Weel guys, ive been loving the screenshots section, so its only right to see who has the best. Im going to be running a competition over the next month or so to find the best total war screen shots. So heres the deal.

anyone can post 3 screenshots, and only 3

there will be several categories:

Best TW Screen

a. Best Battle Screen MTW
b. Best Battle Screen STW
c. Most Scenic Screen MTW
d. Most Scenic Screen STW
e. Best Siege Screen MTW

the best TW screen will be taken from the winners of the other categories.

For each pic, you must state which of the 5 categories it is to fall into.
After a week or two of gathering screenshots, we will then close the thread, and open up respective voting threads. After a week of votes, the first group of winners will be announced, and then the top 2 places for each will go into the final category of best TW screen.

So get snapping, and post away.

Could a mod please sticky this?

Topic pinned. Nice idea Alrowan http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

To take screenshots just hit F2 and bingo one screenshot, you can turn off the displays with F5-F7 for a better picture. You can find your screenshots in the MTW/TGA folder - you will need a programe like Paintshop Pro to view and edit them. You can find more instructions in this thread (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=24;t=10398), the thread also outlines how to use the orgs picture hosting - this competition falls under the rules for what is allowed onto the hosting so feel free to use it.

Can we enter screenshots already posted in a topic?

Nice idea Alro http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif *gets busy digging up screenies*

This not part of the HOF 2003, but an independant competition ?

As I remember this should be outside the HOF 2003 since HOF is based on nomination and voting, and not competition.

I noticed some screenies with what looks to be extreme closeup, how do you do this in MTW? can someone go over the commands or keys that adjust the picture. Thanks LOS

Hi Los

I think the best is to use the command line -ian, as this frees the camera. Once using -ian I press the slash key on numpad to hit the ground level. And then simply move as close as needed to the troops. Click F2 to capture.

I just use a program called GrabClipSave.. it makes pics in JPEG, and you can determine what size the pic is saved at and the size-quality ratio (the more quality, the larger the size of the file)... I got it a looooong time ago and the site where I got it from is dead so.. yeah. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

And no, I don't think the shots I've made so far are good enough, but this is a good idea http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

this will be separate from the HoF awards. As for screens, im reffering to battle ones, so please keep it like that http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

also, please post after each pic which category it will fall into. for those who have posted, juut edit your posts.

you can use the screenshots fromt h other thread, as long as they are YOUR OWN. And there is to be no doctored ones, it takes away from the authenticity.

Some hints on nice looking closeups, pump up your res to at least 1024x780

Descriptions:
1. Scenic. Myself, red Mori, skirting the hill supporting a flanking manoeuvre on the right.
The two with me I *think* are TigerSecome and TigerAttending.

2. Battle. I actually remember some more of this fight I am the red Mori again, my general can JUST be made out in the thick of the action where the monks and NoD's are gathered.
Moving up in grey is TigerOctavian...the brown and green are TigerShadow and TigerPhantom, cannot remember which way round http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

3. Scenic. The great Volcano This was the first time either of us fought on this map, it was more of a test but I wanted a nice pic of it. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Yes, there has been a lot of that around lately. I presume people are getting the same error messages as me when they hit 'post reply' and don't know (like I do http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif ) that the message is actually posted even though the forum reports an error. I can't clean up the mess it is making even though this is 'my' forum, deleting posts is ShadesWolf's job or the patron who did it.

Bottom line: if you get an error message copy your stuff out of the message (you know highlight and then select cut or copy) and reload the topic. Your message should be there and if it isn't all you have to do is hit reply and then paste your stuff in.

EDIT: Irony of ironies I got the error message while posting this bit about the error messages http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif

ok, let's see if i got what it takes. first screen shot, a multi play battle where the byzantine are being hurt badly, which i'm sure many will appreciate. it is also my first truely successful online battle.

http://www.Totalwar.org/patrons/story/contest_one.JPG
mtw battle
the next scene is a sp battle that takes place in a snowy setting. you can see the arbs on a hill where they they pelt the enemy with a constant flow of bolts. to the right, you see my general breaking lose to chase after the routing enemy right flank. he later rallied and killed my general...go figure.*shrug*
http://www.Totalwar.org/patrons/story/contest_three.JPG
mtw battle
from the days of sengoku, the fierce battles of the clans left many a widow, as is clear from the imigawa clan's rampage over his enemy in this lovely pic of gore and death.

