I say yes, but who knows The Viking expansion might be so good that the current problems with the game will all be worth it. Ok maybe not, but I'll stay optimistic http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif.

Yeah, I did moan. And usually when I do something, I do it for a reason. Unless tequila is involved. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

What happened to Gamespy when the year changed? I could swear I never had this can't-see-any-games-when-entering-lobby -problem before?

hmm...

"playerlists still not refreshed" check, in fact it became worse... I can only hope it's not permanent

"online environment is hostile" hmm check, for some at least it is http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

"unitbalance deserves a second look" big check

"font hurts the eyes" oh c'mon, ya'd moan about this?

and yes, the list goes on.

I _truly_ hope the expansion is good. I also hope that a certain game, which should go gold soon is good, but as I got a peek on the press release my hopes ain't _that_ high...

Good point cran ive also noticed big massive huge problems with mp since the new year.

i cant see any games without relogging 5-6 times and i can never see one of my clan members games unless its full and then he has to kick sum1.

also damned noobs playing my clan SPQR keep calling us cheats cos were wiping the floor with them.

I hope the addon has lotsa improvememnts but wat about all the new units theyl be unbalanced too probably sos there's gotta be a patch.

I concur with Krast, I would vote for "Gah".

Player list refereshable -> Would be nice, but can live with.

What hostile environment ? Hm....Ive been playing mostly at midnights est, and I dont see any hostility at this period of time. I just got the chance to play at noontime est recently and play with euro based clans where the wolves are online mostly. Even then I dont see many hostilities, but Ive yet to see for long. I think this is just clans' drama dispute, im indifferent between seeing this in foyer and seeing ppl chat. People that spam with harrassing comments is much more a problem i.e CEO_CPU and Giname_[RB], fortunately we have #ignore and #ban for it.

unitbalance deserves a second look ->Of course.

Font hurts the eyes -> Maybe hardware is the problem, and it's to one and its own.

I'd like to see another patch.

Besides that, I remember some discussion about the wonderful things CA would provide via GameSpy for those with the will and know-how to run their own ladders, leagues and other good community building features. There was talk of "rooms" for various languages too. The whole GameSpy features aspect seems to have died right from the start. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif It also seems to have been forgotten by everyone.

playerlists still not refreshed

This is the most annoying one.

online envirronment is hostile

Define hostile? Do you mean hard to use, or that the other players are assholes?

unitbalance deserves a second look

I'm personally happy with it.

font hurt teh eyes

I don't mind the font

Just my 2 cents.

Let's just pray The Viking Add on will improve things a bit.

I really don't understand why MP gets little (or worse) support. After all...online play is far more challenging, more fun also....above all...it's the future.

I do understand selling games for SP is "fire and forget", while selling games for the MP often means "backfire".

It's far more profitable to sell as to support.

The patch could have been far beteer.

Missed opportunity I'm afraid. Pre patch the game would easily be regarded as a "waste of time" MP wise, by most players (including friends of mine who still don't play MP with me, as it's too buggy for them). http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif they prefer to go for some shooter like Soldier of Fortune 2 where the MP is faultless. Launch game, click server list, click refresh, join game and you are on your way to hours of hassle free MP fun.

Post patch it's much better however there are still too many issues.

IMHO the MP refresh, hosting, droppin, lobby friendliness, are the main issues which should have been resolved in the 1.1, along with the invincible spears.

Personally, I don't think unit balance is an overwhelming issue unless people exploit it. Archers need to do more damage that's for sure. Horse archers are good but should be far more realistic. Muslim troops should be more realistic, specially the legendary elite such as the Janissary & the Mamluk. JHI is a bit like baby food at times http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Let's hope that the Add On will rid us of more MP bugs and improve MP considerably.

many problems

what we need?

if possible, some fast solutions
i dunno what to do about the gamespy-server problems...
but i know what we could do with the balancing, this could be easy and fast done, at least some major problems could be solved.

this is something they could do for us, and i dont belive that activision has a problem with 1 more small-fast-MP-patch

i got about 10 times droped yesterday
i had massiv logon problems
impossible to speak to players in prov as they are greyed out

we have so many bugs and what they do? NOTHING

STOP....

