View Full Version : Uploading pictures to the org

Monk's edit: Hey guys. This isn't in use anymore. Thanks.

Very important note: I (frogbeastegg) am no longer in charge of the story upload service. The staff member you want to talk to is Ludens (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/private.php?do=newpm&u=4277).

I have the pleasure of announcing a new feature for the org - the upload manager. This service allows patrons to upload their pictures to the org for hosting. Firstly the rules:

1. This service is for use in the Mead Hall and Throne Room only. No signatures, babe pics or other junk, only the pictures needed for PBM reports, the screenshot thread, or anything related to a current story thread. There is limited space so please do not abuse it with useless pictures.

2. Keep your files small. Again we have limited space and the smaller the files hosted the more that can fit on. As TosaInu says No need to post a 500 kb jpg when a 80 kb gif can show the same. Nothing above 2MB will be accepted and you should avoid files this big as far as possible.

3. Keep your pictures to a considerate size. Not everybody has a giant monitor capable of displaying high resolutions so keep your images small enough to fit on the screen without distorting the orgs layout - if it makes the post look wider than this one the picture is too big and should be reduced to a smaller size. Try to be considerate.

4. Run a virus scan on any zip file before submitting it. We will not be very amused if we end up infected with a virus because you didn't take a few seconds to check your file.

5. Please convert the files into JPEGs (or similar) yourself. There are instructions directly below on how to do this using free software. If you have problems converting ask for help and we will do our best. Basically there are three reasons why you don't want us to convert your files: Firstly we might crop away something you wanted to keep or alter the picture in a way you don't like. Secondly we are quite busy and we don't have the time to do everyone's TGAs for them, we will do the odd one or two as long as you ask for permission first. Thirdly the converted files are much smaller so you are more likely to be able to upload them successfully.

7. Don't put symbols or spaces in your file names. This one is very important - if you put a symbol or space in the file name you will not be able to use the uploader will refuse it. So use plain letters and numbers only, no ? * % or anything like that.

Please put your name somewhere in the filename. This is not a rule more of an insurance policy to make my (and yours) life easier. Some files get corrupted on upload and there is nothing I can do with them except delete them. Trying to find the owner of a file called 'stuff.zip' is next to impossible and it wastes my time. Trying to find the owner of 'NTWstuff.zip' is easier - I know to hassle one of the NTW mod team. Finding the owner of 'frogbeasteggstuff.zip' is easy. If I know who the file belongs to I can send them a short message telling them the file is corrupted, please resubmit. The limit on file name length is very generous so please put your name before the name of the individual pictures, for example 'frogbeasteggpics.zip' containing 'frogbeasteggVikings.jpg', 'frogbeasteggcharge.jpg' and 'frogbeasteggSamurai'jgp'. This also has the bonus of making it easier for you to find your pictures after they are hosted. Remember the org's coding doesn't get on with symbols, if your name contains one of these characters you will have to leave it out.

So the basic rule is size matters and smaller is much, much better.

How to convert your TGA into JPEG and resize it to fit the screen.
First download Paint Shop Pro from this site (http://www.jasc.com/products/paintshoppro/), you want the free evalutation version. Now open your TGA (found in the MTW/TGA folder with paint shop pro. To resize, click on image -> resize and choose percentage of original. To have the image fit into the usual post-width set both dimentions to 70%, then click OK. If your picture has a lot of unnecessary space on it you should crop it down as this will make it look better as well as make it smaller. To do this click on crop on the left hand tool bar and then drag out a box on your picture. When you are happy with the boundaries (anything outside the box will be lost) double click outside the box and the picture will be cropped. The final step you need is to save the picture in it's edited forum so click on file -> save as. Now enter a name and click on the menu next to save as type and scroll until you see JPEG, click on it to select JPEG format. Now click save and you are done

How to upload your files.
Click on the following link to be taken to the upload page and follow the instructions, they are quite straight forward but if you need help post here and it will be explained. As the page says the staff must first unzip and upload your pictures to the org so don't expect them to be available instantly. We will try to keep a rapid turnover but we have lives of our own so try to be patient.

