I will be putting a system together so I can enjoy TW more, particularly large battles.
I am confused about Nvidia and Radeon and want DirectX 9 support.
Welcome stories from people who are getting good results.

Your vidoe card may have nothing to do with poor perfomance it could also be that you are short on RAM your CPU chips is a little slow or even your sound card causing poor gameplay for your game.

Think of it as putting a high end transmission in a small economical family car, without a better engine the transmission isn't going to make that great of an improvement

This should be in the Apothecary. You can check out this thread there on the same subject: Which Graphics Card (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=2;t=11002)

if you have money you should buy Radeon 9800 pro. Otherwise Radeon 9600 pro is your V.Card.

Well I have a radeon 9800 pro and it works pretty well. I can play Sturmovik with full details at 1 600x 1024 with antialeasing at 4.
I bought that graphic card specifically for Plane Simulators, but I know someone who gets a 9600 Pro and that is very good too.
I must add I do not have drivers problems anymore I had with Nvidia to play Medieval.
Moreover Half Life 2 team was hosted by ATI at the E3 meeting...
Radeon drivers seem now stable enough (in past times they had a bad reputation).
I must add I am only a gamer not a specialist.