they do something, *BOWS*...they bring a new superp Add-On, and this will solve all our problems, BUT first.....U HAVE TO PAY. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

In STW times i thought EA is a big problem, but if i see the current problems and how they DONT solve anything, i have my doubts about the old times...and who was the real problem.

balancing is a tough job, and i think it is acceptable that the devs didn't get this right first time, if they offer follow up support? hopefully the add-on will be better....who knows ??

what really bothers me is the foyer, correct me if im wrong but i think it is ***** responsible, im not saying i could do any better but the amount of bugs that are there is a disgrace imo the fact that we paid money for this software is a joke, ive got a computer science degree and if i had handed in that foyer as a project then i think i would be lucky to scrap a pass... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif and i would personally feel like i let the rest of the team down http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

Agreed youssof, the TW series could use some competition. Think about the hardware market, comrades. We'd probably still have to shell out $2000 for a basic, low-end computer if it weren't for the price wars between Intel and AMD (and NVIDIA & ATI, of course.)

Hmm "no, dont touch my lancers" was very very tempting http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

The foyer should really have a major overhaul both in stability and looks.

Balancing..well there could some big changes and some small changes..the big ones I guess are not very likely but I do hope they have done something when the expansion comes as it looks like we are not getting a patch before its out.

Right now we know both what the expansion will be AND the next TW...seems like they are busy heh. but not many details yet. I hope we will get some details about Vikings soon and what changes CA thinks about doing.

I am not certain as to how to vote. On the one hand, this is an incredibly buggy game. (See approximately 30% of my posts on the old site) However, both Giljay and Longjohn appear to be highly dedicated people who would like nothing more than to give us all what we want. Perhaps some of these problems are insurmountable given the budgetary/time constraints imposed by the powers that be. So, do I feel betrayed? Yes. Do I know by whom? No. Is this, bugs notwithstanding, the best computer game that I have played in the last 5 years? Yes. Will I buy another iteration in the series? Yes. Will I continue to bitch and moan? Without a doubt.

Gamedevelopers are also restricted by the producers. If the producer says: "hell I think this game is finished we realese it now" there's not much developers like Gil can do. It's all about the money, so the only remedy to the problem we have is imo competition from other games.

Quote from totalwar.com

Quote[/b] ]Fantastic news as we take the top spot in PC Gamer's top 100 PC games of all time. After several years at number one, Half-life bows out gracefully to third place while Medieval: Total War lords it at number one, directly above Deus Ex. With two other such outstanding games sharing the podium, this is a stellar achievement and the whole team at Creative Assembly are over the moon to receive this honour.

Is the current MP system worthy of being part of THAT? This game needs constant patching. Like all the other hell games, which are even inferior to MTW to start with? Shame in my opinion. What is the problem? Lack of financing? Lack of dedication? Lack of interest in MTW because they're working on a new game? They didn't care about STW because they worked on MTW...and now the same happens? Blame Activision?

Dissapointed.

well i am sure the developers are not just playing bad and thus not releasing a new patch. there must be a reason , financial or a reason of marketing. HOWEVER they shouldnt be surprised if people feel reluctant to buy a new game of theirs the first week or two of its release , i know i m gonna wait to see if they are interested or not before i buy an other game. MTW is a GREAT game , its a gaming experience , but it saddens me that it could be much better if circumstances were ok.

If you're really dissatisfied then don't buy the next Total War game. There are far worse rip offs on the market. I wasted my money on MOHAA. I don't feel that way about MTW.

Relog after battle and restart MTW after hosting fixes the greyed names and ctd upon hosting the next game. Even if you simply put up a game and immediately exit, you have to restart MTW or you may ctd or have other problems on the next hosting.

Twice last night I could not host a game where Elmark joined. Some of us made it to the deployment screen, but others had the black screen or were stuck at the continue button. We could all send text messages. In both cases, as soon as Elmark esc, the game ran fine. I don't think something like that is a GameSpy or MTW issue. It's an internet routing issue or ISP problem outside of the game.

The font is readable.

