Alright guys, prepare to face a very difficult PBM campaign.

High Period Russians, Total Domination, Expert Difficulty... Golden Horde knockin at yer door (VI Version of MTW)

This campaign should be shorter than the others (given the shorter length of time we have to play with) and promises to be challenging

There is a list, and we will need some skillfull leadership for the Early years to fend of the Mongols

Put your email address down if you think your hard enough
You can send the savegame on to the next person in the list to keep the momentum going... It is requested that all savegames are also sent to ralphwolf@clara.co.uk

Right then Guys, my reign as Grand Prince Ysevolod III is now over... There isn't much I can write about my reign since I didn't have any major battles (the Rebels fled before me), and the rest of the time I was preparing for the arrival of the Golden Horde against the tidings of financial bankrupcy

The year is 1229, the arrival of the Horde is Imminent. Good Luck Monk I have made the preparations in Kiev and Moscovy, its up to you to repel the initial invasion of the Horde. (Our Turkish Allies should take the full brunt of the initial invasion in Khazar and the Crimea)

This will be one war to watch

Here is the list as of tonight 20 August 2003.

Yeah I know strange isn't it?

At any Rate the Turks crossed into the Crimea and into Khazar, the Sultan sent an Emissary and begged for an Alliance... Given that my King's death was going to happen the next year I accepted.

It is only a temporary alliance since we cannot afford to be at peace too long if we want to rule Europe

I am Grand Prince Yuri II, i took the throne in the year 1229, howver i had no time to sit around and plan, for in 1230 the Mongols arrived bringing with them 10,000 blood thirsty paganistic warriors who all sought to tak our own lands and make them theirs.

My god... said the Prince upon hearing of the numberless mongols. Their strength alon is enough to whippe us all from the face of the earth RR NO I Am The grand prince of all Russia And By god as My witness, i Shaall WIN THIS WAR

His cry echoed through the halls of the palace untill all fell silent and not even the sound of peasents could be heard. Yuri Sent forth messengers warning of the coming storm, keiv was the first to be hit by the Mongolian war marchine.

Keiv 1232

Battle of keiv (http://www.bonedaddy.net//monk643/keiv01.TGA)

It was 10:00 A.m and the morning dew had just lifted from the ground when they adnaced onto the grounds near keiv. Prince Mikhail along with a host of 960 troops from the Tzar of Russia were sent to the river's two main bridge to guard them against attack. When they finally apeared on the field of battle, the Mongols brought with them 3152. They were led by Batublai, a feirce combatant and a general with no mercy. Although clearly outnumbered by 3 to 1, Mikhail did not run from his enemies. he ordered that both Bridges be defended, the Left bridge was gaurded by the heavy infantry and most archers, while the Right bridge was guarded by the cavalry force that had assembled there.

The Mongols soon advaced on the Left, leaving the Right unnoticed the marched. and upon crossing the Bridge they came under heavy fire from Boyars and Arbalasters trained by the former King Ysevolod III. the general led his men into the Halbreiders and the battle began. the axes and weapons of the spearmen and the Swordsman were thrown at their mongol agressers who attempted to break through the well organized lines. The screams of the Men and horses were legendary on that day, and the force who was losing ground was not the russians, but the Mongols.

After the initial wave was repulsed In came the second, they collided with the lines of Russia with the velocity like that of Thunder, and yet it was not enough to break the Lines of Halbreiders and Armoured spearmen. And yet even as the Mongol heavy cavalry charged in, they only met death on those river banks. Arrow after arrow was loosed and sword and spear alike broke as the fighting became more intense, but in a desprete plan Mikail ordered that the forces of the Right bridge ride forth and surround the Mongol force.

They set out once the messenger arrived from the general and made it to the other side as the battle to the north was becoming ever more desprete. with The speed carried only by lightning they rode across the plains and smashed into the mongols left side, sending them into a complete rout. However as the russian forces began to rush after them..they found tthat they themselves had been caught in a trap. out of the Forests sprung MHC and horse arhcer that had lay hidden for so long, The Russians turned and Mikhail ordered that every man stand his ground.

Now fighting encircled and surrounded those within Russia's army began to fall to the sword. However even while surrounded, Mikail was amazed in how not one man refused to leave the fight. the Mongol's general then fell amidts the battlefield and again the Mongols went into rout, however this time it was not a trick as they left the field. Yet the battle did not end there, as more and more soldiers poured onto the field of battle, Mikhail ordered that all should withdraw and met back at the castle. And so showing the dicipline of a real army, What was left of the russian force fell back.

But Mikhail didnt, he and 200 armourd spearmen, along with 20 Halbrieders stayed behind to ensure that the rest would make it across. Those men were brave indeed and they fought with all their heart, When the newe mongol wave charged the spearmen locked their sheilds together and held the spears forward. the mongols had no time to stop their attack and so went right into a wall of glimering spear tips. many hundreds fell in the final assualt and on the Russians fought, however when facing another charge from the MHC, Mikhail ordered that all men withdraw.

He and his men made it to the other side of the River and back to the castle. He and that force saved many lives in making that stand, Mikhail gained great valor (10), and even though they were defeated, The stand inspired all of Russia to fight on.

After The battle of keiv, the Russian army retreated back into the fortress and took refuge there. Mikhail, now with only an a sortmant of 250 men did not expect he would last long under a full scall attack. and One came in 1233. it was a long and drawn out battle as Mikhail refused to give up his positions in keiv, still in hope a relief force would come to his aid.

The results of the siege:

Russian losses: 127
Mongol losses: 683

Lithuania 1233

Battle of Lithuania (http://www.bonedaddy.net//monk643/Lith01.TGA)

In Lithuania, Price Yaroslav wasnt expecting an attack by The Mongols this soon, in fact he hadnt even rallied his men from Novgorod. this was a terrible mistake as the Mongols marched on Lithuania in 1233 taking the defenders by surprise. The small Russian force of 400, comprising of peasents and poorly trained militia stood before the 674 Mongolian warriors, trained and thirsty for battle. Led by Monduck They entered the province with the speed of many thousand horses, and as they approached the small russian levie, they halted near a forest. Again the forces of Russia outnumbered...yet showing no fear. Instede the Russian force Cried out in rejoice, they shouted curses out across the field and held their weapons high.

The Mongols let this go on for some time before they became fed up, and launched an all out attack on the lines of Russia. They rode across the open field with tremendous speed, to look upon them, they apeared as demons, speeding on with their weapons infront ready for battle.

The Prince Yaroslav ordered those who could to open fire on them, the spearmen went forth and began the battle. The fight was short as the mounted Units of the Mongols made quick work or the quickly trained and inexperianced troops that made up the Lithuanian army.

With no help coming Yaroslav paniced and began to run away from the Mongol's advance, without their leader to guid them, the rest of the Russian force fled. they ran all the way back to their castle.

Next Up; Mongol Khan Battles Yuri II in Moscovy

Monk

Upon hearing of His general's defeat in Lithuania, Yuri II began to become ever increasingly nervous as he knew he would face a Mongol army before long. As a skilled tactician he wasn't too worried about facing them in open battle, and using the last battles as a reference he could easily turn the tables on his aggressors. Yet his faith was not in his own skill.

Damn it said the Grand Prince walking and pacing throughout the palace in Moscovy.

What shall i do?

My lord said a man from the Prince's Bodyguard.

What is it? asked Yuri.

The Khan of the Mongols...He is massing his troops They will arive here within the week.

So...He wishes to take power from us with one last battle. So be it Gather the forces, We shall met this threat on the plains of our home

At once and the man sprang from the ground and ran from the great hall.

Moscovy 1234

King against King (http://www.bonedaddy.net//monk643/kingvsking.TGA)

The sky was a pale blue as the Grand Prince of Russia rode out onto the field. As he looked at his 1041 troops he smiled, but then he looked upon the Mongols and saw their Numbers were greater at 1976. the King did not run, he put together his plan, since in the past the Mongoles always rushed one single bridge he deployed all his troops there hoping to stop them before they crossed over.

His troops deployed in a ring around the right bridge, spearmen in front, Halbrieders behind, and the archers and cavalry behind them and on the left and right flanks. it was a daring move, and even khan Ogabai realized it was a formidable position. None the less he would not show the Russians he was a coward and pushed his men forward. As the Mongols advanced Yuri rode up and down the lines of his men, he shouted as he came to a stop The future of Russia, along with all of Europe is now in our hands We shall show the world the might of Mother Russia, Let none survive our wrath

The Mongols charged forth and met the men of Russia in combat, the first wave of their force was made entirely of the Dreaded Heavy cavalry of Mongolia, the Arbs let their bolts fly and the Boyars along with their horse archer brothers loosed their arrows into the Lines of the Golden Horde. The first wave pounded the Russian position, but as the Halbrieders moved into battle the tides turned. Soon the wave of attack was sent sailing back into the wind.

However the Battle was not done, the Second wave moved into position, again Yuri shouted to his men as he held his bow ready. Let now all see us, young and old, rich and poor, meek and strong, and let them know that God is with us this Day The Mongols charged across the river and into the Russians lines once again. The carnage was horrifying, yet the armored spearmen stood fast on their spot not giving up a step. In from the right rode the Steppe Heavy Calvary and the odds were again even. The Mongols began to falter and again they dropped their banners and fled back across the bridge.

The Third wave Moved into its position, made of both MHC, SHC (Steppe heavy cavalry), and Mongol Horse archers, and at their head was Ogabai. He swung his spear and thrust forward, and with it ran out many hundreds of Mongol foot soldiers. As they men came over the bridge Yuri let out another shout They are attempting to tire us out, Fight on my troops, And know that my fate is yours as the third wave attacked the Russians Grand Prince Yuri rushed into combat and was first to bring his sword down upon them. In his face was the look of death and about him his soldiers roared with excitement and charged forth. The Third wave was broken and scattered like grains of sand.

