I am asking for a small favor. Is there a way to switch the wooden lance, like those held by kataphractoi or mongolian heavy cavalry with iron lance, like those of Late Royal Knights or Teutonic Knights? The wooden lance in the late age makes them seem TOO outmoded.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing here....but if you are only talking about the graphic go to the Dungeon and look around for unit editting threads, it would be a pretty simple graphics edit. If there are stats that you want to change, just go to into the Crusaders_Unit and find a unit with Iron lance and copy its stats to the units that you want to give the lance to. It will be much easier if you download gnome editor.

Unfortunately, I don't have a program that can open BIF files. Plus, kataphraktoi, for example, belongs to MailH generic units, and there seems to be only 3 weapons available, none of which includes iron lance.

I would like to mod it myself if i can, I read the Dungeon forum, but I still am unable to change that ugly wooden weapon into nice steely one. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif

Don't think they had steel in the middle ages http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
Anyway is steel lighter than iron http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Welcome aboard davidky5 and Texy http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

If you go to our downloads page (http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/Tools.shtml), there are several BIF readers. However, I'm not sure which one it is you should download.

Steel is most definitely lighter than iron. The questions is if you or I would notice the difference if we were asked to lug around a twenty foot pointy thing made out of either substance. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif

It would be way too heavy. And pointless too seeing as a regular lance could turn a knight in armour into a kebab easily.

perhaps its a wooden lance coated in steel to reinforce it? Hmmm... I love history and such and I never really thought about it. Research time

Hi. Friendly medieval archaeologist here.

No steel OR iron lances in the middle ages. Pure gaming mechanic thing... even the 15th-century jousting lances were notably larger than those actually used on the battlefield, and the 20-footers you're thinking about (only carried by Polish Hussars, btw... the reason that Polish cav was actually able to charge pike formations with their horse, whereas nobody else could do so).

We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread...

Actualy steel existed as early as 500 BC. It was not made in large quantities ultil the 17th century when the Besemer Process was invented. Steel is just iron with carbon aloyed into it. There were basicly two ways to make steel. First was case steel. It was made by heating iron in a bed of chacoal (carbon) and letting the carbon absorb into the outer layers (case) of the iron. Folding and welding over and over produced steels like Damasucs steel. The other type of steel is crucible steel. This is a little harder because you have to melt the steel. It is made in a ceramic pot (crucible) with iron and other metals and carbon, and then melted in a smelter at very high tempratures. It could only be made in small batches and each batch was a bit different from the next. Hope this helps, although I know it is a bit off topic.

And to add, the hussars lances weren't massive and therefore alot lighter then if first seems. Easy to break though, but if I remember correctly it was unhonorable to get out of a battle without a broken lance.

Yes, like Hungarian lances, they were often constructed with a hollow core, and broken easily: for this reason, western european knights weren't really fond of them...

not having your lance broken? Haven't heard that one, but it could clearly imitate, if nothing else, terrible point control...

Well, that BIF reader did help. I made the graphic changes that I wanted. Thanks for the help.
