PCGAMER (UK) Feb 2003 has a preview of Rome:Total War. The preview is 8 pages long and there is also a video on the CD.
The graphics look amazing and the article tells quite an interesting story.
I will attemp to scan the pages in so you can all have a look for yourselves. But this wont be until later tonight.
The Release date say Feb 2003, but i think this is a typo, and should be Feb 2004. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
There is then another section in the mag which say release date Christmas. So I dont know
Anyway back to the article. I will also post some of the pictures from the disc.
See you all later.....

Disappointment perhaps? I for one was hoping for
BARBIE: TOTAL WAR.
Playable factions include Ken, Barbie, the other one, the other one, and the other one.
Glorious acheivements include getting the house after the divorce and Who gets custody of the Kids.
RPG type simulations of how much working out to do before Barbies' outlandish and improbable figure causes her own spine to snap and building up money to pay for Kens dental plan.
Coming as soon as the dolls develop knee joints...

Brilliant Shade - many thanks, saved me the cost of a PC Gamer next Thursday http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
Whoa, very good... now God willing, I will pick this up next month.
BTW does this mean we can only play Roman legions?
Vertigo10

Nope; according to some other posts, there are many other factions. I believe it's explained in the Next TW Game is Rome: Total War post in the Entrance Hall.

new computer time.
This looks sweet
you can expect similar changes in the high-level risk-style stretegy section too. Primarily, that it's no longer a risk-style section built out of chuncks. Instead, it's something considerably more ambitious. Rome: Total War features a continuous 3d map covering the whole of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, and you can zoom down at any point on the map to the battlefield. In theory you could walk your army across the 3d terrain all the way from France to Egypt. This means ythat you can expect to meet on approximetely 10,000 battlefields...
Also mentioned in the article are day/night cycles, different climates for different regions, each side has totally unique units, flaming pigs(against elephants), digging under castle walls, seasons change, build forts to guard mountain passes, place units in the woods for ambushes, ford rivers, and move your army through different more difficult or easy routs http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif

I am puzzled by the possible mechanics of the new strategic map. If there are no provinces, what will represent who controls what areas of the map? Previously the province borders contained the faction colors and indicated who was in control of what region. If the new map lacks these individual borders I am curious how they will exhibit regional control.
It is thrilling to see so many of the concerns and ideas expressed right here in this forum are being addressed or incorporated into the future of the Total War series Thanks devs

I`ve just read it all again - I bet other developers are now thinking "bollocks".:joker:
If it delivers what it says (and I`m going to be hitting the knees praying that it does)this is going to make every other rts game look a bit lightweight.
I suppose that the only downside, and I`m sorry to have to mention it,is what happens next. Will there be a MW4?

Yeah, I'm just wondering; Does that mean that if a kill is not made by a soldier, do they dodge and block with their shield like they do in the video (for the general vs. general part)? That'd be fairly interesting; no more mindless swinging...could make actually watching each individual soldier fight be quite interesting.

I'm theorizing that they will have different colours on the zoomed out map donating whose faction owns what piece of land, also in the preview it says that governors can be installed in settlements, so maybe each settlement will have flags donating who owns the settlement. Damn we hope we find more information soon, cos they make no mention of trade, anything about ships, or how units and armaments are recruited/produced e.t.c.

it looks hyping nice and if the games potential is being abused again i personally get to London.
i hope they skip some sp-campaigns in favour of a patch.... and that many features (logfiles/replays) are added to create our own campaigns... sigh
lets hope this dream dont end up in a soapbulb
I love everything mentioned.
my two big things of the moment are:
1. The ability to coordinate attacks with allies and move through their territory. That is great as this will allow more treaties and diplomacy options which were lacking in MTW.
2. The new strategic map. This is said to allow full zoom and placement. Very strategic indeed.
My big mystery is how this works.
Will RTW be turned based or real time?
From the article it says you could march your troops across the map and zoom and place them everywhere so how does this work?
Is it still turn based and they can just move so far at a time then the ai gets a turn?
Also, I guess the cities themselves will replace the province boundaries and maybe we will have a cultural color like civ3 has.
Any ideas here?