Important: Please wait for the uploader itself to report the upload as complete. Some browsers are reporting the upload as complete when it is not. This leads to your file getting corrupted and your screenshots will be ruined.

Upload manager (http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/Uploaders/pimgupload.php)

After you have uploaded your pictures, PM the staff (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/private.php?do=newpm&u=4277) and they will move them to the public folder at the earliest possible moment.

How to post your picture when it is on the org.
Check this page (http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/) after submitting your file. When the staff have added your file to the storage space it will appear here so make sure you give it a distinctive name. If you click on your file it will take you to a page where the picture is displayed. The address of this page is the one you need to post the picture in a topic so copy it and then it your post hit the image button in the create post screen (it's right next to quote and above the box where you type your posts) and paste the address into it and then hit ok. If you have done this correctly your picture should be displayed properly but use preview post to be sure, if there is a problem the picture will appear as a box with a red cross rather than your exciting picture. If this happens check your address again to make sure it is correct. Once again if you need help post here.

This is an excellent feature IMO. I was actually gunna post about file hosting and stuff. I feel a bit bad constantly harassing kukrikahn to host my screenies. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif

Should make things easier.

Thats a nice feature and I am sure many members will find it useful

Great job guys http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

For those who were wondering about reduction ratios... Reducing a Screenshot Image to 85% of its original size will bring it down to a nice file size without distorting The Orgs Layout.

Konnichiwa,

About 500 pixels wide is great, but larger is ok with me. I'm sure that you'll sort out what works best.

This topic is intended for avatars and sig pics, but it may be of use for these pictures too http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin....5;st=25 (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=13;t=9885;st=25)

A bit filecompression should allow space for more and/or larger images.

PSP has optimizers, but you could also try this one. (http://www.spinwave.com/crunchers.html)

frogbeastegg

TosaInu has tweaked the filemanager to accept gif, png, jp(e)g, swf (flash) and bmp format files as well as zips, so you can now upload your stuff in those formats. Please remember that there is a size limit of 2MB so anything naturally larger than that must be zipped. If it comes to more than 2MB when it's zipped you will still have to contact us for help.

All of the rules (except the one that demands zipped files, of course) still apply so please make sure your file meets them.

EDITED: Er, well this is kind of embarrasing but will the owner of peas.zip please resubmit their picture. I seem to be having technical difficulties and all of the org hosted screenies have turned into a logo. Sorry I thought it was a signature clip because it looked like an advert for the org Will try to fix this so the screenie service gets back on track.

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif What's the matter? All the pictures have turned into a totalwar.org textbar.
I've seen this before in the screenshots-thread, but then it just of question of clicking refresh untill the pictures you want to see turn up (it was annoying though). I've never seen it happen to ALL the pictures.

Is it something about my computer, is the internet to crowded or something like that?

I had that problem after reinstalling my system, I managed to solve it with some help from TosaInu. The org picture hosting uses an anti-leeching system and you must have refers enabled to view the screenshots hosted on the org. If refers are disabled you see an org logo instead.

Somewhere on your PC will be an option to enable refers, it could be in your internet security settings, your firewall etc. Once it is enabled all the pictures should show every time. In my case it was Norton personal firewall 2002 causing the problem.

I hope that makes sense, if you need more help I'm sure someone more technically competent can think of something.

Ludens
12-08-2003, 21:13
It worked.

Thanks again, miss frogbeastegg. It was indeed my Norman Firwall. BTW, what exactly IS a refer?

frogbeastegg
12-08-2003, 21:30
My attempt at the technical definition: A thing (setting maybe?) that allows a site to check you are actually on the site before displaying a picture. This prevents people from stealing a picture and posting it on another site without using their own bandwidth, in essence acting like a leech. TosaInu explained it much better

My attempt at a more user friendly definition: An annoying setting that took me the best part of an hour to find

frogbeastegg

Well don't take this explanation as 100% accurate; I'm just the filing amphibian for the story space. With that disclaimer in place:

As far as I am aware there are 3 different spaces available each with a different purpose.
1. The story space. According to the description given to me along with the passwords for the filemanager this space is for screenshots needed for the two new forums. Signature pics etc were on the 'don't allow' list, hence me saying they are not allowed. If something is put through the uploader linked in the first post in this topic it ends up in the story filemanager and I transfer it over to the actual hosting space. The space is 25MB total with 15.6MB used.

