I was wonering, the romans used formations and their troops were organised, but iirc the egyptians and barbarians(and probably the carthaginians too)did'nt have organised armies,i was wondering whats the use of formations when your playing these factions?

well this is the 2nd topic on formations, but on your question i think you find the carthaginans had very organised armies so did the egyptions, barbians were not of corse but i wouldnt expect formations to be differant from what we see in MTW atm.

LIke Stormer said the Carthagians and Egyptians had organized armies. As far as barbarians and most armies that fought h2h it was hard to control them once they had engaged the army even well trained troops. Only the most highly disciplined armies didnt chase routers. Harold of Hastings had a very organized army with a solid shield wall vs William the conquerer when a group of Williams soldiers routed (either planned or by accident). Harolds men pursued and broke the ranks and made themselves susceptible to a counter.

Perhaps barbarians can have a very high impetous factor with them. Impetous units often rush without orders if not dilitgently watched also impetous units are hard to disengage when you want to stop them from chasing routed units and return them into the main fray. Barbarians can also be in a lose formation similar to fanatics giving them a higher turn radius making them realisticly a bit harder to manuever and they will have no formation bonuses. Since they wont get any formation bonuses like roman legionares they will however keep there full power in wooded areas while Roman legionares will lose there formation bonuses.

i like that alot, because could you blame the barbarians shitting in mud holes and living in the woods enough to drive anyone mad http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

No, you're right...but you're wrong too http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

The Baeleric Isles were first conquered by the Carthaginians, and it was Carthage that used the slingers first.

Rome took the Isles from Carthage during the 2nd Punic war, and there after the slingers became a common part of Roman armies also.

It's probably easier to go see your local wargames club - especially in England where there's lots of them - look up hte British Historical Gaming Society (BHGS), or the Society of Ancients (www.soa.org I think) on the net for contacts.
