Im not the first person to include "Gah" as an option, but Imho, The term "Gah" has been an inseparable part of totalwar culture, it's only proper that we include it for every poll http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif.

3v3 or 4v4 is a bad choice as the most dont have a good team

so it isnt realy a teamplay, its more like 4x 1v1.
we dont have the right maps to play some real challanging 3v3 or 4v4.

imo the most guys like it, coz they have the chance to beat 2 of the noobs.

I just can say, i saw 1 game so far where the other team showed some good teamplay, the most other games was crap.

i prefer 1v1 and sometimes 2v2, ofcouse i play 3v3 as well but its realy hard to find some good teams.

Gah 4v4 Gah

Although Kocmoc is right about the weak teams you frequently see, with many times people who just met, the 4v4 games are the best chance to play seriously for other people -- your teammates.

It's also a lot of fun even after you're knocked out, as you can watch the last few units battling it out across the wasteland ... just like Firday night on Tarranak.

4v4 rules, much more fun than same old boring 1v1's. It's true that there may not be much of a competitive aspect since there are very few fixed 3v3/4v4 teams who practice regularly. But then the competitive aspect has already been ruined by the inbalances in the game. The armies which you have to use if you want to have a good chance of winning aren't much fun imho.

Well that is ofc you opinion Kocmoc.. but I have had loads of good 4v4 with lots of nice teamwork on both sides.

Every day we try and gather people to play some potientially epic battles: 2 clans with some ronins if needed or just a group of good players wanting to have fun.

Yes there are also the easy battles where newbies get killed quickly but they have to learn the game somehow and you wont learn teamplay by just playing 1v1.

As I see it most people want to have fun, meet new friends and play some big battles with their mates.

Gah

Krast notices that, according to poll, 'Gah' is more popular than 1v1.

This important fact indicates only one conclusion: people care more about cutting heads off than they do about the number of players.

Cutting of heads off *is* Totalwar

That's right CBR, I myself long for the day where I can do a 10v10, where the defender consists of 9 noobs and 1 super-professional-veteran. I would with the other 9 attacker decimate the noobs and then go 10v1 against the vet, that would be tits http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif.

So if you guys were noobies again, how would you start?
Jump right into a 4v4 and possibly ruin a game or try to find a 1v1 and work up?

I'm thinking of throwing my hat in the ring but don't want to rain on parades. I can beat the AI on Hard/Expert just about all the time but have to admit I use the Pause key on occasion. I'll probably get slaughtered

CBR
01-03-2003, 19:39
Well I started with 4v4's...got slaughtered by some of the veterans asked why and how it happened (army routing so quickly and other things) Looking at their armies and setup, checking unitstats, play some more etc etc.

If you are a newbie say so and listen to advice. I have encountered several people who rarely talks or just never listens to you..thats not the way forward heh.

Just be open and willing to learn and try to play as a team and you will learn much.

Cid,

1v1's are good to learn how to stand and not be run over at first, and then progress to attacking.
2v2's are good for learning team play without the added complexity of massive concentration of forces which requires additional know how to properly counter.

A good partner in 2v2 can be a mentor, but the person has to have the time to devote to helping you out, and that might channel you into a certain style of play before you've had time to establish you're own style. I like the idea of playing with a variety of players as ally. Expect to play about 50 battles to get up to speed. Of course, that will vary depending on how much you learn in each battle and your own abilities. The game is extremely challenging but great once you get to the higher skill levels. Astute purchasing of the army and upgrades is a game in itself.

Or you can do it CBR's way and get your head beat in for 150 battles or so. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif j/k

Darn it, I see more 3v3 voters but no posts saying why? So I'd ask again: seriously, what's appealing about 3v3 compared to a 4v4 http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif ?

EDIT: I just saw Cid's post, if I were a newbie again, I'd first start with a 1v1, and then after I got used to the dirty details in MP I'd then move on to team battles. Because even though you've been playing hard or expert in SP, AI's manouvering technique is still dumb and senseless compared to a human player it's not really a substitute.