check out the seiges.
- men on walls, seige ladders, tunnelers, battering rams
whole cities
the diplomacy
- treaties, tribute, pass through allies land.
- the 3d strat map
that is actually the battle map as well being able to guard stategic points like mountain passes. make raids and ambushes
as you can tell this what i have dreamed of in a game but never thought anyone could possibly make it.
if all these elements make it in to the final version i will gladly pay 200 bucks for this game (australian - eg 100 american)
and i dont care if i need a new computer to play it.
questions raised concerning copyright issues of posting images in forum,
but if shade had merely copied word for word and posted a few cutout images there would be no problem,
and considering it was many many weeks after UK previews of medieval before even a glimmer appeared in ozzie magazines, info which was of lesser quality than UK mag info,
and not long before the darn thing was in the shelves anyway, my personal opinion is it can stay,
That said it's not my decision,

expect a decision soon,

I totally agree. While it looks snazzy and sounds awe-inspiring, I for one am reminded of the many promises made about MTW that still go unfulfilled today. However, I also believe that Activision people are intelligent enough to realize that if they truly hope to expand the success of the TW series, they will have to allow the CA progis to actually complete work before they ship the product. Besides, the game engine looks to be performing well and they still have a year or so to focus in on other things such as diplomacy and AI, we'll see how much ends up on the cutting room floor.

Many thx to ShadesWolf for posting this.
I'd have posted this over there, but can't due to the board-membership system (Which is a good clever and mature system. I applaud).
However, to answer the people in that thread, yes, this is copyright infringement and yes, we could sue you over it. In fact, it'll still be copyright infringement if you type in the article. I wrote the words, and future owns 'em.
I'd imagine Shades will be getting a cease and desist from someone at Future come Monday morning. I'd suggest he takes them down before then just to avoid the nastiness.
Sorry about the typo in the article Re: Release Date, btw. I'd imagine Ludicrously tight deadline and the Editor being distracted by the ludicrously good-looking screenshots.
Er... Hurrah for Rome Total War? That'll do.

Sorry to burst any bubbles, but a lot can happen in the year before this is released. It seems to me that they are trying to do too much. I have seen too many games start out ambitious, like Warcraft III and its SIX races, parred to FOUR, and I think we will have to "wait and see" as to how good R:TW will be. I would love it if it gets all done as is this great, although i would have to buy a new comp, but a lot can happen in a year.

ToranagaSama is almost speechless.
The first thought is to simply give thanks to The Creative Assembly for LISTENING They heard EVERYTHING, EVERYONE, whinned, moaned, groaned, yelled, screamed, whispered, begged, pleaded, implored and cajoled,
.......................EXCEPT...........................
Campaign Multiplay. Does anyone know of any Game Developer that is so obviously connected to their Fan Base??
I am a Total War fan, I will die a Total War, much like that Korean dude who died at his keyboard playing StarCraft.
Aaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Now let us gather ourselves, did any take note of the next to final paragraph The key word is "THEN" which directly implies "following" RTW, doesn't it?? I think so.
Quote[/b] ]The first thing we're going to deliver is the most spectacular battles ever seen in a game....
Quote[/b] ]Then we're going to give people the richest, most immersive strategy game they've ever played....
Quote[/b] ]THEN we're going to put these things together and hopefully give people a game WORLD that they can totally lose themselves in. We're taking all the experience of the last five years working on Total War and revolutionizing the genre of epic battles which we created with Shogun."
[Emphasis Added.]
Now is MDP, just a little hyped or is he indicating CA's plan? Seems like there is a definite "sequence" to development; or is all that to be included in ROME?
Pay particular attention to the last quote above. Does anyone else read that as a Campaign Multiplay World? At last???