Ogabai looked at Yuri from across the Bridge and felt a hatred burn upo inside him. He threw all sense he had left into the wind and charged his unit forth his unit. As yuri regrouped his men he shouted Now Now Ride forth and he and his entire remnant of his army leapt off their positions and into the Mongols. Yuri was said to be at his army's lead into the fight against the Khan, for in the midst of the chaos the two met.

As the battle raged around them the found themselves near one another, Yuri took his bow and fired two arrows and Ogabai. But the Khan was very skilful and deflected them easily, and while rushing his horse forward Yuri Drew his sword and charged the Khan. He flung his sword into the air and drove it down, the Mongol Khan Blocked his strike and answered with a stab of his own. Yuri was cut in his chest but he would be ok, he again swung his sword high, but as he did he drew it back down and slashed through the Khan's stomach. Ogabai fell from his horse dead, and as he did so all the Mongols lost heart and fled. as his Soldiers rush across the Bridge pursuing the Golden Horde, Yuri dismounted and looked upon the piles of dead, both on his side and the Mongols. The price had been high, but the GH had been defeated after only four years of war.

Victory In Moscovy (http://www.bonedaddy.net//monk643/victory1.TGA)

The Gh defeated (http://www.bonedaddy.net//monk643/defenders.TGA)

An for the next years and a half the entire country of Russia was in a state of Rejoice, the Kingdoms and Empires of the World sent messengers to Yuri calling Him The Defeater of the Horde. Yuri retired to his home in Novgorod and rested for the next few years. he had done what his father had wished to do, Send the Horde back to the steppes from which they came.

And so Yuri the II shall forever be remembered as the Man who stopped the Mongols, something that the turks had failed to do.

Anyway, The last part of the reign will be done tomorrow and so will its write up along with screens.

With the GH's defeat we can now concentrate on becoming a trader nation, although there looms a threat like the shadow of Morder upon Gondor. There now sit 7,000 mongol warriors in khazar, should their Khan ever return he will have a great number of soldiers to command. Their threat is not yet been put out, but i am confident that i, or one of my heirs, will be able to pacify the provice before that happens.

My Friends, it is my griev to report to you... that the mongols re-emerged in 1249. I am so sorry but not even i was able to push them back, for they now have more numbers than before. We had just regained Lithuania...when the Rebel Mongols began rempaging once more. even without their Khan they were fierce fighters.

They took keiv from us once again and pushed us out of our southern provinces..i was not prepared for sush a fight. their Speed was unmatchable, i could not stop them.

We hold only Lith, Novgorod, and the province under Nov. Muscovy fell in 1253, and Yuri the II fell there as well.

I am sorry, but i could not stop them http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif.

I guess im gonna have my hands full with them right?

I think i may have a strategy of destroying them - fight pitched battles to reduce enemy numbers and thus destroy their army forever (thats what i did in my Byz campaign). I guess it all depends on the situation at hand. Wow am i ever gonna have my hands full lol.

Nonetheless Monk, you did a commendable job as you have managed to crush their original onslaught - reappearances are tough to control. I did wonder if the idea of a High Period Russian Campaign would be a bit too ambitious...

I think we may be forced into a war of attrition with the Mongols to wear them down. At the very least lets hope that the Mongols swing south to attack The Byzantines & the Turks.

Too bad about Muscovy, that was a great citadel with good troop training facilities...

Muscovy 1253

The rain fell gently from the sky as the on coming storm rolled in from the east. THe mongols had reapeared 4 years ago and had began ravaging all who opposed them, even some of their former armies who didnt join up. Yuri gathered what little he had, only 740 against the 1548 Mongols that had entered the province.

My Prince, said one of the men infront of the grand Prince as he looked down at his bow.

My prince what shall we do? they outnumber us

I have never ran from a Mongol in my life, and even though i am getting old i will not start now They may take this land from us...but it will be oiver our dead bodies, we shall not go silently

The Mongols advancing closer and closer the Russian lines began to waver, when the charge from the Heavy cavalry broke out the spearmen rushed ahead and blocked them, sending many warriors into the ground. Loose the bows cried the Prince and he readied his bow and fired off a few shots. he noticed the Khan of the Mongols was leading a flanking force on the left, taking what cav he had the prince rode out to meet him. as the two charged toward one another, the rain poured out from the sky and the Thunder cracked high above. the Russian prince and his cavalry was to much for the Khan as his men fell by the tens and soon routed.

As the Rus cavalry followed the Khan and the Grand prince met once again in battle, they fought for the entire length of the rest of the battle with neither gaining the upper hand over the other. They both in high valor refused to run, untill as his lines began to break, the Prince drew his attention away from his combatant, and was struck in the chest by an arrow. as he sat in his saddle dieing the prince lifted his head and saw the khan drawing his sword. but there was no need, for yuri died before the khan hit him again.

The Men of russia routed that day after seeing their Prince dead in the sattle. To Novgorod they ran, for their new Prince was to be crowned, with hopes he would push back the newly formed horde.

edit: well i did my best, but i couldnt do it, they were just to many in number, had i had a few more years to prepare maybe i could have won in Muscovy, but alas. let us hope the Next King will fair better

Good luck Revenant69 http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Although i couldn't stop the Mongols, there may be a chance that you can. Novgorod is still a good troop producing province and it has a good stronghold, However the lack of good commanders is evident (Sadly Prince Mikhail died defending keiv against a Mongol counter attack) also many of our Valiant Princes that held their lands to the death were our best commanders. the One in Lithuania is unfortunatly, the only sound Millitary mind that Russia has.

Have faith though, If we could stop the Mongols once, then by god we can do it again

It is the year of our Lord 1254. Thus begins the reign of Grand Prince Sviatopolk III.

The kingdom that he inherited from his father Yuri II was a troubled one: Mongols were everywhere. The dogs even dared to siege Moscow Castle. Sviatopolk has summoned his royal council, in order to decide on the course of action. After little deliberation everyone agreed unanimously on what to do next. The oath of late Yuri II must be upheld, no land must be given to the locust that infest them and who call themselves Mongols.

It was decided that the siege in Muscovy must be lifted at once. General Chort Alexeev was given this task and all the troops in Smolensk to do it. Secondly, it was decided at the royal council that Chernigov must be taken at all costs for thus it would limit the ammount of border lands that was necessary to defend. Lord Nezhkov was given that task for he can reach it in time and he is our most able commander. It was a gamble, every man in that room knew it - but there was no other way out, Moscow castle would fall the next year if something was not done now.

Sviatopolk also send all his sisters as emmisaries to the Golden horde to spy on their location and armies. Spies from Muscovy report that the Mongol Khan Chagatai I behaves like a little girl and often flees from field.
This would help us relieve Moscow without much trouble Sviatopolk thought to himself as he paid the spy his money for the information.
Council is adjourned he said as he motioned for his servant Vasilii.
Vasilii bring me another jug of that mead and some wine too, I shall need it before i do battle tomorrow.

All garrisons in Lithuania and Novgorod were stripped and all men sent to the front (except a little army returning to Novgorod after being ransomed).

Fate. it seems, was against Sviatopolk. For Great Khan Chagatai himself led a small but powerful force into Novgorod, our last greatest city. However, they were ambushed by the band of ransomed man that were on their way to Novgorod as well. When our brave men lept up from the trees the Khan fled before we could put any of his men to the sword.

Nezhkov reported that Chernigov was taken without a fight as the horde retreated.
The day that our Grand Prince Sviatopolk was supposed to lead a relief force into Moscow he was found unconcious having drunk himself silly. It was presumed that he fell down the stairs and passed out. So Prince Andrei and general Chort Alexeev rode without the king to relieve Moscow from the pagans.

They rode up and could see the walls of Moscow castle and smell the stench of mongol cooking fires......

PS battle of Moscow will be posted when i can link the pics up.

That was my intention when I started it... I wanted a story that had a few more twists in it that would make for excellent reading, and have a generally high challenge and playability factor.

Something a bit different.

The Battle for Moscow
http://www.ralphwolf.clara.net/Rev/Muscovy1.JPG

Prince Andrei and General Alexeev rode up to the forest where the Mongols arrayed their army. Out of the corner of his eye Andrei could see mongol cavalry outside the forest ready to flank our army.
Ahh...is it raining? asked Andrei.
Yes my prince answered Alexeev. Perfect moment to attack them if you ask me. Their archers will be of little use - and they do have ALOT of them, he retored.
Then so be it, my friend, so be it.... Andrei said as his mind already resigned to accept defeat.
Horns sounded and the Russian warriors advanced into the forest to meet the mongol archers and warriors there.
Alexeev yelled out to all his cavalry to attempt a flanking movement to nail that nasty mongol cavalry from behind. They would have to go around a litlle lake to do it.

More horns sounded, this time not russian ones. The battle was joined. Fighting in the forest ebbed and flowed with the russian spearmen slowly gaining abit of an advantage. Ranged troops were ordered to slowly advance but not to fire as long as it's still raining. Soon it would not matter.

Generals cavalry together with other small cavalry detachments and the prince's bodyguard have engaged mongol cavalry outside the forest. Enemy Heavy cavalry stayed out of sight. That unnerved Alexeev and he decided to charged them and the small detachment of enemy archers parked on the hill. The General fought bravely and so did his entire unit, even when surrounded they did not show a sign of fear of death. They fought to the last man, Alexeev was the last to die and his unit was no more. The mongols cut off his head and started yelling and chanting like madmen.

