View Full Version : Unit number in RTW

I personally would really like more than 32 units + subordinate AI generals.
In current MTW, the custom battle can manage 1 human player + 7 AI player, I think this should be feasible - espacially the battle map in RTW would be bigger. Let's say 2 AI subordinates for each main general in the campaign, then in case of a 3-way battle, the max units would be 16x3x3. (Curent unit limit is 16x8 for a 4x4 players). I've never seen a 4-way battle in MTW, I'm not a computer expert, but increase the limit for 16units more sound ok?
Probable not applicable to MP though.
Any other thoughts about this? I hope this is not too late for RTW.

Well, I think the units fielded are lesser than mtw. I think i read it in some review, something about 5000 soldiers. can some confirm?

last i heard, the engine could support 20,000 troops per battle, so i don't think it will be any less than MTW

just because it can desnt mean it [Iwill[/I]. They're trying to keep the specs low enough for someone who can run medeival to run it, remember I think 16-32 is more than enough. Plus, you should be able to assign sub-commanders, bt it should be optional. Also, it seems the individual unit sizes are a whole lot higher than before. Somebody counted a unit of 300 legionarres in one of the pics, so they will probably keep 16 units, just increase the men # limit and increase the men per unit.

Medieval "said" it could support 10,000 soldiers I never saw more than 1600 AT MOST on screen.

Thats because you haven't played on max size units.

On max size units, 100 strong becomes 200.
Therefore a given army is capable of being 200*16=3200 men strong (even though the strategic map gives the limit as 120*16=1920. If you have 16 units of 200 in the province, you still get them all in a battle)

Two armies = 6400

8 armies = 25600 (hmm gotta try that actually... even if they're only peasants)

I voted 32+ with subordinate generals http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

16 to 32 or even more units. I wouldn't like it if they kept the 16 unit limit.
If we want to fight like the Romans we need more units for complex formations http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

32 should be enough

no more than 32 and no ai subordinate generals or have them as optional.

but more than 16 would be good...with more units we'll be able to use more complicated formations.

I counted the number of units on one of the screens (roman horse riders overlooking the battle from top of the hill), anthe the "blue" opponent had 17. Plus, thats only visible part. So........

I voted 16-32 + subordinate generals, although I don't know how it would reflect on the gameplay.

I think its fine the way it is. But im a bit biast as i have a terrible computer so if there were to be more controllable units then id have to fork out a load of money for a new PC http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

32 is the max I would say.

I do not like those mass battles, 16-20 is enough I would say.

One more thing to think about:

I am having a 2800Mhz strong PC with still very good Hardware, but do you

* REALLY *

think that ROME: TW will play well on a machine that is good for Medieval? You know how often gaming companies say that their games run well on crap hardware and then they need some serious power in reality...

32 Units each side with that graphics might be TOO much for many systems.

I do find that the TW battles I tend to enjoy the most are the ones with relatively few units.
And I understand that substantially more than 16 units will become mighty unwieldy.

But if we can get something like 32 unit armies onto the field then it will really feel like a real big battle rather than a section of one as many of the bigger TW battles tend to.
Especially with subordinate generals hopefully managing the bulk of them http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Though subordinate generals would need to take orders & not do massively stupid things with big chunks of your army...

I do think about 25-30 units of legionairs with tortoise formation would look very decent and I hope we will have the opportunity.. But I dont trust those videos of RTW since theyre just videos and CA maybe didnt really care about how many units looked on the field, they may have just wanted to make it more impressive, as in 200 metalheads on a line would look much more striking than 100 and a full battlefield would impress the fans more than a not full one. My point is that the videos or screenies may be telling the truth about unit sizes, but they have the same chance, of not telling the truth and watering our mouth.

more units will make it hard to protect your provinces when seriously ounumbered, dont forget that. In MTW you might have 5 units and the enemy 25 but if you manage to route the first assault wave you can easilly deal with the dissorganised reinforcements and take advantage of the fact that the enemy's army might not be complete at a point ( no cavalary or no infantry units) , however if all 25 will go against you then its a very different story .

As it should be.

OF course it should be harder. Isnt it realisticness we are looking for? Think of a real battle. it shouldnt be very difficult to calculate that a 25 unit army should take a castle with 5 units garrisonned. That IS reality. Real life is tough and its not easy to take on a 25 unit army with a 5unit one, and so it will be real, and you will have to worry about your castle when that happens... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

rasoforos

its not that realistic if you think it. If the enemy is outnumbering you enough to be 99% certain for an attack then he will not send a ridiculous amount of troops against you , we will choose to let some of his invasion force to rest. As a result the 16 units is more realistic to my oppinion. It should become harder by making the AI choose better more cunning strategies and implement a better adaptability so it can counter assymetric defences succesfully. If the AI is better then those 16 v 3 defences will be more difficult to win and will show the skill of every player to surpass difficult situations and odds but it wont be impossible

in a recent teaser from gamestar.de, we saw (abnout 7 seconds) of rtw. in those seconds we got a look at the battle interface, the roman army conisted of 18 units with room for two more, so i'd say CA has upgraded it to 20 units in an army.

Larger units mean more men on the field and more carnage. Also allows for more complicated movements and the like...16-32 http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Good question...

Will the "unique," solo?, general unit be part of the display?

Only time, and alot of begging, will tell.

Armies can have up to 20 Units. On the battle field, you can personally control one army, meaning, you can personally control, 20 units. However, you can feild more armies, that computer generals can command. You can have up to 40 of your factions units on the feild, 20 by you, and another 20 by one or I guess more computer generals.

Its awesome how so many cool ideas like 'subordinate AI generals boosting your army' have been discussed on the forums & mostly written off by us as 'would be awesome, but they'll never do it' and then we find they actually have done it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