Ok, time for the 3 entries of mine.

1. STW Scenic: (the infamous Lightning shot, although hard to tell if you don't see how dark the sky was before http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif)

http://brutal.loben.net/DLXWEScenic2.jpg
A flash of lightning brightens the battlefield of Totomi. A sense of unease creeps into the ranks of Lord Hojo's forces, as the dishonourable Oda dogs are nowhere to be seen. At the right flank, Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu's forces are equally puzzled. Is it a trap?

2.MTW VI Scenic:

http://brutal.loben.net/DLXVIScenic.jpg
A scene of a 2v2 MP. Hungarian and French all cavalry armies race to flank the English/German armies. As they approach the flank, they notice the enemy armies mostly consist of spearmen and longbowmen. Surely there must be a traitor within our ranks that told them we would go all cav

3. MTW VI Battle:

http://brutal.loben.net/DLXVIBattle2.jpg
As can be seen, the battle didn't go too well for the horsies, yet the pride of the French knighthood presses on against all odds, prompting the English general to look for a more... secure spot. Meanwhile my wily Hungarians regroup what's left of their forces in the distance, ready to flank and give fire support for the final attack.

Ok, I didn't have that many replays/screenies to start with, so those are the best three I could find. I'll look for some more though and post them in the other thread sooner or later.

With less than a week left, maybe it would be a good idea to post an advert for this competition in the Entrance Hall, Main Hall, and Sword Dojo in order to increase participation.

Something along the lines of:

We are having a screenshot competition that ends on xx/xx/xx at 00:00. Post your screen shots of MTW, STW, or mods here http://link. The Org can host your photos as discussed in this thread here http://link.

Rules

Be sure to label your screenies by category.

Well, here is my contribution to Scenic MTW pictures.
I call it the Star-shaped Attack, taken from a replay of a MP game.

http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/story/Nigel02starshapedattack.jpg

After the initial skirmish of the cavaleries, the main armies clash. Their flanks protected by spearmen, the English swordmen fan ot like the rays of a star to attack the Italian infantery.

I don't seem to be able to put the images in my post. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
Do I need to upload them to the ORG website?

The images just need to be on some webspace, so if you have your own space you can put them there. Then all you need to do is put them in the image coding in your post for example:

Code Sample
When it isn't in the code tags (so you can see the coding) the code above becomes:

http://www.totalwar.org/strategy/frog/napthaboom.jpg

Just replace the address in the example with the correct one for your picture. If you have no webspace of your own then you can upload the pictures to the org, after they are transfered over you just need to put the coding in as demonstrated above. If you need to upload your pictures to the org you can find instructions here. (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=24;t=10398)

Before anyone asks that pic is edited heavily for my unit guide, the game doesn't actually look that good

Nice shots Aymar. I think there definitely should be a siege category, and if they make one you'd win by default because I believe you posted the only siege screenie so far. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

Sometimes dead men do tell tales.

BTW, the black dots are the infamous black rain compliments of my Voodoo3 graphics cards. For some reason, the Voodoo3 could not correctly display the translucent rain effect.

The following is not an entry in the contest as it is a manipulated screen shot. I was playing with special effects in Paint Shop Pro and I liked the result:

I can do that if you like, I'll make a poll thread for each category. I can get around to that sometime tomorrow...

edit: only problem is I have 13 scenic shots and only room for ten entries per poll... what to do? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

You mean Monday morning before 11 o'clock UK time, right? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

TK: You could split scenic into 2 heats and then put the two winners against each other in a second poll.

Konnichiwa,

Max number of options in a poll can't be changed in a control panel, but there seems to be a way to change it by editing a file. That will be tomorrow at earliest as I don't have FTP access here.

15 will do?

thanks a heap, all late entries should be in by now. I decided not to enter, seeing as i hosted the idea of the comp, i do have some nice siege pics though if there is gonna be some competition in those threads, the other option would be to scrap the seige categories, and move them to scenic/battle where appropriate - which is probably the better option thanks to the low number of seige pics

Competition closed, let the voitng begin

I shall leave this as a sticky until after the competition finishes, that way it is easier for people to look at the entries.