Soon most of our troops saw this and started to flee the field as their hope of victory was crushed. Even Prince Andrei turned hist tail and ran. But as he kept running farther from the field (his soldiers will never forgive him this act of despair) his mind was spinning with guilt and remorse and love for his country. Suddenly he span his horse around and began rallying his men. It took along time, but soon the scattered and battered remains of russian forces began to come to their senses. but the mongols pressed on and more troops began to flee. After hours of rallying his men, Andrei finally got them all under control. Situation was grim, more mongol light cavalry and some peasantry entered the field. The devastating firethrowers have joined Kubuk's ranks as well.

Andrei ordered his troops to march into the forest. Men responded with reluctance for they still reeled from the shock of seeing their general die. Remnants of our light cavalry and horse archers was sent to ride down the ever dangerous firethrowers, which they did with mixed success.

Kubuk decided not to relinquish his attack on the battered russian troops, he sent the rest of his light cavalry, some 80 horse, to attack us in the forest. It was his first and biggest mistake of the battle. Our spearmen and halberdiers crushed them and the flame of hope was rekindled.

Andrei looked at his men and at Kubuk's entourage sitting on the hill and he suddenly had a plan.......

35 arbalesters advanced towards the hill covered by 30 or so spearmen in case they were charged by the remnants of Kubuk's infantry. Andrei himself went around the hill and tried to flank Kubuk's remaining 6 mongol heavy cavalry. The arbalesters fired a volley, 2nd volley, 3rd volley. Suddenly all the mongols panicked for a lucky bolt hit Kubuk in his eye killing him instantly. Andrei charged bravely at the remnants of the pagan infantry and at the sight of his horse and face filled with revenge and bloodthirst the enemy fled.

Victory, sweet bloody victory. Prince Andrei dismounted, fell to his knees and began uttering a prayer to our all mighty Saviour. After that he ordered to find a man who killed Kubuk and immediately promote him and make him a Boyar.

It was a Pyrrhic victory. Nevertheless, Moscow belonged to the russians again.

http://www.ralphwolf.clara.net/Rev/Muscovy1end.JPG
Having retaken Muscovy, Great Mongol Khan Chagatai was trapped between Novgorod and Moscow, soon discovered, captured and promptly executed. The news have reached Sviatopolk and he was happy as a drunken pig (he was drunk at the time, well he was drunk all the time).
Finally, the moshmogolians won't pose any threat... *burp* *mumble mumble* said Sviatopolk and collapsed snoring on his throne.

PS I listened to Gladiator soundtrack when i fought this battle, without it i may have lost my resolve to keep on fighting. It was hairraising, nailbiting, excruciating and finally i emerged victorious http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Just look at how many troops i had left at the end.

It is a year of our Lord 1255.

The mongols were crushed at Moscow and their khan Chagatai captured and executed. However, the evil was not yet cleansed from our fair country. Chagatai's son Batu has taken command of the Golden Horde and vowed revenge for his father's death. The horde was still numberless and the relief of Moscow has come at a terrible price for our army.

Khan Batu has sent his able general Temublai to reconquer Moscow for the Horde. At the same time, Batu ordered an attack on the German crusader army stationed in Kiev. Crusaders repelled the Horde but suffered terrible casualties.

Defense of Moscow
http://www.ralphwolf.clara.net/Rev/muscovy2.JPG
Sviatopolk and his army were standing near a small forest when the scouts reported the sighting of the mongols. And so into the forest they all went and set up a defensive perimeter. It is actually amazing that Sviatopolk was able to sit in his saddle and ride his horse as he had plenty to drink that morning. He even brought his favourite servant Vasilii with him to the battle so that Vasilii could keep serving him mead and other firewaters.

As the army stood in the forest watching the mongols in the distance, a miracle occured - out of the clear sky suddenly big dark clouds gathered and minutes later it was raining. For ordinary men dark clouds meant dark omens, but Sviatopolk saw use in this.
God is on our side today for the clouds came out of nowhere and rain befell - it is a sign that we shall be victorious today. Men This will make mongol arrows useless. Much jubilation was heard among the ranks.

His commanders had sense to order our archers and arbalesters to unstring their bows and not to fire until the clouds cleared.

Soon the Horde approached. All men stood still as rain of water and rain of arrows fell unto the forest. For hours it was like that, men were begining to grow desperate as the rain of arrows seemed endless. At one point mongols decided to bravely charge with their infantry and some cavalry into the forest and break through our line. As in the previous year, spearmen and halberdiers repulsed that foolish attack causing heavy casualties to the pagans. The rain of arrows continued, a lot of our men fell to them. But the sky soon cleared and our archers and arbalesters returned fire causing great number of deaths to the enemy. Their general even began to flee but regained his senses shortly afterwards. The archery duel continued and about an hour later we spotted mongol troops moving away all of a sudden.

Are they leaving or is it a trap? asked Prince Andrei.
Trap or no trap we must pursue them replied Sviatopolk hastily. Horns sounded and all of our glorious cavalry sprang from the forest at the enemy. Mongols were withdrawing from the field in an organized fashion, until their ranks were hit by our cavalry. It caused a rout. Mongol cavalry managed to escape but all their infantry was captured (later executed) or killed. It was a glorious victory.

http://www.ralphwolf.clara.net/Rev/muscovy2end.JPG
2 years of peace shall follow this battle and the peaceful times were used for training of new troops.

After the battle a messenger approached Grand Prince Sviatopolk and said that it was learned that a distant Almohad Caliphate was no more.

Events of the Year 1256
Our beloved Grand Prince Sviatopolk has decided to wed a nobleman's daughter as the need of an heir was urgent.
Spies report that once again the Horde attacked the German crusaders in Kiev, this time Batu himself led an assault. The horde was repulsed once more. However, something must be done about this as the number of German crusaders dvindles, if the Horde takes Kiev it will open the entire Nothwest of our undefended Kingdom to these pagans and all of Russia will surely fall in a matter of years.

Sviatopolk watches carefully our allies the Poles and Danes as they were kind enough to honour the signed treaty and did not attack our undefended lands of Lithuania, Smolensk and Novgorod.
Next year saw no major developments, and more conscripts were ordered.

Events of the Year 1258
It was widely whispered that Hungarians have the largest armies. It is good that they are our allies then, perhaps they will aid in our stuiggles against the Horde at a later point.
Scouts report of another attack by Batu himself on the beleaguered Crusaders in Kiev. Batu is succesful at taking the province but a small detachment of german survivors flees to the fort. Perhaps it is time to bring this war to the enemy's steppes. Germans have weakened the Horde enough for us to try taking some of our land back and we couldn't thank them (the Germans) enough.

Thus it was decreed at the royal council that Lord Nezhkov attack Pereyaslavl with his Chernigov army. Grand Prince Sviatopolk himself is about to lead an expedition into Ryazan with the army from Moscow.

Battle for Pereyaslavl
http://www.ralphwolf.clara.net/Rev/pereyaslavl.JPG

Lord Nezhkov is one brave men and inspires his troops (LOOK at his valour), his men love him for it. His fame must have preceeded him for mongols did not put up much of a fight.
As our army was approaching the mongol position, the scoundrels started to withdraw at the mere sight of our valiant general. Realizing that pagan army is going to escape, Nezhkov ordered an all-out attack. The purpose of the attack on Pereyaslavl was to destroy the enemy numbers and thus win the war of attrition. However, these dogs run fast, and even faster when they flee the field of battle. Once again their cavalry escaped us, but most of their infantry ended up trampled under the heels of our horses. It was an easy victory but the goal of destroying this Mongol army completely was not accomplished.

http://www.ralphwolf.clara.net/Rev/pereyaslavlEnd.JPG

Battle for Ryazan
http://www.ralphwolf.clara.net/Rev/ryazan.JPG
Feeling confident after the victory at Moscow Sviatopolk decided to try his luck at attacking the Horde. His retainers had two men follow him at al times on both left and right of prince's horse (if he fell to either side they would hold him up).

Mongols were arrayed outside the forest this time. did they learn their lesson? Mongol ballista kept firing and unnerving our trrops, so Sviatopolk ordered an organized Full formation advance. He also ordered his Druzhyna cavalry to flank enemy cavalry archers and thus prevent them from escaping. However not knowing the full potential of Druzhyna cavalry Sviatopolk has commited them to a useless battle and they have suffered insane casualties.

Our advance scared the enemy to hide in the forest at which point Vasillii (who will later become Sviatopolk's biographer) suggested that our Halberdiers advance into teh forest and eliminate Mongol cavalry and infantry hiding there.

So it was done and for the third time Halberdiers helped to seal the ever important victory. Enemy general decided to run and soon the rest of his army followed. This time we have managed to destroy a fair ammount of their cavalry.
http://www.ralphwolf.clara.net/Rev/ryazanEnd.JPG

After the battle at Ryazan a messenger arrive to Sviatopolk telling him that his wife has given birth to a boy. A most joyous occasion http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif . It is this day that Sviatopolk has named his first son Yuri in the memory of his late father Yuri II who fought bravely against the onslaught of the Horde.

Wow guys so far (after playing for 5 years) i have these things to say about this campaign.

1 I LOVE IT IMMENSELY http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif It is sooooo hard yet soooo fun to play. Emperor you deserve MAJOR congrats on picking a fun campaign to play.

2 If it wasnt for Monk ransoming the army that was returning to Novgorod, Novgorod would have fallen and so would all of Russia (Novgorod was our last greatest troop producing city).

3 Halberdiers and Armored Spearmen helped win every major victory (they turned the tide of battle every time). Too bad my experiment with Druzhyna has failed (i dont know how to use them yet http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif )

4 If it wasn't for our German allies wearing down the Horde in Kiev - the mongol numbers would have been too great and Russia would have fallen in a matter of years. Therefore, i beg my successors to show compassion to our allies the Germans. They deserve a lot of credit for their staunch defense of Kiev.

