View Full Version : A New RTW Movie

Sir Robin
05-31-2003, 05:35
Over at pc.ign.com they have a new RTW movie. Yes it is a new movie. Definately looks like they have some polishing to do but it is an actual battle.

I like the barbarian war dogs, big puppies. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

After CA does the tweaking this game will seriously rock.

Wow nice find. I don't think this is the video demonstrated at E3 though.
Just in case anyone can't find it-RTW Movie (http://mediaviewer.ign.com/ignMediaPage.jsp?channel_id=59&object_id=498739&adtag=network=ign&site=pchub&pagetype=medialist&page_title=Rome%3A+Total+War)

I haven't checked this yet,how is it?
are the battles like in MTW,with endless queues of idle individual units waiting at the back of the unit to engage?

I think this movie is what some of those E3 screenshots were taken from. Wait- no... Those Romans were colored red... these are colored blue.

From observing the collision between the barbarians and Romans, it almost looks as if men colliding with the back of a formation are pushing the whole mass of men forward. It is either that or the chargebonus rapidly killing front line men, which I would expect out of that barbarian unit we just saw.

Another thing I noticed was the barbarians almost auto-flanking the Roman units, even after the unit commander had engaged the Romans. After reading that the Spartan Hoplites attack by allowing the young hoplites to burst from an older front line, I could imagine that a disorganized sword unit such as that could have the special attacking ability to automatically exploit gaps in the line and surround enemies. However, on further viewing, it appears that the right half of the unit simply hit first, sending the left to engage the flank of the Roman unit. I cant tell if the swipe-thru move is happening here, but I would assume it will be fixed by the release date.

Why were the Romans firing flaming arrows? The flaming catapult projectiles might have an added demoralization effect, but this is probably just showing off the pyrotechnics of the new engine. Unless the Romans figured it was easier than building a bridge out of the barbarians.

The last time I saw a Rottweiler in a game was Quake I.

Notice the tall grass? That looks interesting. The units seem to be making trails through it.

I looked for some lighting effects, but could only see shadows. I expect lighting effects to appear in this game, it appears they will be after looking at the shot where the soldiers are marching through the archway entitled "Vespasiano Augusto". It's either at sunrise or sunset, and the light on the soldiers looks dimmer and at an angle. One of the things that I have been looking for in these games is a sky with moving clouds. The clouds did not appear to move in this movie. The TW series hasnt had these yet. For a while, I have thought that it would add a great touch to the game's realism to have the shadows of moving clouds darken the terrain as they slowly move along. I would be happy if the cloud shadows were stationary too.

Sounds great http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

One thing, the movie is only 12,7MB isn't that a little small? The first one was over 20MB IIRC.

87% done http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif (the movie)

wow I just saw it and it looked great, the combat is much more alive than in medieval with blocking and parrying http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

And the music is great as always in the totalwar games (well to me music is very important but people almost never talk about it)

The only things that I disliked (only a little) are the barbarians not blocking for the incoming arrows (ok they where walking, maby thats it) and the units are still walking in sync, but CA is working on that. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I agree. They were going for the Gladiator battle look. Most folks thought that was very cool without knowing or caring that it was bogus. Hopfully flaming arrows will be restricted to structures as they are in Medieval. I don't care what they put in movies or on the box as long as they get it right in the game.

The_Emperor
05-31-2003, 16:50
Hmmm, sounds great

Maybe you should get the choice before the battle to use flaming arrows or normal ones? I'm not sure what difference it would make in the gameplay, maybe flaming arrows should have slightly more power at the cost of some range?

All worth thinking about.

I didn't like how it almost had a cartoony look to it because of all the bright colors. IMO the colors should be a bit darker. Who keeps their yellow uniform spotless after months of campaigning anyway? Maybe they drag washing machines everywhere.

I doubt they will have a worn look to them with the game release.

If the engine is as improved as it appears to be there will be alot more troops on the field.

We may also have more multiple-faction battles with the improved diplomacy engine.

Though it may seem cartoonish its going to be harder to figure out who's who on the field as it is.

When you include street fighting, effectively controlling your troops is going to be alot harder.

The "spotless" parade uniform appearence may help to keep us from losing track of that cavalry unit when we need it the most.

Maybe the soldiers just bring along several drums of polish with them when they go on a campaign

Still if the colours are too bright for you, I'm sure you can turn down the colour and brightness on your Monitor http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

Oh, c'mon guys ...

THe movie is good, but those units ... arghh ...

