The Strat map looks great It's everything I hoped it to be, as were the inside of those cities. One thing that worries me though is that elephants appear to come in 'packs' of 20. Isn't this a bit unbalancing, if they're so good?

Hehehe, it's filmed of a monitor http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Doesn't matter though, as it still looks AMAZING
The city in the vid is very detailed, looks awesome And the elephants are awesome, and the troops look awesome as does the strategy map... and even Peter Molyneux looked awesome after that video

Don't worry, they don't say anything new. They simply describe the new features, such as 3D instead of 2D ( better animation) and the new strat map.

Anyways, some of scenes are great. Romans building the tortoise and using the ladders are awesome. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif
The only thing I didn't expect was the control panel.

I must say I am somewhat disappointed. Don't get me wrong, but how come every new TW game looks more like just another RTS. Shogun Total War was different, and I think I liked it because of the difference. 'course I'm going to buy RTW, but let's wait and see.

FesterShinetop
06-07-2003, 11:48
I don't agree, it doesn't at all look like an RTS. The scale in RTW is still as huge as it was in the previous installments No RTS can touch that. And I think there will also still be the unique combination of turnbased and real time in RTW. On the battle map it IS RTS of course, but not the way you mean, the Age of Empires/C&C kinda way.

hoom
06-07-2003, 16:13
What I find surprising is that RTSes don't seem to be changing to be more like Total War???

I have barely played any RTSes at all(maybe a couple of missions) since I got Shogun because they are all so lame in comparison.
All that clicking around & making armies out of single soldiers rather than cohesive units and (often badly) scripted campaigns of 'build a base from scratch each time then blast the enemy' rather than the TW cohesive strategic campaign that captures so much that was great about Risk...

Haven't seen the movie yet cos I've gotta lousy 56k modem http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

Very well put. I suspect that Activision is partly to blame. IMO they have not devoted enough time and money to marketing the Total War series. I discovered STW by accidently clicking on a "favorites" list on amazon.com (boy am I glad I did&#33http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif . Shogun was a well kept secret, Medieval seems to have shown increased staying power judging by the cohesiveness of this community and the continuing appearance of new members. I think that the buzz surrounding RTW at E3 and in the game sites and magazines will convince them once and for all that the Total War series is a money maker. Hopefully they will then devote the necessary resources to get the word out to all the strategy gamers that the Holy Grail has not only been found, but will arrive shortly. If RTW is a resounding success at the point of sale, then I believe we will begin to see the emulators crawling out from under their rocks. They will have a lot of catching up to do though. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

That is pretty amazing. But I think that the RTS games have a public of their own, and it's a pretty big public as well.
What amazes me is that there aren't any Total War lookalikes yet. Guess CA and Activision still have the monopoly on this sort of game. Some more observations about the teaser.

Anyone else notice the campaign map insert in the lower left? It is shown for the few seconds that the teaser shows the strategic portion.

Those definately look like provinces to me.

Also the campaign map shows some cities but not nearly the number people have been hoping for. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

Still it is a long way until release time so the campaign map will get alot of tweaking along the way. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

From the short amount shown it looks like the province count may actually be lower than MTW. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Still with, hopefully, multiple cities per province it will make things interesting. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

During the strategic part, what is the godawful huge fort thingy in the middle of italy?

A fort that the faction has constructed or maybe a camped army?

Big King Sanctaphrax
06-07-2003, 22:18
Maybe Rome? I would imagine that would be pretty big.

The citys are so awesome http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
The Strategy map looks good http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I hope those are Provinces because I wouldn't want to see provinces go away.
The Romans did provinces.

One thing, it looks to me like the battle maps will not be full scale based on that bit of the strategy map.
I was looking at those mountains & passes going 'that section looks like a good spot for a TW battle map'
But those sections especially passes would need to be relatively small as a battle map for them to be the choke points needed & suggested.
It would probably be about the same scale as M:TW uses mind you.
Look at the mountain maps, you get what look like huge mountains, but a person on the side is actually quite big.
So, I figure thats how R:TW will go.

I don't mind though http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

It seems that armies move in stacks (with maximum size), I wonder if they fight in stacks as well – if so there wouldn’t be need for re-enforcements in tactical map anymore.

I really hope that CA would publish some decent screenshots soon, in film there seems to be some kind of ghostly appearance near what is now days Venice http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

Maybe their has been some major surgery he hasn't had yet.

Perhaps he was thinking of swimming the Atlantic Ocean.

Or if he is married, the inlaws may be coming to visit and he is planning to go into a coma.

Any of these, as long as they at least take a few days, "might" be enough time for the teaser to download.