5 Thank God our Danish and Polish allies have honoured their treaty and not attacked us. There was NOTHING defending Lithuania, Smolensk and Novgorod (after Chagatai was captured).

6 Sorry for the long write-ups. I am still not done with the campaign (well i didnt play Friday cuz i was helping my friend move). The Horde is far from destroyed. Currently they occupy Kiev (sieging the Germans), Crimea, Khazar and Volga-Bulgaria. Our garrison in Moscow should withstand an attack from Volga-Bulgaria if it comes. Kiev must be relieved if we want to keep our undefended lands in Northwest safe. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

7 As i mentioned, my main goal as Grand Prince Sviatopolk III is to destroy and crush and grind the Horde into oblivion and restore the former glory of Kievan Rus. It still looks grim, but at least i managed to take the fight to the enemy.

8 Sviatopolk gained a rank and became a skilled attacker after that attack in Ryazan . So he is not so useless after all - even though he is always drunk but i just love that guy http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

9 I took a MAJOR gamble - we all know it. But i could not have defeated the Horde in Moscow if i didnt do it. I only have 2 active armies to wage war with + the Moscow garrison. Let us pray that my gamble pays off in the long run.

10 Last but not least i'd like to thank Ridley Scott for the great inspirational movie (and soundtrack) Gladiator. Without it I wouldnt have had the balls to continue fighting in Moscow http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Once again forgive me for long write ups. I shall play all day Saturday and hopefully wrap the campaign up that day.
Wish me GREAT luck

The new Grand Prince is Yuri III - he is ok although a bit strange http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Yuri will inherit a small but prosperous Empire. A lot of strange things have happened during this game, well one of them not so strange.
The Horde was crushed and ground into oblivion. Until they reappeared in 1277. They appeared in Armenia (behind our Hungarian allies) so they are not a direct threat to us. In fact they are our allies. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Hungarians were the most powerful and the richest and the most advanced country for the entire reign of Sviatopolk III, until one year Hungarian king died without an heir. lol When that happened I tried to bribe 3 armies in now rebel Constantinople http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

There are alot of opportunities in terms of conquests. Oh by the way we are at peace with every faction (xcept rebels).

So the situation is very stable. Our armies are not huge thou, sorry. I concentrated on building infrastucture.

Sounds like you certainly had one of the most unusual reigns in just about any PBM Campaign I have seen... The Horde were crushed twice and now they are our allied with us?? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif (I guess after being defeated twice by the Russians, they finally learned their lesson, don't mess with the Russians)

Speaking of the Mongol Horde, I am now facing them in the Holy Roman Empire Campaign... Armenia, Khazar and that funny province north of Khazar (volga something or other, i forget the name) have Erupted with Mongol warriors I almost feel sorry for the Byzantines

Yeah best if you email the saved game on, my attention has been on my reign in the Holy Roman Empire Campaign this weekend... I suspect I will be finished with that soon enough.

Thanks Monk. I think Emperor was correct - Mongols learned to stay away from our lands and not to mess with the Russians. They are persistent little buggers thou - they keep reappearing.

My write ups will be done shortly. There isnt much left. After the defeat of the Horde i just build infrastructure.

The game is very very strange. You will know what i mean when i upload the map lol. For example, Danes took Livonia but cant control it as there is a rebellion every other year. So the Livonian rebels have been singlehandedly reducing strength of Danish military.

Oh yeah the Pope reappeared and now controls all of what today is Italy. Sicilians are stuck on Malta.

Half of Europe is a Rebel hotbed - after the demise of Hungarians. It is very interesting stuff.

Anyhow, i better email all that stuff off. Kristaps the campaign will be on your way shortly.

Events of the year of our Lord 1259

Our border forts have reported a massive attack by the Danish king on the Livonian rebels. I must say that rebels, even though they were outclassed, put up quite a fight. We should keep an eye out on the events in Livonia.

This same year our magnificent Lord Nezhkov leads a relief force into Kiev. Cowardly Mongol Khan and his army retreat into Crimea. Our German allies send their warmest gratitude for the helping hand that we gave them in Kiev. Now if we could only take Khazar we would trap the Khan in Crimea.

Events of the year of our Lord 1260

Lord Nezhkov was ordered to attack Khazar. Same year Grand Prince Sviatopolk III crossed into Volga-Bulgaria. Mongols fled before our armies and retreated to their hastily constructed forts. However a significant portion of their army was encircled and eliminated.
http://www.ralphwolf.clara.net/Rev/trapped.JPG

Since our fair country is lacking the materiel and expertise to build siege engines, we have hired some mercenary engineers to help us reduce Mongol forts to rubble.

This year was a significant one as we have constructed our first fleet detachment in the Baltic sea. This should increase the money we get from Trade.

Events of the year of our Lord 1261
Mongol forts in Khazar and Volga-Bulgaria are sieged with the newest mercenary equipment and troops. However, Khan Batu I decides to lift the Siege in Khazar with his mighty army.
http://www.ralphwolf.clara.net/Rev/khazar.JPG

Defense of Khazar

It was raining again this day. The downpour was so fierce, we could see Lightning far off in the distance.
Perhaps the lightning will strike the Khan in his groin and put the Mongol threat out thought Lord Nezhkov to himself.
He was joined by Prince Andrei and Prince Ysevolod.
Mongols just don't learn, do they? said Ysevolod.
You are correct my Prince answered Nezhkov. Then we shall teach them the painful lesson of defeat again he continued as an evil grin beset his face.
Infantry advance into the forest Cavalry, hide behind the forest and wait for my command to pursue yelled out our General and his commands were carried out to the word.

Mongol heavy cavalry came (6 detachments) attacked us in the forest and were promptly destroyed. Khan himself was trapped by our cavalry and spearmen.
http://www.ralphwolf.clara.net/Rev/khancaptured.JPG
The Mongols lost heart and began to withdraw. Thats when our cavalry made their move. It was a Brilliant Victory.
http://www.ralphwolf.clara.net/Rev/khazarend.JPG

The Horde was no more as their Khan was executed.

http://www.ralphwolf.clara.net/Rev/horde.JPG

However, the Horde are locust indeed for they would reappear in Armenia 16 years later.

At the end of this year only a small rebel Mongol army remained in Crimea. Sviatopolk would not rest until he fullfiled his vow to cleanse Russia of the Horde be it Khan or rebels.

Another big rebelllion was spotted in Livonia. Thank God, because we still have nothing defending that frontier.

Events of the year of our Lord 1262

It was reported that Prince Andrei got mauled by a bear while out hunting alone near the Crimean border. Unfortunately his wounds were too great and so he passed away that year. Our entire nation was in mourning.

Grand Prince Sviatopolk is bent on destroying the Horde to the last man. To this extent Khazar castle was sieged and taken.

Events of the year of our Lord 1263

This year was to be the year that the Golden Horde would no longer infest Russian lands. Lord Nezhkov (who would later become the Chancellor of all the Russias) attacked Crimea and defeated the Horde for the last time (we hope). Unfortunately, Prince Ysevolod has died during that battle.

The succession was secure, however, as Sviatopok's firstborn son Yuri should be old enough to take control when necessary.
http://www.ralphwolf.clara.net/Rev/Kings.JPG

For the remainder of his reign Sviatopolk led a peaceful life building farms, trade posts and converting the pagans in the newly annexed eastern provinces. He also ordered a construction of a great Cathedral in Moscow to honour the Victory of Russian people over the Horde.

Here are some events that happened during the last few years of Sviatopolk's reign.

1287: http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

Prince Yuri spent most of the year mourning the death of his royal father. Meanwhile, the rebel army bribed in Constantinopole defeated their former comrades killing 300 and losing 56. However, the newly enlisted Russian general, Pal Kazimierz, whose grandmother was reported recently sold into slavery to a Crimean Tatar Khan http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif warned our emissary, that without serious reinforcements our position in Constantinople was in grave danger. His spies had reported huge rebel armies rallying nearby in Bulgaria and Trebizond for a counter-attack. Yuri though was unreachable for any envoys (even the birth of his daughter went un-noticed by the Russian ruler): His grief was deep and so was the barrel of ale he was drowning it in.

1288:

The year passed uneventfully, discounting the fact that the forces of general Pal Kazimierz outnumbered ten to one and surrounded from all sides got slaughtered to the last man by a rebel army reclaiming Constantinople. Yuri still refused to call his councils or see the envoys bringing the news of defeat from the great citadel of Christianity.

1289: http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

Terrible news: a hunting party lead by Prince Yuri accidentally stumbled across the Finnish border in pursuit of a bear. The Danish garrison, mistaking the hunters for an invading army, rushed an envoy to Denmark and locked themselves up in the castle.

Prince Yuri, trying to clear the misunderstanding, approached the castle with a traditional offering of Russian bread and salt but was shot at by the cowardly Danish. Infuriated by such a welcome, the prince ordered his chief hunt-master Orekh Shubin to camp outside the castle and refuse bread and vodka to the Danish until they would come to their senses http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

The Prince and his bodyguards left for Novgorod immediately, worried that the unwanted war with the kingdom of Denmark might cause dicontent among the older generals who still counted Danes as trusted allies. However, upon his arrival in the citadel of Novgorod, Yuri learned that the Russian Baltic fleet had been attacked by a lone Danish barque. Upon the chief admiral's orders the barque was sunk and it's brainless captain with it.