2. The frog space is just a small 10MB space where I put the screenshots for my guides. The only people with access to this space are TosaInu and myself. I can give the password to assistants if I want but so far there is no need. To put anything in this space you have to log into the filemanager using the correct name/password for this space and then manually upload it. That is the only (as far as I know) way for anything to get to this space.

3. There is a third space I know very little about. All I know is that this space has a signature pic on it and no one manages it in the same way as the story space. I have no idea how to get anything onto that space. This is probably the space TosaInu was talking about for avatars and signature pics.

There could be another 100 spaces out there I don't know about. I don't know what order they were set up in, what the relative sizes are etc. To be honest this doesn't bother me - there is a limit to how much filing you want to do Two sets of log ins and passwords for essentially the same thing is fine, any more and I’d probably get them mixed up

Ave Scipio,

Just consider the server to be like your harddisk. There's a maindirectory patrons. Inside that directory are sub-directories, each having a different purpose and storing different kind of files. story is used for pictures like screenshots for story/pbm.
There's also a sub-directory pbm so people can share saved campaigns and don't have to rely on e-mail only.

Each directory 'has' an uploadtool so anyone can upload files. Each directoy also 'has' a more powerful Explorer like tool so an administrator, like frogbeastegg, can manage the space and keep it tidy. Moving, deleting, renaming and stuff like that.

There already is a space for avatars ( http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/pics/ ), but there isn't anyone yet to keep an eye on it. It won't be a days job, even if it becomes very popular, but I fear the worst if I have to look at it myself.

Volunteers are most welcome. If you like to add a picture there now, it should be called P_Scipio. for SigPics and A_Scipio. for the avatar to avoid me getting confused.
Either gif or jpg.
You can use http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/Uploaders/RCMTWFinal.php for now, but it may take a few days before the pics become available. Zip the files please.

Feel free to ask if you need more information.

Hey, changing the refers-setting of my firewall also solved this problem. Strange though, that it would only block some of the pictures.

Perhaps it should be mentioned in the screenshots thread?

Again I have got trouble with the uploading of screenshots. When I try to upload the files, I get the message: Couldn't Copy File To Server. I retried it today, because I thought that perhaps it had something to do with the internet, but the same thing happened. The problems are indeed because of a PHP setting by the host. The change was done on purpose to increase security.

There may be a fix, but it'll likely take some time to get it to work.

Ahem, I have a wee problem. My PBM pics were successfully uploaded to the ORG story space (for this I thank you deeply http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-thumbsup.gif ), however, once i linked them up - all I can see is Totalwar.Org thing.

Now, being a responsible member, I have read this thread top to bottom http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-book2.gif and found that Ludens had the same problem as I do. And I also have Norman Firwall which I believe is causing the problem.

So if anyone can tell me how to enable/disable refers in my Norman Firwall then I would appreciate it very much.

I have to make sure that the pics I have linked are in their proper places and stuff like that.

Thanks in advance,
Rev

frogbeastegg
01-15-2004, 22:04
I don't know Norman firewall but it should have some configuration settings somewhere. Try poking around the options/preferences/settings/anything else that sounds like that and look for refers. If you find an option for refers make sure it is set to 'accept' or 'on' or whatever. You have probably already done that and found nothing.

Secondly if Norman supports it you could set the org up as a unique site with special security swettings. This is what I did with Norton. In Norton it is under firewall->settings->advanced. Add www.totalwar.org as a new site and set it to accept both cookies (for your logins etc) and refers and that should fix it. Setting the main site works for the forums for me, setting the forums didn't work.

If you can't see anything even remotely obvious try looking in the help files that most prgrams have buit in these days. Probably not much use, if the 'help' is as crappy as usual.

You could try searching on google, I ended up searching with 'norton firewall refers enable' and got sucessful matches to sites with instructions for enabling refers for just the org. Try 'norman firewall refers enable' or something similar.

