after a little discussion in the dungeon (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=5;t=7067) and a quick reply from the devs we found that the player limit is hardcoded in vikings and all previous versions of tw and cannot be changed to include larger amounts of players.
but dont lose hope yet, with enough intrest it may be possible to include larger amounts of player, 8v8, or more into rome:tw
so speak up
is this something that is important to mp and custom game players?
Yes it's important.
I would put an MP Campaign ahead of this, in development priority.
The two are closely linked. I'd like to see them both be implemented, so you could have many players in an MP Campaign. Imagine how much quicker and easier, we could get MP campaigns running.
On Gamespy I play other games; you can be sometimes be 50 (even 64) people to the same server. That's not exactly what I ask of RTW, but an increase from 4vs4, is clearly interesting.

Yes more then 4v4 would be nice. Maybe not often we could have 8v8 but why not make it higher than 4v4. Shouldnt be that hard to do? (He says and knows nothing about programing)

Um... why do you want more than 4v4? Suppose all of the players ally and collide in a huge battle? Shit, it seems pretty frickin impossible to put that many troops on the screen and still have a decent framerate. Suppose everyone has 2000 men. 16,000 men in the battle? Nah. I don't see how that's even possible, and more than that is just out of the question.

If your pc can't handle it, host a smaller game, or dont join bigger games. It's always nice to have possibilities ; besides RTW is supposed to run on older machines too http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wacko.gif so maybe you dont need all that much for a 5v5 http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif. Anyway for the people who have a newer pc, it'd be nice to have the option...I'd love to see a 10v10 ; maybe you could just limit the number of units per player to 5 or so...
I'ld like option for 10v10 and up too. Less units for each player to control, while there's a huge army, would allow for some interesting tactics.
I understood that syncing 4v4+ will become a problem for this type of game.