The play balance is fixable by us with the modifiable stats provided by CA, but the problem is that players can't agree on what it should be.

somethimes i spent 15 mins logging on, cant remember that happening in stw days besides when the server appeared to be down.

its obvious ur a positivie guy who comes online once in a while. die hard mp players face much worse hardships.

and its not about wasting money, its about marketing, hyping, keeping promises, patches and teh game great potential.

for me personally i care more about die hard online players like shadecran who considers to leave teh game due to teh problems we face than i would care about happy people playing sp campaigns and consider teh AI to be great.

i care abouit dozens of people finding workarounds and keeping faith that one day online will be a pleasure again.

what risk do u take to reduce online troubles:
- to log off and logon after each game or
- to joi another one without logging and hope the game will run fine

u simply cant expect to relog for every game since looging procedure is still not that fast. somethimes ur hours online for just a few games.

It's almost impossible to find a harmony between players on which and how units are overpowered or underpowered. The biggest efforts next to perfection have probably been STW 1.0/1.12 and MI 1.03, yet many disagreed on some issues on both. We can't fix the foyer bugs, the crappy server and the useless waste of time to get a game going. It's true that we do need to find a harmony between players yet I see no effort from the developers which should be there considering this game is supposedly the best game ever made, which CA themselves boast about.

Let's face it, CA alone can't do nothing. Their best effort after STW was MI 1.0, which was absolutely the worst MP Total War ever imagined by humans, elfs, dwarfs and aliens alike. They need the players that play the game online - ie. the community. The Org and the beta testing team have been the best medium between community and developers, but the early news that "there won't be another patch" just kicks in and hurts hard. What are we here for dammit?

Yet, I love Total War and would still play it, trying to avoid and tolerate the bugs and imbalances...and hoping for a better future. I just hope my zeal for TW doesn't turn into utter and pure stupitidy in few years' time.

Fast,

I guess the answer for me is that I don't expect it to work. I mean, what does $40 USD get you these days? Not much. I'm not really defending the devs. If the quality of their work fell below my standard, I wouldn't play the game, although, I bought it with trepedation after the WE/MI v1.0 fiasco. I felt like I was placing a bet when I bought the game. I genuinly like the game.

The game isn't perfect, but marketing avoids mentioning anything negative. We all know how that works or are supposed to I guess. I'm a more conservative game purchaser now because I learned my lesson the hard way with SSI's Great Naval Battles series. Spent over $150, and that's probably like $250 now, on that series hoping that each installment would be better, but it actually got worse and the great potential of the first one of the series was never realized. I do think that MTW MP got short changed in the sense that not enough man hours got allocated to it. The v1.0 was really bad, and I stopped playing online. Without the v1.1 patch, I would not have gone back to playing MTW online. You can be outraged with the game or whatever, but it's detrimental to one's mental health to stay like that for a long time and keep exposing yourself to the situation that makes you angry.

Magyar,

I don't come online once in a while. I play MTW online every day. Day before yesterday I played 12 battles in 10 hours, and last night 9 battles in 9 hours. I have 407 internet logfiles since Nov 5th. That's an average of about 5 battles per day over the last 60 days after taking out an estimated 25% false starts. These are almost all 3v3 and 4v4 games.

It never takes me 15 min to log on. It takes about 15 seconds, but sometimes I get a logon error, and the timeout on that is about 2 min. Then a retry works 95% of the time for me. That's probably why restart for me isn't a big deal. Why can I logon fast and you can't if it's a GameSpy problem?

Yes, marketing hype. The world is full of it. After all, lying isn't illegal unless you're under oath or talking to the police. Broken promises. I have a list that would stretch around a city block.

I just gave two workarounds, but I guess they would only be good for a player that does not take 15 min to logon. I mean that is a problem, but I don't think CA or GameSpy can fix that.

I've been going to play WE/MI on Sundays, and it doesn't work that great either. It's better than it was because EA moved it to a new server, but that was only just before MTW was released. Since many players have broadband connections now, the gameplay can be way too fast. It always was too fast, and now it's worse.

Cranberry isn't quitting because we have great games together, but I better let him win the next one. It all comes down to the ratio of good games to bad games, and if a player has enough time to commit to playing. If that ratio isn't high enough or the false starts waste too much time, a player will leave and move on to something else. I try to make my games fun for players, and refrain from taking the Byz of Spanish myself so players might feel they have a wider choice of faction themselves, but I had to give up on Russians because I lost every time with them to some inf charge.

