday break.

I think I spot a couple of problems from your diary.

1. When host quit during battle (this one should make the top of ElmarkoOfFear's "Anger management technique..."), to be on safe side, all participants must relog (relog is to get out of gamespy and log back in). I would even restart the game myself.

2. When game crash during battle, the host should at least relog (some even advice restart the game). If not do so, there is a chance the next game hosted by the same host will crash.

3. This is unrelated to your thread: When switch from SP to MP, the player must restart the program. If not, you will crash the game you join.

After the host quit I considered myself relogged, as the computer automatically rebooted after pressing "OK". The splash screen is the first thing that you see when you boot or restart, such as "COMPAQ".

Also, when the game froze, I had to manually restart the computer as well.

FearofNC also pointed out that a virusscanner might be my problem. As of today I turn Norton Antivirus file system realtime protection off during MTW sessions.

I truely empathise, as I have similar problems on MP. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

My suggestion would be to only play in the smaller games, find out what your PC can handle, and stick with those, or if you're able to host, host small games- there always seem to be more people looking for games than spaces available in them.

Personally i've found that I can just about manage with 3 players, 4 tends to lead to 'jerk-o-vision' once everyone starts moving, and more than that will usually result in my PC freezing once the action starts. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
Worse than that, for some some reason I can't host, even with my firewall off http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif
So there have been a few times where i've just ended up sat in the lobby looking for a small game that i can join, until i get despondant & go back to SP.

Answer to tough question is easy: blame AMP

Then get back into game.
