View Full Version : What Triggers Routing?

Which variables are used to determine whether a unit will rout at any given moment? Is it just the number of losses that a unit has sustained? Does the attack advantage of the enemy with which a unit is engaged matter (hence units that are 'losing badly' are likelier to rout than units that are 'winning easily'--I have seen 'winning easily' units rout before)? Is there a panic threshold? I've seen Cav units charge spears from the rear causing the spears to rout immediately. Obviously, valor/morale establish some sort of threshold...but what is the rest of the formula?

I think it's only a valour thing. Death or general will cost you an initial drop in valour. They'll recover soon after that but still the valour will be lower. A certain percentage of losses within the units causes valour to drop. Same for other units who rout makes other units drop in valour. being outnumbered makes you drop in valour. And the list goes on and on. What the threshold in valour is to rout, I don't know though.

This is what you need (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=14;t=2726) You can find most answers here.

I believe the rout threshold is morale = -16. Once a unit routs, it won't rally until it gets back up to morale = -6. Hitting the rally button gives a +8 infusion of morale on a routed unit, and not being near any enemy units gets another +4 morale for a total of +12. However, the additional morale penalty incured from running to exhaustion can drop morale so low that you can no longer rally the unit.

Also, playing with Elmo as your teammate is considered a major trigger to routing. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