One thing that's really bothering me is the move to polygons for Rome Total War. I have a very bad feeling about this, and we all know how the new game will kill the old one as far as online play goes. But, apparently MTW online play is already really bad for many players and they won't miss it. Just the same, we have more players online with MTW than we ever had with STW or WE/MI.

Glorious achievements in SP. Now there is a bug that everyone knew about, including CA, long before the v1.1 patch was released. An attempt was made to fix it, but it's still broken. You know what I think? I think CA is over their heads with this game. The devs can't make the game function fully in the time frame they have available to do the job. It's a classic management vs engineering situation, and being an engineer, I know that side of it. Mangement never accepts the engineer's estimate of how much time they need to do the job.

I agree that it is detrimental to stay moaning about problems which won't be resolved in MTW but I do believe that it is equally detrimental to stay silent and not openly say your feelings.

The current MP system is shameful for the stature of this game. Guys like Yuuki that have few problems with the foyer and Gamespy are probably a minority. I have, and loads. I'm even on ADSL and with a fast machine. I have heard endless tales of droppings, unseen games, CTDs...something is wrong...and Gamespy isn't Our Lady the Server. Actually it is plainly merde considering the game, especially in the last days. And all CA needs to do is stop thinking about new Total War games for a second and dedicate manhours and support to the current TW game by encouraging new patches, testing new stat files, officialising them and stuff like that. This "feel" has been lacking and that's what I'm actually talking about.

I cannot but ask for a better Total War III...union is strength..and we should collectively make it clear to CA what does their MP community want.

Patches, support and dedication...especially when we most need it.

Fast,

Yes $40 USD is a lot of money for some people, but it's not for CA and not for me either. I was surprised to see MTW introduced at the same price point as STW. I though it would be $50 since most games now are at least that much. If I owned CA, it would go out of business because I'd keep people working on MTW or STW for that matter. I don't think it's at all easy to track down these bugs.

Tera,

You don't really expect anything to change with TotalWar III do you? It's the same company using the same development philosophy or model or whatever you want to call it. It's possible the Euro players are having more problems with GameSpy because the server is farther away. We've been through this several times with CA. There will only be one server. It doesn't appear to make much sense to use such a restrictive online model when the game isn't even marketed for it's online play, and some insignificant number of the buyers are online players, but maybe that has something to do with the single server that doesn't serve everyone equally well. People are irrational beings, they don't necessarily do things because they make sense. In an era where online gaming is the wave of the future, CA markets a complicated realtime tactical game to SP which is hampered by the usual predictable ai issues? I think online play is only included because it can increase the volume at the point of sale since they can put the words "multiplayer over the internet" on the box. The glowing magazine reviews I read didn't even test multiplayer. I'm amazed it works as well as it does. I can understand the complaints, but there is a lot of inertia to be overcome to get CA to change a successful business practice. I'm sure changing looks like a big risk for little potential gain to them. I think you would need 1000's of people complaining.

Foyer bugs I I've seen are:

1) Players not becoming ungreyed when returning from a battle which prevents you from private messaging them, and also might prevent them from seeing a hosted game.

2) Full restart of MTW needed after hosting to avoid possible CTD or non-seeable game on the next hosting attempt.

3) Seemingly random inability to get to the battlefield after eveyone in the game is at 100% connectivity.

4) Frequent disconnect from server after hosting a big game. Not an issue for me since I restart after every hosting anyway.

5) Scroll lock after a battle if I was holding any text window scroll buttons at battle launch. Full restart of MTW is required to clear this problem.

6) Frequent "logon error" or "account details incorrect" when logging onto GameSpy.

7) Inability to see hosted games of certain players unless I relog after the game is already up.

8) Type font is unnecessarily small. The fact that you can't type to the end of the message bar is evidence of this.

9) Loss of the alternate chat rooms we had in STW.

Quote[/b] ]Cranberry isn't quitting because we have great games together, but I better let him win the next one. It all comes down to the ratio of good games to bad games, and if a player has enough time to commit to playing.

