View Full Version : Strategy for 4v4 per map

I was wondering if anyone would like to discuss certain maps and the best army and ways of attacking each as a team. Since MTW came out, I have noticed a lack of real teamplay and have been guilty of it myself a few times. With the current game, tactics may have less of an effect than the old STW, MI/WE games, but are still important on hilly maps. Lets start with HillyInland maps and Lush environment, 4v4, 20k florins each person, Summer, all defaults on, and no arty.

HillyInland1 - Any ideas? I will take a look at this tonight during lunch at work and give my idea for attacking this map in a 4v4.

Well, one tactic which has worked quite well for me has one player with only heavy defencive units with arbies while the second has cav and medium-heavy inf to flank and encircle. In one battle I held the line while my ally had his whole army hidden in a forest except for his gen which was beside mine...

You should have seen the words that they were typing after their ranged units were cut down and a whole crap-load of chiv knights charged into the rear of their whole collom... LOL No Swoosh I have an Alienware 2.8 P4 and Radeon 9000 Mobility video I have it on. I would love to discuss paths of attack, etc. but I am having a problem on how to show this in a post. I cannot take a minimap to show it since it does not show hills and such and I cannot take a TGA pic in game because the file would be too large to post here. Any suggestions?

Well, lets see... some general points (without respect to any particular map):

Generally, attack on your strong side (left) and hold on your weak side (right). At least, do this until the other team gets used to it--then start attacking on the right http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif.

Also, when attacking hills, generally attack the lowest hill first. Takeout the enemy with the least height advantage and then go for the next heighest enemy.

Also, by attacking 2v1 against an enemy on an isolated hill, you should be able to win. If his allies come over to stop you then they have abandoned their hills and lose that advantage.

Those principles are fairly basic and would normally apply to all hilly maps.

I had an idea on how to defend a hill. Please tell me whether it would work or not.

I figured that to hold a hill, one needs to defend not a common latitude(imaginary horizontal line on minimap), but to defend a common altitude, conforming to the side of the hill, with all units facing straight down the hill at the same height as one another. That way, no flanking unit can get a height advantage on your troops and your troops will retain their height advantage at all times.

A slight change of topic... I am going 3v3 on hillinland3

I have played multiple (10+) 3v3 on Hillinland3.

So far, in defense nobody got the balls to sit on the center hill as Defense center player. That's pretty far away from allies, but not being there gives away a very valuable asset of the map.
AND, I have never seen any defense team victory. Only att victory. (I have always been on ATT side&#33http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I start to think that if the central defense is not on the hill, defense gives up way too much initiative and attack players can go 2 on 1 wherever they want (attack right being easiest).
On the other hand, central defense on this hill is going for a tough time... Right defense neesds to come fast... I would give a lot of cav to left def, but let them stay a little behind, and see what right ATT is up to.

In 3v3 how would you set up defense on Hillinland3?

Well, you know, you right a post and then you play the game, and the next thing is;

Defense not on the central hill (as usual). But attackers performed like s*** (first time i see a 2 digit kills and 1 to 10 kill ratio 60 to 600), including me (as usual) (did 500 kills for 800 loss/ still scored 2/3 of ATT kills).

Still, look at hillinland 3 and let me know how you would defend it in 3v3
