so what about the animals in the game http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

ok birds & elephants will of corse be in the game but how about african lions, camels, zebras , animals can play differant parts in the game maybe hawk scouts, wolfs and dogs to go into the tree's to look for ambushes and animals inside the forest will kill you scouts and lions will hunts your men when there on there on there own somewhere it would be fun to do watch this.

how about when you cross mini rivers which are shallow some of you men get attacked by crocs http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif well maybe over the top now but even if animals were neutral they would bring the game to life more http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Maybe read some real roman history rather than just play praetorians. Scouts were on foot or rode horses.

I think your game would be TW: When animals attack.

sorry just too tempting.

I dont think any animal worth rendering in the game would stick around at the sight of an army. The ground vibrations alone would send many animals away from the area before they even came into sight.

Farms of pigs and cattle might be included somewhere, but you have to think that any farmer worth his salt would have evacuated the animals ahead of time.

picture this:

a general is trying to get round the flanks when a lion jumps him. little did the lion know the generals 40 strong body guard where a few feet away.

animal attacks on lone humans are rare never mind on humansd during a war.

maybe vultures picking off the bones of the dead might work though.

I can think of a zillion things that need attention and processing power before trying to turn any TW title into a walk in the zoo.........

in an interview I read a developer said that FLAMING PIGS would be included as an anti-elephant tactic I guess mice just don't work. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif But this might have been a joke. Anyone out there care to confirm?

Squealing pigs were a tactic used by Romans against Phyruss's elephants (275BC-ish), and also by Megarans against Antogonos Gonatos, with the added refinement of covering the poor animal in tar and setting it alight to ensure adequate squealing, and probably the flames would upset the elephants too since most animals shy away from fire

antogonos subsequently stabled his elephants with pigs so they would be used to the sound

yes I have heard of their tactical use, poor animals http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif but I was asking if it would be possible to use them in the game.

I discussed the inclusion of flaming pigs earlier. They will probably be fired from a catapult, which means that their inclusion is only a matter of featuring alternate ammo types, which is probably a goal that CA is shooting for. The use of fire in the game would make the alternate ammo type of flaming arrows a near necessity as well.

Wow this is the "gang up on Stormer" thread eh?

lol

was a fun idea, at least. It would be cool to have a few attack dogs to accompany my general into battle.

At totalwar.com, flaming Pigs were infact verified by the good CA folks. You will have a special unit that can set fire to, and release them. The pigs will then scurry towards the elephants, engulfed in flames, scaring the big lugs into a violent frenzy. (well, thats the plan when they let the hogs go at least...)

As an aside in gruesome goodness (tarring and burning pigs falls into this category) There will be Barbarian units, that throw HEADS.. yes, decapitated HEADS at their enemy, before charging.... Now if there is anything at ALL that will make you buy this game, surely that is it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

1.) Don't diss penguins. The supreme animals on the horizon, I tell ya Just read some of my OLD threads in the tavern.
2.) Seriously though, I hope Rome:Total War has some selection of animals. In Medieval, checking the "fauna" button mean whether or not you wanted little black specks that vaguely resembled birds flying on the field. I hope that, even if they don't add animals, that they make the few that they have more real-like.

I think Kongamato has it right. Most wild animals would run away far far away from an army, and especially a battle.

So I don’t think animals, other than those used specifically in war fair, belong on the battlefield. Though i agree better-animated birds would be nice, and maybe a few circling vultures.

So i think we are going to have to be content with elephants, horses, flaming pigs and rabid penguins… and really what more do you need.