Bah, I don't mind losing as long as the battle is interesting. I often pick fun armies and even in the TWA mini-tourney I stuck to my standard arbs. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

But yer right, the ratio is important. I'd say that for me it's been so far an "epic" game once in a week, a great game once in a night, a few good games every night and a couple of standard one-sided massacres every night. Good enough for me.

The bigger issue will be time, however. Beginning next week, my RL schedule will be much tighter than in the fall, and I won't have nearly as much time to play games. And when I do play online, I'd prefer a game that has less waiting and more playing.

I'll stick with MTW unless something better appears, I'm a sucker for the game, despite its flaws. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wacko.gif

Fast,

I think CA is aware of all of the issues I listed. It would be good if GilJaysmith could get another crack at some of those things. If Total War III is going to have the same kind of online interface, then it could help TW III to address these issues in MTW. However, even if not I agree with you Fast that MTW is supposed to work. If it were up to me, I would keep someone on it at least until all the bugs were ironed out. I would be embarrassed to have players come to my #1 rated game and encounter the bugs # 1, 2, 4, 5 and 7 that I listed. #3 may be an internet connectivity issue and not something under the game's control. I didn't list random disconnects from the foyer because I don't know if that's still an issue or not.

Hmm.. i voted yes. It dosn't really matter anyway since they have more important things to do.

I could make a huge list of bugs and fixes that are needed, but the total wars aren't ment for multi. If they did spend more time working on the multiplayer, you could easly see 1,000 people online. Since the foyer is so bad, we won't reach over 200.

I doubt total war 3 will use the same interface, cause that would be just silly. I think the new total war will have better multiplayer support, so we won't have to moan as much. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I told you all not to be in a hurry as to unit balance; take time evaluate, get it right....but people were in a hurry because of game bugs..... CA has shown us a pattern now. One patch after Shogun release, one after Mongols one after medieval..... we cant expect them to do more than that in the future, gripe though we may, so lets get some lead gamers(online) together who will compile a list of 'needs' and be ready to put together our complaints after the add-on comes out... If we dont start this now, CA will be compelled (by tons of noob complaints ect.) to crank out a post Vicking patch that wont fix anything (just like last one), Thus I suggest a commity; The pre-patch commity? composed of a dozen or so online hard-cores, and start lobbying for reconition from CA now, that way after the add-on arrives the commity can direct CA to what is needed for mulit balance, rather than allow them to be driven be the masses of uninformed noobs ect,.....Maggy, would you care to start such a commity? Such a group should be diverse; different clans ect. You would have to become a bit more political, your first reaction of reaching for the sword stiffeled, and the more bitter 'please' learned....Bitter indeed, but such an 'offical' commity might be the best for us all, I would be glad to be on such a thing....if you would do so, I suggest casting about for your dozen or so.... I can be contacted via our web site.

Lahll,

I think the sense of urgency was there because there was only going to be one patch. Three different programmers were involved regarding playbalance issues, foyer issues and SP strategy issues. I don't think asking for playbalance adjustments undermined getting the foyer issues fixed.

Concerning MP playbalance, I think only unit cost adjustments and possibly more reasonable second settings other than "off" on ammo, fatigue and morale are within the realm of possibility for the add-on. Direct stat changes on the units would alter the SP playbalance, which is apparently fine now.

hi Lahll

well at those time i was busy with pre-work on Tgate. u ever had a bouncing TubbyTinker in your camp for a long term observation?

secondly teh patched solved the annoying online bugs, remember the drops every few minutes, being online was a nightmare, now just a bad dream.

history made clear we need 2 patches.

one fast patch for the most annoying things, and much later a patch for balancing issues.

there is a prepatch community called the betatesters who are made up of the most senior members u see around here. i was one of them but resigned before last patch cuz imo teh betatesters focus firstly on teh tasks they are given (by CA thru Erado) and mostly single player.
when i resigned i proposed to them to add amp and or spoon to their group.

as long teh mp part is neglected i cant waste energy on that pre-patchingcircus. perhaps something for u to join?

Was an idea,... but whilethe room bugs are not as bad as they were; they are still worse than under EA... fewer in game drops but I still have a host of problems, for game balance... one imbalance traded for another equils a no gain..
