An idea about RTW just struck me a few minutes ago, tell me what you think this guys, coz I really like the notion.

In ancient times, armies used dig not very deep holes around their castles, fill it with petrol or a liquid that burns out quickly, and concealed it with dry plants. When the enemy was approaching their walls, the archers on the walls would ignite their bows and fire them at those pitts, and the pitts would be set on fire, thus burning any kind of enemy in the heat, or ,f heavily armoured, it would make the metal so hot that the man inside would either die, have blisters over his body and would be scarred for the rest of their lives, or suffocate from the smoke. This strategy had saved thousands of castles in the history, and if our CA pals, who love to used the flickering flames we saw on their last movie want to get really hot, then here is their chance http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif So what do you think?

Sounds interesting http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif but I'm not sure if it would be in place for the Total War series... sounds more like something for Stronghold IMO...

But, who knows, they also introduced the burning oil

And burning pigs...and flaming arrows...and flaming torches...Looks like this is the 'twisted firestarter' of the TW series. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I don't think 'Slap My Bitch Up' is suitable for a TW game http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Oh CA...only add this if you make Fire Stations as an option on the tech tree, and have little red fire engines driving around the map with loin clothed fire men. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

I'll try to find some, but Im sure it was used... I think it would add a great touch to the game too.

i used it in Stronghold a couple of months ago. So far as i'm aware that, and Baghdad of course, is about as historical as it gets.

Actually, one cultural variation on the tech tree does feature historically correct 'firewatchers'. Just thought you'd like to know that. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

The only time I've seen it was when playing Stronghold. I never heard of being used on the battlefield. What happened if it rained? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Honestly, I did not find any records of this thing being used, but RTW is still a game, I think its a clever idea still. If i was a commander, i'd use it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

I don't care for the idea. The ancients had plenty of opportunities to do this sort of thing had it been practical. The expense and availability of suitable combustible material must have ruled out such action. I suspect that such oil as they had was for lamps and it may not have been very volatile. Why dump good lamp oil on an enemy when a rock will do? They were pretty ingenious at finding ways to kill one another so if this flaming defense thing wasn’t done there must have been good reason.

Hollywood likes fire because it’s spectacular and cinematic. That’s why Spartacus rolled flaming logs into the legions and why Maximus fired flaming arrows into Germans. In practical terms fire is a tactical pain in the ass.