Those blue legionares, the warriors with red and green tunics like they would be on parade ... Those are really cartoons. They should use more grey, black, brown, white, silver etc. Colours that you could see on a battlefield. The difference between armies (eg barbarians and romans) is big enough to diferentiate them. And for the roman factions, I think that the shields havind different colours would be enough, as they are pretty big.

How do barbarians charge the romans I mean do they break their lines or do they just do that Medieval thing when units with even irresistible charge bonuses just kill a few guys in the front rank and then they enter melee.
?

I would prefer realistic colors too. I don't like day glow clothing and armor. The standards would be enough to tell one side from another.

An option for reasonable colors would be great.

"There's still a lot to look at and see in Rome, but the brief 30 minute showing we received was more than enough to convince us that Creative Assembly has seriously outdone themselves with this one. The only thing we can find to whine about is that we're going to have to wait until next year to play the final, magnificent copy of this game. They aren't saying when next year we'll all be blissfully stupefied, but that's not going to stop us from recognizing that when it came to strategy, Rome ruled the show with an iron fist. Ok, now that I've watched it for the sixth time I'm ready to comment.

The animation for the horses in the opening walking cavalry scene is actually really well done. I also like how the legionaires swing their shields to center position in unison as the dogs approach. I really admire the appearance of the map, from the rock out-cropping just behind the Romans waiting in the tall grass to the field the barbarians are charging across and the trees and rocks in the distance. Sure there is some fine tuning to do, but I'm gonna be positive about the whole thing. My guess = coming February '04.

Sir Robin: Good point. I remember reading somewhere that soldiers in Mayan armies had brightly colored uniforms so commanders could tell them apart. Still, I believe the colors are overdone. Warfare wasn't a bunch of clowns on parade after all. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif
But I think what worried me is how it reminded me of Rise Of Nations (which is just another cartoony age rush judging from the trial version. *sigh* I was really looking foward to it. Oh well, I have VI )

Well, of course they want to appeal to as much public as they can... so they use bright and colory pictures and movies right now to get the attention from a lot of people?

Same thing as with the Viking on the front of the VI box; he has horns, they (Gil I think) promised us pretty soon the actual vikings in the game wouldn't have these horns. It's just to appeal to a big audience.

The_Emperor
06-01-2003, 22:56
Didn't they say that there were going to be other Roman factions in the game? They mentioned that you can compete against rivals within the empire for power and influence (as well as doing missions for the senate)

maybe the reason those Romans were wearing blue is because that is the colour of their "sub-faction" or warlord or something.

Anyway if you look, in the RTW Movie that came with VI, the Romans are in their typical Red outfits... So who knows what colours they will be wearing http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

if i had to take a good guess, id say u'd have ur own roman fation color untill you become so powerfull to overthrow the senate, then you adopt the Red uniforms because there would now only be one Roman warlord/leader.

this is just my take on this

Gregoshi
06-02-2003, 04:12
The colours are probably a playability issue to easily distinguish units. Imagine the venom CA would get if players had a hard time selecting their units - "I lost a major battle last night just because I couldn't find and select my units in the melee. Don't they TEST their games?" I think someone mentioned just leaving the banners brightly coloured and making the men realistically coloured. I don't always use the banners to select my units, especially if there are several banners mingled together. So I don't think that option will work.

Months to go yet before release and we are reduced to nit-picking about uniform colours and rust on the armour. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif At this pace, half of you will end up on the loonie farm before the game is ever released. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Relax and enjoy the movies. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif Though I swear I saw one of the Roman legionaires wearing a Rolex... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif

Apparently to download, you need to subscribe. You didn't yesterday, but you do now. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I downloaded it this morning... I used the standard windows " save target as" ...

Perhaps one of the CA guys could confirm that the movie is a view of the gameplay, taken from the game engine, rather than a standard promo movie??? ( before the Org members get the floor wet with all the drooling http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif )

It's clearly going to be a good game, but it looks likebig sacrifices may be made on realism.

Speculation speculation.

Yeah, who knows really ? But as for now it just looks as if they just spiced it up a bit in the color department. Might not be realistic, but it might add a lot to gameplay/playability maybe?

They only allow you a certain number of downloads or view per day before requiring a register for further use. Maybe that's the problem?

No, thats not it. They moved it to thier "member only" section- has the little icon next to it and tells me I need to register to download it even though I hadn't been to the site in a few days and that was the first thing I tried to do.

Guess a lot of us went over there to download the movie and they noticed. Now they try to squeeze some extra registered users out of it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Its been a while but if I recall its too big.

I would just register at legiontotalwar and download those three movies in their forums section. Registration is free but you might need to download the free software VLC to be able to watch them.

The battle movie there covers the same battle that was in this vid. Except it has more views and shows some gameplay features.
