hi all

just thought id post about one of the best fights ive had in MTW. i started a campaign as the russians (in high) on hard. now i usually struggle on hard as the russkies, but i got off to an ok start. any way im manically entrenching in the line of provinces nest to kazza and volga bulgaria.

the horde arrives (about 20+ 000 men) and start their usually rampaging. they attack all my provinces a couple of times but i hold them off. my men are high valored but begining to show holes in their ranks. then a huge army invades moscow.

5 full mixed stacks come in to my:

4 units of arblasters (none at full unit strength but all high valour

2 units of halberdiers (sp) ( one at 25 men the other at 50)

1 merc unit of musket type men. (forgot their name, the better ones not the crap ones)

3 units of boyars (all nearly full)

1 unit of horse archers (45 men)

and 1 lithoanian cavalry unit. ( 32 men)

one of the boyars was my king with 9 stars and all sorts of valour/strength/health/unlikly to rout bonuses (perfect man for the job really)

so i form up on a bridge and wait for the horde.

i was a little gutted cus it was raining, thus no muskets.

it all started the usuall way. they barly got to the bridge and were moved down by bolts/arrows.

then they started to get across the bridge and were cut down easily by my halberdiers (sp)
now things started to go bad.

the halberdiers (sp)were on hold ground/hold form. but they started to cross the bridge. all well and good the horde was being massacred. but then they got to the end and wer surrounded. they refused to come back into position and thus were massacred.

they eventually came back and i had 20 left in total.

the horde was continually reinforcing mongul warriors and horse archers. they were raining down on my men and my arlbs were almost all out of ammo.

i saw the clouds and thought this was it. i mustered my boyars up and charged the horde. thinking lets go out in style.

they crossed the bridge and ......BUTCHERED the horde, led by my king, hundreds of prisoners were rackin up and i couldnt kill them fast enough. i chased hundreds from the field and then came back and awaited the next waves.

i was out of bolts cept for one group who was half full.

the enemy came at me again with the same. heavyies heavies heavies. i now had 7 halberdiers (sp) on hold ground. as the enemy came at me i was seeing the clouds again, but then almost a solid group of them fell dead. i wondered what was going on,

then i realised.....it had stopped raining.

i formed my musket guys up in a 3 row formation and they fired volly after volly at the enemy. vicotry was so close, but the horde was sitting on the other side of the river. this thier final lot of units and thier lucky surviving general.

i gathered every thing. and charged across the bridge. everything went melee and after a long desperate fight, the horde fled the field.

i was so happy i had experienced loss/surprise/happiness/bewilderment/anger all these feelings from one fight then i won it

my units were decimated but high valour and i reinforced that turn and then wiped out the horde.

this is a game beyond games.

sorry for going on and on but i had to write this. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

This is what this game is all about. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wacko.gif Huh, those epic battles, rains of arrows, slain enemies, and the taste of victory . . . simply beautiful

It sounds like you really need to investigate merging your units and retraining.

If you have 4 high valour units that aren't at full strength, merge them so you get 3 high valour units that are at full strength and send the remainder to be retrained.

The retrained unit will appear at full strength but will have lower or no valour. Don't worry about this as the blokes with valour are still in there, just their unblooded mates are draggging the whole units overall valour down.

Doing this requires a degree of micro management as you need to remember you're sending that unit back to a province that it can be retrained in. But it's worth the hassle. As you play the game you'll find you keep more high valour units and so can construct armies that don't care how much they are outnumbered by. They look at the enemy and think 'Pah, we can have this lot'.

i do merge them after but at the time it was a little frantic. also there are two bridges to defend so you have to spread your units to cover them. then when the enemy chooses one you rush everything to that one. there have been several times in the past i got caught by the other bridge.

thx for your replys thou. was a great fight, my fav moment was when it stopped raining and wave after wave of men fell to the bullets http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

any way on to the rest of the world now.

You gotta hand it to the mongols. You can kill shiploads of them and they just keep coming back for more.

How long was your battle Reconquistador? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

not exactly sure to be honest i have no clocks in my house that are easily accessable. so i just dont know but it was the kinda situation where it started with day light and ended in total darkness outside. but again im not sure

yeah they keep comin i think its one of the best scenarios to play in the game. stuff the long term just play until u kill the horde and thats a whole game in its self.

Even a king was cold (no central heating), had very limited fresh food (no refrigeration), ill a lot (very limited medicine), bored often (no TV, films, computer games, few books), etc etc

But I guess there may have been a more raw edge to life.

Wouldn't swop, though. I feel quite incredibly privileged to live in the age we do.

hmmm but then have we become to soft these days?

as for bored...well there was a lot of fighting to do in them days.....so i think youd get by....that and the occasional assination attempt would make things very on edge http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