You should have a Norman Firewall pictogram (green square with black dots, not the N-pictogram) between the active programs in the bar at the bottom of the screen (right corner if you have windows XP). Right-click on it, go to the block refers (or disable refers) and select No.
This is very useful is you want to disable blocking of refers for only a moment.

If you don't have windows XP, you should go to the Norman Personal Firewall console in the start-menu. Go to privacy, and remove the tag in front of blocking refers (or something like that, my Norman isn't in English).

Norton? Right that I can help with.

You should have an icon for the firewall in your lower right hand cornour of your desktop on the bar thingy I forget the name of - the one with the start button. Double click it. This brings up the firewall basic information screen. Click options from the bar at the top. Select personal firewall. Now you should have a grey box, choose advanced options. Click add site. Type www.totalwar.org and click ok. Now with the org selected use the menu off to the side to set cookies and refers to permit. I alos have bowser(user agent) set to accept foir this site, dunno why. Email doesn't matter so leave that on block. Click OK and exit all the firewall settings etc adn that should do it.

Information about visited sites - Block
Animated Images - Permit
Scripts - Permit
Animation - Permit
Cookies - Permit

What version of Norton/windows do you have? I have 2002/XP, if you have a different set up then it may vary. The option should be there, just a matter of finding it. It did take me a few hours to find it on my PC.

Try using google (http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en) and doing an advanced search for 'norton firewall (your version) refers' just like that, set to search for all the words. I found some results and after checking a few pages I got step by step instructions with pictures.

Well there's no real way to figure this out on my own so here i am posting in this thread. A screenshot by the name of Slot0000.bmp was uploaded yesterday to the .org's story section. The problem is, it's not a TW shot. This breaks one of the Mead hall rules

Edit: said screen has been moved to the Arena, not that anyone cares though http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

IMPORTANT

To the owner of the Pic Ransom.jpg I have renamed it to Ransom03.jpg As there was already a screen in the filespace with that name. If you had placed your name in the filename i wouldn't have had to rename it and i could have sent you a PM to let you know instead of posting here.

I am going to repeat what froggy said (Though i can't believe i'm gonna have to):

Quote[/b] ]Please put your name somewhere in the filename This is not a rule more of an insurance policy to make my (and yours) life easier.

Again, i wouldn't have to post here if i knew who uploaded it...

EDIT: Upon inspection of the file, I have found that the renamed file Ransom03.jpg uploaded May 9 04 is the exactly the same as Ransom.jpg uploaded Jan 12 04. I'm not sure if this is some sort of error or a patron owns both said screens and is re-uploading to show somebody. It is most likely the later so, for now Ransom03.jpg Will be deleted as it is The exact same as Ransom.jpg. Whoever is the patron who uploaded them both, you can still link to Ransom.jpg.

I'm getting the feeling people ignore this thread, and it's really starting to make me mad. Today being May 10th, a pic was uploaded to the filespace which is nearly identical to Ransom.jpg, it's name is rnsmamon.jpg. The info in said pic is exactly the same as Ransom.jpg with the exception that the campaign map has been cut out. The fact that the name is different may mean that somebody is reading this but i highly doubt that. I ran a search of the current .org members, and the name Amon (the same as the end of the screen) is the name of at least two members, one who hasn't logged on since dec 30th, and one who just registered a few days ago and has yet to post.

EDIT: well there's one way to get to the bottem of this, the screen has been uploaded and the original Ransom.jpg has been deleted. There you go...i'll be looking for this pic to be used for the next few days, it seems this will be the only way i will find out who has uploaded this http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-shame.gif

suggestion:

seeing as how starting today/yesterday yahoo offers free email accounts with a quota of 100MB, i reckon the org could take advantage of this and, for instance, use some of that space for hosting screenshots/pics/etc. My feeling is that the storage-imposed limitations might be somewhat more relaxed.
Since I probably wasn't quite clear, I am referring to yahoo groups as well. I didn't personally check to see if there is a quota in there, but if there is, I am pretty sure they increased it together with the free email accounts quota.