The highlighted units in the desert city part look about MTW size. Perhaps RTW also uses adjustable unit size settings?

I am so excited about this game.

That is how cities should have always looked in strategy games. Those elephants looked bad ass. I've always read tehy were ineffective as combatants except for an ability to affect morale on the opposing side.

I'm not sure they were ever used in those numbers. But they looked great.

Anybody see those neon green glowy troops? I was wondering if that was just to show a currently selected unit?

How many city sizes will they have? I assume a 5 or 10 stage progression of city representation based on development?

This kid at x-mas is going to go shake his gift again.

I also love the idea of abstract borders. I think border forts and I will become quite friendly.

Sir Robin
06-10-2003, 17:42
I think that is the RTW way of letting you know which unit is selected. With all the units, larger maps, and urban warfare, a bobbing flag may no longer be considered enough.

The elephants appear to be a bit of historical liscense to increase the fun and wow factor.

No answers for CA yet on what the actual numbers of cities will be.

I don't think those thngs on the minimap of the capaign map are provices because.

1. There are NO porovince divisions WHATSOEVER on the piece of map we see when surely there would be at least one.

2. Those "provinces" seem way too abstract and roundish to be provinces. I believe they are national borders.

Also, I kinda dont like the look of the new campaign map... Its too green and cartoony. Kind of looks like WC3... I always kinda likedthe old "war-room" feel of the map. I like it being 3d now, but it loks too vibrat and cartoon-ish...

Hey thanks a lot King. I just hope that jLan doesn't get flooded with emails containing 20 mb attachments because of all the PMs i sent out.

By the way, love your dueling smilies King.

The smilies are good aren't they? I'm sorry this is taking so long, but I'm having trouble attaching the file, for some reason.

GRAGH Just realised that my e-mail provider only allows attachments up to 3 meg, and this ones 20+. Does anyone know of an e-mail provider that doesn't have this kind of restriction?

DrHaphazard
07-02-2003, 15:46
I certainly don't, and then there's also the problem of jLan's email provider accepting files that big, although he probably already checked that out when he said he could use that address.

Perhaps ya'll can arrange to do it over AIM or ICQ or MSN or whatever, although i notice jLan doesnt seem to have any AIM or MSN thing advertised at the bottom of his posts.

'LO All is not lost. I have taken my life into my hands, registered a domain name, and am attempting to post the file myself. I've never done this before though, so fingers crossed...

Select 'save target as' to download. And HURRY I've exceeded my maximum webspace, so download it before they make me remove it.

NOOO It appears that, as I predicted, my host freaked out and removed the video as there was too little space. Back to square one...

GAH

Vanya is here to help the people...

1. To see AVIs, Vanya suggests you get Divx pack. Vanya thinks its at www.divx.com\divx or something. If this not work, you need to download some other codec to view your AVIs. AVIs are not a "standard" file format like MPEGs. You could download one of them AVI-to-MPEG converters if you were OK with getting or having to clear out spyware...

2. I have had no problems using the print screen to capture MediaPlayer screen caps. However, I seem to only be able to do it on Win2K and XP OSs. On Win98, it no workie. But, if you are serious about doing this, you can grab yourself a copy of SnagIt (Vanya thinks its free... last He recalls) and use it to capture screen areas to images. So, you pick an area on the screen, play video and every n seconds polled, you get a pic BADA-BING

---

And now, a piece of wisdom from the Horseman...

It is a proven fact that mankind developed its intellect over time when people began consuming the flesh of other animals. The increased protein content of their new diets fostered the growth of their brains, thus increasing their capacity to reason. Vegetarians, therefore, are unwittingly working towards unraveling all that Man has accomplished by pursuing less protein-rich diets overall. Now, keep in mind that this is not a 100% certainty at this time, as some beans are actually rich in protein. However, you'd have to eat a ton of flatulence-inducing beans to make up for the wealth of a nice, bloody steak. But, vegetarians aside, the search for greater protein-rich food sources is essential to the continued evolution of the species; and it will ensure than Man does not take a step "back". To this end, the need arises to find ways of stimulating agricultural growth for both feeding herds and peasants, as well as crops. The idea is: create better crops, and feed animals and people better in the process So, how can all you humans do this?

When you then consume said flora, it will be as if you ate your neigbor, only without having to buy a grill or a ginzu knife, and you will reap the benefits of his sloven, protein-and-fat-hogging nature

It's 24 Meg. I tried emailing it to you, but my email provider won't take attachments that big. Try downloading it from the link I gave. It seems to only work sometimes though, so keep trying.
