Or any other number?

It seems to mess up the order.

Thanks.

It's of little use if it corrupts the vote results.
The database could have required an update too, if it would expect max ten entries. But such seems not the case, as the field to store the data is of type text and not a limited int.

Strange that it displays the entries in a different way as I typed them. Did this happen to any other polls before?

Konnichiwa,

Another thing that might be useful for polls like these: Secret Voting.

The staff (currently only I through SQL), can lift the display of results. When the voting is over the results will become visible.

Both public and secret voting can be exciting. Please let me know what kind of voting you'ld like for the Best Screenshot Award, any poll can be made either secret or public.

As long as you can cast your vote only once, secret or open voting makes no difference to me personally. Maybe we should do a poll on it. Heh.

TosaInu
12-09-2003, 12:45
Both things are possible now, I'm indifferent about what should be used: both seem to have merits. Just let me know if a secret one is wanted for a particular poll, so the toggle in the database can be switched.

Konnichiwa,

It's not up to me to decide about this: it's a competition created and run by the patrons. I only offer some support if needed. The poll will be a public one by default, but can now also be made secret during the voting if that seems fun. The decision to do so should come from the competition organisation and/or contenders. Polling about these polls like Brutal DLX suggests might be an idea http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I think it would be good to see how secret voting works in a competition type environment, we could use it as a trial before the HoF awards come arround soon

Is the poll up yet (15 Dec), I don't seem to see it anywhere.

On a different question. Would participants be allowed to vote ? I would think NO, but don't mind very much eigther way.

P.S.
Checking: I voted M (again) but dont see the result. Perhaps someone who can should check that there are now moer than one vote for M.

Is it even possible to bar certain people from the voting? I think the only way it would work is a note included with the polls asking participants to void their votes (I shall be voiding my votes) and not participate in the voting for categories they have entries in. Outside of the categories people have entires in they can vote freely. Anyway the choice is nothing to do with me - I am just a participant with the uncanny ability to pin and close the polls

Qucik thought: If everyone who has an entry in the competition were to void their vote would there be enough people left to actually vote for a set of winners? The Mead Hall isn't exactly King's Cross station in terms of business Perhaps just a request for people to not vote for their own entry (as if anyone would ) with the option for squeemish people like myself to void their votes if they want would be better?

Good point, Froggy.
I would think that participants could be trusted with not simply voting their own picture (well, we will see that if we get all entries with 1 vote each at the end of the poll http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif ). But I think your idea of putting in a void option for the 100% politically correct is probably the way to go.

If there are more than 4-5 pictures in any one category, perhaps a 2 tier voting scheme is needed. The first vote narrows the field down to the top 3-4 vote getters and then have a final vote on that much smaller field. My thinking is that a large field of entries will spread out the vote too much and we'll have a winner with only 3 votes.

Just a thought.

TosaInu

Konnichiwa,

The Entrance Hall has a fairly high turnover. It seems easier to have the voting in this forum and do more advertizing: (pinned) topics in other forums, mainpage, extra link/button next to current search/members/help button.

Brutal DLX

'Tis unlikely that this will be gotten done with before the holidays now.
I don't know about you guys, but I won't be around here at the .org, and if I'm not the only one that has real life matters, then the voting will surely suffer...

Nigel

Probably true.
I myself will be offline for most days between Christmas and New Year (and some days beyond). But no reason why we should not have the polls in January, a good start for 2004 http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Catch up, must catch up on all the stuff I have been trying to do for days

January is HOF I think, or at least the beginnings of it. It was January last year as far as I can gather. Shouldn't be a problem though, should it? Its not like people have a poll tolerance limit Why just look at the tavern for proof http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Well, does anyone know what needs to be done ?

It would be a shame for all these great pictures if the competition just died down now. If all that needs doing is to post a single post with a lot of poll numbers, then I would just do it. Or am I overlooking something ???

frogbeastegg
01-15-2004, 20:49
One topic for each category with a poll would work. Each topic with a link back to the thread containing the screenies. Voting by patron name. Topics pinned for the duration of the competition. Basically a rip off of the HOF voting scheme http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

That sound about right? If it does I suppose I can assemble the voting topics, unless someone else really want to.

I got a little more time than I anticpated, I shall get to work on the polls now.

frogbeastegg
01-16-2004, 15:14
Well that is one set of 5 polls created and pinned. I think I got everybody, I think I got the categories right, and I think I sacrificed my chicken to Jupiter correctly so everything should be ok. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I created a new category - sieges and modded games. There is only 1 siege pic and there are enough pics from assorted mods to have their own category, so I rolled them together. This also reduced the crowding in the MTW battle category.

I have added a short description to each poll entry so patrons with multiple pictures in a category can have pictures voted for individually. I hope the descriptions are equally (un?)favourable, I did try to be fair.

Voting lasts for 2 weeks exactly, ending on Friday 30th January. Then I shall be able to declutter the Hall.

If anyone is missing from a category speak up and I shall see if I can edit you in. :prays no one was missed:

Think that is everything.

Right, I think this topic has served its purpose so I am locking it to stop people from voting and bringing it back up to the top every few days. Let the dead topic lie in it's grave in peace children, don't turn it into a zombie and keep raising it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-skull.gif