To make a long story short, it's merely a suggestion, and I don't yet see any downsides to it (as for reliability, heck, i've had my account for some 5-6(?) years now and I don't have any complaints).

thought it might be helpful to the Org.

I just discovered a few files in the image space that don't belong there. These are Easymtu.zip (2x) and Directx-eradicator.zip.

The picture space is meant for pictures, not programs. I don't know who put them there, but they are going to be deleted if they aren't claimed. The uploaders for files can be found here (http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/Upload_Index.shtml).

The image in Map.zip is finally uploaded. My apologies for the long delay: it had somehow turned up in the wrong map. Please put your name in the filename next time as that allows us to track down the person who uploaded them if it goes wrong.

There seems to be some confusion about the uploaders as yet another file that doesn't belong here has been uploaded into the picture space. To the owner of ipg-1.0.2.zip: your file isn't missing, it is just in the wrong place. I cannot move it from here, so you have to reload it into the proper uploader.

Sorry Ludens, those files were uploaded by me while testing scripts and I forgot to remove them.

Ah, I was worried that someone had used the wrong uploader and was wondering where his files went. Are all the unaccounted files (Directx-eradicator.zip, Easymtu.zip (twice), Map.zip and ipg-1.0.2.zip) yours?

I’ve uploaded 95% of the screen shots I need for my Seleucid PBM write up. Will put what ever I have remaining on, on Monday at the latest all files start with:

BradenPBM….etc

They are all small .jpg files so should be no problems.

I do have a question though – what is the text capacity in one post? My PBM report is…erm…extensive (19 pages of A4 using Verdana set at only 9pts). Word count tells me its:

4,508 words or 25,322 characters including spaces.

So, how many posts do I need?

Not sure about the technical limitations, but I think the best way to think about it is to break posts up into sections of a book chapter. I would not make any single post longer than your battle story, for example. And about 6 screenshots per post would be an upper limit.

Basically break it up into bite size pieces.

I'm looking forward to reading it.

Nice pictures, Braden! I uploaded them all to the patron's folder. There was one picture, "BradenPBMSeleucidpic5.JPG", that was too big, but I resized it and uploaded it again. Incidentally, you need not have decreased the size that much. According to PSP your pictures were 50% of an R:TW screenshot; the official guideline is 70%.

As for your question, I am not quite sure. There used to be a limit, but it was extended a couple of times and I am not sure it is in place still on the new board. Sufice to say, FBE got twenty-eight pages of her R:TW guide in one post, so I think your story should pose no problems. If you want to be sure, just split it in two parts.

“Nice pictures” – Thanks, ahhh…the beauty of MINIMAL:UI.

“Incidentally, you need not have decreased the size that much. According to PSP your pictures were 50% of an R:TW screenshot; the official guideline is 70%” – Yeah, read that too late. Besides I’m a lazzzyy man and 50 was the first number I came up with. I’ll resize the last few to 70% and upload them at the weekend.

With a view to making it easy to read I’ll do a few posts starting today.

Edit - Done my first posts and the screens are not appearing directly on the posts – only the links (Which work).

How do I get the pictures to appear directly on the post like the other posters have??

I don't know which options you have selected in your user CP, but if you use the standard (as opposed to the basic) message editor interface there is an image button on the top row of tools. Click it and paste the image link into the text bar. Or you can manually insert image tags. If you type:

[IMG]http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/BradenPBMSeleucidpic1.JPG[/ IMG]
without the space between the / and I in the second tag, it will show up as:

http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/BradenPBMSeleucidpic1.JPG

I'll review my posts as I used the "hyperlink" button as you suggest but I think, somehow, it put instruction down wrong.

Thanks for the detail

Edit - Yeeeehhhhaaa! It works, thanks. Was using the wrong button, I needed to use the small picture of mountains not the hyperlink! D'oh!

All posts adjusted and upto date, more over the weekend to finish off.....

Because nobody save myself seems to use the uploader anymore it becomes rather pointless for me to check it twice a day. Instead, when you have uploaded your pictures, warn me through PM and I will move them to the public folder at the earliest possible moment. I think this will save everyone time.