The news of the outbreak of hostilities reached Prince Yaroslav in the Lithuanian border town of Shaulai while he was hosting a party for his Danish drinking buddies from the neighboring Livonia. Given the upsetting nature of the news and the fact that everyone present was drunk out of their mind, it was not a surprise, that a fierce fist-fight broke out between a gang of rowdy vikings and Russian Druzhina cavalry-men.

Not before long, Yaroslav and his body-guards found themselves pursuing the Danish deep into Livonia. Not wanting to aggravate the situation more, the Prince left for Lithuania to mourn the death of his old-time friend Lord Bjornsson, a six star Danish general who got trampled while trying to stop the brawl http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Yaroslav's councils provided him with accounts of 370 viking huligans dead and 150 captured. The remains of the Danish Livonian expedition had fled to the safety of Riga walls.

As soon as the rumours of skirmishes in Finland and Livonia reached the royal courts of Europe, the kings of Poland, Germany, and France rushed to cancel their age-old treaties with Russia. And there was no listening to Yuri's envoys trying to explain the innocent nature of the whole incident. Grieved by the treatury of his former Western allies, Yuri ordered feasting throughout the country: Free vodka was duly appreciated by peasants, increasing loyalty all across Russian Eastern steppes.

1290:

One morning, after two weeks of celebrating the first Russian naval victory, prince Yuri found himself and a few boyars sleeping in the middle of a Livonian wheat field amidst empty vodka carriages... Not wanting to insult the former allies even more, the Prince ordered a hasty retreat to his Novgorod cellars. To his royal amusement, Yuri learned that the whole Riga garrison had sallied and was blocking the passage back to Mother Russia.

Since, out of sheer foolishness, the Danes refused to move, the Boyars were forced to teach them a lesson: The Norse-men perished quickly, either killed or captured. Realizing Riga was empty and much closer than the comforts of his Novgorod palace, the Prince ordered his men to turn around and help themselves to whatever they could find in the Teutonic city. This was a good decision, indeed, for more than 2000 florins got plundered and brought to the Treasury by Yuri's bodyguards alone...

Right in the middle of the festivities to honor the rightful addition of Livonia to the Russian lands, an envoy from Finland brought the news, that the Danish garnison, realizing their previous wrong-doing, had surrendered and was awaiting Yuri's mercy. Boyars in Livonia ordered another round to memorate this success of Russian bear-hunters. In an unrelated sea skirmish, a silly Danish caravel captain was relieved of his duties in the Baltic. This again, called for two weeks of boozing in Riga brothels and taverns.

The year brought a triple victory for the Russians while peace with the Danish appeared to be even more elusive... Some of Yuri's councils suggested that sending a war party to Sweden might just do the trick of bringing the stubborn Danes back to the drinking table... But that's a story for another day.

Ouch that bites. It has been known that there was a certain instability with save games but i thought they were supposed to fix it with VI xpac.

One thing i did notice in VI is the following:
If you save during the pre-battle screen (where it shows all the troop deployments) and then you load that save..... You will get NO Production for that turn. It is a really annoying feature since you won't get that extra unit that was supposed to be built etc.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Well Kristaps i hope you manage to work around this nasty game crash. *crosses his fingers*

Revenant69

CTD......hmmm sounds suspiciously like a disease of some sort http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I have had a few CTD's myself but i save often so it was never a big issue for me.

Actually speaking about saving games I shall describe it to you my worst experience with a game and saving.

It was Unreal, thats right the first Unreal. I loved the game and got really far and it took me forever to get that far in the game. Anyway, my friend wanted to see the game engine so i started the game up. And while i was talking to him i pressed the Quick Load (F5 for the sake of argument)button...............

Now, for those of you who do not remember Unreal - it had a nice flyby intro near the castle.

...................Little did i know that i pressed Quick Save (F6)instead of Quick Load. So my only save game went poo poo. I was pissed, mad and cursed for hours http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Now what kind of game designer allows you to save during the intro fly by scene?

After that incident I never looked back at Unreal again.
Sorry for getting OT here.

p.s. sorry for the delay: replaying the battles a few years before the desktop-crash took some doing...

p.s.s. since the archivar of Yuri responsible for the report on Yuri's reign is still missing after the last night's party in memory of the great wandering tzar, I am filling in some details that Mikhail, the new tzar should know.

1. By the time Yuri took over the reign of Russian lands, the empirial power had no strategic agents: assassins now can be produced in a few places, whereas Lithuanian brothels should be able to roll out the first bringers of happiness in a couple years; bishops are available in Muscovy.

2. The previous Tzars were not too lucky using Druzhina cavalry. Yuri discovered that these fellas abusing the spirits frequently are much more stable on the ground (dismounted) than in the saddle. Yuri's success defeating Danes, Polish and Germans was largerly due to excellent performance of dismounted Druzhina cavalry men (feudal foot knights). High quality Druzhina cavalry can be trained in Moscow and Novgorod: the former should be able to add +1 valor bonus to Druzhina cavalry soon.

3. Before Yuri's reign, there was practically no Russian fleet. Mikhail, however, has inherited a well developed 'northern window' with boats being rolled off the docks in Lithuania and Denmark. Caravels should be available shortly. Unfortunately, russian craftsmen have not learned how to produce carracks yet. The Black sea and its neighboring regions have also been explored by the young Russian southern fleet bringing in fortunes unseen before to the ports in Khazar, Crimea and Kiev. Crimean docks should be able to roll out caravels in a year or two...

4. Yuri was not reluctant to take advantage of other technological advances of his time: Novgorod foundries are rolling out demi-culverins. These hellish machines turned out to be very effective subduing Polish resistance in Prussian and Polish castles.

Happy reign, Mikhail the Proud

No, I believe, there is not a real problem: I've seen these desktop-crashes before. It is a problem with the save game. Sometimes it never kicks in (like with the viking campaign earlier in August) whereaas sometimes it gets nastier. Especially, when it is not clear at which point the save game has gotten corrupted (i.e, you replay a few 'recent years', but it occurs, the corruption actually has taken place earlier)

As to the Turkish game: if my reign comes during the next three weeks - I will have to pass. I will be out of the country and pretty far away from my comp [thank God]... However, if my draw comes after October 8th - I'm game.

OK, I think I've got just a few years left, who's next in line? So I can get the sav. away as promptly as possible.

Currently, Europe is split between a Spanish/Papal axis and pretty much everybody else. I'm afraid I felt honour bound to jump in against the Spanish when it started to look like they were going to sweep all before them, but we definitely have enough cash in the treasury to ride out any blockades they can put together. It's a bit of a stalemate, but I'm hoping to change that tonight. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

OK, received and made a start over the weekend.

The situation is really interesting - Spain is particularly strong with huge stacks massed in Constantinople.

My illustrious Father was clearly the supreme diplomat though - we are allied with almost everyone bar the Spanish

I will obviously write this up properly after the event, but highlights of the first 4 years include Plague, a massive Spanish invasion of Bulgaria, reappearances by the Aragonese and (ulp ) the Golden Horde, and a stab in the back from our erstwhile allies the Hungarians

We are outnumbered and still significantly out-teched.

Anyone who wants to get in on this campaign should do so - it is going to go to the wire and there is still plenty to do.

One sour note though - I have played 1350 through twice now (and it's a big turn), but have got a CTD right at the end of the turn both times. I am keen to play this through with exactly the same orders as (frankly) Andrei makes a poor tactical decision which may come back to haunt him...

I will try again tonight, but I am keen to keep the camoaign moving - if it still doesn't work I may have to abort the final attack (which seems dishonest and would also be a shame - it is a fantastic 3 way battle) or perhaps see if someone else can play the turn out to completion. - I would prefer the latter.

Drucius, would you be up for one more battle if I need it?

Drucius
09-29-2003, 15:06
Personally, I think you should play out your turn for good or ill, mate, and cope with it the best you can. What happened? Did you attack the pope or something? I was determined to keep him quiet until I'd dealt with the Spanish, meself...

Maelstrom
09-29-2003, 16:18
Nothing quite so incompetent - a tactical rather than strategic blunder. Georgia rebelled, so I moved a force in there on the same turn figuring to take it before the Spanish could reinforce. - I should have waited one turn...

The net result was that I finished up fighting a 3 way battle with 2 forces each considerably larger than my own from a starting position that meant I couldn't sit it out and wait for them to finish with each other first.

In fact I won, but the tattered remnants that I have left in Georgia are not going to last 2 minutes against the stacks the Spanish are bringing up and I had to deplete Khazar considerably to make the attack in the first place....I may have just opened the back door...

I will try again tonight to complete this turn without a CTD.

And I have played fast and loose with than nice fat treasury you left me....

Drucius
09-30-2003, 02:09
Ah, my son, you are too eager I would have left them to duke it out and then beaten up the (presumably) weakened victor.

As for the treasury, it's there to be spent, fill your boots I couldn't take it with me, after all.:)

Maelstrom
09-30-2003, 10:07
That's what I would have done too if I had had any sense at all...

Replayed it twice last night in an attempt to get around this CTD. One draw, one outstanding win - Unfortunately 2 CTD's so neither of them will count...

I am going to have to wind back a turn or two to try and get past this bug.

Maelstrom
10-01-2003, 09:20
Status Update
-------------

Thanks to some pointers from the apothecary, I appear to have got past the CTD issue - but only by going back a couple of years, clearing all my build queues and then playing forward again. This is not doing our tech development any good at all...

I really hope that RTW is better tested and more robust than MTW has proved to be. I suppose it is a testament to the quality of the game that I am still playing despite the succession of problems and bugs I have come across over the last year or so....

Drucius
10-02-2003, 10:58
I know many people have had interminable problems with MTW, but my own experience has been pretty positive. Version 1 was slightly annoying and did suffer from CTD's every now and then, but these disappeared after the first patch, and now the only problem I have is with saving before a battle, which I have stopped doing because it inevitably leads me straight back to the desktop.