Thanks,

I think I'll give myself another week or so of outnumbered Custom Battles in order to minimize humiliation (if possible) and then try a few 1/1s.

Gotta break that Pause Key habit

Bosdur,

The problem with 4v4 is the initial deployment. I voted for 3v3, but 2v2 has consistency going for it. Two players who play together a lot become extremely good at knowing what each will do. You don't even have to communicate, and can still play like a single army.

Cid,

don't bother with the custom battles if ya already know the basics. Tactics that are effective against the AI don't necessarily work in MP. And, the best way to break the Pause Key habit is not to let ya have the possibility... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Another thing that has helped me at least is the replay feature. If something happens in a game that ya don't understand, like yer men suddenly routing, save the battle as a replay and try to find out _why_ yer men routed. Replays are good for observing other players' styles and tactics too.

I bet there are helpful vets around who will give ya pointers if ya ask nicely, don't spam etc. I would. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

About the poll... I voted for 3v3, but 4v4 is almost as good. I have previously liked smaller games because it's not always easy to assemble a good team for both sides. For some reason (people playing MTW during their holidays?), that hasn't been much of a problem during these past few days, although the server problems at the start of the year were very annoying and made me cranky. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wacko.gif

I voted for 3 on 3 cos sometimes in a 4 on 4 someone (ally or enemy) would find themselves on the end of a double team right from the start. Invariably this usually decides the battle.

I voted for 3v3, but I also like 1v1, 2v2 and 4v4 games.

I agree with Kocmoc...not easy to form a good team, so it's often 3 1v1s on same map.

3 good players together don't make a good team straight away, I think most clans have good teams. A clan-team will almost always win against 3 players who hardly know eachother.

Clan vs Clan games are just great (it feels good to kick another clan...and it hurts to get kicked by another clan)

I like 3v3s most. The maps just fit them perfectly - the deployment zones in a 4v4 were always bad, often leading to a sudden death of an army, many times destroying the fun of all the game altogether.

In 3v3 you have the centre player and the two flanks, teamwork is a must and the idealogy of 3x1v1 just leads to static, no fun game.

2v2 are definetely my second choice. The communication between the two players is stronger and more 'vivid' than in a 3v3/4v4 and the best players often create practically one, huge army.

Fun anyway.

Yep Ya can see the difference between pickup teams and well-established clan teams. The players of pickup teams generally keep their armies in a single clump, perhaps occasionally sending small detachments to help allies.

Those teams who have trained it can mix up their forces, allowing them to focus and manage the amount of attention and control they have over different parts of the battlefield.

I do not think that the 4v4 would be much worse than the 3v3. If you are the front-left player you should deploy back as far as possible and the back-left left player should deploy as forward as possible. That is all. The 4 armies can almost deploy in a line. Moreover the quick double-team that was possible and always the preferable attack in STW-MI does not work in MTW. Units fight much longer in MTW, it is not possible to destroy an army within seconds (at least given equal skills). I have seen a few quick double-team attacks and they never worked out as intended.

Cheetah is right that they can always deploy back to prevent a double team.

I like to deploy upfront anyway cause i love it when everyone attacks me. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

So, i voted for 4v4, but i really like 6v6 and 12 player free for alls the most. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I'll always play in big games teamwork or not it dosn't matter to me. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

CBR
01-04-2003, 20:07
Yes it is not really that hard to deploy so right flank/left forward wont get doubled quick. The worst cases I see are newbies deploying way forward, with their side to the enemy and ofc with their backs to the enemy heh

I actually like to be the 4th man position in a 4v4 so i voted for the 8 player game. Being in the tight spot is more fun, and if I'm lucky I can come out on top with a couple of units and my general alive. Then I have less micromanagemnt the rest of the game.

I just miss my yari cav general. He always made it to the end of the battle http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I can understand why people would prefer 3v3 though. the deploy is a little more consistent.

I voted for 4v4, because, imo, eventhough you rarely get a good 4v4 with no drops/weak players/bad connections/teams with all four players as the Byz/etc. if you actually do....you can have some truly epic battles. If 8 good players get together with semi-balanced armies....its the most fun you can have.