Anyway, well done Maelstrom, onward

Maelstrom
10-13-2003, 09:11
Getting there

King Andrei is 52, and in the absence of the patch, starting to feel a little unwell...

All the turns are big ones at the moment though - So I don't expect to finish until later on this week.

We've managed to kick the Spanish back as far as Rhum, have dealt or are dealing with factional (re)appearances from the English, Burgundians, Aragonese and Golden horde (twice ), but are currently being carved up by the Swiss of all factions. Somehow, despite only having an income of 220F p.a. in their one province (Franconia), they have managed to build a couple of stacks of SAP.... - I don't think they even have the technology for these

I'll make them pay for that backstab though....

On a more worrying note, I am concerned about the Germans. They appear on the alliances info overlay and have emissaries & Bishops running around the map, but I'll be damned if I can find a single province that they own (and I have strategic agents & fleets everywhere now...).

Not sure how we are going to defeat a phantom faction

Update:

My login ID appears to have been screwed up (why am I now awaiting authorisation???), hence the new one.

However,

Andrei is now 54 1/4. For his 53rd birthday his erstwhile ally the Pope gave him Total War - attacking all our fleets and bockading almost every sea.

Our income has been trashed, we have rebellions and loyalty issues across half our empire and the pope has followed up by pouring many thousands of troops across our borders.

Needless to say, these last couple of turns have been enormous with the current one having (I estimate) around 15 battles to fight out including 5 huge set-pieces.

Am currently targeting Friday night (GMT) for completion of my reign - I will try and stabilise the situation somewhat before the reaper gets me....

Who's next?...

Ascension

It was the year of our Lord 1379. In the height of the winter of 1378, in December, our great ruler Andrei II had died of disease. He left a vast empire, fought together by countless Russians under his leadership in countless wars and endless conquest. Once a flimsy alliance of Princes of different cities, Andrei II had transformed this alliance into one Empire, through intimidation, foul politics, and even assassination. But it was for the greater good. The newly forged nation, under leadership of the 'Tzar' Andrei, conquered many lands, and in the process slaughtered thousands of men, women and children.... it would come back to haunt his heir and eldest son, Yaroslav.

The Life of a Tzar

Yaroslav sat in his palace overlooking the great city of Novgorod, capital of the Tzardom. He couldn't enjoy the view however, as he was inside, in the mead hall. He sat at the head of a long table, made out of oak and beautifully carved. In front of him was a great feast, and plenty of wodka to pass around. His 'guests' were his own personal guard of Boyars. He sat there, with his crown next to him on the table, overthinking his new position and responsibility as Grand Prince of Novgorod and Muscovy and Tzar of Greater Russia, whilst in a haze of near-drunkness. Over the years as a commander he got the habit of drinking a lot before battles, and he was a notorious drinker. However, this did not seem to lose him any battles, as he was a capable commander and an expert at attacking.
Suddenly, he smashed his fist on the table hard, shaking the grails of wodka and the plates with many kinds of food. Men he cried, It is our duty, our sworn duty to Russia and God, to destroy the Papal infidels They claim themselves to be the Kingdom of God on Earth, but they are nothing but hypocrite, lazy, fat fools that sit on their lazy asses letting their men do the dirty work for them That, while we labour in name of God to free Europe from the Papal yoke, once and for all. Because the Papacy have tricked the people of Europe for so long, deluding them, blinding them and rending them unable to see what is truly good, we must impose our rule upon Europe at the tips of our swords Are you with me?, and the men cheered and shouted battle cries that echoed through the palace. And so began the rule of Tzar Yaroslav II.

The Battle over Friesland, March 1379

After raising his army, Yaroslav set sail to the last Papal stronghold in Northwestern Europe, Friesland. Destroying the armies there would seriously weaken the Papacy, and further Yaroslav's cause. Calling upon the generals in the surrounding lands to cross the border and cross swords with the Roman Catholic dogs, he landed on the northern shores, on a cold spring day in March. He was alone, because his armies in the surrounding lands were marching upon the Papists from the south. However, the fools had been too stupid to notice there was another Russian army in the province, and this would seal their doom. As the battle commenced, the arbalesters of the Russians, armed with pavises for protection against missiles as they reloaded, rained death upon the men of the Papacy. The Russian subcommander had chosen his position well, upon a commanding hill above a road. The Papal forces decided to advance to the Russian men on the hill, and when they did, the Russian halberdiers rushed down, and the clashes of the melée echoed over the battlefield. Meanwhile, Russian boyars had run out of arrows and were now busy flanking the enemy on the right flank, while Russian boyars on the other flank were holding off the Papal cavalry.
Just when it seemed this would be a long battle of attrition, boyars poured down the hill behind the backs of the Papists. These were the boyars of the royal army, and at their head was the Russian tzar. Now completely surrounded, it didn't take long to rout the Papists, but they were surrounded now, and the following massacre was great. At the end, three thousand Papal soldiers had found their death in the cold north, and a further one thousand were captured after the castle near the Northern city of Groningen had fallen. The humiliation for the Pope was great, and the resent between Russia and the Papacy grew deeper.

Battle over Croatia, June 1379

Yaroslav had ordered Lord Chortov, the Metropolitan of Moscow, to lead an attack into Croatia, the gateway to the rich Papal province of Venice. This man was a commander that was as of yet unnoticed, but in this battle he proved himself an emerging military genius.
Chortov positioned his troops wisely, in a position facing the Papal left flank. However, he was too far away to capitalise on his position. So, he waited. The Papists turned to face him, and marched up the hill on which the Russians rested. Because they had made the error of marching up a hill bristling with arbalests, they soon suffered heavy casualties at the hands of Russian arbalesters and mounted crossbowmen. When the time came, Russian halberdiers swung around to face the imminent threat of Papal heavy infantry closing on the Russian left flank, and Russian armoured spearmen marched to meet the threat of mounted sergeants on the right flank. Slav skirmishers, lightly armed and armoured, but extremely motivated, threw their armour-piercing javelinns into Papal ranks, and the result was deadly: many a Papist died impaled on a javelin. Meanwhile, the arbalesters had turned to face the threat of Papal forces on the right flank, which threatened to gain a local superiority and thus desintegrate the right flank. Due to the support fire, the armoured spearmen managed to push the enemy back, and just at that moment the Papal forces assaulting the left flank of the Russians routed, followed by the Papists attacking the right flank. The result was an all-out chase by the Russians, ending in many hundreds of Papal dogs getting captured. Seven-hundred men from the Papacy died, as opposed to a mere eighty Russians. Three hundred were captured, but these were executed later when the Pope refused to pay their ransom.
Chortov was promoted because of his victory, and his men had gained experience. Also, the Russians now stood at the gate of the heartlands of the Papal empire.

Battle over Portugal, July 1379

The same year, Yaroslav ordered his one of his most brilliant generals to take the last standing stronghold of the Pope in Iberia, so as to show the Pope who was superior. The following battle was a bloody massacre of three thousand men, by a mere nine hundred Russians. Albeit four hundred and fifteen Russians died, that was nothing to the huge deathtoll of the Papists.
However, when they marched on Lisbon itself, they were hailed by the normal folk of the province as devils, demons, and infidels. The people of Portugal threw stones, wrotten vegetables and fruit, amongst other things at them, and even with a garrisson of two thousand men it was impossible to keep them in check.

All over Europe, resent of the Catholic population against the Russians grew, mainly due to the Papal Inquisition, who cowed the population, and made them zealous and afraid to defect from the Catholic Church. Thus, a great number of rebellions were sustained, but all of them were oppressed and the ringleaders executed. Yaroslav was greatly angered at the fact that the European people were disloyal, and liked nothing more than executing all of them, but his brother managed to convince him only to execute the leaders of the rebels, for slaughtering even more of the people would only bring on greater rebellions, as he reckoned.

However, the nobility, bent on keeping its power, was always behind the Russians, and this helped Yaroslav in keeping most of his provinces in check. In Brandenburg and Swabia, the nobility defected to the Russians, and forced the population to defect with them. Thus, these two provinces became part of Greater Russia.

Thanks a lot Ironside, this campaign has been dead in the water for a long time now... and my attention has been redirected to other ones lately.

It is a strange map isn't it, especially with the papacy being so powerful.

Anyway thanks again for taking this up and keep us posted on your progress http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Oh excellent, after our High period start and long wars against the Mongols I was beginning to suspect this campaign may not finish before the end of the Late period

Excellent work

I look forward to reading the final chapter in what has been a very interesting campaign. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

All hail Grand Prince Yaroslav II http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif
http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20King%20Yaroslav%20II.jpg

He's a Natural Leader, Drinker, Famously Brave and an Expert Attacker. So he's quite aggressive.
And BTW the loyalty on the new troops that came had dropped by 8 on average. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

1379
Immediately after the burial of his father Andrei II in January 1379, Yaroslav gathered his commanders. I had a dream last night. In that I saw the banners of Russia all over Europe and our dreaded enemy, the heretic calling himself the Pope laying dead on the field. What my father and forefathers had started, I will finish it
So whats our situation? he asked Lord Milov, governor of Livonia, the Admiral of the Russian fleet and the greatest commander of Russia. Milov answered slowly. Unfortunately is the Papacy navy still strong and threatens our communications with our outlaying lands. We can not launch an offense until the situation is cleared, the amount of troops we need to maintain order is insane. It's possible that a rebellion will occur in Burgundy, we do not have enough forces to keep the population in check. And, he said quietly, almost wispering We had to abandon Sicily to reinforce the sieging forces in Naples.

WHAT, yelled Yaroslav I should execute you for this Stop it Shouted Lord Buiakov, the second in command in the Russian army. He did what he had to do, do you whant the situation to turn into a new Croatia?
Yaroslav, that at first was stunned by Buikov's attack and reminded by the situation in Croatia where a large loyalist rebellion had started (proper reinforcemnts had already been sent), got slowly back to his sences, drank his third vodka and finally said: Very well, proceed with your plans Lord Milov. This meeting is finished, proceed with your orders.

The sea battles raged throughout the seas. It was mostly a success for the Russians, but a 5 stack fleet in the Maltese channel was successful in destroying two caravels, while one carrack commanded by Pavel Stepanov escaped. The rebellion in Croatia was put down without much trouble.

Great news my lord Yaroslav shook by surprise and almost spilled out his vodka. Yes, Baldin... he answered with a cold voice. The emissary Yaroslav Baldin responded quickly. I apologize for disturbing my lord, but I'm happy to report that all the rebels on Crete has been killed.
That's better news than the rebel rising in Burgundy. I assume that we have regained the control of Crete now? said Yaroslav.
Not exactly...
WHAT Why not?
It appears that the woodsman in the castle are convinced that the ghosts of the rebels i still out there.
You got to be joking, said Yaroslav with a sudden tiredness in his voice, shaking his head. Send some reinforcements to Crete to clear this situation.
http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Odd%20rebels.jpg

Although the great event this year was the marriage between Yaroslav and Lord Milov's daughter, it was celebrated in all of Russia and was so big that it put a large dent in the Russian treasury. Luckily the Russians could afford this luxury.

1381

Made on the wedding night, did the new crown prince Sviatopolk get born on 3 Mars. It was a very joyful moment as the royal line was secured. But the Burgundian rebels used this distraction to storm the Burgundian castle and was able to take it with heavy causualities.
As with the years before sea battles raged in the seas, but it was clear that the Papal navy wouldn't last long. The sealines around the empire had mostly been secured.

1382

Lord de' Bardi, count of Friesland, now commanding the forces in Austria was uneased. He suspected that something was going to happen soon. Scout had reported large activity among the Russian forces on the other side of the border. Not even Pope Giovannis words that the heretic Russians was soon to be punished by God for their attacks on God's kingdom on earth as Giovanni called the Papacy.
He stopped his thoughts when he saw Don Gregorio Corsini and his mounted sergeants entering the camp with haste. Considering Corsini had been commanded to guard the border, he feared that this news wouldn't be exactly good ones.
Corsini entered the camp shouting The Russians are coming De' Bardi sworn some holy oaths for himself and muttered Now it begins, then he asked Corsini: How many? They outnumbers us two to one and they seem to have a better commanding general..., mylord he added after a few seconds. De' Bardi ignored the pause and said: Do not worry, our Pope will send enough reinforcements to repel these heretics, and remember that we have God on our side. Corsini's response came quickly with a touch of irony in it: Yes the Pope, our glorious leader. And how are you suggesting that he will get these reinforcements from? We have the largest forces in the area and Venice has already been sieged by the Russians. And our Father in the sky, are you certain that he support us and not the Russians? I don't see any angels around here. You speak of heresy De' Bardi was shocked by this outburst. May your soul find the true path before it's too late, he said to himself but with a laud voice.
De' Bardi turned to the troops that had crowded around them and said with high voice. If we cannot beat the Russian heretics on the field then we retreat to the castle and wait for Papal reinforcements. God will not see us die You are going to wait for those reinforcements in wain Lord De' Bardi, shouted Corsini. Your faith in the Pope and God is clouding your mind, abandon the province or those walls will be your grave. I'm leaving for Bavaria. Although some of the troops followed Corsinis example, most troops followed De' Bardi into the castle, waiting for a uncertain rescue.

Lord Milov was pleased, the last pieces of the Papal navy was destroyed, Pavel Stephanov got some farms as a bonus when he succeeded to destroy the Papal 5-ship fleet in the of Gulf of Gabes.

And far away, in Lithuania was Grand Prince Yaroslav II pleased, operation European conquest had begun.

1383

Sicily, Corsica, Sardinia, Provence and Burgundy was attacked and taken with little resistance.

Lord Milov, now freed from the naval problems decided to take the initiative on the last Papal forces on the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal.
http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Portugal.jpg

The field wasn't exactly good, a village was in the center with two forests no each side of the village. On the right side, it was two hills and the bulk of the Papal army was on the largest. In the middle it was a valley with parts of the village and the rest of the Papal forces.

After some shouting with the cannons that only caused light damage, the main offense was commenced. Lord Milov didn't want to simply push forward towards any of the two groups, and therefore leaving his flank exposed, so he made a surprising move. The entire army was moved through the forest on the left side and flanked the forces in the vally.
http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Portugal%20Deployment.jpg

The surprised Papal forces only succeeded to put up light and unorganized resistance, and the valley was soon secured. But the main Papal army on the hill remained, with most of its troops armed with bows or other ranged weapons. The offense against the hill took soon place. Armored spearmen lead the assault, absorbing most of the ranged barrage.
A unit of jinettes charged toward the general, threw their deadly javelins and behold, Lord de' Medici, commander of the Papal forces fell with a javelin pierced through his chest.
The shock among the remaining Papal forces was huge, our boyars met very little resistance when they swept through the last of de' Medici's forces. The reinforcements was routed from the field without much trouble.

http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Portugal%20combat%20stats.jpg

Portugal was now in Russian hands.

Baldin opened the doors, ran in and shouted Great news mylord Yaroslav was even closer to drop his vodka this time. Ever heard of knocking? he said annoyed. Pardon mylord but our forces have taken Tuscany, and the Papal States and is now sieging the Papal capital of Rome.
Exellent, when is the siege estimated to end?
It will last many, many years, mylord
Hmm, tell Lord Baldvin to train some siege forces immidiatly. Romes fall will be a great victory for our forces, Yaroslav said caculating.
Yes, mylord.

1385

Great news mylord This time did Yaroslav spill his vodka. After some svearing he asked And the news Baldin?
We was able to capture the Pope when we took Genua and Milan
Perfekt Is he executed yet?
No.
So he's sended here then, exellent.
Not exactly.
So were is he? Yaroslav started to get quite annoyed.
In Swabia, mylord.
When did we take Swabia?
We haven't, mylord
WHAT, did you let him lose after capturing him? Yaroslavs face started to turn red by anger.
Yes mylord, unfortunatly didn't we capture him in battle so the code of honor says that the Pacacy will be given the chance to ransom thier troops. The Papacy accepted and payed 12000 florins for it.
Baldin, how would you feel to have your head put on a stake?
Dead mylord, but I'm not sure that I'm following you here.
Nevermind, you're dismissed, said Yaroslav and filled his glas with some vodka.

1386
Tyrolia, Bavaria and Swizerland fell to the Russian forces and it now under siege.
The Russian plan was following. By isolate the Pope in Swabia, they didn't have the problem with reemerging Pope in Italy.

1387
They newly matured hier prince Chort came to age and was commanded to lead the attack on Friesland. (I accidently thought that he was the new crown prince for some years http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-oops.gif )
http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Friesland.jpg

Cannonballs fell down over the Papacian forces, causing fear and damage in the Papacian lines. A by a stroke of luck (although some calls it by the divine hand) the Papal general was smashed to pieces by a cannoball that struck into his unit. http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Friesland%20killed%20gen.jpg

Strenghten by this success, Prince Chort ordered his men forward. The boyars started to skirmish on the Papacain forces, causing heavy causualites when thier own causualities was low. When the Papacy realised the threat, they started to deploy thier arbs in the frontline. So the great battle started. The armoured spearmen didn't preform as good as hoped, but the greatness of the boyars compensated for it. The Papal line soon broked and they fled of the field. But the reinforcements ramained. Wave after wave broke against the steadfast warriors of Russia (mostly thanks to the Boyars). http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Friesland%20deployment.jpg
All the captured was taken to the sword.

(Forgot to take picture is the stastistic screen, but in the logfiles I killed/captured (k/c) 694/889 and lost 431. My boyars stood for 71% of the k/c) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-shocked2.gif

But not all was well.

Lord Zhiroslavov could barely belive his news sended to him. The Pope had abandonned Swabia and was trying to relive the Innsbruck castle. Considering the massive Russian forces around him it was a extreme decision. But what mattered was that the Pope outnumbered him close to 3.5 to 1 and the Pope was a feared commander. Retreat wasn't a option or his head would be lose. He knew that his only hope was to be victorious against almost impossible odds. For Russia, he was simply a blood drain for the Pacacy, used to ease the task of defeating the Pope later. This will not be a easy day, he mumbled and prayed to God to be merciful on his soul.
http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Tyrolia%20evil%20pope.jpg

The battle didn't go well, although many men were slayed by the heavy archer fire, our line was quickly broken by the superior number of troops and ran. Lord Zhiroslavov fled the field soon.http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Tyrolia%20my%20gen%20routing.jpg

The reinforcements in form of the men of the steppes saw a opportunity though. Pope Giovanni had separated from the rest of his army and was quickly sourounded.
The heretic Pope fought like a devil though, causing heavy losses in our poor steppe cav. http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Tyrolia%20inmortal%20pope.jpg
In the end he withdrew alone from the battlefield, exhausted as he was. And despite our attemt to kill him, it failed.

In the end, it was a hard loss to the Russians 451 killed and the Pope had a k/c of 411/284.

It's takes quite a lot of time writing this, I've noticed

I have never seen a Pope with a Six Star Command rating before.

Orekh Zakharivev was troubbled. Pope Giovanni had invaded Milan in a attemt to avoid the heavy counter-attack in Tyrolia. The fate of Lord Zhiroslavov was still fresh in his memory. He knew that he had the chance to defeat the heretic Giovannis forces, but the battle would be preatty grim. Victory and he would be celbrated a around the country, losing he would join the same fate as Lord Zhiroslavov.

http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Milan.jpg

Today we will fight battle against our dreaded enemy Pope Giovanni. I know many of you fear that we will go the same fate as Lord Zhiroslavov and his men. But fear not, we are more in number and better prepared. We shall be victorius today Those who can bring me Giovannis body after the battle shall be richly rewarded. Zakharivev was pleased with the speach. The morale among the troops had risen and they were now prepared for battle.

The summer day was warm and sunny and the birds sang peacefully. Zakharivev deployed his forces on a hill with a forest on his left flank. A dustcloud showed were the Papal forces were and it slowly came closer and closer towards the hill. Zakharivev thought he could see some knights among the troops. Good, he said quetly to himself, the Pope is there. He rode up to the culverin crews and ordered them to fire on the knights. Yes general, but we won't be able to fire them for long, he's withdrawing. Zakharivev turned around quickly, and yes Giovanni really rode away from the field. Zakharivev was shocked, this hadn't he counted with. He rode up to the troops and shouted The coward to Pope has left his troops, now our enemies will be demoralised and unable to put up any tougher fight. But in his heart he knew that the death of the Pope would improve the situation ten times more than what is was now.
http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Milan%20initial%20deployment.jpg

He was right, our men couldn't hold the line against superior troops and broke soon, espicially after that Zakharivev was separeted from his troops by a unit of Chivalric spearmen. Zakharivev succeded to skirmish away from them but when he tried to join the reinforcements, his way was hindered by a depleated unit of arqebusiers. Easy match thought Zakharivev and charged. The arqebusiers surpriced him by joining into the fight instead of retreating. This was not a problem, but they time delay was fatal. The hunting CS caught up and assulted the back. Without any support did Zakharivev rout and ended up captured.

Zakharivevs cupture wasn't good for the morale among the troops, but they faught on and retook the hill. But the preassure of assulting units took hard on our warriors morale.
http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Milan%20not%20doing%20well.jpg
All units here, exept the reinforcing arbalest, was vavering

After losing the hill a second time, did the jinette reinforcements retake it. They fought valiantly, but slowly thier number deminished.
http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Milan%20jinette%20reinforcements.jpg

Taking the was a mistake though. The flat area behind the hill was easier to hold. When our line on the hill broke for the third time, our attemt to create a second line failed.

http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Milan%20statistics.jpg

It was a Pyrrhus victory for the Pope though, out of 3000 attackers, only 900 survived.

*Knock, knock.* Come in... Baldin... Better news then last time I hope? For your sake. The Pope is still in Milan, celebrating his victory, Baldin said carefully. He still rembered what had happened when he had bringed the news of the loss of Milan. Only lord Malvin's advice had saved the captured from being executed. But thats not why I've come. I'm glad to report that the city of Rome has fallen into out hands
Fantastic Nothing more into this then what you've told me?
Not this time mylord, the assult went even better than we had estimated.
Really? About time you gave me some good news. So what happened? asked Yaroslav curiously.
By interference of God, it was raing on the day for our assult, helping our troops against the intense arrow fire. Secondly, the enemy general made a hage mistake and positioned himself behind the first wall, instead of close to the inner keep. After some battling, our forces killed the Papacy garrision and the castle garrision surrendered soon afterwards.
Exellent, a toast for our victory in Rome, Yaroslav said and drank his vodka.

1389

*Knock, knock* Come in. Ah Baldin, here take drink. Yaroslav seemed very happy. Thank you my lord, shall I tell you my news? I don't think you'll need it, Lord Milov has already sent a message that Swabia is taken and that he won over the Pope in Milan. The papal forces on the mainland is broken and only a few remnants is some castles a left. And Lord Buiakov is commending our main army into Scotland to take out our enemies, the French. Long have they survived.

http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Scotland.jpg

Lord Buiakov wasn't as happy. The French had deployed themself on an exellent defensive position. Although victory was certainly secured, Buiakov's losses could be high. And he didn't like high losses.
Only his culverins was able to fire, but they succeded well, the Frech king saw a cannonball a little bit to close.
http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Scotland%20killed%20king.jpg

Soon afterwards the main assult began. Buiakov moved his men to the right and was able to break the first wave without to much troubble. The problem was the reinforcements. Unable to find a good stratigic position, Buiakov was forced to deploy his forces very close to the edge. That meant that Buiakovs arbalesters didn't preform as good as hoped and the highlander clansmen the French hired was doing heavy damage to the exhasted spearmen before they routed from the field. The mounted sergants that showed up was able to run through the glaps in the depleated lines and attack the arbalests.
http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Scotland%20battle.jpg

But Buiakov was right, victory was never in doubt.

I'm sorry for the long delay, I haven't gotten time to write it.

I got a little fed up on playing battles were I outnumbers the enemy with atleast 2:1 and with a better general. So I auto-calced some.

1390

Yaroslav was pleased, the arch-enemy of the Papacy had last all their standing forces and they remaining forces was covering in thier castles, after victories in Ireland, Milan and Northumbria. But the Danes had started to show an increased aggressiveness, complaining on the rightful war on the Papacy and rumor said that they was planning on declaring a new Pope as soon as the old one had died. This could not be tolerated

1390

Russian Forces attacked Wessex and Lord Buiakov's mighty army attacked Mercia. The inferior Danish forces retreated to the Wessex castle and fled from Mercia.

1391

Fleeing from Buiakov's advancing army in Wales, the Danish king Erik V made a desperate attemt to flee to Wessex.
http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Wessex%20evil%20danes.jpg

Lord Ivanov were confident, soon the Danish army would be defeated and he would be celebrated all around Russia.

The field of battle wasn't good for Ivanov. A large precipice and hilly terrain pushed Ivanov close to the edge of the map, were the only flat terrain was. The battle began, arrows cluttered the ground and the field was turning read with blood. But it was Russian blood. The Danish left flank, with king Erik and his sons was slowly grinding the Russian rigt flank into nothing, despite valiant defense by the armoured spearmen. King Erik led a breakthrough through the line and in a desperate attemt to change the battle by killing king Erik and to prevent general panic, Lord Ivanov himself charged Erik and his bodyguards. It was i vain, shortly afterwards, the entire right flank broke and ran, leaving Ivanov without support. In an attemt to reach king Erik to challenge him on duel, lord Ivonov was cut down by one of king Eriks bodyguard.

On the Russian left flank, it had gone better. The furious vikings had been killed although with heavy casualities. Fresh reinforcements started also to arrive here. King Erik saw this and tried to push the forces backward before they could organize themself after the death of their general. But Erik's army was shattered and he saw no other choise than charging in himself in the great mass of soldiers.
One after one his bodyguard fell before the huge mass and soon king Erik was alone. A hailbard fell, cutting of his horse head and Erik fell, surrounded by angry spearmen. When his body was later checked, they found 43 stabwounds from spears on it.
The Danish forces was now in shock, thier king and his sons had all fallen or been captured. And now they had to face an re-organized army. Wave after wave attacked, but most of them never reached the Russian line, but had fallen due to an arbalest bolt or in some cases an arqebusier's bullet.
http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Wessex%20battle.jpg

The Russian line held and soon victory was assured.
http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Wessex%20stats.jpg

Europe was now all Russian.

Or was it?
No, on the small island of Malta, the Sicilians still thrived. They had been allies to the Russians for a long time, even throughout the last wars. So a decition was made. A union was to be formed between Russia and Sicily. The population that hadn't already converted to Ortodoxy, was to renounce thier heretic Catholic faith and to convert to Ortodoxy. To sign the union, a marrige between the newly aged Russian crownprince Sviatopolk and Princess Flora that would be declared Queen Flora of Sicily after the marriage.

Crown prince Sviatopolk
http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Crown%20prince.jpg

And his wife Flora
http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20His%20wife.jpg

The 13 january 1397 began the festivities in what was the biggest marriage in history. The celebrations continued for two months, but a dark moment happened when Lord Milov got an heart-attack and died during a speach after drinking to much. His adept Lord Gubin replaced him.

All was well then?
No, when Queen Flora was with her husband in Novogrod, her powerhungry brothers declared her as being a traitor and declared themself as the true leaders of Sicily and the oldest son declared himself king Allan I. Many nobles joined them, fearing the change that would come under Ortodox rule. Queen Flora (with had made herself quite popular in Sicily) was devastated when she heard the news. But king Yaroslav comforted her and said:
None shall take anything from my daughter-in-law drank his vodka and prepared for the liberation of Malta.

In 1399, a small part of the Russian army commanded by Lorv Gubin landed on Malta's shores after defeating the Sicilian navy the year before. They were met by celebrations from the Ortodox population that told them about the horrors the false king Allan I had done agianst them. It angered the Russians greatly. Allan heard about the invasion and came to meet them.
http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Ironside%20PBMTzar%20Malta%20small%20force%20%3b-).jpg

The battle was quick and the remnants of the Sicilan army fled to the castle.

The 3 may 1401 rode the pregnant Queen Flora and her husband Crown-prince Sviatopolk into the Malta castle with the people cheering around them.

Far, far away, in the Novogrodian castle was Yaroslav happy, his dream had came true, entire Europe was now in Russian hands. Cheers he said to Baldin and drank his vodka.

Brilliant work, Ironside I had a look at the savegame before you inherited it and realised that finishing the campaign would be an awful lot of work. Some of those battles looked rather tough - Russians seem rather low tech compared to the Catholics in the late period. You did very well, especially in presenting your reign in such a good write-up. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif
